Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Which streaming service working 100% HQ

2019-03-22 Thread jayce996

thanks for your inputs!
I'm currently testing Tidal in parallel to Spotify at home and at the
office, i clearly hear differences with the FLAC files. but then comes
another aspect that i didn't though before, is the user interface and
more particularly the random mix or the available playlists, where in
TIDAL i'm surpirse to almost never heart something that i know and be
poluted by some R/Rap music all the time ...anyway that's another
discussion that does not need to be treated here.

I've not yet started the creation of a new SD card with just
Squeezeelite and compare it with my existing MoOde OS. that is for this
week-end :-)

Among my own files, I can usually hear a difference between a 320kbps
mp3 or FLAC file. But once they are streams, it gets much fuzzier.
Perhaps it is my network or another software issue, but the 320 stream
still sound like 320 files while FLAC streams also sound like 320's and
even worse sometimes. My experience with FLAC streams has been limited
to Tidal and RadioParadise, so it is hardly representative, and it is
more likely representing the services as I know FLAC files sound
better.

For instance, the 320 AAC stream on RadioParadise sounds as good as
their FLAC files to my ears through my system.

Ultimately, I think there are a lot of variables. I run an optical line
from my squeezebox to my primary receiver, which is where I focus my
comparisons. In my case, the receiver is impacting quality (I am not an
audiophile so I don't try to quantify how), my internet bandwidth could
have an impact, server, etc. This is why I think it really is going to
depend on a users equipment and setup. With all my other devices, I
can't even differentiate mp3 from FLAC as the quality is generally lower
on account of the speakers and listening environment.

I have tried most of the FLAC services and I have stuck with Spotify
largely because of the integration that Michael has achieved with Spotty
combined with DSTM/Lastmix and the recently introduced Random Seed (my
request) options. I don't use Spotty's "Connect mode" I still manage
everything via LMS (iPeng & Material).

Like others if I want high-res I buy the CD or a FLAC download. I have
got good kit and I can detect the difference between 320kbps mp3/ogg and
FLAC but I can't hear a difference between 16/44.1 FLAC and 24/96 FLAC
or higher.

I have recently started using Radio Paradise in FLAC and I think the SQ
there is very good but that is of course a high end Internet Radio
station rather than a streaming service.

To the original question and streaming service, I honestly think it is
going to depend on the audio equipment you are listening on. You just
might have to try it out to see what sounds best.

I tried Tidal once, and it did not sound better than the Spotify stream
I was getting. The fault was probably on my end, and I did work through
things and verified I was getting the FLAC stream, but to my ears I
heard the following:

1. Spotify sounded better than the Tidal stream for the same tracks
2. My own FLAC files sounded better than the Tidal streams.

There are many reasons why that may happen. I stuck with Spotify.
Honestly, when I get to a point where I care about the quality enough, I
buy the recording (either CD or FLAC), so I don't feel like I am missing
much. There may be other considerations outside sound quality that
could matter, but I am not addressing that.

If you like to use plugins which are available via mysb.com only, yes.
The Deezer plugin via mysb.com streams only mp3 quality. If you like to
have Deezer Hifi and flac quality you need to use Ickstream.
Unfortunatly the Deezer plugin on Ickstream does not have many features
implemented that are available via the official plugin on mysb.com, it
would be really great to have the official Deezer plugin also stream
flac.

Ciao,

that was very interesting information, thank you very much.
in this case, this means that TIDAL is not a good option.
So at the end what remains? Deezer premium & Qobuz Sublime, that's all?
Is Qobuz be the only solution?

All providers offer free trials, one is generally asked to subscribe to
commence the trial.

What I have done in the past, is just wait a day or so after the start
of the subscription and then cancel it. The subscription continues to
run until the end of the trial period.

With LMS one can have several providers available at the same time.

Enjoy :)

You won't get the full MQA unless you have a dac that completes all the
unfolding (I can't remember if that is available via LMS).

MQA = Most Questionable Audio Format of all time

Why does one pack an already highres audio file into another container
with a necessary conversion step (See
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Quality_Authenticated#Codec_description:
"MQA encoding is lossy; it hierarchically compresses the relatively
little energy in the higher frequency bands into data streams that are
embedded in the lower frequency bands using proprietary dithering
techniques.")? That is nothing but nonsense.
MQA was only developed to keep the sole control over the
distribution-channels. Instead of simply selling the original
uncorrupted wav-, flac-, DSD-files etc. which the mastering-facilities
put out, the "inventors" try to establish another proprietary file
format and try to convince the hardware-manufacturers to get the
buzzword out. The manufacturers - at least those uncritical - are
thankful to have the next marketing hype, helping them to make new money
with their next-gen devices.

It is a disastrous alliance for the quality of music. Even 44.1 kHz/16
Bit stores all relevant information to get really good sounding results
from your devices. But they not even want to sell these. Because then
there is no reason for a new funky-sounding format to make money of.

i did update my post in the meatime you did your reply with the
following providers: Deezer Premium, Tidal HIFI, Qobuz SUBLIME
but my question is more related to the support of such services and
sound quality with LMS knwoing that for example some people highlighted
the fact that Tidal MQA is not supported with TIDAL plugin in LMS for
example.
So that is the information i'm looking for: which service is supported
to its max with all functions.
