[speedtouch] Re: Speedtouch line going down under Linux

2009-10-12 Thread Ed Vaessen

 Hi Ed,

A search through the WindowsXP directory brought to light that the very
old file alcaudsl.sys is still there. Not a suprise as I used the
installation disk from 06-06-2002 to load the speedtouch driver under
WindowsXP after I had installed WindowsXP. So I suppose it is the one
 used
 by WindowsXp.

 file: /Windows/C/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/alcaudsl.sys
 md5sum: 8080b5ea17a763bbce6c92bbc6ceefe8

The firmware files that I have been using for years for all Linux
 distributions are:
 /lib/firmware/speedtch-1.bin
 md5sum: be58aef97d8435dce070c96574c06564
 /lib/firmware/speedtch-2.bin
 md5sum: 4dc23adb72007919f30d50ebcf222f8a

I tried to find the .inf files that contain the words you mentioned
 using
 search commands like:

grep -rsiH modem /Windows/C/WINDOWS/* | grep -rsi option
grep -rsiH DSL /Windows/C/WINDOWS/* | grep -rsi Max

but none had anything the like.

 try searching for alcaudsl.

alcaudsl is found in file
/Windows/C/WINDOWS/setupapi.log
and
/Windows/C/WINDOWS/inf/oem9.inf

What file setupapi.log says is that it understands the driver program to
be of 06-06-2002, what matches with the date of alcaudsl.sys and that it
installs from section [alcaudsl.Install] in h:\windows\inf\oem9.inf.

Looks as if alcaudsl.sys is the microcode that is loaded.

 I only find the files
 /Windows/C/WINDOWS/inf/oem8.inf
 /Windows/C/WINDOWS/inf/oem9.inf
that contain words like speedtouch or alcatel.

So, as a consequence, I do not find any parameter information.
Suppose I boot into WindowsXP, is there some manner in which I can
retrieve information about the parameters you mentioned?

Not really. You can use a usb snooper to see what windows is sending
to the modem, but that's not for the faint hearted.

Do you see the message OAM not supported in dmesg output?

No. It is not there.

Would it be an idea to use the alcaudsl.sys microcode as suggested in the
README file of the speedtouchconf project?
Alternatively: can you tell me how to change parameters of the speedtch
module using the modprobe command?

Regards,

Ed

2009-10-11 Thread Ed Vaessen

 Hi Ed,

pop up every 10 minutes. What is strange is that this behavior does not
happen under WindowsXP. Distributions like OpenSuSE however suffer from
this problem. Ubuntu 9.04 is even worse. Under Unbuntu, the modem is
 more
busy with synchronizing than with serving my connection.

perhaps the modem needs newer firmware to handle these speeds. Are you
using the same firmware as with windows XP? It may also be that the
modem needs to be initialized differently (all kinds of mysterious stuff
happens at modem initialization time, and it's not clear what it is).
In the windows .inf file you may find settings like BMaxDSL,
ModemMode and ModemOption, perhaps not with exactly those names.
These seem to be important parameters, and we managed to implement them
as module parameters for the speedtch module. The default values are
 8128, 11 and 0x10,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x20 respectively. Try changing
these to the values you see in your .inf file. The values can be set
 using modprobe.

 Good luck,

 Duncan.

I had to switch to WindowsXP te maintain a normal connection. Under
OpenSuSE the line is going down nearly every minute this evening.
So far the advantages of xs4all with their upgrade that I never asked for...

 Hi Duncan,

Duncan, what about adding speed, signal strength, agreed ADSL
 standard and
bins composition to the driver's procfs file?

Unfortunately I don't know how to get anything except the speed. The
speed is already reported to the ATM layer.

I see. Lacking firmware documentation seems a common problem with these
 devices, isn't it?

 Bonsoir,

 Giampaolo

[speedtouch] Speedtouch line going down under Linux

2009-10-10 Thread Ed Vaessen

My provider, xs4all in the Netherlands, has served me well for 8 years.
Since last summer however, after they changed the properties of the
connection (it was upgraded to 6112 kb/s down, 832 kb/s up) things got
problematic.
The first is that the synchronizing of my speedtouch 330 modem (the purple
one) takes much longer now. Since the synchronizing takes place during
boot time, that generally is not such a big problem. What is a problem is
that, especially late at night, the modem goes down frequently. Message
like:

Oct 10 23:19:08 linux-31l4 kernel: ATM dev 0: DSL line goes down
Oct 10 23:19:08 linux-31l4 kernel: ATM dev 0: ADSL line is down
Oct 10 23:19:50 linux-31l4 kernel: ATM dev 0: DSL line goes up
Oct 10 23:19:50 linux-31l4 kernel: ATM dev 0: ADSL line is up (6080 kb/s
down | 832 kb/s up)

pop up every 10 minutes. What is strange is that this behavior does not
happen under WindowsXP. Distributions like OpenSuSE however suffer from
this problem. Ubuntu 9.04 is even worse. Under Unbuntu, the modem is more
busy with synchronizing than with serving my connection.

