I love that storyline and their characters. If I had more time, I would
probably start reading his series.

RE: [scifinoir2] Re: War of the Worlds-Has Cruise's Meltdown Affected Whether You Will Go See It

2005-06-28 Thread Tracey de Morsella \(formerly Tracey L. Minor\)
Our country is run by a moron that people say they like and admire. So, I
think Cruise has the potential to be dangerous. While I have issues with
how quickly those in political and business power are to medicate people
, it is not a black and white issue. A while back, I made a personal
choice not to use anti-depressants to cope with multiple deaths of loved
ones and most people would have. I had a doctor and psychologist guiding
me through the process. I can't say that my way was the right one. I was
an extremely painful and difficult choice. Cruise advocates for no
professional assistance as well as no drugs. Young fans who need help are
likely to follow his que and get off their meds or stop therapy. I do not
think that is the answer. I do not think these people are reactionaries.
Die hard fans, young ones in particular seem very impressionable to me.
Hopefully, he will continue with his antics and the admiration of those
types of fans will diminish enough to cause them to think before they act.

I have followed this discussion a little bit and the Tom Cruise
chemicals are bad freakout a little bit and I have to wonder a couple
of things. First, Where did Tom Cruise get his medical degree?
Second, are there really people who make medical and health
decisions on the basis of the opinion of an actor? Yep Im a giggling
both at Tom Cruise and the bevy of reactionaries who are calling him
dangerous.

For the record, I used antidepressants because I had various
seratonin issues related to other body chemistry issues. It worked
great. I got better and now I dont need them anymore. Had I not had
them, I probably would not be here today. I also had a roommate who
had a kid who needed ritalin. Without it he was dysfunctional in the
extreme. With it he could actually go to school and function with the
"normal" kids. he was miserable without it and well happy with it.
Yep, for the record Tom Cruise is a moron.

[scifinoir2] Re: War of the Worlds-Has Cruise's Meltdown Affected Whether You Will Go See It

2005-06-28 Thread Carole McDonnell
As the daughter of folks in the medical profession, I get extremely
worried when the world gives ONE answer to any problem.

So now that world has convinced us that the ONE answer to ADD is
ritalin, we feel we can rest and not look for any other cures.

Kinda like the laxatives help constipation, or the pain-killer helps
headaches, or the midol helps cramps fix-alls. It just gets me
worried, that's all. There are so many environmental, dietary,
nutritional reasons for problems and when the people of a country are
told that the ONLY way to fix something is to use this ONE remedy,
I'm sorry but I get nervous.

Do you know which company sends all those videos to schools about
ADD? Ciba-Geigy? Yep, the makers of ritalin.

Ritalin helps quite a few kids but a drug given primarily (not
solely, but primarily) to make a kid do well at school --a drug with
some kooky side effects and which statistics show most doctors don't
give their own ADD kids...a drug which fights all
competitorswell, call me cynical but I'm not gonna take it. I
don't trust actors to tell me what not to give to my kids. But at the
same time, I don't much trust the AMA either. My doctor friends don't
even trust the AMA.

Remember that the drug companies have to pay the FDA to fund tests on
their drugs. That means the FDA gets a lot of money from drug
companies. Remember that 100, 000 people a year die from bad drug
interaction. (only 10,000 for herbs and vitamins administered by
folks treating themselves) Remember that the third largest cause of
death in America is related to prescription drugs. Remember that the
government doesn't do drug tests on kids so the percentage of a drug
recommended for children is figured from adult dosages. So we can
never be sure what a drug is doing to a kid. At the risk of sounding
like Tom Cruise, I'll stop my medicine comment.

[scifinoir2] Scientists 'raise the dead' in experiment

Scientists 'raise the dead' in experiment

12:44pm 27th June 2005

Zombies rising from the dead sound like the stuff of horror films and
nightmares - but it could soon be reality.

Scientists have discovered a way to bring dead dogs back to life.

Using a so-called suspended animation technique, they emptied the dead
animals' veins of blood and filled them with ice-cold saline solution to
preserve the tissues and organs.

The animals had no heartbeat or brain activity and were classed as being
clinically dead.

The saline solution was then replaced with fresh blood and electric shocks
were used to restart the heart. The dogs appeared unharmed by their
suspension and had suffered no brain damage

Scientists at the Safar Centre in Pittsburgh hope to use the technique on
humans within a year and are in talks with hospitals about trials on
trauma patients.

They believe it could save the lives of people who have suffered massive
blood loss, such as battlefield casualties or stabbings victims.

'The results are stunning. They have these dogs with complete cardiac
standstill for three hours and they recover to normality,' said trauma
surgeon Dr Howard Champion.

