I took your advice and upgraded to 7.9 and the functionality that I was trying to achieve is now built in and working perfectly. I'll stick at this level until I'm sure that Erland's plugins still work in future updates. Thanks to you all of you for steering me in the right direction. nyindieguy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=62092 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113775 ___ ripping mailing list ripping@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/ripping

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Any recommendations on how to Tag, Manage - Greatest Hits, Best Of. etc (Same Artist)
For a long time, I've been juggling an issue with the Browsing function in LMS for Various Artists albums. The default behavior seems to be that if you want the songs on compilation albums to be listed under each of the artists names, you need to leave the Album Artist blank and the Compilation Tag = No. If you dont do that, the only artists who have their songs listed from compilation albums are the ones where you also have at least one album by that artist. But if you use it that way, then if you look at the Album view, it has a separate listing for each artist on the album, and of course, the album is not listed under Various Artists. So it would seem that one needs to make a choice between having the album properly listed vs. having the songs listed under the name of the artist. Just to be clear, If I have 3 songs by The Supremes, all of which are from compilation albums, I want those songs listed under The Supremes, but I also want the compilation albums to be listed under Various Artists and have each of those compilation album only listed once in the Album menu. I can't find any setting or combination of settings that achieves this. Any ideas? --Ira nyindieguy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=62092 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113775 ___ ripping mailing list ripping@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/ripping
Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Any recommendations on how to Tag, Manage - Greatest Hits, Best Of. etc (Same Artist)
I put album artist tags on everything. I put comp=1 tags on whatever I want LMS to think is a comp. but strictly speaking, that's just a preference, not necessary. A lot of bands have an album called best of, or greatest hits, etc... bc I also use other software, not just LMS, I put the band name in paranthesis after, so the album tag would read like this: Greatest Hits (INXS) This works as expected in all software, and comp tags aren't needed, (and I don't assign comp tags to single artist comp discs anyway, or to a disc that is basically a single artist disc, but with a guest artist on however many tracks) using: win10 64 + lms 8 & duet & ipads w/the logitech app, and ipeng on an ipod http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/various_artists_logic & http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/compilations BJW's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58242 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113775 ___ ripping mailing list ripping@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/ripping

