CSUltrasonic Nebulizer and CS

Hi Group,

I could use some help and information.

snip...

Hiya JohnW,

Your condition might require something more than an ultrasonic
nebulizer or humidifier, but I can say that after almost a year of an
hour or more of daily use of CS in my ultrasonic humidifier, it
certainly hasn't harmed me one iota.

Mine is the Sunbeam #697, which you can see a little of, here:
http://www.sunbeamhealth.com/productdetail.asp?id=28

I have modified the mist port on my unit and have placed some flexible
PVC tubing over the port. This yard length of tubing allows me to
place the exiting mist right next to my mouth or nose without me having
to be right on top of the machine.

When I first started using this device, I only inhaled via my mouth
and found that my throat was a little sensitive to either the mist or
the mist temperature, so much so that if I took too deep a breath, the
resulting tickle was so strong, it would make me cough. I switched to
inhaling the mist only via my nose and all such sensitivity went away.
I keep facial tissues handy to pat away the resulting condensation on
my nose and lips.

I don't have any lung problems, but data from this list convinced me
that the quickest way to get silver ions into my bloodstream, from my
homemade 20PPM (calculated) CS, other than IV, was via nebulizing. I
now keep a machine at my computer and one at my bedside, for use while
watching TV.

The only 'measurable' benefit, other than the total absence of colds
and flu this last year (nothing new here - a standard effect), has
been a marked improvement in lung capacity. My sedentary lifestyle,
the Internet, and lack of interest in exercise has reduced at least
one aspect of my breathing: The length of time I can hold my breath.
As a teenager in very good shape, I could do about 2 and a half
minutes. Last year, before starting the nebulizer regimen, my last
timed test was just over a minute. I always hyperventilate several
breaths before starting the test and even so, a minute was really a
stretch. Probably normal I figured, for someone in their 60s. A couple
of months after I started nebulizing, I ran the test again, just like
I have so many times before. Holy Moley! The time was just under two
minutes! I thought I made a timing mistake so I repeated it. Two
minutes and five seconds! I have since repeated the same test about 5
times and the results are always a little more than 2 minutes.

Well, that did it for me. Nebulizing CS will be part of my daily
regimen from here on out.

Hope this helps,

Jimmy Joe

producing the higher TE and the yellowish color is a gravitational
influence, but that is merely conjectural. All the same, my hunch
is that some research would probably reveal a number of
manufacturing processes that take moon phase into account.

If anyone can educate me on this topic, I am willing to learn.

If you take two process that have a high probability of occurrence,
you will inevitably find a correlation between them, even though
  they have no connection.

I use a high-compliance current source (ascii circuit recently
posted), and Faraday's equations to time my cs.

I find the yellow tint starts occurring over a very small range of
ppm. In other words, the process saturates quickly, and is extremely
sensitive to the ion concentration at the end of the brew time. Just
one or two ppm difference is all it takes to make a brew that is
clear, or one that shows color.

Most people run with constant voltage and have no current limiting.

This means the brew can easily reach the current level needed to
produce silver oxide, which produces the tint. The process is out of
control, but the moon has no influence on the outcome.

People who do use current limiting generally run at high current
density. This means the regulator is saturated for a large portion
  of the brew time.

The production of oxide then depends on the diffusion of silver and
hydroxyl ions through the solution, which depends on the AC line
voltage at the time, the temperature of the dw, any convection
currents, and probably a dozen other variables. Again, the process
is out of control, and the moon has no influence on these factors.

The moon is too far away to influence any of the parameters that
affect the cs process. When you get unrepeatable results, you need
  to control these parameters better.

Best Regards,

Mike Monett

2003-09-30 Thread Ode Coyote

When a thousand people use the same generator and 2 or 3 people make a CS
that goes yellow over a period of time and not entirely consistantly at
that...I think there may be some other factor at work.
Perhaps hydrogen sulphides in the water and/or air? Acid rain? Something
that is acting as a catylist? ..something that's not common?
Limiting some factor further, like modifying the generator to make a
weaker product a little slower, may solve the immediate problem but not
reveal the cause.

