[scifinoir2] Movie Review: The Rise of Cobra 100% SPOILER FREE

2009-08-08 Thread votomguy
Hey guys,
As you know, Rise of Cobra was released yesterday here in the US. I just
got in from seeing it today. All I have to say is WOW. The movie was very well
done. For the most part, it stayed true to the comic book series. It did have
it's campy moments, but they were few and far between while remaining enjoyable
at the same time. There were some twists on a few action movie cliches. One
bright spot, you didn't have to wait for the action. G.I. Joe shows up pretty
early in the movie and brings tonnes of action with them. While I didn't and
still don't like the international Special Forces thing, I have to say that it
really works. Best of all, for fans of G.I.Joe there were plenty of easter eggs
throughout the movie. They really don't contribute to the plot, but your heart
skips a beat everytime you see one. It's really kid friendly without being
overtly so. There's almost no profanity, although the characters do say sugar
honey iced tea a few times but that's about it. ALL of the characters were
executed very well. There weren't any that felt like an after thought or filler
characters. All in all it was a really good movie. Definitely see it if you
can. I've been waiting for a GIJoe live action movie since I was 12. (I'm 31
now) Out of what I'd really want to see in a live action GIJoe flick I'd say
that I got about 85% of what I really wanted. Please if you've seen the movie
don't talk about it in this thread. I just wanted to endorse the movie for all
of those who had doubts about it. I hope this helps.

2009-08-06 Thread votomguy
Well it wasn't a novel, but a short story written in 1989. David Drake's At Any
Price. It takes place in the Hammer's Slammers Universe on a predominiately
African World where Islamic fundamentalists have taken over and are killing
black Islamic followers who don't convert to becoming Arab Muslims. In lieu
of the Darfar situation, it definitely hit you like a punch in the gut, but in
a good way as it was thought provoking.

[scifinoir2] Re: Bill Cosby Does it Again... Profound!

2009-07-15 Thread votomguy
While I agree with the spirit of what was said, I think that there's this
misconception that Blacks can't or won't speak English. It's called DIALECT.
The simple fact is that there are people from England who can't speak good
English. We tend to focus on too many of the wrong things when it comes to
fixing what's wrong with our communities. We don't spend enough time trying to
fix why black men drop their seed and roll when the woman gets pregnant. And
where's the support for these 2, 12, 18 yr olds to fill in the gap. Instead
it's easier to look the other way and say someone needs to take care of their
responsiblity. It's comparable to the problem of US infrastructure falling
apart. We've known about the problem for years, but we'll wait until the
problem costs too much in resources to fix or worse we wait until a bridge
collapses. At least the single mom is working at Walmart, there was a time when
she would be on welfare. Lack of fathers is the primary cause of most of this,
but then noone wants to take time out to teach men without fathers what it
means to be a father. Its easier to just give some speech and tell them about
fatherhood. Noone wants to get their hands dirty. Unfortunately, that includes
Dr Cosby.

  Buzz up!

Would you pay $17,500 for this?

Think $60 video games are too expensive? You won't hear any argument from us,
but you might from JJ Hendricks, a collector who just paid a clinically
insane $17,500 for an obscure NES game from 1990.

The game in question is an ultra-rare, gold-colored version of Nintendo World
Championships, a cartridge specially produced for use in a Nintendo-sponsored
gaming contest. According to Wikipedia only 26 were created, and Hendricks
calls it the Holy Grail of video game collectors.

The game itself has a time limit of just 6 minutes and 21 seconds and
consists of three short segments from other NES games: Super Mario Bros.,
Tetris, and Rad Racer. Players are scored according to their performance in
each game, and their scores are totaled once the time limit expires. Doesn't
sound too riveting to us, but then somehow we doubt Hendricks is in it for
 the gameplay.

And while $17,500 might seem a bit much for a collection of ones and zeroes,
Hendricks actually got a bargain: the game was originally listed on eBay for
 a cool $25,000.

People may lie, but the evidence rarely does.

Court clears way for DVR service

-- The Supreme Court cleared the way for cable TV companies to offer their
customers a new service that would permit subscribers to copy and store
 programs for later viewing.