As you say there is massive flexibility in LMS to suit ones individual preferences. If I am "talking" music then my definition of compilation follows the Wikipedia one quite closely and I would agree that Beatles 1 is a compilation but I have it under The Beatles not under Compilations in LMS. As with all things there are some examples of anomalies in that Wikipedia definition as there are in any definition - Pink Floyd's Endless River springs to mind. It's a bunch of outtakes, unfinished tracks and some new recordings put together to finish the tracks and make a new album. Is it a compilation or an official release. I have it indexed only under Pink Floyd either way. Then there is the age old question of ArtistSort where one can debate the pros and cons of a particular strategy forever and a day. To provide another option; I use the compilation tag for recordings that are either; - from different artists (I leave album artist blank) - from same artist (for example Beatles 1) where the recording is like a best of album (I tag album artist as Beatles). That way, the album shows up under Beatles as well as under compilations. The great thing about LMS and tagging is that you have options and can select what is best for you. Regarding compilations I prefer to stick closely to the wikipedia definition; A compilation album comprises tracks, which may be previously released or unreleased, usually from several separate recordings by either one or several performers. If by one artist, then generally the tracks were not originally intended for release together as a single work, but may be collected together as a greatest hits album or box set. If from several performers, there may be a theme, topic, time period, or genre which links the tracks, or they may have been intended for release as a single worksuch as a tribute album. When the tracks are by the same recording artist, the album may be referred to as a retrospective album or an anthology. Thanks everyone for the detailed replies. I will save this to refer back to. A lot more flexibility with tagging/sorting than I first realised. For these I would set the album artist > accordingly and ensure that the compilation tag is NOT set. > > For VA albums I do set the compilation tag OR leave all album artist > blank. The effect is the same. Similar to d6jg. I use the COMPILATION tag set to "1" for any album that has "various artists" (e.g., soundtracks, best of the decade, etc.). For any album that is either all one artist (or mostly that artistand maybe a few guests) I either use ARTIST tag only, or if each track doesn't have identical artist (guest artist?) then I fill in the ALBUM ARTIST tag with the main artist name. As noted, if all track artists are NOT the same and one doesn't use the ALBUM ARTIST tag, then LMS will treat this album as if it is a compilation (even though compilation tag is not used). I also use the ALBUM ARTIST tag a lot when the artist has different names, but I want them all to show up under one artist folder, and under one artist in my LMS browsing. So for all of these artists, I'd use "Doug Sahm" as the ALBUM ARTIST. The Sir Douglas Quintet Doug Sahm & Band Texas Tornados The Formerly Brothers etc. But I would have the ARTIST tag use the actual band name (e.g., Sir Douglas Quintet), so the album would *also* show up under that artist name. Similar for Miles Davis (album artist), but artist might be "Miles Davis Quintet" or "Miles Davis Sextet" etc. Regarding ; vs \\. In my case this produces the same outcome. In dbpoweramp (my CD ripper), if I use a ; between artist names in my FLAC rips it creates two ARTIST tag fields, one for each artist. If I'm editing the file tags in mp3tag after the fact, using "" is what tells it to create two artist fields, or more. But LMS sees all that the same (ARTIST has multiple values). Take the CD, "Two Men with the Blues" by Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis. Here's how i'd tag: ALBUM: Two Men with the Blues ALBUM ARTIST: Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis ARTIST: Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis\\Willie Nelson\\Wynton Marsalis (if using mp3tag), and this will produce 3 separate ARTIST listings in the LMS database: ARTIST: Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis ARTIST: Willie Nelson ARTIST: Wynton Marsalis So If I clicked on Wynton Marsalis in "artists" in the LMS menu, I'll see the album, "Two Men with the Blues" listed. Same with Willie Nelson, and same with another artist called "Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis". But from my folder and filing system, the actual digital files live in an artist folder called "Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis" p.s. I would NOT use the COMPILATION tag for this album. *Home:* VBA2.5 4TB -or- rPi4B-8GB/pCP7.x/4TB>LMS 8.1.x>Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio (all ethernet) *Cottage:* rPi4B-4GB/pCP7.x/4TB>LMS 8.1.x>Touch>Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (Radio WIFI) *Office:* Win10(64)>foobar2000 *The Wild: *rPi3B+/pCP4.0, hifiberry Dac+Pro, 4TB USB (LMS & Squeezelite) *Controllers:* iPhone11 & iPadAir3 (iPeng), CONTROLLER, Material Skin, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win10(64) *Files:* -Ripping-: dbpoweramp > FLAC; -Post-rip-: mp3tag, PerfectTunes, TuneFusion; -Streaming:- Spotify garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113775 ___ ripping mailing list ripping@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/ripping

Thanks. That sounds perfect. On a different note:Only just discovered the use of ";" or "\" so just tweaking a few albums with partnerships and similar. Was a little unsure about - eg Ian Gillan, Gillan, Ian Gillan Band. So have created multiple artists using ";" so I can list all under Ian Gillan if I want. Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Any recommendations on how to Tag, Manage - Greatest Hits, Best Of. etc (Same Artist)
It depends on your interpretation of "compilation" In my world that means a Various Artists album and like you my Best Of's are under the Artist in question. For these I would set the album artist accordingly and ensure that the compilation tag is NOT set. For VA albums I do set the compilation tag OR leave all album artist blank. The effect is the same. [SlimDevices: Ripping] Any recommendations on how to Tag, Manage - Greatest Hits, Best Of. etc (Same Artist)
Hi all Trying to tidy up my Music Library (Not Classical) of CD's, Vinyl Rips and Web Sourced Albums. I've tried searching and reading but there's lots of debate on Various Artists/Compilation behaviour and Bugs etc. Most of the posts go back many years. Can I ask what others do in their collections regarding - Greatest Hits/Best of by the same artist. I use Tag and rename or Mp3Tag and i'm totally confused by the use of the Compilation tag (should I use it or not).Should I call these Various Artist or Compilations.Do I leave Albumartist blank. At present I have folders for each Artist with all their albums including Greatest hits in their own folders. I have one folder for Various Artist with Albums like - 80' hits, best of motown etc. Most tracks/artists display as expected but i'm unsure how to manage these albums. Thanks in advance Red Storm's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=71160 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113775 ___ ripping mailing list ripping@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/ripping