Has anyone ever experienced this problem?

Ed

[speedtouch] Unable to connect speedtouch 330 to internet on Fedora 11

2009-10-08 Thread Ed Vaessen

I have severe problems in getting the purple speedtouch 330 to establish
an internet connection on Fedora 11.
After installation of Fedora, I copy the files speedtch-1.bin and
speedtch-2.bin to /lib/firmware.
After plugging in the modem, the /var/log/messages shows it synchronizes:

ATM dev 0: ADSL line is up (6112 kb/s down | 832 kb/s up)

So far, so good. The problem is how to tell the system to add a
DSL-connection with ppp over atm. I first try to use the tools that Fedora
gives me:

Preferences-Network Connections
Here I can add a DSL, which asks me for a username, password and a
service. What is a service?
Authentication methods chap and pap are enabled
The IP4 settings only let me choose between two methods for ppp0E and one
'manual' which aks me things I do not understand. My impression is that
ppp over atm is unknown.
I go no further along this path.

Administration-Network gives me the possibility to add a new device, to
choose from several device types, among which xSDL. If I choose that one,
it wants me to install package rp-pppoe. Once again ppp over atm is
unknown.
I avoid this approach too.

I decided to follow the instructions for speedtouch 330 installation for
several distributions on sourceforge.
These tell me to create the file ifcfg-ppp0
Of course I change the entries
USER='usern...@isp'
VPI=vpi-number
VCI=vci-number
to my personal settings

I also create a file named secrets, once again changing the contents to my
personal settings.
I copy these files to other places using the commands:

install -m400 ifcfg-ppp0 /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
install -m400 secrets /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
install -m400 secrets /etc/ppp/pap-secrets

Having done this, I reboot. The line goes up, but there is no connection.
Not even a message that it is trying to authenticate.
I would expect module pppoatm to be loaded, but it is not.
I 'modprobe' this module it and it appears, together with some other modules:

pppoatm 4528 0
ppp_generic23416 1 pppoatm
slhc5200 1 ppp_generic
atm41168 2 pppoatm,usbatm

I disconnect and reconnect the modem. The line comes uo again but still no
authentication after that, no even an effort to do so.

Going to Adminstration-Network, I see that a device ppp0 now is there as
type xSDL, though inactive. And the hardware is seen as an ethernet type
with device 'pan0'.

Things are certainly more easy with OpenSuSE and Mandriva.

[speedtouch] Re: [OT] Unable to connect speedtouch 330 to internet on Fedora 11

2009-10-08 Thread Ed Vaessen

I have severe problems in getting the purple speedtouch 330 to
 establish
an internet connection on Fedora 11.
After installation of Fedora, I copy the files speedtch-1.bin and
 speedtch-2.bin to /lib/firmware.
After plugging in the modem, the /var/log/messages shows it
 synchronizes:

 ATM dev 0: ADSL line is up (6112 kb/s down | 832 kb/s up)

 Hi Ed,

please note this is a bit OT here because your ADSL connection seems to
work. You simply can't get pppd to work with it.

Anyway, the problem is probably in the pppd invocation. In one of my
 nodes,
 I have the following:

 /usr/sbin/pppd unit 0 user x remotename ppp0 linkname ppp0
 defaultroute
 persist maxfail 0 holdoff 30 ipcp-accept-remote lcp-echo-interval 12
 lcp-echo-failure 5 plugin passwordfd.so passwordfd 3 connect true plugin
 pppoatm.so vc-encaps 0.8.35

 Pppoatm works fine there.

Please note pppd can't connect via an ADSL modem directly: it has to use
 the
pppoatm plugin, which generally is brought by the pppd package itself. The
runstring with which pppd is invoked should show a 'plugin pppoatm.so
 ENCAP
[ITF.]VPI.VCI' somewhere, otherwise you are not using the pppoatm
 plugin...

Hello Giampaolo,

Thank you for the information.
Since my file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 contains the line
LINUX_PLUGIN=pppoatm.so, the problem is that the file is simply not
invoked?
It explains why the module pppoatm is never loaded automatically.