The justices on Monday turned down an appeal from TV networks and Hollywood
studios that contended these unlicensed, extra viewings violate their
copyrights. The court's decision to steer clear of this controversy could be
an important victory for the cable TV industry and others anxious to serve
the growing market for video on demand.

Cablevision Systems Corp. announced in 2006 that it planned to offer its
subscribers the opportunity to select programs that would be stored on its
computers. Viewers could have a recording of favorite programs without having
their own digital video recorder, the firm said.

But broadcasters and producers mounted a legal attack against Cablevision and
its remote storage digital video recorder. Their lawyers feared that cable
firms and other transmitters could put themselves in position to profit from
the extra viewings of their copyrighted programs. By contrast, most
video-on-demand services pay a fee to the copyright owners.

A federal judge briefly blocked Cablevision from moving ahead, but last year
the appeals court rejected the broadcasters' copyright claims.

True. I love the hard science/ military scifi books so those were always the
books that I looked for. I got tired of not being able to find hard science/
military scifi books writen by blacks or that have blacks as the main
character (real characters not cheeseballs). I took to studying the Black
presence in WWII and I picked up a couple of books. Alot of males in general
(hey let's face it white guys don't read as much as everybody thinks). I
would love to see another book like Dark Matter come out. It went along way
towards pointing me to Black scifi writers. I always took solace in my
favorite comic writers (Dwayne McDuffie and Christopher Priest). Not only do
they write comics, but they also write comics I can read.

I hope you're right, but I'm not seeing it. Hey Andromeda was pretty crappy

[scifinoir2] Our own piece of the war: The black presence in American Conflicts.

2009-06-27 Thread votomguy
I believe Alex Haley's grandfather served with them during WWI their sister
division was the 93rd. What was sad was that even though the 93rd had more
decorations than the 92nd because it was placed under French command during WWI
in WWII it was relegated to support duties. The 92nd was the only Black
DIVISION to see combat in WWII. They're my favorite division, but most of the
books on them portray them as incompetent or cowards. Several members of the
92nd were awarded the Medal of Honor during the 1990s. There was a site that
had a list of all of the Black Units.

I have Brothers in Arms. :) I'm a little sick of the Tuskgee Airmen tho. Too
many of our folk only know them. I'm surprised you forgot the 92nd infantry
Division. I have their unit patch as well as the unit patch of the 555th.
They were the first Smoke Jumpers. Also the 555th was folded into the
Screaming Eagles during the Vietnam War. I've met several of those guys. You
should see their faces light up when you ask them about being a paratrooper.
I always get pissed when I see D-Day landings with all white troops.
**shudder** And I know about the 9th and 10th. Especially the 10th as they
fought alongside the infamous Roughriders, but pretty much had to take
Roosevelt under their wing as they were the only unit in the Spanish
American War that had combat experience. Sorry got a little carried away
there, but when you look at the fact that blacks have been fighting for this
country before it was a country (cough, cough 7 Years War cough). ok I'll
 try to behave now

She wasn't what got me into scifi, but she did inspire me to start writing
scifi. I remember my mom bringing home Adulthood Rites for me and being so
excited that there were actually black people that wrote scifi. Adulthood Rites
was the only book that she wrote. (what can I say I cut my scifi teeth on
Battletech Novels) She did inspire me to believe that black people could not
only write scifi, but get it published as well. While her style of scifi may
not be my cup of tea, that doesn't stop me from including her in the greats. I
can't stand Assimov (I think he's a little overrated) but he's up there.
At least, Octavia Butler never got too full of herself. (cough cough Heinlein
cough)

Before the hiphop/street novel craze, my mom told me about an article (this was
in the 90s) that said that Publishers refuse to publish books because black men
don't read enough. To which I replied, If they never publish the books then
how will we ever find anything to read. My mom simply said that maybe
publishers don't want black men to read.

 pre-judge and reject
without looking. So I keep it to myself...except here, of course. I think
 a lot of women are
cutting off a vast expanse of great reading by pre-judging SF.

I know a lot a black male fans of Butler. I just seems in my experience most
of her fans I've met were black females. But then again that might be
because black females read a lot more than we brothers.

