[SLUG] floppy umount not working

2005-01-18 Thread Taryn East
ok, stupid user question warning...

I have some files I want ot copy to floppy... I mount the floppy and
copy in the files. I go to umount it doesn't work... says the device is
busy.

I make sure I'm out of the directory - I am. I do a ps aux | grep fd0
and nothing shows up...

nothing seems ot work... it keeps telling me that the device is busy...
I randomly stumble around the web looking for stuff and trying things
with the below results in a listing below...

I especially got pretty confused when fuser kept throwing up random,
different stuff... but then I don't *really* know what fuser does...

suffice it to say - I'm stuck and don't even know where to begin to find
a solution - I've tried everything I (in my limited knowledge) know what
to do... and I really don't want to have to restart the machine to fix
it... I'd rather know what went wrong so I don't do it again!

Is anyone able to help me out?

thanks in advance,
Taryn

I know how to do what you want, but you should be able to easily get a

If you do wish to stick junk all over your filesystem and screwing up

mkdir /tmp/foo
rpm --root /tmp/foo -i foo.rpm --noscripts --nodeps.
Will pretend /tmp is your root filesystem, only changing the files and

[SLUG] PostgreSQL 8.0 release party

2005-01-18 Thread Anand Kumria
Hi all,

It has been a long two months without the regular SydPUG meetings (due
to a variety of factors).

SydPUG convenes on the 1st Tuesday of the month, which means our next
meeting will be the 1st February.

We are planning on having a release party to celebrate 8.0 going wild.

At the moment we are currently planning on having the party at the James
Squire Brewrey House (JSBH) -- our regular meeting venue. However,
depending on numbers we may move to larger location.

If you are interested in attending please respond and let us know so we
can gauge numbers.

Thanks,
Anand

Make sure the power supplies are international/auto-switching. We had some
visitors from Japan mid last year that had to rush out and buy some generic
"Targus" power supplies as the units from shipped with them (purchased
in .jp) were 110/115V ONLY.

Other than that, I'd stick to brands you've seen in Australia (for parts etc).
I've had good service and support for 2nd lappies from both Toshiba and IBM.

YMMV - have fun!

I've bought tickets from Qantas several times using Galeon 1.2.something
on Linux (RH 7.3) and it's always worked.

The only problem I have is that they send the confirmation email with a
pdf attachment with content type "application/octet-stream" instead of
"application/pdf".

[SLUG] Further to "Poor Qantas Web Site"

2005-01-18 Thread Bill
Pleased to see that it wasn't just me having problems with Qantas site.
Further to previous post. today I had to phone Qantas Reservations to get
Frequent Flyer Points allocated for E-Ticket purchased yesterday ( that's
another story).

After sorting that out, I advised the phone rep that I had wasted at least
half an hour trying to purchase ticket online using both Opera and Firefox
browsers. He had "Never heard of these". I then mentioned that I was using
Linux ( a "pregnant" pause at the other end of the line - whether from
ignorance or whatever) and therefore didn't have access to IE and that
undoubtedly Qantas' use of M$'s non-standard java or such was what was
causing problems.

Undoubtedly a waste of breath on my part, but with the reported take-up and
use of Firefox, the phone reps will soon get sick of this.

Unfortunately, being able to "use" a computer and a few apps in the
workplace does not educate people about computers. Just like obtaining a
driver's licence does not make a driver, only a motorist.

Thanks to those who advised that I use WebJet in future.

Dear list,

How does the SLUG community feel about creating some course(s) for the new
Aust Tech Colloges for the federal government?

Expression of interest closes 18th Feb 2005.

To quote the website:

http://www.dest.gov.au/schools/technicalcolleges/#3

"The Australian Government will establish 24 Australian Technical Colleges
providing high quality tuition in both academic and vocational education for
students in Years 11 and 12. The Technical Colleges will be located in
regions suffering skills shortages, with high rates of youth unemployment;
and supported by a significant industry base.

The establishment of Australian Technical Colleges will further strengthen
Australiaâs vocational education and training system and promote pride and
excellence in the acquisition of trade skills."