Yep. I agree. And y'all know how I feel about prequels: a good idea
in theory but very difficult to implement well. Easy to mess up.

About Batman Begins: Good film. Well paced. Good dialoge. Good,
detailed plot. Very creative in spots. Great sets. The SFX were
effective and not overwhelming. Excellent music score. This film was
everything SW eps 1 thru 3 (and Enterprise on TV) tried to be, but
failed miserably.

I repeat: Batman Begins was everything SW eps 1 thru 3 (and

[scifinoir2] Philly school system mandates black history education

2005-06-28 Thread g123curious
FYI, as there are several Philly residents on this list.

IMHO, this is a good start. A lot of other ethnic/racial groups
built this country and the history programme needs to include that,
too.

I wonder if this history curriculum will include mentions of *both*
underground railroads. Everyone knows about the "northbound"
underground railroad. The "southbound" one was based largely in
Philly.

Philadelphia Mandates Black History for Graduation
By MICHAEL JANOFSKY
PHILADELPHIA, June 22 - Angry that public schools here have always
taught American history through a Eurocentric prism, parents of
black children began pleading with local school officials to offer a
course in African-American history.

That was nearly 40 years ago.

This year, their pleas were finally - and emphatically - answered.
Starting in September, students entering city high schools as ninth
graders will be required to take a course in African-American
history, making Philadelphia the first major city to require such a
course for high school graduation.

School officials here say the course carries huge benefits for all
students and offers a perspective on American history that has been
largely absent from most contemporary teaching guides.

"You cannot understand American history without understanding the
African-American experience; I don't care what anybody says," said
Paul G. Vallas, the school system's chief executive, who is
white. "It benefits African-American children who need a more
comprehensive understanding of their own culture, and it also
benefits non-African-Americans to understand the full totality of
the American experience."

Critics of the policy shift say it will further polarize the city by
focusing attention on just one race and not dealing with other
racial and ethnic groups like Mexicans, Chinese or Poles.

According to a course outline developed by district officials, the
course will focus on how Africans became Americans through the
colonial period, efforts of slaves to achieve freedom, the Civil War
and its aftermath, economic development for blacks through the last
century, the civil rights movement and the growth of modern black
nationalist movements in the United States and Africa.

Supporters say the course will place a new emphasis on historical
African-American figures like Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells and
Dr. Charles Drew, whose contributions to American life and culture
seldom get more than a brief mention, if that, in the current
textbooks that many schools use.

The Philadelphia School District includes 185,000 students, two-
thirds of whom are African-American, and only two in seven are white
or Hispanic. The School Reform Commission, a panel that sets policy
and is now composed of three whites and two blacks, voted 5 to 0 in
February to make the course mandatory in all 53 high schools after
some in recent years had offered African-American history as an
elective.

The vote garnered little notice at the time, but in recent weeks as
the school board began mailing out letters to parents informing them
of next year's curriculum, pockets of local resistance began
emerging.

The speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, John M.
Perzel, an otherwise strong supporter of the city's schools for
recent improvements in test scores, asked the commission to
reconsider making the course mandatory.

Mr. Perzel, a Republican who represents a district in northeast
Philadelphia that is largely white, said in a letter to the
commission chairman, James E. Nevels, that he was concerned that the
mandate "will divide, rather than unite" the city "and thereby erode
the positive learning environment."

Mr. Nevels, calling himself "respectful of the points" Mr. Perzel
raised, said he was certain that district officials would not
reverse their decision. "There's no question about the commitment to
African-American history by the Philadelphia School District," he
said.

An aide to Mr. Perzel said the letter was prompted, in part, by
complaints from constituents. Mr. Perzel declined a request for an
interview, but his sentiments appear to reflect discomfort among
some whites elsewhere in the city.

Standing outside a recreation center in Fishtown, a largely white
working-class neighborhood, Mike Budnick, 16, called the
requirement "a bad idea" and said he was not especially interested
in learning about black culture or heritage.

"I'm more interested in our history," he said.

A friend of Mr. Budnick, Arbi Ferko, also 16, said, "It's not our
history to learn," and pointed out, as other critics have, that the
school had not sought to create courses on the history of other
groups.

Supporters of the course are dismayed by such views, insisting that
in large measure, African-Americans, like no other ethnic group,
have been cheate

Why see Cruise's new film? Instead, I can read the tabloid stories
about the feud between Cruise and Shields. The tabloid dialogue will
probably be better than the film's dialogue.

The best comeback from an insult was a quote by Brooke Shields about
Cruise and his love interest. While inviting Cruise and Holmes to
see Shields in the hit London musicial "Chicago" Shields said, "If
he wants to see Chicago, I've left him two tickets - one adult, one
child."