BTW Mike, You are the only one to attribute color to oxides. I tend to
agree that there is some factor involving oxides, or a semi oxide of
silver that contributes to the formation of larger particles which display
the color due to their size.
...something akin to an oxygen atom presenting an attractive surface for
silver ions to crystalize around which unstable H2O2 can scavenge in it's
desire to attract another oxygen atom to make an O2 molecule and water,
thus break the crystal apart.
That's not to say that the oxide itself is presenting the color. It could
be that the structure of the crystal presents the color and it takes a
certain minimal number of silver atoms to make that configuration.

PS I took High School chemistry [a LONG time ago]...and that's about it.
I also took trade school metallurgy..for what that's worth. [not much more
than a clue]
..and spent a few young [late teen] years as an electroplater, both
chemical and electrical deposition. [copper, gold and zinc mostly]

I'm not about to second guess an engineer or chemist, but sometimes the
highly educated will miss the obvious that I cannot quantify.
I know some of both and have been known, in my practical ignorance of
detail..and convention, to present other pathways of investigation when
they got stumped.

Can anyone tell me where the electrons go when I make this CS?
Then I'll feel better about recommending the generator to others.
The ultimate goal is to get the purifiers to the poor who are
vulnerable to the ravages of diarrheal illnesses.

  Hi Ried,

Thank you for your very nice compliment via email. I am interested
in your project, and would like to encourage you to pursue it. There
is no reason anyone should suffer if we know simple and inexpensive
  ways to prevent it.

I don't know much about water purifiers using silver. But I wonder
if you could saturate the ceramic with your cs, then heat it perhaps
red hot. This might help convert the oxides into pure silver. I
believe this is used in some purifiers and also on the Space
Shuttle. Do you happen to know how they make them?

Before, when I was using high current density, I noticed that some
of the black oxides that used to collect in the bottom of the glass
would turn into silver from the pressure of wiping the jar clean.

The silver was difficult to remove with H2O2, so I'm pretty sure it
was elemental. Perhaps this would provide better protection against
bacteria in this application, and also help bond the silver to the
  ceramic.

I should do some research before making suggestions that might turn
out to be silly, but it's 6:54 am and I still haven't gone to bed
yet. I'll try to find some time later and see what turns up.

You might try asking some horse people, someone at a near by race track
or training facility. I do not know where to buy it in your country but
in the US it is sold by most horse supply companies in a liquid and a
gel form. The gel is handy for topical application. It should give you a
slight garlic taste when applied to your skin, within seconds. If it
does not then it is old or was improperly stored. It can and does go
bad. I keep mine in the fridge. I was also told that if it crystallizes
and turns solid it is no good.

I have talked to a vet opthamologist that has used it in horses eyes to
treat Uveitis (moonblindness) a common affliction of older horses that
eventually causes cataracts, retinal degeneration and shrinking of the
eyeball. He said it stings really bad. Still it could be worth it. Just
a warning on what to expect.

Ken, and all,
It is looking like I have found the problem, but I won't be 100% certain
until I have run a few more batches..
It is seems very likely that the problem is indeed a contaminant, and that the
contaminant(s) are the spray kitchen cleaners I use--1 spray bottle of peroxide
and 1 of white vinegar. I use these many times per day to clean counters, stove
top, sink, etc. and absolutely never gave it a thought.since stopping that
I have now made 3 perfectly clear batches, one in the Silvergen and 2 in the
Silverpuppy..
Both generators are *closed* very well in operation, so it never occurred to
me that contamination could happen with my sprays...however, looking round
the kitchen, I see that overspray could easily have also been getting onto the
paper towels I use to wipe electrodes.and how long spray mist particles
can stay suspended in air, I have no idea...
If the problem really is this simple, I'm going to gag over all the time I've
spent beating my head against the wall...But Trem says it could very well
be the vinegar

Brewed 3.5 hours without current limit; pH =6.98; and Ag+ =13.6 ppm, and
there was no change in the weight of the anode.
I guess the initial weight of 126.9 gm was too high to be able to detect the
weight loss.

The CS T.E. could only be seen in a dark room and almost no sparkles...very
good stuff.
I will replace the large anode with an anode that is 1/2 x 3.5 wet and
look for weight change. If I can't detect it then I will have to go an Aero
Space client of mine and use their lab balance. (50 miles round trip)

I have setup a current limiter at 6.3 mA and will run much longer.

