I just updated my local server yesterday.looks like it’s about
ready.

Please keep in mind that LMS8 might prompt the user to update daily (or
whenever there's a change being comitted). That's probably not for
everybody...

Managing your collection. I assume you mean moving files, adding new
etc
You can easily install and enable Samba or if Windows use something like
WinSCP and don’t bother with Samba at all.

Moving locations. Yes easy as long as you know how to identify it’s new
IP on a Friends etc network. Ideally a server should have a static (DHCP
reserved IP) but obviously it will pick up a new one when it moves
around. If using a player as well on the same Pi then inside Squeezelite
settings set the connect to server as 127.0.0.1 (will always then try to
connect to the LMS running on the same Pi)

Thank you to all for the quality feedback.

Thank you Greg for reminding me that Squeezelite can be disabled. I
haven't thought about that. Presumably then the 'player' doesn't exist
and doesn't show up in the list of players - which is what I want.

About the UPS, some of us might feel we can just go in and fix a
problem, if it shows up, but I much prefer no problems at all, hence the
UPS. My feel for the USB based power supply to RPis is that they're a
bit sensitive to connection failure. The trick is to shut down LMS
nicely, but again without experience I am just assuming this is easily
implemented with a script - most UPS's communicate over the I2C port. It
will require a small (tiny) hack.

Technically one wouldn't need a shutdown button, since pulling the plug
will trigger the UPS to execute a soft shutdown... but if the UPS comes
with a button, I'd accept and drill a hole in the case for it.

I agree one could just keep the music collection on a NAS, but I also
like the idea that with the server (with storage) and the player, one
can bring these two devices to other places (family and friends,
vacation homes, Hi-Fi show rooms). Just plug the devices in and connect
over a simple network (a switch should do).

I like the idea of two USB-pens and one of them as failover ... I guess
this is the only part, which isn't straightforward in the current
piCorePlayer-based server.

Is there any way to manage your music collection on piCore'Server' ... ?
... I'm thinking about something user friendly, maybe GUI based?

Best regards,
Claus

If you search for an easy way to shutdown such a Pi with LMS, you can
look into this thread:
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?111546-Using-Argon-One-case-with-fan-and-powerbutton-together-with-piCorePlayer=961984=1#post961984
You will find the script which is necessary to make use of the power
button of that enclosure together with piCorePlayer which is customized
by paul-.
This works very well!

There are several UPS Pi HATs available -- see, eg,

I timed it today. Not including installing plugins and upgrading LMS to
v8 it was less than 10 mins. I have done it quite a few times though.

PS I think maybe 8.0 should now be the version pCP installs by default

And you don’t have to trash your Synology NAS. Keep your music there and
mount it as a drive from within piCorePlayer so LMS can use it.
As long as both devices are wired there won’t be any issue whatsoever

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] A server for us

2020-05-14 Thread Greg Erskine

Hey Claus,

Good news. I think everything you want has been done. :)

I've been running LMS on RPi''s not long after the original RPi was
released.

We decide to keep piCorePlayer as a single image for both player and
server. Just install the LMS extension and turn off squeezelite if you
want.

I agree with Paul Webster regarding UPS and backups, depending on a
reasonable power in your area.

With a bit of practice it takes about 5 minutes to build a player and
about 15 minutes for a server.

regards
Greg

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] A server for us

2020-05-14 Thread Paul Webster

There are a lot of people here and elsewhere using a Raspberry Pi to run
LMS - and many using pCP to do it (it is not just a player).
Unless you live in a area with lots of power cuts it is probably not
worth (in my opinion) worrying much about losing the system on a bad
power down event.

A backup (or 2) of the music library is usually enough.
A rebuild (or using SD card backup) of LMS with a complete rescan of the
library is probably good enough for most.
Unless you really care about last played date or personal ratings for
tracks then you can consider much of the LMS database as fairly easy to
recreate.
The time comes in configuring plugins or special audio hardware - but
those are things that are changed infrequently so a backup can be done
easily enough.

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] A server for us

2020-05-14 Thread cfuttrup

With Synology officially discarding support, I wonder what happens when
my DiskStation needs replacement?

Could a Raspberry Pi server (not player) loaded with LMS be designed and
built?
Would it be posible to make something Tiny Core / piCore based, but not
a player, maybe name it piCoreServer?

Since LMS requires a nice shutdown, a hardware 'requirement' (or at
least strong recommendation)
could be to attach a UPS with a small battery. The UPS must support
'soft' shutdown, such that
the LMS database survives. Something with just one minute of battery
operation is required.

I like PiJuice a lot, but is this product on the way out of the market?
PiJuice is maybe a bit expensive, and replaced by lower-cost
alternatives?
Let me know if you have any information about this.
The idea of a product that doesn't require any battery service, e.g.
with supercaps, sounds attractive to me.

Other than that, this LMS server solution requires some sort of storage
support, either with a good
size USB SSD - is it available in a pen format? Reliability is king. Can
we support two
disks (a primary and a backup w. failover that is normally inactive
during reading and therefore with less wear)?
If yes, maybe lower cost flash drives are OK.

On the server side, it should be easy to administrate your music
collection and rescan.
Preferably easy to upload music, maybe easy to delete certain music, if
unwanted, etc.

Anything else server-side, which is desirable? Maintenance options? Easy
software updates?

We don't need an audio card, since this is a server that I'll stove
away.

Is any sort of display and/or loudspeaker (for acoustic information)
required or desired?

/Claus