Where does one invoke the line
/usr/sbin/pppd unit 0 user x remotename ppp0 linkname ppp0
defaultroute persist maxfail 0 holdoff 30 ipcp-accept-remote
lcp-echo-interval 12 lcp-echo-failure 5 plugin passwordfd.so passwordfd 3
connect true plugin pppoatm.so vc-encaps 0.8.35 ?

Check that this is your case.

 ...omissis...

Things are certainly more easy with OpenSuSE and Mandriva.

Thank you for the information: I didn't know OpenSuSE and Mandriva did
support pppoatm. You mean via gui, right?

 Giampaolo

OpenSuSE and Mandriva do not fully support the speedtouch 330. The
problem is the firmware, which is not loaded automatically (though
Mandriva Ppowerpack seems to see to this too).
But once the ADSL line is up, the configuration via a gui is very
straightforward under both OpenSuse and Mandriva.
Now I must admit that this is my first try wth Fedora and the installation
DVD seems to be a bit buggy.
My experiences with Ubuntu are not all to pleasant too. In fact someone
had to write explicitly an usbadslmodemmanager package to get things going
there.

 Hi Ed and Paul

Paul: thanks for the link to the UBuntu help site. The set up procedure
looks very similar, so I will have to go through them carefully and
 compare.

Ed: I have no file /etc/ppp/peers/usbadslmodem, so this is something else
 I
need to look into, thank you.

Whilst switching between desktops, I did notice the message come up on
booting stating The Speedtouch Firmware did not load. This seems to be
 a
vital clue; does anyone have any suggestions ?

If the firmware doesn't load, no connection can be made at all.
Are the files speedtch-1.bin and speedtch-2.bin present in /lib/firmware?
This is how my /lib/firmware looks:

drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2007-04-15 13:53 2.6.20-15-generic

I have checked the contents of /proc/net/atm which is as follows:

  /proc/net/atm/arp
  /proc/net/atm/devices
  /proc/net/atm/pvc
  /proc/net/atm/speedtch:0
That mean your speedtouch is there as the first atm device.

  /proc/net/atm/svc
  /proc/net/atm/vc

These are all empty texts files registering 0 bytes.

This is special files
You have to do so to see the content
cat /proc/net/atm/speedtch:0

You could report content of all files inside /proc/net/atm with this one
liner
  find /proc/net/atm -exec cat {} \;

With the informations displayed by those files, you could know what has
been
send and received.

Please report too what appear when you start the connection.

[speedtouch] Re: Firmware Speedtouch 330 not loaded

2007-07-31 Thread Ed Vaessen

Hello David,

Funny things happened. Since the OpenSuSE 10.2 DVD that I got from a
magazine and with which (as said) I could not get the firmware loaded at
boot time or at hotplug, I downloaded an openSuSE 10.2 iso from
http://software.opensuse.org/. That downloaded version was installed on my
laptop, I copied the firmware speedtch-1.bin and speedtch-2.bin in
/lib/firmware and the ADSL line went up!
When looking at the directory tree, I found that in directory

/lib/modules/2.6.18.2-34-default/kernel/drivers/usb the subdirectory atm
is present, where it was not present when I tried the magazine DVD. That
same magazine DVD however, when installed on my desktop, succeeded in
getting the ADSL line up.
As far as I can guess, the magazine DVD, when installed on my laptop, gets
confused a bit.

 Hi there,
   Go to the following site.
  http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/suse/index.html
It gives you a step by step guide to get st330 working on 10.2.
It works its what I use on my OpenSuSE 10.2

  Davids C. Findlay

[speedtouch] No connection after some time. Pulling the plug works.

2006-03-17 Thread Ed Vaessen

My SuSE 10.0 PC is running a program for several days now. Until
yesterday, I could succesfully connect to the internet.
I returned this evening and wanted to check out my e-mail.
The Kinternet tool was clicked on and it tried to make the connection. But
it did not succeed. So I checked /var/log/messages:

Mar 18 00:56:34 AtemboPC SuSEfirewall2: Firewall rules successfully set
Mar 18 00:56:34 AtemboPC modify_resolvconf: Service smpppd-ifcfg modified

Mar 18 00:56:34 AtemboPC pppd[12823]: Connect: dsl0 -- 8.48

There it got stuck.
When it became clear that the connection would not be made, I
right-clicked on Kinternet to give the hangup command and directly
afterwards I clicked on it to try connection again:
