Re: Ongoing support for Yahoo protocol?

2016-08-19 Thread Adrian Ball

Hi Eion,
Excellent! Thanks for that. It looks like the new
protocol is a bit short on functionality so far
though. No buddy list or buddy status will be
painful, the way I use Messenger. :-( Might have
to look for a new protocol to use. Even Google Talk is dead now too!

Cheers,
Adrian.

The shutdown is supposedly going to be complete
at the end of August 2016 (less than a couple of weeks away!).

Will Pidgin continue to support Yahoo? I have no
idea if the protocol itself will change, but I
can tell you that messages sent from their new client don't appear in Pidgin.

In general I'm with you, David. The nasty consequence of not having
OpenSource implementations of (reversed engineered) proprietary
protocols is that all, even willing people, are encouraged to buy mobile
device with iOs, Android, ... with all such crappy apps, instead
of Ubuntu mobile devices, or even worth, use WhatsApe or however this
is named.

Yahoo don't want you to use a 3rd party client, they want to be able to
throw advertising at you in their own proprietary application. I don't
know if there is enough public information about the new Yahoo
Messenger to attempt to implement a Pidgin plugin to interwork with it.

You need to provide a detailed technical specification of the new
protocol, and convince some programmer to implement it. I suspect that
Yahoo is unwilling to release such a specification, so you will have to
reverse engineer it. Also, I think you will find that most programmers
take the view that chasing proprietary protocols is a waste of time and
just encourages companies to not follow open standards

Can I use Yahoo Messenger with 3rd party messaging apps?
No. The new version of Yahoo Messenger doesn't work with 3rd party clients,
like Trillian and Pidgin.

Any way to find a way to make this work?

Please advise. - Tom Burgess