ROTFLMAO!!

RE: [scifinoir2] Re: War of the Worlds-Has Cruise's Meltdown Affected Whether You Will Go See It

2005-06-28 Thread Tracey de Morsella \(formerly Tracey L. Minor\)
Supposedly, all of his marriages and his relationship with Penelope Cruz
were for show. There are news reports that Katie has 5 million dollar 5
year no sex agreement with Cruise. if that is the case, and Nicole divorced
him anytime 3 months after the actual divorce date, she would have received
50% of everything he owned. Although I imagine she is still getting paid a
large amount to keep up the lie. So Katie is probably a cheaper model.
maybe he has to rollover models every few years to keep the price down, as
the mates grow in fame, maybe the cost to maintain the sham goes up.

2005-06-28 Thread Bosco Bosco

[scifinoir2] Re: What are Good Fantasy Books for Black Youth to Read

2005-06-28 Thread Amanda
First group around under 10 secton 10-14 and other group 15-up. I'm
looking for something to get them interested in fantasy as well as
scifi. I'm also looking for some good African epics. I know of
Sundiata, Askia Muhammed, Mwindo, Gassire's Lute etc., but I found
this book one day that had others I'd never heard of, I didn't buy
the book and later went back to buy it and it was gone. For the life
of me I can't remember the name. As well as myths and folktales etc.

2005-06-28 Thread Tracey de Morsella \(formerly Tracey L. Minor\)
While I loved him in risky business The scientology does not bother me
either. I too love Travolta. however, I have never herd of Travolta
ambushing co-stars forcing them to endure an indoctrination or making his
wife get rid of friends that do not fit into the scientology idea of how one
should act, or surround his wife with scientology watchers. I do not agree
with our society's use of drugs either-- especially Ritalin. I have dealt
with severe depression after 7 back to back deaths with therapy, herbs and
Internet overload, but I do not judge those who use drugs for depression.
Post Partum depression is serious stuff, and I do not know whether herbs
would be enough to prevent say murder or child abuse by someone who might
otherwise not act in such a manner. I think Cruise is insensitive to
ridicule Shields for doing it and make fun of her resulting career stall. I
also ridicules all mental health therapy. I think he is the wrong spokesman
for those who advocate alternatives to drug therapy. i think he would lead
those who might be inclined to question the efficacy of drug therapy to
think of those who believe in following alternative protocols as nut jobs.

Call me odd but Tom Cruise has always left me cold. It's not the
scientology thing. After all John Travolta is a scientologist and I
like him a lot. The man just doesn't seem to let his soul come
through. I honestly don't know his personality.

As for his crazy behavior-- at last I'm beginning to see something
about him that interests me. Not the Oprah couch-jumping but the
three (so far) times he told off media people in the past weeks. His
anger over Matt Lauer's ritalin comment certainly surprised me. And
since I don't trust ritalin either, it made me like Tom a bit.

As for War of the Worlds, I would probably have seen it if Tom wasn't

Why see Cruise's new film? Instead, I can read the tabloid stories
about the feud between Cruise and Shields. The tabloid dialogue will
probably be better than the film's dialogue.

The best comeback from an insult was a quote by Brooke Shields about
Cruise and his love interest. While inviting Cruise and Holmes to
see Shields in the hit London musicial "Chicago" Shields said, "If
he wants to see Chicago, I've left him two tickets - one adult, one
child."

ROTFLMAO!!

Hi Friends!

Yahoo is deleting groups that have even one member
that does not have their age in the Yahoo Profile. The
reason for this is they are in trouble for Sex Chat
Groups that had underage members in these groups. So
now Yahoo as of Midnight 6/23/05 will delete the
entire group for having any members that do not have
their age in the Yahoo Profile. There is no recovery
for the Group, it will no longer exist.
Please if you love this group, update your Yahoo
Profile to show your age, any age will do, as long as
you are over 18! Very Important!!!

To update your age in your yahoo profile,

You must log in,
then go to my account,
Then click on Edit/Create Profiles
Then click on edit next to your yahoo id
then fill in your age.

Hope this helps.

I do not know how much it is true but I suspect it is
as I know there are list hoppers reporting groups who
share adult stuff who are not in their adult area.

I hate to have to do this but I do not want to loose
my groups.

Please add your age to your profile. If you do now I
will be forced to drop you.

This msg is being passed around to all groups.

