Last week, my town put up new signs for alternate side of the street parking rules (officially it say tow-away zone )-: rant This is aka alternate-side taxation without representation /rant. Separate from the political fight, I thought of an opportunity for a technical solution to this problem. I could build a table of legal parking spaces, and set my FreeRunner to tell me when I park, that this space is only legal until 8:30 am There is a web site that has logic like this for NYC. You point at a street, and it shows green for the spots that are legal the longest. In practical terms, it would be an integration when my home network is detected, it will know to look at gps figures to check the parking regulation table. Then, in theory, it could Text-to Voice. Seth, just keep in mind, this is only legal until 8:30 am. Other possibilities... If the phone remembers where I parked have an alarm at 8:22 say Move the car!. Does anyone know about the assembly and possibility of repairing FR? I had it in a pocket all day yesterday, and I see a bad crack on the screen. (Getting a cover or holster was on my list :-) It booted, I clicked something, and it hung while trying to start the app. (You might say, Well, it was doing that before...:-) (I think that's because of the bug in the charge cycle. It hits 100%, then stops charging, and never detects the trailing edge of the sufficiently charged sensor. I can try to re-flash it at home, I work in an almost Linux-free environment. Re: 8Gb SD card and sd_max_clk
A picture like that? http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Image:FR_SIM_SD_open.jpg Thanks. I needed a bit more...like Another trick is Joerg's sticky tape mod. See http://people.openmoko.org/joerg/sdcard-handle/ for photos. Best of all... A trick i use is removing the SIM and insert it between the sd and the plastic and then use it as a lever. Good tip! Done. I just need to remember where I put the new one My nails are not so long to pop the thing out. Just the week I decided to groom... Re: 8Gb SD card and sd_max_clk
Sorry to pop up with a silly question, but is there a trick for getting the SD out? I tried, and my colleague tried, and we are at a loss. I looked at online docs and they didn't help. Even simply a picture with it open would help, as I can't remember what it looked like. Thanks ___ support mailing list support@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/support
It's a PHONE
I have been a little worried about the FreeRunner, since it couldn't maintain a USB network connection (resolved by disabling Suspend), and it couldn't recognize my ATT SIM card... But on Friday, I got a TMobile SIM and a phone number (and by Divine Providence it ends in 0771, love that number! :-) And it makes and takes phone calls. Sound isn't perfect, but I have heard a lot of people talking about these issues, so I have confidence. Now I'll go back to developing an application that might greatly benefit from FR... I'm converting a camry to run on batteries... and it's valuable to have real-time diagnostics like from a Linux PC. Thank you all who have been working on this. Bench Test FreeRunner
Hi, I have had the Freerunner a while, have had fun putting on different distros, FDOM, and OM 2008.9, but have not been able to do anything productive with it yet. ($400 soduko game :-). I have some ideas that the FreeRunner (or, Commodity Linux GPS phone) could be used for, but it helps to start with a working one. opkg update fails with Om2008.9 as shipped. (output below) Is there a known working configuration for opkg or ipkg? Are there bench tests I can run to confirm whether the hardware is working? Without updating, should GPS tests with any of these distros give me at least Latitude and Longitude? Thanks. Re: Bench Test FreeRunner
Just an update (or upgrade :-) on the status - opkg update gives lots of errors, but never says explicitly that none of them are fatal. opkg upgrade was failingand the network connection was being dropped.Or likely, BECAUSE the network connection was being dropped. And why was that? because the screen timed outsuspended. Is there a bug in that regard? Changing Settings/Suspend to off helped. Now I can try again with something else, eg, adding tango, or even FDOM Thanks Seth ___ support mailing list support@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/support

FDOM and network stability and Dialer
I used neotool on Ubuntu 8.04 to install FDOM. Tried USB networking. It succeeds for the first round of ping -c 2, then doesn't work any longer. I hate to point fingers, but are there known diagnostics I can run to check the fulll physical path? my USB port, the cable, the FR USB port. ...And in other news, Dialer can't see my SIM card. That might be an ATT issue, as I don't know if my old phone is GSM. Time to go get an extra SIM. Re: tango
Joel, Thanks for all the details. So to flash, download a new image (like http://downloads.openmoko.org/releases/Om2008.8-update/ - you need 'gta02' versions of rootfs and uImage and rootfs may be .jffs2 or .jffs2.summary) and fire up Neotool. Tell it to flash, select the files, and it will tell you to prepare the Freerunner. At this point the FR should be off, and plugged into USB. Hold down 'aux', press and hold power now until the NOR boot menu appears, then release both. Click 'start' (or whatever the button is) in neotool and it will start flashing. rootfs will take quite some time. Once you've confirmed it finished correctly and boots the FR, consider also flashing the latest uboot bootloader - same procedure. ___ support mailing list support@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/support

I wrote: Greetings. I have had my FreeRunner a couple of days, I would appreciate some tips on navigating (on it...and with it :-). Check out 2008.9 or even FDOM. FDOM will give you a faster impression of whats possible with your freerunner but it isn't an official Openmoko distribution. and my colleague agreed, saying lots of things are fixed (like usb networking :-) so, how to upgrade if usb networking is unstable? Now, a few days later, it won't stay up long enough to... run neotool. From the time I bring up networking, until I click over to another window, it now fails. (I am on Ubuntu, 8.04) Do I need to just get an SD card reader to copy the new image on? - will that help me? (will I need a bigger SD card? :-). I don't suppose the FR will allow me to use the SD from the host without bringing up USB networking? related - I saw a page about buying or building a USB crossover cable, so the FR could be a host. Could I then upgrade from a USB stick? Thanks Seth ___ support mailing list support@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/support
tango
Greetings. I have had my FreeRunner a couple of days, I would appreciate some tips on navigating (on it...and with it :-). I found my way to usb networking, so I can ssh to [EMAIL PROTECTED] without password (from my home Ubuntu pc, which is secure ;-) instructions for tango appear obsolete, since they mention gpsd and other docs list gpsd as obsolete. In any case, the first step seems to be opkg update which fails (small bug, it reports failure to verify signature, when the failure was finding the tarball) It looks like the download tree on openmoko.org has moved, but I'm not sure exactly where to. Just changing buildhost to downloads didn't do the trick. uname says: Linux om-gta02 2.6.24 #1 PREEMPT Thu Apr 24 08:23:36 CST 2008 armv4tl unknown [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/opkg# cat all-feed.conf src/gz daily-all http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily-feed/all (downloads.openmoko.org/daily-feed does not exist) Any help is appreciated. Hopefully a solution to my questions doesn't require deciding what I want to do with itbecause I want to do everything with it. (make calls, manage servers at work, find my way home :-) Thanks Seth PS usb networking from ubuntu to Freerunner keeps getting dropped. I'm suspecting freerunner, but it could be either. bringing up usb0 again fixes it. ___ support mailing list support@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/support
