Pidgin 2.10.11 released
No security fixes this time around, if you can believe it. We fixed logging in to MSN accounts. This was due to a server change by MSN, and it's quite possible it will break again--not really under our control. Also a few SSL-related fixes that mostly affect signing into XMPP servers that have self-signed SSL certificates. Re: Opening received files
Hi Casey. I think this is a side-effect of a change in Pidgin 2.10.8: When clicking file:// links, show the file in Explorer rather than attempting to run the file. This reduces the chances of a user clicking on a link and mistakenly running a malicious file. (Originally discovered by James Burton, Insomnia Security. Rediscovered by Yves Younan of Sourcefire VRT.) (CVE-2013-6486) We WANT that behavior when clicking a link in an IM window. We don't have a strong opinion about it when clicking to open a file that you received via file transfer. Probably clicking the file name in the IM window should open the file manager, for consistency with clicking a URL in the IM window. I think we'd accept a patch to change the behavior when opening the file via the file transfer window. When I delete a user from the XMPP server, the user remains on all the users Pidgin buddy lists. Is there a way to refresh the buddy list periodically? For XMPP the master copy of each user's roster lives on the server. Pidgin fetches an updated copy of the roster each time the user signs in. In addition, if user A and has user B in their roster and you delete user B, I believe the XMPP server can optionally send an XMPP message to user A indicating that user B has been removed from the roster. So basically it's up to the XMPP server to manage this situation. Deleting a user from the server may or may not clean up rosters that contain that user. I'm not sure what happens if user A is on a different domain than user B. User B's XMPP server would need to tell user A's XMPP server that user B has been deleted. I don't know whether there is an XMPP spec that defines how to do this. Also, I have users in different groups. The issue there is that in one group they appear online and in another they are offline. It is the same user account though. That sounds like a bug to me. Not sure if the bug would be in the server or the client. My inclination would be to blame Pidgin, since I feel like Openfire tends to be a pretty good server. Also, some users, who are logged in, appear as offline to some and online to others. Is this just a bug or a config issue? Not sure. Adding someone to your roster doesn't necessarily mean you're able to see that person--they must approve your presence request. Maybe the person approved one presence request but denied or ignored another? You could try removing and re-adding the person from your roster. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? And old versions are less secure than the current version. This story sounds weird. I'm imagining three scenarios: 1. This is a corporate computer managed by a central IT team at your company. They chose to upgrade Pidgin on your computer. No idea what happened to your settings. 2. You somehow have or had multiple versions of Pidgin installed at the same time. Possibly an official build downloaded from a link off of https://pidgin.im/ and possibly an unofficial or portable build from elsewhere. Maybe you were previously running one of them and you've now started running a different one. 3. You don't have an official build installed at all, just an unofficial one from elsewhere. Maybe the unofficial one even includes some sort of auto-updater. In case #1, I suggest talking to your IT people. In cases #2 and #3, I suggest: 1. Uninstall Pidgin using Windows' standard add/remove software dialog. 2. Search your computer for any/all .purple directories. Find the one you care about and put it in the standard location (https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#Whereismy.purpledirectory). 3. I've seen this argument before and I don't think it holds water. At least to my knowledge, nothing in Apple's (current) agreements prohibit developers from distributing source code, and as long as source code (and possibly unsigned binaries) are distributed without further restrictions, you can remain in compliance even if a third party chooses to distribute signed copies. (In other words, I could digitally sign pidgin and run it in my environment that requires my trusted digital signature on all executables, if I wanted -- It wouldn't run in your similarly-configured environment which requires your digital signature, but you'd be free to build from source and sign it yourself or disable your OS's signature verification so that you can run it yourself) As always, IANAL, and if you take legal advice from a mailing list, you've got your money's worth and not a penny more. Either way, there are various AppStore entries that contain open source products with various licenses, both BSD and GPL flavours. At least I'm remembering the issues VLC had maybe two years ago. Hi Cassandra. Pidgin only sends auto replies on IM protocols that have historically featured auto replies (and the auto-reply preference only pertains to those IM protocols). Specifically, only AIM and Zephyr. This is because there's no way to indicate that a message is an auto-reply on other IM protocols, and they tend to confuse people. I think the purple plugin pack might include a plugin that adds auto reply functionality for other protocols. We could probably narrow the problem down further by checking if this functionality still exists in official AIM and ICQ clients and whether it still works there. I tried using their own Web-ICQ and it still didn't work. The symptoms were different. Their Web-ICQ told me that my contacts were offline (which is untrue, they were cellphone contacts, and their cellphones were turned on, so they were not offline). On the other hand, pidgin (and also empathy, I tried that too) tells me that my contacts are online, which is true, and it allows me to IM them, but the IM messages are never texted to their cellphones, they just disappear. I think the online/offline status is not important. AOL, AIM, ICQ, Web-ICQ, Pidgin, etc. have no idea whether the person's phone is on or off. That functionality isn't supported by the SMS network. Moreover, SMS is a store-and-forward system, where if a phone is off or disconnected then text messages destined for that phone will be stored until the next time the phone connects to the mobile network. Pidgin ALWAYS shows +NNN contacts as online to make it easier to send messages to them. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Re: URGENT: Please remove links to comparehomeloans.com.au