I know plenty young black science fiction fans that credit Octavia Butler as

the beacon that led them to science fiction. I'm an old school science
fiction fan, raised on Assimov, Delany, Herbert and Ellision. I like
Butler's work, but I consider it more social science fiction. She deals more

with relationships and issues rather than the technical aspect of science
fiction, which we all know gets more attention. I think that's the reason
her prose seems to have special appeal to black female science fiction fans.

 I enjoyed everything I've read by her but I can't say I'm a fan. She was a
greater writer than I'll probably ever be and got her respect among the
sci/fi elite if not the mainstream.

She's highly regarded but not given the same respect as the legendary hard

some ways she was more highly regarded outside the genre.

As a gamer and an anime fan, I often find myself in forums or chat groups where

They are often surprised that I'm not what they expected. Of course, I'm not

LOS ANGELES – Harmless comic characters or racist robots? The buzz over
  the
summer blockbuster Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen only grew
  Wednesday
as some said two jive-talking Chevy characters were racial caricatures.

Skids and Mudflap, twin robots disguised as compact hatchbacks, constantly
brawl and bicker in rap-inspired street slang. They're forced to
  acknowledge
that they can't read. One has a gold tooth.

As good guys, they fight alongside the Autobots and are intended to
  provide
comic relief. But their traits raise the specter of stereotypes most
  notably
seen when Jar Jar Binks, the clumsy, broken-English speaking alien from
Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, was criticized as a
  caricature.

One fan called the Transformers twins Jar Jar Bots in a blog post
  online.

Todd Herrold, who watched the movie in New York City, called the
  characters
  outrageous.

It's one thing when robot cars are racial stereotypes, he said, but
  the
movie also had a bucktoothed black guy who is briefly in one scene who's
  also a stereotype.

They're like the fools, said 18-year-old Nicholas Govede, also of New
  York
City. The comic relief in a degrading way.

Not all fans were offended. Twin brothers Jason and William Garcia, 18,
  who
saw the movie in Miami, said they related to the characters — not their
  illiteracy, but their bickering.

They were hilarious, Jason said. Every movie has their standout
character, and I think they were the ones for this movie.

In Atlanta, Rico Lawson said people were reading too much into the
characters. It was actually funny, said Lawson, 25, who saw the movie
  with
  his girlfriend in Atlanta.

That was the aim, director Michael Bay said in an interview.

It's done in fun, he said. I don't know if it's stereotypes — they are
robots, by the way. These are the voice actors. This is kind of the
direction they were taking the characters and we went with it.

True but those images are all controlled by white men who are making
fun at themselves from all the movies that you named. Our community
continues to allow others to control our images, language, and to
profit from that with out question. From Bob Johnson to Michael Bay.
If we find it unacceptable and we should not support them financially
they will get the message. So again all an opinion and I haven't seen

  Mike,

And as you can guess, there is already uproar over the mere mention of
racism or at the least racial insensitivity and stereotyping. The game
usually works like this: black people (or other people who have faced
oppression) point out they find something degrading in a film, tv show,
  etc.
The maker of the film balks, asserting with righteous indignation that
  it's
absolutely nonsense. With an air of white privilege he/she will assert
  they
have no bias, and then turn the tables on those who are pointing out the
  perceived racial slight.

Most of America, ever eager to dismiss black or other grievances, will
usually chime in. Those complaining about racial insensitivity will be
  told
to get over it. They'll be told it's all in their heads and that *they*
are the racist ones being preoccupied with race. A few famous black
apologists will be rolled out to say the black community should be worried
about kids with low hanging pants (the scourge of the afrotocracy! ) or
  the
like instead of a mere movie. Some will even come forth and say, sure
  it's
a stereotype-- but it's also true, so that makes it alright! Oh and the
Bill Cosby acolytes will naturally blame the rappers--who it seems
  invented
a time machine, went back two centuries, and created all known black
stereotypes- -forcing unwilling white masses to adopt them.

