Re: REAL innovation

2014-03-21 Thread Eugene Flormata
Not sure if anyone else is running win 7 and have these apps. I have
substance 4 painter / designer 4 / bitmap2material. And I just bought that
ddo and ndo preorder.

Ndo constantly crashes on creative cloud photoshop, and wants to keep
updating. But just downloads the same version over and over. Guess I gotta
wait for the suite to come out. Bitmap2 material just keeps crashing as
well. The only one I can get to work is substance designer. Which works
great. But seems to chug if you're workin with 4k textures, and doesn't
seem to play nice with multi uv squares outside the 0-1 area, like Mari
does so well.

I like the concept behind substance though. And it's the only one that
works right now. Substance painter I can't even figure out how to paint
only specific areas.

RE: REAL innovation

2014-03-20 Thread adrian wyer
i spent ages dicking about with procedural ways of getting worn and
scratched edges in the rendertree, got some pretty good results too, just as
we switched to arnold :o/

haven't bothered trying again, but with quixel or substance designer, i
won't have to!

This has been around for some time now primarily for game artists. It's
a huge time saver in texture map material setup and iteration for sure.
And being able to preview results in photoshop is real nice.

Now if we would have a ddo material manager similar to the max and maya
equivalent (shown here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BboBgjGARc,
max at start and maya at 23min in) for softimage, we'd be set.

I should add that ddo comes with a material fbx that can be used with
xsi's existing material manager so writing a new tool is probably not
necessary. If your in game work and you need to bake out a material id
onto a low poly model, then that's a bit of problem given softimage has
no bake cage feature. But then there are arduous work around approaches,
like having to separate the high and low poly pieces before baking.

Seems like this is a pretty big step.

As far as the material ID thing.. I figured I could just rendermap or
ultimaper some constant colors to a map.Mud box has some good baking tools.

Re: REAL innovation

2014-03-20 Thread Siew Yi Liang
Heh, I'm at GDC now, and I actually just walked past the Quixel booth a
few times before gathering the nerve to talk to Teddy (CEO) himself :P
He wouldn't let me personally try the
completely-rewritten-from-ground-up DDO, but he did demonstrate to me
live their new workflow for 3DO that can connect directly to
VRay/Arnold/Maxwell, and he said that they're planning to get SSS in
their 3DO previewer (basically match Toolbag's features one-for-one), so
whether for film/games, they want to be a real competitor now...and I
imagine the Arnold connection part should have you guys excited :) I am!

And it's SO much faster, for those of you who have been cursing
dDo's clunkiness previously. Like, not truly interactive yet, but close.
And this was on shitty demo hardware, too. :D The new UI is also a lot
less 'tiny button' based and easier to work with.

Between this and Substance Painter, it's a great time to be an
environment artist. Too bad I animate/rig mostly...

Yours sincerely,
Siew Yi Liang

Re: REAL innovation

2014-03-20 Thread Siew Yi Liang
Hi, sorry, was out of the loop walking around the expo trying to find a
job...(heh) finally got back to the hotel!

Anyway:

UDIMs and loading multi-textures are currently NOT supported in the
current release of dDo (this is why I was playing with Substance as well
in my own texturing workflow), however, in the new upcoming release of
DDO, they ARE in. Well, I'm not 100% sure about UDIM specifically, but
Teddy said he's hoping to get it in.

Multi-texture workflow is definitely in, though, he was demonstrating it
right in front of me: there's a whole new UI that allows you to select
different parts of the model or different meshes, and apply different
materials/textures to each of them. And all this is MUCH faster than
before, not realtime like I mentioned, but close.

Also I talked to Waqar (co-founder) and he says the ultimate roadmap
would be to get DDO/NDO seperated from Photoshop as much as possible so
that they can be free of the inherent speed limitations that come with
that, plus they would be able to integrate into other DCCs better :D (I
asked him about possible Substance collab and he smiled and just said
that they'd have to see about it, understandable)

But yea, they're really nice and were willing to answer all my silly
questions even though I'm not a pro from a big studio, so I'm super
excited for the release :D Plus with the new discounted prices ($50
bucks for each license for hobbyists?!?!) I can't see how getting their
tools would be a bad idea in any way possible!

Ok I'll stop sounding like a marketing shill now...

Yours sincerely,
Siew Yi Liang

excited for the release :D Plus with the new discounted prices ($50
bucks for each license for hobbyists?!?!) I can't see how getting
their tools would be a bad idea in any way possible!

Ok I'll stop sounding like a marketing shill now...
Yours sincerely,

I read a statement by Teddy Bergsman (ceo) in a dated thread that
tiled uv's are supported. At that time (2011) he said they were
working on support with most features. I have a copy along with
pre-purchase of the suite so there's one way to find out

Nevertheless, yes it's amazing how the NDO from the early days in