There is no question I am just stating facts. You can not authenticate
with a windows AD using a samba version < 3.0.
Ah, thank you. I think this was what you were trying to say earlier
but
I didn't understand.

way. If you want to add a local SAMBA password and user name to the
machine, you have to use the smbpassword command. SAMBA user
accounts
and system user accounts are not the same thing.
I know that, and this all worked perfectly before the DC upgrade.
The
account exists, with the same password, both locally and on the
domain
controller.
It clearly doesnt exist in the smbpassword file or you would be able
to
log in locally.
It clearly *does* exist (and I've always been able to login locally):
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ grep johnc /etc/samba/smbpasswd

johnc:500::
:[U ]:LCT-:John
Clarke

I bet if you comment out the pam_smb stuff you will still be able to
log in.
Yes, as johnc. However, I've tried a different username which has a
local account (in both /etc/passwd and /etc/samba/smbpasswd) but does
not have a password in /etc/shadow, and it can login if pam_smb is
enabled, but not if pam_smb is disabled. It looks to me like pam_smb
can authenticate with AD.

The Qantas website is terrible. I travel at least a week of every month
and will never book flights through the site.

I can't be bothered sending an email. Fuck them if they don't want my
business. Pardon the French (actually I think that was English).

Perhaps they did want your business, though I wouldn't blame them if
they changed their mind after an outburst like that.
Perhaps it's cheaper for them to employ phone operators to talk to
cranky Free Software users than it is to test that their web site works
with multiple browsers.
Perhaps it's cheaper for you to arrange your regular ticketing through
a travel agent. They can often get good deals, and might even make you
a nice cup of tea if you need to relax.

Er, did I ever say I'd ring Qantas and be cranky with them? Or do you
think bad language means someone is angry?

Qantas's website being lame simply means I use another website
(specifically, webjet) to book my travel. If what I think is correct,
when I travel Qantas through webjet, they'll get less commission on the
fare.

Mike

its just that there's very
Conrad.

FIXED: Debian 2.6.8 kernel not loading device drivers for / (Re: [SLUG] /dev/console not found)

2005-01-18 Thread Mary Gardiner
A followup on my problem with putting Debian's build of the 2.6.8 kernel
on a machine whose root partition is on a SATA drive (Silicon Image SATA
controller)... more for the benefit of the archives than anything else.

First a brief recap since my original message [1] was a month ago: I
tried to upgrade a system running kernel 2.6.3 (Debian build, with an
initrd) to Debian's build of 2.6.8. I was getting this error:

pivot_root: No such file or directory
/sbin/init: 424: cannot open dev/console: No such file
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

Eventually the consensus was tha the initrd mustn't be loading the
appropriate driver for my SATA drive before attempting to pivot_root to
my root partition, hence causing the kernel to panic.

Anyway, after a bunch of mucking around I finally got it to work like this:

 1. As per [2], edit /etc/mkinitrd/modules to contain a line with the
name of the driver it should use for the drive containing the root
 partition.

In the case of the Silicon Image controller there is a choice of
 drivers:

  - sata_sil, the libata driver that makes the drive behave like a scsi
device. I believe this is the preferred driver now.
  - siimage, the old driver that makes it behave like an ide device. I
haven't actually tested this one in 2.6.8, although I was using it
in 2.6.3

 2. Reinstall the kernel package (I believe this is just the easiest way
of getting it to build a new initrd with the right module included).

2a. If you went with sata_sil above, make sure you fix your bootloader
to point at /dev/sdaX as the root partition rather than /dev/hdeX
 before rebooting

 3. Reboot into new kernel

I found this out after quite a bit of mucking around with initrds and
cramfs which I won't bother you with. I do hope I never need that arcane
knowledge again. :)

The Qantas website is terrible. I travel at least a week of every month
and will never book flights through the site.

I can't be bothered sending an email. Fuck them if they don't want my
business. Pardon the French (actually I think that was English).

[SLUG] Poor Qantas Web Site

2005-01-18 Thread Bill
Anybody tried booking an online fare with Qantas (Qaint-ass?).
Just wasted an inordinate amount of time trying to do so firstly with
Opera, then with FireFox.

Finally, guessing at the problem, tried (what else) IE, to find that the
site uses pop-ups that give no indication of existing when using a REAL
browser. Heaven help those without the ability to use (when all else fails) IE.

At least JAL doesn't have this "problem". No wonder poor old Qantas is
trying to send jobs off-shore to save money. Perhaps they'd be better off
sending their IT off-shore. They might get more business online then.

That's my rant for the day.
Totally PO'd off with Qantas.

The first hit came two minutes after I sent the email (from .nl), and
the first download half an hour later. Not bad.

Have any of you actually run it yet?

Cheers,