So the powerful media mogul/company will be cast as the victim, and the
usually oppressed grouping and the few vocal advocates will then be cast
  as
the villains--trying to ruin everyone's fun. It's the old switcheroo
  --and
  its quite old.

working on incorporating more of an RPG into minis games. Things Radio chatter

World Ebon certainly sounds interesting. A friend and I started working on a
Stargate themed game called Plague World. Two Afrocentric Worlds the Jameriqai
his society escapes me at the moment (I have it written down but don't have
it in front of me at the moment, but they're something like a hybrid the Zulus
and Samurai) gate to a world that's been quarrantined and there teams can't get
out. Of course there are zombies on the Plague World. (hence the quarrantine)

While I haven't stopped playing video games all together, I have almost
exclusively converted to mini games and boardgames. I still love my old school
xbox (won't get 360 until it drops to 150) and Dreamcast.

[scifinoir2] Re: Ironman: Why They Say Terrance Howard was Fired

2008-11-04 Thread votomguy
While I don't question Cheadle's talent to pull it off, the simple
fact is that Howard LOOKED like Rhodes. I'm a longtime Iron Man fan
and an even bigger fan of War Machine (I'm probably one of the few
who liked the alien armor). Howard is a solid actor. He's definitely
light years above Ioan Gruffudd. If anyone needed to be replaced over
talent issues, it's him. I have a sinking feeling Howards head got
too big which is what brought all this on. Howard even acts like
Rhodes. That said. Cheadle definitely has the stuff to pull of the
mannerisms of Rhodes, but the real question is can he pull of the
look. For me, Terrence Howard nailed it. Cheadle is a little dark to
be Rhodey. Like I said. I'm a LONG time fan of Rhodes and I've yet to
see a dark skinned Rhodey. He's always been medium to light skinned.
Of course, Marvel did make Fury black so who knows it just might
work. As long as the actual War Machine armor makes an appearance I
think I can get over it. (Hell even if it doesn't I'll probably be
able to get over it)

When a summer blockbuster grosses more than $300 million,
putting
  together a
sequel is typically as simple as throwing buckets of money at
your
  stars and
signing a few pieces of paper. That hasn't been the case with
   Iron Man 2. It took
  months for Marvel
  Studios
to lock in director Jon Favreau
for the sequel. And
  reports that Don

l Cheadle will replace Terrence Howard as Col. Jim Rhodes - a

Hollywood insiders believe the exit stems from Terrence Howard

I saw a couple episodes of Chuck... you're not missing much. The best
Scifi/ geek show on the networks this season is the big bang theroy.
It's smart and funny. TV the past few seasons has really been dumbed
down. It's like hey let's flood the market with really dumb shows.

something out of Ghostbusters. It reminds me of when they had John

then a show like Chuck is given a really low grade. Now I don't
watch Chuck, but critics love it, and its fan base may be smaller

We Rate Returning SF TV Series
 http://www.scifi.com/sfw/news/sfw_news_20081103.html
Yikes! And you think the economy is bad. Imagine being a network
executive these days. Much like the vanishing honeybees, television
viewers seems to have evaporated, and shows across the spectrum are
struggling. In fact, the networks are bleeding as they thrash about
trying to figure out how to bring viewers back to their favorite
shows.

In this second of two stories, we take a look at how returning SFF
series are doing this fall, grading them from best to worst.

Ghost Hunters (SCI FI) Premiered with 2.7 million viewers. Last
week, 3.2 million viewers. The future's so bright, these ghost
hunters will have to wear shades. Last week our favorite ghost-
hunting plumbers reached a series high, which is great news leading
into their big live Halloween investigation special. And beyond
spawning a successful sequel in Ghost Hunters International, SCI FI
just announced it has ordered a pilot for Ghost Hunters: College
Edition, in which seasoned investigators lead a group of college
students in the hunt for ghosts. Can you say franchise? Or, heck,
let's just have the Ghost Hunting Channel. Grade: A

This story continues below the image.

