RE: [RCSE] Stiffening up a flexiable fiberglass fuselage

2001-12-20 Thread Marc Gellart

After finally reading a couple of these, I agree with most everything guys
are saying. But if you want to find the best foam product out there, Tower
Hobbies (ya, the monster) sells a two part mixed foam that's absolutely the
best out there, and it is a chemical cure, so no doughy spots. Also, I use
a monoject syringe to inject it 10cc's at a time starting at the back and
working forward, there is a plug back there to stop rearward movement. By
using 10cc at a time, injecting it controls the placement, and working
forward you, never end up exploding a fuse.

Has anyone ever tried stiffening up a flexiable or weak fiberglass
fuselage by squirting that expandable foam ( the kind you use on your
house to seal out leaks around windows, doors, etc.) down the inside
of the fuse?

I've done this on quite a lot of fuses with excellent results, so much so
that I use it on all my planes. It does tighten up the fuse and will help to
stop it from crushing. It also pins the control cables in place. It adds
minimal weight to the fuse because you only need a tiny amount to fill a
fuse. Its not without its drawbacks, though.

1) This stuff expands quite a lot. You have to provide it somewhere to
expand to. If you don't it will force itself into places you don't want. It
also has the potential to damage structures.

2) Its sticky. If it gets where you don't want it getting it off is going to
be a pain. (Also see #5)

3) Its abrasive. If it gets into things it shouldn't -- e.g. servos -- it
can damage them.

4) Its not a structural material. It can help to add strength but it can't
substitute for a proper structure. (Repair the fuse first, then stiffen it.)

5) It has the potential to create a mess in the workshop that dwarfs in
scale and scope anything most people have experienced.

Polyurethane foam isn't the best raw material for us. We can dream of the
day that we see an aerosol can of EPP on the hardware store shelves!

[RCSE] OVSS Final Scores Up

2001-12-20 Thread Marc Gellart

For all concerned, the final OVSS scores for 2001 are up on the website.
Jim Bacus has done a great job and has kept the site in great shape all
year, pictures included. The address for the site is
www.jimbacus.net/soaring/OVSS2001/OVSS2001.html

I will also put this out. Fall Round Up will be in Muncie Spetember 14-15,
2002. LOFT tried to get Labor Day weekend again, but we are not allowed to
fly with the FF guys anymore because they said there were problems, I do not
remember any, but who knows. Hopefully, the schedule will gel here pretty
quick and we will know what is up for 2002 OVSS.

I've been flying the Logic DHL. Simply put, this style of hlg flying makes
the traditional throwing obsolete... The hight is amazing... Even with no
prior DHL experience this plane has shown no sign of wear or stress. The

Hi Bill,

Nice post.

Regarding line stretch: Have you ever launched with monofilament line on
the drum? If not, I suggest you do so. Winch launching will never be
the same. As a small bonus, you can use a shorter winch to turnaround
distance.

RE: [RCSE] LIFTROLL curves

2001-12-20 Thread Bill Swingle

The Local Cl curve helps you to evaluate the wings tendency to tip stall.

The Lift Distribution tells how close the wing comes to the ideal elliptical
distribution and thus the minimum induced drag.

Which is more important depends on your personal tastes and what the plane
is intended to do. Most of the time both are fairly important.

[RCSE] 4.5M - 5M Foil?

2001-12-20 Thread Bill Swingle

 thoughts / opinions on a 4.5 - 5M DG-600 foil.?

This is interesting. Roughly speaking the bigger the RE#'s the better. Thus,
the bigger chords seen on a 5M plane would be good. Thus, you could choose
whatever foil you'd normally choose.

However, is it really that straight forward? Or, perhaps is it necessary to
use a foil designed for the higher RE#'s?

Gavin? Blain? John? Joe? Any big plane foil opinions?

NiCd and Ni-MH charge the same, except that Ni-MH have a much less

point when most chargers turn off or switch to a very low rate like

[RCSE] HELP! - TopFlite Metrick

Hello Anyone,

I'm just back into the r/c soaring stuff after 20 some
years... anyway I just finished my TopFlite Metrick
that had been 95% finished and stored away since 1981.
(I bought this at the time since I could only dream of
owning a Hobie Hawk - I was 17 then!)

I would like to connect with anyone who has any
experience with one of these birds. I built mine with
the spoilers.

I think at the time it was supposed to be a pretty
hi-perf plane... but not to todays standard I'm sure.

In particular if you have anything on what the throw
of the rudder and elevator should be.

Also, What are the flying characteristics?

Anything would be helpful... is there a vintage
class I can fly in???!!!

Thanks,