First an explanation of what happened, since it might not be clear to Adam Smoulders/Comparehomeloans.com.au: - The URL you pasted is a link to the archive of our tracker mailing list - Our bug tracking system sends emails to this mailing list for all new bug reports and for any changes to bug reports - In May 2011 someone created an item in our bug tracker that contained a bunch of spammy text about home loans with links to your web site - We deleted the item from our bug tracker, but the archived email remains To be fair to the poster, it's possible the spam wasn't generated _directly_ by him or his web site. It's possible someone affiliated with this website paid some sort of shady SEO company to boost your search result ranking for a low low fee! I think this is more likely. I think this sort of thing probably happens frequently and I think it isn't always obvious that the shady SEO company is spamming the hell out of the Internet. Lesson: If you're running a web site, be extremely skeptical about working with SEO companies. Ask them specifically what they're doing. Good SEO involves improving your website by making it friendlier to search engines (and users) and adding better content. You can raise awareness by placing targeted advertisements in reputable ad networks or by pitching your product to relevant press. Bad SEO involves paying someone to plaster links to your website all over the Internet. So while I despise spam and spammers, I think it's a little unfair to vilify Adam and comparehomeloans.com.au so quickly. I mostly just want to raise awareness--I don't care enough to bother removing the spam from our mailing list archive. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? We (the Pidgin dev team) generally only approve new translators at Transifex if: 1. The applicant is the same person who is already listed as the translator in Pidgin's help dialog. or 2. We don't have an active translator for the given project. For adding additional translators to an existing translation team, we generally leave this decision up to the translators (that's you!). If you no longer wish to translate Pidgin then you could approve his Transifex request and let him take over. If you still want to translate and are ok with having someone else help you, feel free to approve his request. In either case let me know and I'll update Pidgin's help dialog appropriately. If you'd prefer not to have help, please let me and Hossein know (and I'd be curious to hear the reasons). Re: Problem with 'NOT AUTHORIZED'
Hi Dursh. I would be surprised if this problem was somehow related to SSL/TLS certificates. Those types of problems usually surface as unable to connect errors, or the server you connected to is using an untrusted certificate. Whereas the problem you described sounds more like you connected fine, but for some reason the MSN servers think that these people have not granted you permission to see their availability status. Two suggestions: 1. Try removing one of the people from your buddy list, then check Tools--Privacy and make sure the person is not listed in the Block only the users below list. Then re-add the person (you'll probably need to wait for them to approve your request again). 2. Try signing in with an official MSN program. Possibly https://messenger.live.com/. It's possible this alone could fix the problem. If not, it might at least provide insight into what's happening. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? If you want to write a news story about us, feel free to use our stylized Pidgin text and the pigeon mascot. It is not ok to use the branding to represent something else. Pidgin on your computer isn't able to establish a connection to alt1.xmpp.l.google.com:5222, but it looks like it isn't able to. Possible reasons: - A local software firewall is running on your computer and blocking outgoing connections to those hosts on port 5222. - A piece of network equipment between your computer and Google is blocking connections to those hosts on port 5222. This could be a company firewall or content filtering device, for example. - Your computer, home router, or ISP has broken support for IPv6. This seems like the most likely cause, to me. I don't know how long this has been happening, but the hostnames used for Google Talk return IPv6 records when doing a DNS query for records. Some (most?) operating systems query for records by default if your computer has an IPv6 address. I'm guessing either Google started returning records or your computer started querying for them or your ISP started giving you an IPv6 address. I feel like there should be messages earlier in the debug log that print the IP address that Pidgin is trying to connect to. You could try telneting to that on port 5222 from the command line and see if it works. You could also try doing an A looking for xmpp.l.google.com and telnet to that on port 5222 and see if that works. To fix this, you could probably just turn off IPv6 somewhere in your computer's network settings. This is unlikely to have harmful side effects, at least for the next year. If this is indeed the cause, you should also contact an engineer at your ISP (not typical front line customer service, because they're usually clueless) and let them know you're having problems. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Re: Pidgin Requirements
I think the answer is mostly yes. I don't see XEP-0068 or XEP-0082 listed at https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/SupportedXEPs , but that doesn't necessarily mean they aren't supported. Additionally, just because something IS listed doesn't mean Pidgin provides 100% of the functionality from that XEP. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Hi James. Does that error come from the installer? Or from Pidgin itself? If the latter, it sounds like the installer completed successfully? It looks like Connect Port is set to 80 and Connect Server is set to port80.olark.com. Is that correct? Have you tried leaving those two fields empty (on the Advanced tab of the account)? Or are you using those settings because you're behind some sort of restrictive firewall? Short answer: This should be fine--go for it. Longer answer: Most of our files, including that icon, are licensed under the GPL. So please try to adhere to the terms of the GPL (for the purposes of the license, pidgin.png is both the source and compiled work). Also I guess we possess the trademark for things that make up the Pidgin brand.