The Ghost Hunters: Jason Hawes (left) and Grant Wilson. (Chris
Kontoes for SCI FI )

Ghost Whisperer (CBS) Premiered with 9.31 million viewers. Last
week, 9.95 million viewers. While the series hasn't been able to
crack 10 million viewers this year, it's come close enough that it is
the highest-rated series on Friday nights. And this is one of the few
shows that has actually increased viewers since last year on the
networks. Grade: B+

Supernatural (The CW) Premiered with 3.96 million viewers. Last
week, 3.25 million viewers. Supernatural has also done well this
season, increasing in total viewers from last season. This male-
oriented show also has seen a dramatic increase among women 18-49,
which is very good. And the show did it all in the toughest timeslot
on television. Grade: B

Smallville (The CW) Premiered with 4.38 million viewers. Last week,
4.22 million viewers. Down a bit from last season, Smallville is
still looking like a champ, compared with The CW's other low-rated
programming. It may not be as shiny as it once was, but what show
would be as it delves into its eighth season? Ratings should be good
enough for another year--if The CW doesn't collapse completely. It's
unlikely the network will find another show that can be competitive
on Thursday nights with viewers as loyal as those for Smallville.
Grade: B-

This story continues below the image.

Tom Welling as Clark Kent in Smallville. (Michael Courtney for The
CW)

Heroes (NBC) Premiered with 9.89 million viewers. Last week, 8.46
million viewers. How the mighty have fallen. While Heroes premiered
last year with 16.97 million viewers, the series has taken a
significant hit. One bright spot is that the show does very well in
DVR viewings later in the week. The bad news is that most of those
people don't watch commercials. It's doubtful Heroes is in danger of
cancellation at this point, but the show's hit status has vanished.
Grade: C (NBC is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.)

Chuck (NBC) Premiered with 6.48 million viewers. Last week, 6.7
million viewers. You've got to love a show about a sweet and adorable
nerd who ends up accidentally becoming a spy, and NBC loved it enough
in its second season to give it a full-season pickup before it even
premiered. Unfortunately, viewers have not been flocking to the
series, which is down significantly from last year, and if NBC didn't
have other problems, Chuck would be in big trouble. Grade: C-

to be honest i kinda liked the ewoks, but i couldn't stand the
gungans (not just jarjar but all of 'em) the puppet scenes in the
star wars movies just adds to its silliness.
lets see there's that whole scene on hut's ship in return of the jedi
where lucas unsuccessfully tried to create a lounge scene... BUT WITH
ALIENS, YEAH! i won't even go into the pod race, or the gungan's
battle with the droids, or that stupid thing that kenobi was riding
in revenge of the sith.
i think that the mandelorians are the coolest thing in the universe,
but we'll never see them because they think that jedis and sith are
silly.
scifi films were rerepairably ruined by star wars (this is all the
more ironic when you consider that star wars is a space opera and not
scifi). it's one of those movies that's cool as a kid, but when you
watch them as an adult they kind of lose their appeal. even star trek
holds up, sure it's a little cheesy but it's not unbelieveable.
what's even more laughable is the lucas has the balls to poke fun at
a series that PREDATES star wars by a few decades. sure it's a little

then that's what makes it so silly. lucas doesn't focus on one or
even two and use the rest as back drop. he wants you to get
the full experience of the star wars universe.

a time-waster series from Eric Flint that started with teh
book 1632. It deals with the small West Virginia town of
Grantviell, which is literally cut-and-pasted from our time to
Germany in 1632. Smack dab in the middle of the Thirty Years war, the
residents have to survive amidst attacks and intrigues. They have the
benefits of superiour technology and learning, but they're only a
town of 3,000, beset by countries like Spain and France--under the
grip of the infamous Cardinal Richlieu, no less--that come to view
the up timers as a threat to be eliminated. They remind me of all
those quickly churned out scifi books I read as a kid dealing with
alien civilizations, humans working as bounty hunters on other
planets, etc. The historical research is exhaustive. I've learned
things about European history I frankly didn't know, such as the fact
that Sweden was once a powerful nation with a feared
military, or that the Dutch had the known world's
best Navy at the time. Ideas of how things like modern machine
guns, electricity, cars, prop planes, etc., would affect Europe at
that time are interesting. For example, the history books in the
local high school library become sources of great power, as Richlieu
and others steal them in order to read about--and in some cases,
prevent--the details of their own futures. Thus, kings and generals
are demoted, promoted, or executed according to whether the history
books reveal that these men would be traitors or heroes in their own
future. Doing this has already altered history; but then, it's been
established that Grantville's moving back in time actually created a
divergence in the timeline, creating a new universe. The concept is
cool, the books themselves (I'm currently reading the second, 1633)
just fair. But between work and yard work and stuff, the quick and
easy reading's been entertaining.

