[SLUG] floppy umount not working
ok, stupid user question warning... I have some files I want ot copy to floppy... I mount the floppy and copy in the files. I go to umount it doesn't work... says the device is busy. I make sure I'm out of the directory - I am. I do a ps aux | grep fd0 and nothing shows up... nothing seems ot work... it keeps telling me that the device is busy... I randomly stumble around the web looking for stuff and trying things with the below results in a listing below... I especially got pretty confused when fuser kept throwing up random, different stuff... but then I don't *really* know what fuser does... suffice it to say - I'm stuck and don't even know where to begin to find a solution - I've tried everything I (in my limited knowledge) know what to do... and I really don't want to have to restart the machine to fix it... I'd rather know what went wrong so I don't do it again! [SLUG] PostgreSQL 8.0 release party
Hi all, It has been a long two months without the regular SydPUG meetings (due to a variety of factors). SydPUG convenes on the 1st Tuesday of the month, which means our next meeting will be the 1st February. We are planning on having a release party to celebrate 8.0 going wild. At the moment we are currently planning on having the party at the James Squire Brewrey House (JSBH) -- our regular meeting venue. However, depending on numbers we may move to larger location. If you are interested in attending please respond and let us know so we can gauge numbers. [SLUG] Further to "Poor Qantas Web Site"
Pleased to see that it wasn't just me having problems with Qantas site. Further to previous post. today I had to phone Qantas Reservations to get Frequent Flyer Points allocated for E-Ticket purchased yesterday ( that's another story). After sorting that out, I advised the phone rep that I had wasted at least half an hour trying to purchase ticket online using both Opera and Firefox browsers. He had "Never heard of these". I then mentioned that I was using Linux ( a "pregnant" pause at the other end of the line - whether from ignorance or whatever) and therefore didn't have access to IE and that undoubtedly Qantas' use of M$'s non-standard java or such was what was causing problems. Undoubtedly a waste of breath on my part, but with the reported take-up and use of Firefox, the phone reps will soon get sick of this. Unfortunately, being able to "use" a computer and a few apps in the workplace does not educate people about computers. Just like obtaining a driver's licence does not make a driver, only a motorist. Thanks to those who advised that I use WebJet in future. FIXED: Debian 2.6.8 kernel not loading device drivers for / (Re: [SLUG] /dev/console not found)
A followup on my problem with putting Debian's build of the 2.6.8 kernel on a machine whose root partition is on a SATA drive (Silicon Image SATA controller)... more for the benefit of the archives than anything else. First a brief recap since my original message [1] was a month ago: I tried to upgrade a system running kernel 2.6.3 (Debian build, with an initrd) to Debian's build of 2.6.8. I was getting this error: pivot_root: No such file or directory /sbin/init: 424: cannot open dev/console: No such file Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init! Eventually the consensus was tha the initrd mustn't be loading the appropriate driver for my SATA drive before attempting to pivot_root to my root partition, hence causing the kernel to panic. Anyway, after a bunch of mucking around I finally got it to work like this: 1. As per [2], edit /etc/mkinitrd/modules to contain a line with the name of the driver it should use for the drive containing the root partition. In the case of the Silicon Image controller there is a choice of drivers: - sata_sil, the libata driver that makes the drive behave like a scsi device. I believe this is the preferred driver now. - siimage, the old driver that makes it behave like an ide device. I haven't actually tested this one in 2.6.8, although I was using it in 2.6.3 2. Reinstall the kernel package (I believe this is just the easiest way of getting it to build a new initrd with the right module included). 2a. If you went with sata_sil above, make sure you fix your bootloader to point at /dev/sdaX as the root partition rather than /dev/hdeX before rebooting 3. Reboot into new kernel I found this out after quite a bit of mucking around with initrds and cramfs which I won't bother you with. I do hope I never need that arcane knowledge again. :) -Mary [1] http://lists.slug.org.au/archives/slug/2004/12/msg00083.html [2] http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2005/01/msg00342.html -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

[SLUG] Poor Qantas Web Site
Anybody tried booking an online fare with Qantas (Qaint-ass?). Just wasted an inordinate amount of time trying to do so firstly with Opera, then with FireFox. Finally, guessing at the problem, tried (what else) IE, to find that the site uses pop-ups that give no indication of existing when using a REAL browser. Heaven help those without the ability to use (when all else fails) IE. At least JAL doesn't have this "problem". No wonder poor old Qantas is trying to send jobs off-shore to save money. Perhaps they'd be better off sending their IT off-shore. They might get more business online then. That's my rant for the day. Totally PO'd off with Qantas.
