Picard was 26 - 28, and that was one of the youngest in Starfleet history.
Of course, that Sister--Triala Scott--was stated as being the youngest captain

I don't get that either, Keith. In the Navy, doctors/surgeons are usually older
when they become officers, because they're coming through OCS after they've

an officer of corresponding grade.

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: Uhuru

2007-08-27 Thread KeithBJohnson
Spock mind-melded with Nomad (which might be considered a bit silly itself) and
mentioned the other, named Tamu. Tamu was, to quote Spock, an alien probe
of great power. Its purpose was to collect and sterilize soil samples on other
planets. Nomad's directive was to seek out new life. When Nomad and Tamu
merged, their directives merged into one to seek out perfect life, and
sterilize all that was imperfect. I never understood how the badly damaged,
20th Century Nomad could overpower the programming of the (we assume) perfectly
functional, technologically superiour Tamu to cause such a glitch. I'm assuming
Nomad was mad and that gave it the power to change Tamu's programming.

As for silly plot points, yeah, Uhura somehow being trained is one, and
Trelane's powers were another. Although later sources now suggest that Trelane
was actually a child from the Q continuum, which would explain his powers.
Another of the silliest--perhaps the silliest--plots in classic Trek was
Spock's Brain, where Spock's brain is hijacked to run an alien city
underground. Later McCoy reinstalls it, with Spock literally talking him
through the final steps from the table where his own brain is being installed!
Stupid concept, and even sillier was when McCoy rigged up the remote control
device to move Spock's brainless body. Somehow Kirk could use two or three
buttons to make zombie Spock walk toward a lady, grab her wrist, and press the
specific button needed to unbuckle the pain-giving devices she'd clamped on the
landing party. I read that a Trek producer greenlighted Spock's Brain because
he was pissed at Roddenberry and crew, and wanted to show how stupid some of
the pl
ots had been.

Yes, yes I remember now!...can't believe that I missed the KiSwahili

to StarFleet level in knowledge is as ridicules as Trelane moving an Earth size
planet to block the Enterprise travels

In the Changeling, Nomad is the metre-tall robotic probe that nearly destroys
the Enterprise, only stopping when it hears Kirk's name. Turns out Nomad was an
AI probe sent from Earth in the late 1990's that merged with an alien probe
after being damaged, and got a new directive: to seek out only perfect
lifeforms and destroy all that was imperfect. It spares the crew only because
it's damaged memory banks confused James Kirk with its creator, Jackson Roy
Kirk. There's a scene where Uhura is singing, and Nomad tracks her down and
asks her to explain the purpose of music. When she struggled to do so, Nomad
wiped her mind clean in an attempt to find the answer. Scotty gets killed
charging Nomad to save her but Nomad easily fixes the Unit Scott. When Kirk
orders it to repair Uhura, it says it can't because her mind has been wiped.
So--in an incredibly hard-to-believe plot device--McCoy and Chapel undertake to
retrain her, claiming they'd have her back to college level in a week! T
his, despite the fact that Uhura's pronuoncing the word blue as blu-ee!. At
any rate, in frustration over pronouncing something, Uhura says it in Swahili.
Of course, how the hell she'd even *know* Swahili if her mind had been wiped
clean is about as crazy a device as the fact they can retrain her to Starfleet
level in a couple of weeks!

This is JJ Abrams. Has he written a female character that didn't have
issues? She couldn't be both brilliant (she once single-handedly rewired the
entire communications system of the Enterprise from the Bridge) and
attractive. She has to have a shady past.

I got a good chuckle out of that Young Hikaru Sulu has to be a bit of a

Basically, the biggest geek on the Federation flagship. Wildcat. This movie
 should be interesting.

Uhura is in the movie. Here's the casting sheet that was leaked earlier this
 month:

JAMES KIRK] 23-29 Handsome, cocky self assured and earnest. Great physical
 condition. 6 ft or less

[LEONARD (BONES) MCCOY] -28-32 Medic on the Enterprise. Smart, clever and a
bit danger-loving. Dark hair, blue eyes.

[UHURA] 25ish -African American. Brilliant, beautiful, heroic and FUN!,
Uhura is almost tom-boyish - as if she grew up in a house full of brothers.

[SULU] 25-32 -Asian American male (preferably Japanese). Helmsman on the
Enterprise. Extremely fit, capable and dedicated. A bit of a wildcat.

 [MONTGOMERY(SCOTTY) SCOTT] -28-32 a brilliant ship’s engineer. Must be
 able
to do a flawless Scottish accent!

You are correct. The episode was Spectre of the Gun. Kirk insisted on
carrying out a First Contact with a race of xenophobic telepaths who warned him
not to approach. During their first message to the ship to go 'way, everyone on
the bridge heard the message in his native tongue, including Uhura with
Swahili.
In two more eps, Uhura spoke Swahili. In The Man Trap (the salt vampire)
she spoke Swahili with a crewman (who was actually the creature in disguise),
and in The Changeling, when the computer Nomad drained her brain, she spoke
Swahili in frustration while being retrained.

My question is when they say Uhura is almost tom-boyish - as if she grew up in
a house full of brothers. Do they mean brothers as in siblings or brothers
as in black men?

If memory serves me right, Uhura insinuated that she spoke KiSwahili (the
episode were an alien spoke to the crew and they said the alien spoke their
individual lanquage fluently Chkov in Russian, Spock in Vulcan, etc.,
etc.,...

I don't get that either, Keith. In the Navy, doctors/surgeons are usually older
when they become officers, because they're coming through OCS after they've
completed their medical studies, which usually makes them 3-5 years older than
an officer of corresponding grade.

little things like that irritate me. Sometimes the desire to only have younger
people in movies bothers me too. But I'm confused. they said McCoy is a
medic, not a doctor? What does that mean? Is he still in training? Will Kirk
be a captain in this movie? If so, the lower age range of 23 is too young,
though of course I guess they can get a younger actor and simply say he's late
20s or whatever. how old was Kirk when he became captain? Picard was 26 - 28,
and that was one of the youngest in Starfleet history.
Of course, that Sister--Triala Scott--was stated as being the youngest captain

I have not met her personally, so maybe they were giving her DARK makeup and

three shades lighter. I only notice because she's really the only Black face

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: Uhuru

2007-08-23 Thread Daryle
So ideally, we¹re talking about having Sidney Poitier and Angela Basset as
Admirals...Cassandra Freeman as Uhura...I take it Pam Grier is the original
voice of the computer...who¹s doing the score, Isaac Hayes or Quincy Jones?

I¹m trying to remain optimistic about 11, but I read recently that they¹ve
cast Chekov. This would make 2 movies where they ignore TOS completely, and
act like Chekov has been down since Spock became first officer. ³Wrath of
Khan² was embarrassing because Khan claims to remember Pavel, when dude
wasn¹t even on board at the time Kirk sent him to Seti Alpha 5. It looks
like Trek 11 is being told from the perspective of a Spock flashback, which
is interesting, but Spock was on Enterprise before Kirk -- before a LOT of
the cats we know to be crewmembers, even. And he was not Pike¹s Number One.
He wasn¹t even KIRK¹s original Number One. This movie could turn out to be
the biggest mess since -- ³Lost² season 4.

why must Uhura be tomboyish? Is this another tough Black woman thing that

And since when is Bones McCoy the same age as Kirk?

Must be able
to do a flawless Scottish accent!

I've never thought of Uhura as tom-boyish... if Freema Agyeman can do an
american accent, she's got my vote.