I also have a huge backlog of comics to catch up on. Just finished
Marvel's Civil War, now getting into the followup The Initiative
titles. Still have all of DCs Infinite Crisis and 52 books to
read too...

Sales soar for new Tolkien novel
By HILLEL ITALIE, AP National WriterTue May 1, 4:15 PM ET
The world still has a taste for tales about Middle-earth.
Two weeks after the publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Children
of Hurin, an unfinished novel edited by the late author's son,
Christopher, more than 900,000 copies are in print worldwide, nearly
double the original total, according to the U.S. publisher, Houghton
Mifflin.
The new book, a prequel to Tolkien's mega-selling epic The Lord of
the Rings, was started by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1918, but eventually
abandoned. The author died in 1973, and his son spent the next 30
years working on the manuscript. Excerpts from The Children of
Hurin, which includes the elves and dwarves of Tolkien's other
works, had been published over the years, but there was never a
single narrative until this spring.
The Children of Hurin, which came out April 17, has topped
numerous best-seller lists and Houghton Mifflin has increased its
printing from 250,000 to 550,000. In Britain, copies in print have
been raised from 250,000 to 360,000.
Reviews have been favorable. Elizabeth Hand wrote in The Washington
Post that Hurin was grand, epic storytelling and a reminder, if one
was needed, of Tolkien's genius in creating an imaginary world that
both reflects and deepens a sense of our own mythic past. The
Associated Press' Bruce DeSilva praised the book as a coherent,
vivid and readable narrative.
Film rights for have yet to be optioned, with the Tolkien estate
reportedly waiting to see the public's response to the book. The
Lord of the Rings was adapted into an Academy Award-winning trio of
blockbusters, directed by Peter Jackson.

my fave b scifi movies would definitely have to be whole live action
giant robot series. robot jox, robot wars, and crash burn. all of
which i own on vhs. robot jox had the best graphics. even if you can
tell that they were using models there's something about acutally
building something to scale. man i miss the old days when they actually
had to build stuff.
i also like a really obscure movie call space marines. it's been a
while since i saw it. i doubt it'll ever end up on scifi (it just
doesn't have the crappy factor that their looking for) i wish i could
find it. it actually had a half way decent plot. something about trying
to stop a dictator from getting a superweapon. oddly enough the movie
was made in 1989 i think so go figure.

[scifinoir2] Gaming Convention in Iraq

2007-04-21 Thread votomguy
When President Bush ordered troops to Iraq, he probably never
imagined that he would be ultimately be responsible for what very
well could be the very first DD convention/game day ever held in a
war zone.

Ziggurat Con, being held June 9 from 1200 to 2100 hours at Camp
Adder/Tallil Airbase, is open to all allied military personnel and
civilian contractors in Iraq.

KBR and MWR (the army's Morale Welfare Recreation Department) have
graciously allowed service members to use part of the Community
Activity Center to hold the Game Day.

The Ping Pong room will be set up for RPGs (Role-Playing Games, not
to be confused with the rocket propelled grenades which share the
same acronym), and the DVD Movie room will be playing Anime Movies
all day in support of the event.

The largest problem with running a Con in Iraq, of course, is that
there are no local stores or game publishers, and few game books on
the post. Even dice are in short supply, with many soldiers breaking
the unwritten taboo held by many gamers and sharing dice.

Thankfully, many game publishers have also lent their support, and
have agreed to supply game products to help the Con along.

Aethereal FORGE, Sovereign Press, Final Redoubt Press, Goodman Games,
Paizo Publishing and Steve Jackson Games are among those that have
thrown in their support for the convention.

SPC Amberson indicated that the soldiers could definitely use more.

This convention is currently in drastic need of prizes and giveaways
for the troops, he said. Everything donated will go directly to the
troops, or to MWR to use as loaner books for the soldiers.

For more information, contact SPC David Amberson at the following
address: david.amberson (at) iraq.centcom.mil

Donations can also be sent to SPC Amberson directly at the following

They're planning to run the following games (and will be happy to get
additional games):
Babylon 5 RPG, Cyberpunk 2020, DD, DD RPGA, GURPS, Historic
Miniatures Battles, Magic Tournament, MechWarrior Miniatures, Rifts,
Shadowrun, Starship Troopers, White Wolf System-Vampire, White Wolf
System-Werewolf, XCrawl

Got any game books crowding your shelves that you never use? Here's a
great cause to donate them to.

Spread the word.

We would love anything we can get.

We do have a White Wolf game here, but not much in the line of books,
mostly the older editions.

We will have a small LARP game that we are trying to get permission
to have happen at the Ziggurat for which the con is named (A LARP at
a historical site that has been around since Biblical times - WOW).

Gamer related material would be absolutely awesome!!

It takes 2 weeks or less when shipping Priority, so you still have

to watch. and then for whatever reason. richard dean anderson decides
to take less of a role in the story. and we're left with ben browder.
unlike joe flanigan which was able to take some of oneal's
charactisitcs and create a completely unique character with sheppard
(say where's my power bar). i think the downfall of the sg1 series
is that it relied too much on the oneal character to carry the show.
once he was gone the show pretty much died with him. of course
screwing with the gould metaplot didn't help any either. don't get me
wrong the ori are growing on me, but they're too mystical. the gould
made for better villians, altho the wraith are a close second. the
only problem i have with atlantis is the replacement of lt ford with
ronan. to me they took the easy way out. it was a quick fix of the
lack of character development of rainbow sun francks character. it's
kind of like ensign kim in star trek: voyager. but i'm starting to
ramble. the point is that fridays should have space shows. voyager,
enterprise, space: above and beyond (speaking of which i find it kind
of interesting that both s:aab and bsg started off on fridays got a
huge fan base and then were moved to sunday.), firefly. i know i
can't be the only one that enjoys wasting... i mean spending, a
perfectly good friday nite watching some good ole fashioned space
opera. hope i didn't rant too much. --jason

don't worry you didn't miss munch. i stopped at about four books
after hangfire (the one with the gladiators, don't worry i didn't get
it either). it was nice to see a big fight with the skinks. they do a
good job of keeping you in the dark about skink technology. it isn't
until the second book that they reveal some of the science in the
book. not to ruin the story, but the skinks even pull off a
hyperspacial jump in the planet's atmosphere. now that was cool. i
think this was the first scifi series that i saw that done in.
unfortunately the storyline kinda isn't the same with the whole
metaplot. i've migrated to starfist: force recon. some hardcore fans
don't like it but i think it's neat to finally see how a special
forces unit would work in the future.

[scifinoir2] Re: Sponsors Abandon Imus

2007-04-11 Thread votomguy
While it'll probably be hard for Imus to get work again, a very
important issue within our community has to be answered. Why is
it ok for us to call our women hos, but if someone outside our race
does it we're suddenly up in arms. The saddest thing to me about the
whole Imus thing is the la attitude that blacks are taking towards
our own who refer to women as hos. This whole thing that it's ok for
me to talk about my momma, but you can't talk about my momma. Imus
should be held accountable, but the double standard in our community
has to go. We can't say zero tolerance and then turn around and have
special exceptions.

It's also sad to say, but how much attention do we really pay to NCAA
womens basketball. This one team has received more attention then
any other team in Women's basketball history. Everyone talks about
their story, but where was all of this coverage before the Imus
debacle. That is the saddest thing of all in all of this. Would we
have paid any real attention to these women and what they
accomplished, or would we have glossed over the story simply saying
wow that's nice. If anything, we really need to reexamine not only
how we treat women, but also their accomplishments.

NEW YORK †Bruce Gordon, former head of the NAACP and a director
of CBS
Corp., said Wednesday the broadcasting company needs a “zero
tolerance
policy” on racism and hopes talk-show host Don Imus is fired for
his
demeaning remarks about the mostly black Rutgers women’s
basketball team.

