Feature suggestion: missing member notification
I wish there was a bit more in the way of visual clues/notification when there were missing storage set members. Why? I wanted to restore a computer using the Snapshot facility. I set it up, got it going, and it seemed a lot fewer files than there should be. I mucked around, and eventually found that one of the backup set members was marked as Missing (someone else had played round with my machine). I marked it as unmissing (!), and got everything back OK. At no stage was there any (prominent) feedback that it was missing in the Restore process. What I'd suggest that if someone is restoring, there should be a few alerts (or at least a couple of BLINK type messages) that it could be incomplete. Also, it would be useful if it could be indicated in the backup set list some sort of incomplete icon for a missing set, plus a text message. Here endeth the suggestion. . . -- . Also, it would be useful if it could be indicated in the backup set list some sort of incomplete icon for a missing set, plus a text message. Owen, I understand your frustration here but it seems that you're asking software developers to include notifications or "backdoors" or whatever you want to call it to cover every possible situation that a user might run in to. Plainly put, you're asking that this developer put in a "feature" that will tell you if someone's been tinkering around in your machine. Frankly, that's what security software is for. In fact, Retrospect already has a security feature for access to backup sets so that co-tinkering can be avoided. Developers cannot possibly be held accountable for multiple admins/users/tinkerers working on one computer. Maybe that other person was trying to help you and when he/she couldn't find the needed tape, marked the member missing thinking they were doing the right thing (or maybe not, I dunno). I guess what I'm saying is that responsibility for what happens on my computer lies with me. If someone else is getting into my important files then it is my responsibility to secure the sytem from prying eyes or to train that person in my methods of backup/filing/restoring/working/whatever. It is not the responsibility of a company like Dantz to let me know that someone's been mucking around with my software. Re: running Retrospect from a CD
I am using version 4.2 but I'll upgrade to 4.3 and try it again. Tim Craig Isaacs wrote: Does anyone know if there is a way to run Retrospect from a CD? ... Re: VXA rewinds before incremental backup?
Hi Bob, If you insert a VXA tape, the tape drive *must* get to the beginning of the tape in order to read the header information. Retrospect has no way of knowing what tape it's dealing with if the tape drive can't report the information stored in the header. If you are doing an incremental backup and you insert a VXA tape that has not been used since the last backup, is Retrospect smart enough to continue where it left off without rewinding the tape? Or is rewinding necessary before and after every write session? Re: running Retrospect from a CD
So we tried it with version 4.3 and it still does not work. Actually, it will work if we don't enter the serial number but then we have to enter it each time we run Retrospect. (kind of a pain) What did you do to get it running on the CD? I can't even get the app to launch. let me know, Tim Nick Scalise wrote: I do it using Retro 4.3 on a bootable CD. I back up to a local tape drive, but I do have AppleTalk on on the CD so backing up to a volume should work also. Tim David wrote: Does anyone know if there is a way to run Retrospect from a CD? What I mean by this is I want to boot the Mac from a CD, backup the hard drive to a remote volume (server) and then format the drive. when I try to launch Retrospect, it has problems running from a locked volume. I have not tried the express version but I'm willing to get that if it will work. This is becoming more important to me as SCSI goes away. I used to do this by booting from a SCSI hard drive. I'm trying to put off buying a firewire or USB drive for this purpose but it may come to that. OS9 and Retrospect 4.3
Hi all, I just installed Retrospect 4.1 + 4.3 upgrade on a Performa 6360 running OS9. Everything seems to be OK, the only problem is that when I go to Devices, I see the following line for my Quantum DLT4000 SCSI drive: ID #2Quantum DLT4000CCIE(no driver) I gather my Mac can see the drive, but Retrospect is not loading the driver for it? If anyone has had the same experience, maybe you can share the fix. Changing IP address on client
I had to change the IP Address on my Laptop a month ago, and have not backed it up since then. I can't seem to edit Retrospect's clinet info to tell it that my IP has changed, without deleting the old entry first. I tried just adding it, but Retrospect said that there was a duplicate activator code(of course, since it is the same machine). Anyone know of a way to realize that my laptop still exists?