I have attached the Wplot data. For those who do not have the Wplot16 or 32
.exe you can open the file with the notepad
to see the data.

Observation the high initial Cf in uS/cm causes a very fast generation of
CS.

To do this anode weight experiment is not as easy as putting it on
   paper!!

I ran 2 gallons, Initial Ci = 7.1 uS/cm using the large anode
which I weighed before run and did not touch the scale adjustment.

Brewed 3.5 hours without current limit; pH =6.98; and Ag+ =13.6
ppm, and there was no change in the weight of the anode. I guess

   Ole Bob

I knew you would run into problems. You are right at the limit of
resolution of your triple beam balance.

A smaller anode may not solve the problem. You are still looking for
a small change in mass. Your scale doesn't have enough resolution.

You might try running the brew longer, but eventually you will start
producing oxide that will stick to the anode and change the weight.

You probably need a better scale. Perhaps there is a university or
pharmaceutical supply company nearby that has a better balance? It
seems silly to have to drive 100 miles to weigh 100 milligrams:)

Maybe some amateur scientist has found a simple way to measure small
mass changes in large objects. I'll try to find some time to do a
  search.

If you do try a small anode, you might want to reduce the current to
keep the current density the same as the original. If you do, the
current regulator will probably come out of saturation and start
  producing constant current right away.

This makes it easier to do the calculations, since you don't have to
mess with integrating in WPlot. If you want me to help with the
calculations, let me know. But it would be good if you gave Mercury
a try. This program is amazing, and a great time-saver when you have
to deal with calculations involving unit conversions.

Why did the ppm drop from the original 38 to 13.6?

Best Regards,

Mike Monett

CSPh of Distilled water?

2003-09-30 Thread sol
What should the ph of distilled water be before making CS with it?
I used pH test strips and both my home-distilled water and commercial distilled
water are pH 3, my finished CS both clear and yellow batches are also pH 3.

My DH says he thinks DW should be 7?
(we did test the test strips with vinegar and with baking soda in water, and
they appear to be pretty accurate according to an old chemistry book)

2003-09-30 Thread Jonathan B. Britten

Hi, Mike,

Interesting comments. Thanks. However, I use current limiting, and
though I would not swear to that my observations are correct, I
believe they are.Certainly the moon has a strong influence on all
sorts of geologic and biological processes, from tidal flow to
menstrual flow to patterns of crime and manifestations of mental
illness, so I do not find it hard to believe that there is some lunar
influence on the water or the electrodes in my SG6.

Perhaps even a small change in Brownian motion could account for the
phenomenon I believe I have observed.I admit though that my
record-keeping is very casual. If I get myself a little lunar log
going I will post the results in future. As for all the possible
variables, of course no one can control them all. I can only say
that I have gotten yellow CS only during the full moon phase using my
SG6. Other variables could be the cause, though.

Thanks again.

I have observed the lunar influence on CS color on several
occasions. I hypothesize that the increased particle size
producing the higher TE and the yellowish color is a gravitational
influence, but that is merely conjectural. All the same, my hunch
is that some research would probably reveal a number of
manufacturing processes that take moon phase into account.

If anyone can educate me on this topic, I am willing to learn.

JBB

Mike Monett

Hi Mike,

Why the PPM drop I wish I knew, but it happens all of the time. When
Rich Adams and I ran a series that would pop up. No two runs were identical
as to PPM yet there data plots look a like.

It is not the chemicals as I have made repeats on the same lot and get the
same results. I am not alone in observing this. It has been reported
before.

If you have my data plot 5x8 Anode repro.plt, note line 2 of the heading.
The Batch was a rerun of 4+ ppm material and had a 48 hour break at hour #3
then a .8 hr brew, and things went wild!!! I just checked my raw data and at
the end of the 3 hour point the Ag+ was 8.58 PPM.

When the brew was restarted 48 hours later and ran for .8 hr the PPM went
wild.
While the PPM change drastically the conductivity only changed by 18%.

After about 800 color tests I have a pretty good idea of what the PPM will
be before actually measuring it. The color change is very significant.

If you would like a few more plots let me know.