[scifinoir2] Tor Books & Sci Fi Channel team Up

2005-06-28 Thread Tracey de Morsella \(formerly Tracey L. Minor\)
Monday, June 27, 2005
TOR BOOKS AND SCI FI CHANNEL TEAM UP TO BRING THE BEST SCIENCE FICTION &
FANTASY TITLES TO FANS WITH THE NEW SCI FI ESSENTIAL BOOKS PROGRAM

Tor Books, the largest publisher of science fiction and fantasy in the
world, has teamed up with SCI FI Channel, where imagination, science fiction
and fantasy live on television, to bring readers and fans the finest new
voices in the field. Books from Tor have won every major award in the
science fiction and fantasy fields, and for the last seventeen years in a
row, Tor has been named Best Publisher in the Locus Poll, the largest
consumer poll in science fiction.

SCI FI reaches out to a broad range of fans through the SCI FI Channel with
its critically acclaimed and award winning original dramas, reality
programs, movies, and miniseries, currently in 85 million U.S. homes; SCI FI
Magazine; and through an online presence, including SCIFI.COM; the online
publication 'Science Fiction Weekly;' and the online news service SCI FI
Wire. SCIFI.COM is the official site of the SCI FI Channel and covers the
broad spectrum of science fiction, from daily news and reviews, to original
stories by today's top authors. SCIFI.COM is a "People's Choice" Webby Award
winner and a Flash Forward Award winner. Stories published on SCIFI.COM have
also earned two Nebula Awards and a World Fantasy Award.

Each month, one carefully selected Tor title will receive the SCI FI
Essential stamp of approval, which will appear on the spine and cover of the
book. Tor readers, the SCI FI audience, and new fans will benefit from an
array of special features promoting the new books. These features may
include live author chats on SCIFI.COM, and sample chapters and sneak peeks
of upcoming books in the program on the site www.scifimonthlypick.com.
Possible promotional plans to support the SCI FI Essential program may also
include promotion on SCI FI's handheld AvantGo channel, highlights in the
SCI FI Magazine books section and on-air coverage of select titles.

"We are very excited about our new partnership with Tor books and the
creation of the SCI FI Essentials program," said Adam Stotsky, SCI FI
Channel's Senior Vice President of Marketing. "This is a terrific
opportunity to extend the SCI FI brand deeper into the world of publishing."

"Tor and SCI FI represent the best the genre has to offer in the worlds of
publishing and television," added Craig Engler, General Manager of SCIFI.COM
and SCI FI Magazine. "You can bet these titles are going to be exceptional
reads from visionary authors."

The SCI FI Essential books program will launch this July with the
publication of Cory Doctorow's 'SOMEONE COMES TO TOWN, SOMEONE LEAVES TOWN'
(A Tor Hardcover & SCI FI Essential; July 2005; $24.95), a novel of
wrenching oddity, heartfelt technological vision, and human pity set on the
streets of Toronto today. Doctorow, SF's tech-wonderboy, has established
himself as one of the leading voices of next-generation science fiction:
inventive, optimistic, and comfortable with the sheer strangeness of
tomorrow. His blogger fame has attracted the attention of national and
international media while his first novel, 'Down and Out in the Magic
Kingdom,' was nominated for a Nebula Award.

For a list of upcoming titles in the SCI FI Essential Book's program, please
see the attached sheet.

Continuing in August, SCI FI Essential Book picks include:

--Karl Schroeder's 'LADY OF MAZES' (A Tor Hardcover & SCI FI Essential;
August 2005; $24.95) is the second novel selected as a SCI FI Essential
selection. His novels 'Ventus' and 'Permanence' have established Karl
Schroeder as one of the new stars of hard SF. Now he extends his reach
again, into Larry Niven territory, and back to the same distant future in
which 'Ventus' was set, to tell the story of Teven Coronal, a huge
multiplicity of human civilizations inhabiting a ringworld. Far isolated
from the rest of spacefaring humanity, Teven suffers a mysterious invasion,
one that will destroy its fragile ecologies and unique human diversity.

--'THE ROAD TO DUNE' (A Tor Hardcover & SCI FI Essential; September 2005;
$25.95) by Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson is the
eagerly awaited next installment set in the Dune universe. Millions of
'Dune' fans can now thrill to an original 60,000 word short novel by Frank
Herbert, Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, 'Spice Planet,' based on a
detailed outline and extensive notes and excerpts left by Frank Herbert.
Readers will also be treated to unpublished chapters and scenes from Dune
and Dune Messiah; excerpts from Frank Herbert's correspondence during his
years-long struggle to get his innovative work published; and Frank
Herbert's piece "They Stopped the Moving Sands," the original inspiration
for 'Dune.' 'The Road to Dune' is a treasure trove of fiction, articles, and
essays that every reader of 'Dune' will want to add to their collection.

--In October, the fast-paced, suspenseful space adventure 'NIGH
