Poncet Platform: was Re: Equation of Time

2007-06-10 Thread Peter Mayer

Hi,

I've tried to send a couple of small jpgs of my crude Poncet
Platform, but they've been blocked by the server, too large. I may have
to try in stages.

best wishes,

Peter

RE: sundial in the Company's Garden in Cape Town

2007-06-10 Thread Keith Christian

Hello, Willy

As Roderick Wall suggested, it COULD simply be that this is
just intended to 'hide' any mistakes by the original maker.

However, another possibility is that those numerals for the
hours 5, 6, 7 and 8 were deliberately made that way - so as
to make it obvious that these are the morning (a.m.) hours.

Perhaps each overlaid 'upside-down V' is to be viewed as an
upward-arrow - and maybe representing the sunRISE hours ?

Keith Christian.

Hi Peter,

One more image, of the pivot alone?? Can't quite make it out in that second
view.? The rest is quite clear.

Question: Is it still a Poncet platform if it utilizes a cylindrical surface
rather than a planar surface?

Best,
John B

Hi Peter,

Your small jpgs came through fine. There seem to be a number of Poncet
patents with curved surfaces, to answer other questions. This embodyment
seems sturdier and less likely to shift. It appears to be an indoor dial,
through a south window, yes. It looks really good! I wish I had a south
window.

Nice to hear from you again.

Edley.

Re: Poncet Platform

2007-06-10 Thread Peter Mayer

Dear John,

I may have to take another photo. In my platform, the gnomon rod
extends through the base and is the pivot as well.
In principle a circular section of a cone should work. I'll also
post a schematic drawing of my platform.

best wishes,

Peter

Re: Poncet Platform: was Re: Equation of Time

2007-06-10 Thread Peter Mayer

Dear Edley,
My version is a Gee platform, named for Alan Gee which uses a
circular section. I rested the section in the piece of plywood I'd cut
it from, resting it, as perhaps you can see, on two little teflon
furniture glides.
Oh! And since I'm in Oz, the door (and deck) face north. (Perhaps
if you can see the numbers on the dial you'll see they run from right to
left!).

best wishes,

Peter

Re: Poncet Platform

2007-06-10 Thread Roger Bailey
Hi Peter,

Thanks for the pictures. This last one pdf sketch demonstrates the rotation
on the polar axis quite well.

Besides the important new (ok renovated) ideas , this thread has
demonstrated a couple of points to me.
1. A good question:. A newbie asking a simple good question has provided a
wealth of interesting responses. Yes, this more that he probably wanted to
know but we all benefited by the exchange.
2. Size Discipline: Many of us have been frustrated in sharing our ideas
because of the size filter on this mailing list. your last, but important,
drawing was just a trivial 1.48 kb. His excellent pictures were about 15
kb. The technology is available to produce small files. I am pleased that
you met the challenge and communicated these concepts effectively. I may
grumble in the future but thanks Peter, you have demonstrated that it can be
done.

Roger Bailey

Southern/Northern exposure

2007-06-10 Thread Edley McKnight
Dear Dialers,

I keep making the assumption that a nice room that gets a lot of sun mid day
has a Southern Exposure. Is there a short generic term for a surface that
faces the sun at noon for most of the year? I guess it only happens above or
below 23.5 degrees away from the equator. Nowthern, Sourthern
Exposure??? Hmm? at the equator with windows on the north and south,
would one have an Ozzy sundial and the other have a Euro sundial part of
the year? That is, numbers running the opposite direction. Since this is a
world wide forum there should be a generic term that is acceptable.

Thanks!

Edley McKnight
