Aha! Only works for plain-text emails/messages.

Displays as text? Or displays as graphic? Could read your comment either

The pref works for plain-text emails received.

So, send yourself a plain-text email with an emoticon in text format,
ala, :-).

If the pref is set you will see the plain-text emoticon as an image.

However, not if the eamil composed and sent as an HTML email.

And, frankly, this behavior seems stupid to me. :-) ought to always be
displayed as an image. Or never. Make a choice. But not only one.

Ed, when you sent yourself a text e-mail, did you check your sent folder
to see if the emoticon is displayed as text or symbol??

Plain-text emails with text emoticons display them as graphics if that
pref is set. HTML emails do not: They just show the text.

Another strange thing is; When i insert 2 or more emoticones without the

So you might have an extension or another configuration option (like
userContent.css rules) suppressing the display of emoticons as
graphics. Try running in Safe Mode to see if it would make any

Two of the emoticons you posted are not recognized by SeaMonkey. For a
list of SeaMonkey emoticons in your version (1.1.17), see

If this :-) does not display as a graphic, the problem could be the

In plain text, SeaMonkey will recognize certain sequences of ASCII text
characters, identify them as emoticons, and display them as graphics.
For instance, I'm not composing in HTML mode. All I have to do is type a

When you create a message, or reply to a message you need to be in HTML mode
 :-)

If you do not see the HTML toolbar above the essage text window close the new
message window back to where you have the original mail window, then press
 and
hole the Shift key and click the new message or reply message and you will
 see
all the HTRML tools ant the Smilie bitton. 8-)

 Michael ;-)

I never compose in HTML. I can still insert emoticons into messages and
have them display properly.

On occasion, I might filter and ignore all newsgroup messages
posted through GoogleGroups via Google's G2/1.0 user agent
because of spam from that source.

These are the old emoticons, still present on my SM because i dislike
 the new ones.

But the reason we replaced these with the Tango icons from Thunderbird
was that the old ones were pretty grotty and almost anything was better.

Yes, a program called Schmaili will allow you to import your emoticons
into it and then you can paste them into your e-mail. Check it out at:
