I dinked around with it too. I can't find anything to quibble about,
and it just feels consistent and good. I find it satisfying that
somebody finally sorted out stuff that people have been struggling with

Also, the other day I was messing about with a idea (admittedly fairly small)
where I was doing a lot of cutting and pasting, along with some deletions, both
inside segments and the segments themselves. So far no crashes, so cautiously
optimistic there too.

In svn you will now find that both the Matrix and the Notation
editors behave like the segment canvas. If you drag something outside
of the viewport, a relatively gentle auto-scroll should begin. The
further you go outside, the faster the auto-scroll. Horizontally
anyway. Vertical is fixed rate since rg doesn't do a lot vertically.

If the window is close to the right edge of the monitor, the
auto-scroll area might be moved into the viewport a little.

Also, all of the rulers (standard, tempo, controller) should exhibit
the same behavior. In some places, this was completely missing, so if
you've grumbled about a lack of auto-scroll anywhere in the UI, it
should be there now. If it isn't, it can be added very easily.

As always, please test this to death and let me know if I missed
anything.

No, to be clear, I have several matrix editors open and flip between them when
making corrections, or adding harmonies.

With stationary matrix windows I drag notes around with the mouse; pitch,
position, length, and with the velocity controller showing also drag those -
sometimes singly, sometimes groups (thanks for getting the groups sorted guys).
When I'm in the 'grove' I move about quite fast, and the existing high speed
scroll when you get even remotely near the edges, can suddenly dump you three
octaves away - or a dozen bars :(

If Ted can fix this he'll be my hero for life :)

And what exactly do you mean with auto-scolling (not the follow playback

It took some time to get used to the new behavior on the segment canvas,
but you did your homework, and your well-researched and
solidly-implemented solution performs very consistently and well. I
quite like it, and copying the behavior elsewhere strikes me as a fine idea.

While I'm writing, I may as well let people know what I've been up to
lately.

I was a MIDI and notation guy for many years, but then I bought a set of
drums. I mostly play drums and guitars now, and I mostly work with
audio. I was never a strong reader on guitar, and I didn't spend a lot
of time with drum notation either.

My drum recording setup is complicated, and managing the hardware on
Linux is a complete nightmare. After 15 years of using Linux
exclusively, I finally switched to Windows for audio and video
production. Windows is survivable if you just use it for dedicated work
like this, and don't install any crap on it.

Beyond all this, I went in with my son to buy a vintage truck. The work
we wanted to do required a welder and a cutting torch. Once I had
those, I knew it was time to set up the forge I had kept on my bucket
list for 20 years. Once I had the forge, I wanted a milling machine to
make easier work of making cross-guards for knives. Once I had a mill,
I wanted a lathe too. I also got a vinyl cutter so I could make masks
for etching lettering and ornamental designs into knife blades.

I was having problems with condensation on my equipment, so I did some
research and came up with a solution to the problem. The guy posted his
finished project with just a vague outline of how it worked. I gave
myself a crash course in Arduino, and put together the Dewbane
Condensation Management system. It uses sensors, relays, and heaters to
keep my equipment heated above the dew point, so my expensive investment
is protected from condensation damage. There has been a little bit of
interest in the hobby machinist community, and I may sell a few of these
commercially.

So that, in a nutshell, is why I don't have time to develop Rosegarden
anymore. I am very grateful to Ted Felix for picking up and carrying
the torch.

The segment canvas auto-scrolls only when you drag outside of the
editing area. The further you go outside, the faster it scrolls. The
matrix editor has the older behavior where scrolling starts inside the
editing area. It's also somewhat unpredictable as to speed.

I presume you're not looking for the little icon near the playback icons
(things like Play, Stop, Rewind) which is labeled "Scroll to Follow Playback
(Pause)"?

(I responded to you primarily because I was glad to see someone actually post
to this list--I had posted one (or two?) question(s) here maybe a month ago,
and did not get a response (and rarely, if ever see a post on this list).)

It is nice to see that this list is not totally dead.

(One of my questions had to do with having enough space for lyrics which might
use longer words--I guess I've done the best I can for now by setting the
spacing to 220% on the Notation Editor, and I am constrained to (at least for
the time being) use version 12.04 of Rosegarden as that is what is supported
on my Wheezy version of Debian.)