“He’s crossed the line, he’s violated our community,”
Gordon said in a
telephone interview with the Associated Press. “He needs to face
the
 consequence of that violation.”

Gordon, a longtime telecommunications executive, stepped down in
March
after 19 months as head of the National Association for the
Advancement
of Colored People, one of the foremost U.S. civil rights
organizations.

He said he had spoken with CBS chief executive Leslie Moonves and
hoped
the company, after reviewing the situation, would “make the smart
decision” by firing Imus rather than letting him return to the
air at
the end of a two-week suspension that was announced Tuesday.

“We should have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to what I
see as
irresponsible, racist behavior,” Gordon said. “The Imus
comments go
beyond humor. Maybe he thought it was funny, but that’s not what
occurred. There has to be a consequence for that behavior.”

Gordon said that as a matter of principle, firing Imus should be an
easy
decision to make, though he respects the right of CBS leadership to
 consider all factors.

“When I look at it from my position as a director, where my
responsibility is to represent the best interest of the
shareholders,
it’s more complex,” Gordon said. “But at the end of the day,
the image
of CBS is at risk. ... the ad revenue of CBS could be at risk.”

“What I expect is for management to take the next two weeks to do
their
homework,” he said. “I hope that the result of their due
diligence is to
 terminate Don Imus.”

Imus triggered the uproar on his April 4 show, when he referred to
the
Rutgers players as “nappy-headed hos.” His comments have been
widely
denounced by civil rights and women’s groups, and two sponsors,
Staples
Inc. and Procter Gamble Co., have pulled their advertising from
the
 radio show.

PG spokesman Terry Loftus said the company pulled ads from the
show as
of last Friday. Another sponsor, Bigelow Tea, said in a statement
posted
on its Web site that the remarks have “put our future sponsorship
in
 jeopardy.”

Calls for the radio host’s dismissal have been growing, including
from
groups such as the National Organization for Women and the National
 Association of Black Journalists.

The 10 members of the Rutgers team spoke publicly for the first
time
Tuesday about the on-air comments, made the day after the team lost
the
 NCAA championship game to Tennessee.

Some of them wiped away tears as their coach, C. Vivian Stringer,
criticized Imus for “racist and sexist remarks that are
deplorable,
despicable, abominable and unconscionable.” The women, eight of
whom are
black, called his comments insensitive and hurtful.

i feel you on the heavy gear thing. the best thing i can tell you is
to get gears from both sides. and indoctrinate someone. or you could
start you're own heavy gear league. that's an idea i'm toying with.
i'm planning on trying to run a heavy gear demo at the church picnic.
have you seen the new blitz minis. i don't know if you own any but
they are definitely worth the price. you get 5 gears and the
equivalent of a weapons blister. my only regret is that i didn't get
a chance to get any of the 3rd edition squad sets. which i really
don't like. i got the paxton general purpose squad set to help
inspire someone into modelling.

as for 40k, am i the only one that is a little creeped out by some of
the outfits of that the inquistion wears especially if you've read
any warhammer monthlys. some of there stuff looks almost like the
clan. i tried to chalk them just being british until i got laserburn
and i read that africans formed their own league (the red
demptionists) didn't want anything to do with the imperium of man.
still i don't like the lack of brown faces reflected in their books,
which is a stark contrast to heavy gear.

every now and again i toy with the idea of doing my own game (i
suppose every gamer goes through that.) of course i would probably
have to get into resin casting. (woohoo hard core modelling at its
finest)

Well I'm glad to have a friend that reads' both and kinda tips me
off to
those which i should pay interrest in (he's the reason why I'm
looking at the
Honor Harriton series. And since I'm also a gamer I'm slowly been
working on a
Hammers Slammers mecha campaign idea (but that's geekdom-but one
that also
likes to have a real life).

you know there's a hammer's slammers miniatures game. old crowe makes
the blowers, and ground zero (of full thrust, star grunt fame) makes
the infantry. and i forget the company that makes the rules. who'd
thunk such a great game would be developed in all its parts. also i
took the concept of the combat car and am in the process of a
conversion to heavy gear for the cef/ port arthur.
