Exactly like? So it's a mailing list manager...

I use the email interface to groups.io (I'd prefer not to have to, but
it is what it is) and I find that email to the groups.io group usually
have broken references headers and the threading is broken because of
this. I also see lots of replies to list and to me as well and it
drives me crazy.

I don't think I have any experience of Discourse.

Mailing lists have worked for me for way over 35 years so I am
resistant to change.

Looking here:

https://pidgin.im/help/windows/#can-i-run-pidgin-on-windows-98-windows-me-windows-2000-windows-xp-or-windows-vista

I see:

Can I run Pidgin on Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP,
or Windows Vista?

It is possible using old versions of Pidgin and GTK, but we do not
support this. Don’t do it.

This page is from 2019, so it seems that for at least that long new
Pidgin versions have not been supported on XP.

Pidgin is a client which can use various messaging services, if you
cannot log in then you need to check the service in question. Pidgin
the project does not run any such service so it doesn't have accounts,
this is a peer support mailing list and we are also simply users of the
software.

A little more information could help us to point you in the right
direction. If you can tell us which service you use someone here may be
able to suggest some action to find out what the problem is and
potentially how to correct the error.

You are trying to use a service that was removed from Pidgin with the
previous release, 2.12.0, since it could no longer be supported.

Yahoo Messenger itself is being discontinued from July 17th this year,

I recall that at one time there was a Windows plugin, or dll, that gave
some Windows-specific options including one that allowed for automatic
Pidgin start up on Windows login or startup. It may have been an
official plugin, but I have not used Pidgin on Windows for some time

You should also be able to use Pidgin as a Hangouts client, there is a

You should view the certificate and that should tell you who created it
and when. If you have an internal server then I suspect that the
certificate was created with a certain lifespan and now someone needs
to create a new certificate that expires in 5 or so years.

I don't think it can be down to MS, the certificate is for an internal
machine or domain so it's probably something from some years ago and
it's been forgotten about.

Yahoo don't want you to use a 3rd party client, they want to be able to

Karl, it pains me to say this, but one reason you seem unable to
configure Pidgin correctly is because Oracle's internal IT department
seem to be deficient and do not provide you or your co-worksers adequate
support.

Oracle seems to have decided to use Pidgin internally but has not
bothered to alter the installation so that the help links point to
corporate resources inside Oracle instead of causing users to
constantly be sending emails to the peer support list provided by
ordinary Pidgin users who have no greater power than the ability to
read and type replies to this list.

Please do us a favour, speak to whoever is in charger of messaging
applications within Oracle and ask them why, despite several years
passing, they have still been unable to complete the simple task of
supporting their users.

While you're at it, you could also ask them why your display is
misbehaving.

I wish you luck.

On this mailing list, which is a peer support list for Pidgin (which is

Please would you contact the Oracle IT department and ask them to

I did but couldn't see any reference to my problem

Essentially MS have revoked access to an old MSN Messenger version from
roughly 6 years ago, Pidgin was identifying as this version. It's a
very recent problem, I assume that Pidgin will move to identifying as a
newer MSN Messenger or Live Messenger version, that will last until MS
decide to remove access to that.

The long term future for MSN is to move to Skype clients which is
clearly not an option for continued Pidgin usage.

Indeed. What usually breaks it for me is when the distro has changed

the package I want to rebuild is looking in the wrong .pc file for
which headers to use when building. It usually takes a while for some
maintainers to catch up.

you should have some otr.string files, like otr.fingerprints etc.

If you copy these to your home .purple directory, and maybe other

then it should work OK.

Of course you need to install and enable the OTR plugin.

Well you don't have a pidgin account, but you probably do have an IM
service's account which you access using Pidgin.

Please tell us more about which service you use and perhaps show us the
contents of the debug window (accessed via the Help menu) with any

Can you tell us which IRC server you're trying to connect to and
provide the contents of the debug window after your connection attempt
has timed out. Make sure you don't post anything sensitive, like

Can you connect with a different IRC client? Are you behind a

All these things are needed for us to come up with any sensible advice.

If you are using Windows, then the plugins are .dll files which should
be placed in the plugins subdirectory of where Pidgin is installed,
that's probably in C:\Program Files\Pidgin. Note that the most recent
plugin pack also has some files that need to go in a subdirectory
called bin again in the above directory.

If you need further help then some debug window output would be
helpful, I don't know about the IRC case but without knowing about the
server you will find it difficult to connect. Others have Facebook chat
working, so it's probably a settings problem.

With the Windows Pidgin versions, there should be a setting in the

The current version of Pidgin is 2.10.1, so your version is now very
much out of date. I think that at least one of the fixes since 2.7.1 is
to do with the type of problem you are suffering so the first thing to
do is to download and install the updated version.

Note that the new installer allows the selection of dictionaries and
internationalisation support by selecting any languages you require
during the installation, it's also worth selecting the debug symbols
option as this is helpful in the event that you need to report a crash.

then selecting the Spanish keyboard should then enable accented

If you want spell checking you can add the languages you want via the
