Do you btw ever use the pill button in the top right corner of the

 /Stefan

Personally, I don't. However, if the goal is to keep the theme
consistent with skins from other Mac apps, it should be retained.

I was curious because the functionality is almost the same as a
toolbargrippie.

Apple's Human Interface Guidelines refer to the pill as the Toolbar
Control. To be fully compliant, this button is a show/hide control for
toolbars that are incorporated into the TOP of the window frame only and
be accompanied by a View/Show(Hide) Toolbar menu command plus a keyboard
equivalent of cm+opt+T.

Many apps take liberties with this guideline. For example, Safari
doesn't have one although there is the menu equivalent View/Show(Hide)
Toolbar command and a keyboard equivalent of cmd+|. Opera doesn't have
one but has a View/Main Bar command but no keyboard equivlent. iTunes
has neither.

The Finder is compliant with all three. In addition there is an escape
for toolbar customization when the pill is clicked with option+cmd keys.

Acrobat Professional goes to the extreme and uses it for global
show/hide control of all active toolbars plus a View/Toolbars/Show(Hide)
Toolbars menu command and a keyboard equivalent of F8. As all Acrobat
menus are drag-and-drop, there are individual toolbar grippies.
Compliance in this implementation depends on whether one considers
drag-and-drop toolbars as part of the top window frame when parked
there. There's no mention of drag-and-drop menus in the HIG.

http://mozillalinks.org/wp/2009/07/vacuum-your-firefox-databases-for-better-performance/

Since Firefox 3.0, bookmarks, history and most storage is kept in
SQLite databases. Also, the default history time span was raised from 9
to 90 days as it became more discoverable and useful thanks to the
awesome bar, so depending on your browsing habits it could represent
some pretty large databases.

As any other database, SQLite databases become fragmented over time and
empty spaces appear all around. But, since there are no managing
processes checking and optimizing the database, these factors eventually
result in a performance hit. So, a good way to improve startup and some
other bookmarks and history related tasks is to defragment and trim
unused space from these databases.

First, we have to be clear about which grippies we are referring to.

If we are talking about the grippies for the toolbars, address area,
etc. at the left side of the window that art was referring to in the OP
[1], IMHO on Mac OS X that function is better served by the pill button
in the top right corner of the window.

If we are talking about the grippies on the vertical and horizontal

appearance but only the old grippies function.
I've already written on this NG what I think about this issue.

Copy and paste from this post [2]:
I've just spent some time looking at the referenced document and I
think I found the relevant information in the Controls - View Controls
- Split Views section.
Yes, the Apple HIG (http://tinyurl.com/ybnp85b) state that an
horizontal splitter cannot have grippies because the pointer should be
the same all over the splitter bar, but I didn't find anything
suggesting that an horizontal splitter cannot be double clicked to
automatically move it to the bottom of the window. In the same way, a
splitter bar at the bottom of the window could be double clicked to
restore it to its last position. In fact, this is the precise behavior
of the horizontal splitter bar that delimits the thread pane and message
pane in Apple Mail.app 3.6 (936), that is the last Mail.app version in
Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard. So, IMHO, the old behavior can be restored
without violating the Apple HIG. If you and/or Philip Chee don't agree,
please point us to the specific section of the specs that confirms your
thesis.

P.S.
By the way, are you sure that the new theme's splitters are either
zero-width (1 pixel wide) or “thick” (9 pixels wide)?
If not, *this* violates the Apple HIG.

P.P.S.
I've just noticed that the vertical splitter between the addresses and
attachments areas in the message composition window is undoubtedly too
wide to conform to the specs.

I'd even like it if Apple did that...

Well, Apple DOES that!

Seeking Migration Guidance

2010-01-02 Thread HenriK
Because of a need to install a replacement hard drive on my wife's 966
mHz P3 PC, I am thinking of moving her from SM v.1.1.14 to SM v.2.01.

1) Is there a good discussion around somewhere addressing the pros and
cons of SM v.1.1.18 vs SM v.2.01?

2) What do I need particularly save in such a move to either SM v.1.1.18
or SM v.2.01? I have located the existing SM v.1.1.14 mail files and
copied them. Or, should I simply save the entire profile folder to a
CD-R and copy it into the equivalent place in either SM v.1.1.18 or SM
v.2.01? Where do I find the SM v.1.1.14 address book and bookmark files?

3) I have a dim recollection that there are migration issues when moving
from SM 1.x to SM 2.x. Is there a good tutorial on what these are if,
in fact, there such migration issues?

Thanks, in advance, for any and all assistance. Now, into my 70s, I
find keeping up with all the things one needs to know a bit harder than
it used to be.

Theme support in Seamonkey 2.x

Hello

I'm about to upgrade to Seamonkey 2.0.1 and currently in Seamonkey 1.1.8
I use a theme named Really Modern made by a guy named Chris Cunningham
(http://blondechris.com/really-modern/).

I do like this theme very much and would like to keep it in Seamonkey

this theme is based on a JAR file, what required an old extension named

in order to be installed.

Does Seamonker 2.0.1 support this JAR-based themes ? Or is there another
way to

install it ?

I don't have any problem with opening a new window and losing focus.
Are you sure that you are responding to the right post?

Thanks again!

Funny you mention this, Phillip.as I was reading your reply, I was
thinking 'Should I be using the Windows key in Linux.'

I suppose, if I really wanted to, I could map the Windows key to do
something useful.

The Windows key on a Windows computer becaoes the Option key when used
on a Mac, if it compatible. I don't really know what it does on Linux.

this theme is based on a JAR file, what required an old extension named

Does Seamonker 2.0.1 support this JAR-based themes ? Or is there another
way to
install it ?

Thanks in advance,

Click on the Suiterunner Version link at the page you reference. That
installs on SM 2.0.1.

Re: Seeking Migration Guidance

Is there a good tutorial on what these are if, in
fact, there such migration issues?

Thanks, in advance, for any and all assistance. Now, into my 70s, I find
keeping up with all the things one needs to know a bit harder than it
used to be.

Henrik, I'm part way through migrating myself from a Desktop computer to
a Laptop, so chose this time to migrate From SM 1.1.18 to SM 2.0.0.

All I did was install SN 2.0.0 on the Laptop, then copy the
addressbook.html (website addresses) and abook.mab (email addresses)
files from the old profile to the new.

Yet to actually copy over all my old mail files, but expect no problems
as long as I remember to rename the old mail folders to oldinbox,
oldsent, etc and copy them onto the new computer at the same location as
the new inbox, sent, etc. There is no need to rename and copy the
inbox.msf, etc, files, s these are rebuilt on the new computer when
you select the renamed oldinbox, etc.

Check that, the theme needs some serious updating in Mail/News to be
functional.

Any way to put an arrow in the address bar like Flock?

Firefox is ok but Flock is the best because they took mozilla code and
improved on the concept.

Installing SM v.2.x in a HD Partition OTHER Than c:\

2010-01-02 Thread HenriK
My memory is that a workaround was required when one wanted to have SM
v.1.x installed in a HD partition other than c:\.

Does SM v.2.x also require some sort of a workaround if one desires it
to be installed in a HD partition other than c:\? If so, where do I
find the instructions for the workaround?

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

The arrow in the Flock Location Bar is simply a Go button, which can be
added in SeaMonkey and placed next to the Location Bar, or any other
spot you desire.

Interviewed by CNN on 3/1/2010 02:12, George Carden told the world:
Is there a way to force Copernic to index SeaMonkey e-mail?

Not a documented way, no. I have asked the Copernic people to add this
capability in the past, but they ignored me.

I have wondered for a while if it's possible to deceive Copernic into
accepting the Seamonkey mail folders as Thunderbird mail folders. It
would involve installing Thunderbird, hacking its config files to point
to the Seamonkey folders -- and then never using Thunderbird, just
leaving it there to deceive Copernic.

Some day I will get around to try it. I'll probably have to use an older
Thunderbird version -- 2.x, or even 1.x -- because I use Copernic 2.3

Hi Yes but to do that would make it not part of the address bar itself,
which is how it's done in Flock and to a lesser degree Firefox.

Seamonkey is good, but too old fashioned in some areas to be commercial.

So you have to click on the arrow, or click on the Go button, or oress
Return/Enter. What's the real difference?

The latest Flock, 2.5.5, I have seen is based on a very outdated
Firefox, 3.0.15 anyway. Based on that, I am not sure I would recommend
it to anyone.
