Re: There's a new stable akalla 2.50 x64 build

2017-05-15 Thread Frank-Rainer Grahl
Found the cause (or at least the main cause for SeaMonkey) today and spun off
a bug from the original bug:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1364977
Gave a test build to someone affected and it works. I hope the bug fix is ok.
If yes it will go into the final 2.48 for sure. ewong still has problems
enabling updates and so it hasn't been built yet.

Hello,
i installed this release and noticed that the right click "send to mail
recipient" command doesn't work anymore.
Seamonkey is defined as default mail client, but the right click "send to mail
recipient" command does nothing.
Any suggestion on how to fix it?
About memory usage, in my case sometimes it raeches 1,5 GB, but after a few
seconds it goes to 500 MB with 3 tabs open.

Francesco, as shown in my sig file I'm using the SM 2.46 Official
Release Version, not the unofficial 2.50 release (although you User
Agent suggests you posted via Google) that you suggest you are using.

What are you doing when you try to 'right click "send to mail
recipient"'?? Are you in a Browser window, or the Mail & Newsgroup screen??

My Right Click list fails to offer me "send to mail recipient" in either
screen! ;-(

ahahah... sorry, i just noticed that my post was not completely clear...
When i try to send a file through Windows explorer by using mouse right click and then
selecting "send to mail recipient", nothing happens.

Ah!! O.K., well then your system seems to not know what is your default
e-mail program. As you're using Windows, I would have expected
Outlook/Express or Live Mail to have been your default system e-mail
client if nothing else was selected.

Or better, Seamonkey opens, if previously closed, but no mail compose window
appear.
I also tried by creating a new sendto shortcut to Seamonkey with /compose
command but in this case the compose window opens, but with no attachment.
With 2.46 and 2.48b1 i had no problem.

Thanks!

Could it be that, whilst you had SM 2.46 or 2.48b1 installed, your
system knew they were your default, so tried to start them, but now that
you have removed them, your system just doesn't know what to start up
properly??

Daniel,
Seamonkey is still registered as default email client in my sistem. It starts
on sendto command but with no mail-compose window (and no file attached).

It should be stressed that these are Adrian's private releases ..i.e.

based on gecko 57 might become a tough cookie depending on how fast
classic extension and theme support is to be removed.

2.49 and 2.50 profiles should be interchangeable but if you see an
indexDB error in the error console blow away the storage folder,
storage.* and webappsstore* from you profile.

There are changes in favicon handling in 2.52 and such a profile might
not be 100% compatible with an older version.

The last 64- bit version that worked for me was 2.45!

I even uninstalled all add-ons, and v2.50, like the others after v2.45,
crashed every time I tried to compose an e-mail or reply to an e-mail. I
have no idea why.

Thanks.
I'll keep 2.50 since i can live with this bug After all it's the only one
i've found so far. Except for that, 64 bit 2.50 works really fine.

Daniel,
Seamonkey is still registered as default email client in my sistem. It starts
on sendto command but with no mail-compose window (and no file attached).

Well, after quiet a bit of regular browser use, I am up to 1.2GB of RAM
use on SM 2.51b with one window open.

While I would say that's a memory leak (even after running the options
under about:memory "Free Memory") it's certainly not as laggy as 2.50
was when it got to this RAM consumption level. Still seems performant to
me.

TCW, is it an activity thing or is it just growing?? i.e. if you find
out how much memory SM is using, then do nothing for some time
(overnight, maybe, or whilst you go for a meal), then when you comeback,
has the memory usage increased??

Seems to be related to activity. It doesn't seem to grow it just left
alone. Memory just isn't getting freed.

Which gets back to one of my hobby-horses why have buckets of
memory if it never gets used!!

Well, yes and no. This same mentality is why media rich (read:
bloated) web sites require a fast Internet connection and gobs of RAM
because they aren't designed for efficiency but because it's assumed
the user has gobs of RAM and system horsepower. No one designs apps to
be efficient, just chew up all that RAM CPU and all else be damned. No
one benefits from that mentality. Throwing more resources at the
problem never actually *fixes* the problem.

But if you have other programs that need that memory, then the system
(i.e. the OS, not any particular program) should be able to free up that
(used but now un-needed) memory but what would I know??

Not much, trust me! :-P

Right. People don't buy computers just to run a web browser. There
always other apps competing for memory+resources and one can make the
easy leap to the above stated argument that the other apps too are not
written for efficiency but to eat up as much resources as is possible.
Kinda sad when you think about it.

I think the Mozilla devs try hard to squash memory leaks (memshrink)
and improve performance (AWFY/AWSY) but most of the low hanging fruit
has already been picked. Better tools yet to be developed that will
more readily find memory leaks will help in this arena. Until then, we
keep reporting issues. =)

e-mail program.

No, only the aurora a2 channel has been discontinued by Mozilla. Looking at
recent code quality and other issues a mistake imho but telling the world how
stable the current release process became made a good press release and that
is all what seems to count :)

The logical step is to switch to beta.

I cannot find the 'task manager', I checked all the categories and do
not see it.

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL (if you're using Windows) and click Task Manager.
Might also have to click on "Show Processes From All Users" to see it.

Yes and no. There are often system processes that consume memory but are
not shown unless you check the box "Show processes from all users." The
default view can be very deceptive for example if Windows Update running
in background is secretly sucking up half your RAM.

You could use about:memory maybe. It's on the debugger menu. I am not
sure if you need the debugger addon.

https://wiki.mozilla.org/SeaMonkey:Debug_And_QA_UI

Yes, but it's not going to give you a sum amount being consumed. For a
mere mortal to parse out all the info that is shown when you measure
usage in about:memory, it can be intimidating.
