Well, on Linux i will get SM1 then. *g*
And that's the point. NoOp, you're using Linux it seems and Mark Hansen
is using windows. On Windows -no-remote is not available for SM1.1.x
(basically it is not available for Linx too, but an unknown parameter on
linux results in using MO_NO_REMOTE variable being used, which is
available on windows too, but not used automatically).

So Mark needs to first start SM1.1.x and then SM2.0 with -no-remote to
use both.

Or he adds MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable to his system and sets it to the value 1.

Ah OK... hit me with a bag of rocks :-)

Win2KP:

Test 1
1. Open 2.0 with -no-remote
2. Open 1.1.18 without -no-remote
Result: 1.1.18 opens independently.

Test 2
1. Open 1.1.18 without -no-remote
2. Open 2.0 with -no-remote
Result: 2.0 opens independently

Test 3
1. Open 2.0 without -no-remote
2. Open 1.1.18 with -no-remote
Result: 1.1.18 only opens a new 2.0 browser window and does not start
independently

Test 4
1. Open 1.1.18 with -no-remote
2. Open 2.0 without -no-remote
Result: 1.1.18 only opens a new 1.1.18 browser window and does not start

Got it. Thanks.

Yes :-) Maybe a miscommunication... The question was:

 2. While 2.0 is running start 1.1 with a -no-remote switch. Does 1.1

If I Start SM 2.0 /without/ the -no-remote switch and start 1.1 with
a -no-remote switch I will only get another 2.0 window.

If I:

1. Start SM 2.0 _with_ the -no-remote (or 1.1.18)
2. Then start SM 1.1.18 _with_ the -no-remote (or SM 2.0 if the above is
reversed)

Sorry if this seems elementary, but specifically, how do I install 2.0
without interfering with 1.1.18 or anything else? Right now, 1.1.18 is
in the folder C:Program files\Mozilla.org\Sea Monkey. Do I just install
2.0 in another folder Program files\Sea Monkey?

It is never a good idea to state your question in the subject line only.
The better procedure is to write a descriptive subject line, then state
your question in full in the body of the message.

Yes. Yes ... and Yes.

Actually, the default install location for SeaMonkey 2 is different than
the default install location for SeaMonkey 1.X. That doesn't mean the
default location is right for you, but just be aware.

Just install it, it installs to a separate directory from 1.1.18 the
only thing it will do is ask if you want or don't want to copy over your
user profile if everything else goes correctly.

That is exactly where it installs by default. It does not overwrite 1.1.18.

Tony's point about desktop shortcuts is well taken.

Just install it.

SM 2.0 installs to a different location then SM 1.1.18. Installing SM2
does not overwrite SM 1.1.18.

The profile migration wizard does not remove your 1.1.18 profile. It
copies the data to a different location. Form that point you have two
different profiles, one for 2.0 and one for 1.1.18.

If you prefer not to have the wizard migrate your data, simply shoose to
import nothing. A new blank profile will be created for 2.0.

One thing I will recommend is this: before installing 2.0, rename the
desktop icon to Seamonkey 1.1.18. If you do this, then you will be able
to launch 1.1.18 from your desktop. Otherwise, 2.0 will cause the
desktop icon to point to its location and not the older version.

And as Mr Jones suggests, say NO to the import wizard and then manually
import those items you want in 2.0.

Others have answered in this thread.

One warning: You cannot have both SM 1.1.18 and SM 2.0 running at the
same time. Once one of them is running, attempting to launch the other
will merely launch a new window of the one that is already running.

While running SM2 i sometimes launch SM1 with the parameter -no-remote.
Or i start SM2 a second time in another profile, also whith -no-remote,
when i want to check something.

Wow. Isn't that a bug? I sometimes do run two different things even if
they are related. I hope to finally install v2 during the long
Thanksgiving weekend. :)

Lee

I would take a much more prudent approach, since it is a fact that the
migration wizard does not always start and give you a choice:
Personnally, I have never seen it appear upon SM2 install. And even if
it does, the possibility of interference with your SM1 cannot ruled out.
Better be safe than sorry.

As I have stated in a different thread, it is wize to make a back up of
both SM 1 profile *and* installation folder, the latter because it may
contain add-ons which by design or customization did not install in the
profile folder. Just zip those folders, making sure the path is saved
along with the file (check the option in your zip program).

Then, and only then, go ahead, you are safe in case actually SM 2 messes
up your SM 1 installation, as it did for me (admittedly, my installation
is heavily customized, so this was something I expected).
