useragent and find general.useragent.extra.seamonkey Right-click

on it, choose Modify, and add the text NOT Firefox 3.6.8 at the
end of the string.

No, you don't need the PrefBar for that, but there are many other
nice features of that extension -- including the UA spoofing. You
can even add more UA strings if you wish. From Customize, select
Useragent then click the Edit button in the middle of the two
panels. Add/edit at will.

Does this change affect anything else?

No. Test your efforts here if you like:
http://tekrider.net/general/tektest.php

Is this how the line should look, with a space after the 9?
SeaMonkey/1.1.19 NOT Firefox 3.6.8

Yes, that looks good. You could add a slash between the word Firefox and
the version number (which I should have included above).
   NOT Firefox/3.6.8

I changed it to that, but the Hotmail page still doesn't work.

Try clearing cookies for hotmail. Maybe they implant something in a
cookie about your browser. I've tried it with my 1.1.17 and it works. My
wife uses SeaMonkey and has a hotmail account.

Also, what should show up on the tekrider page?

Mine says this:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.22) Gecko/20090605
SeaMonkey/1.1.17 NOT Firefox/3.6.8
(Ubuntu-1.1.17+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1)

The code on my page just reads the UA string, same as all those other
web sites do, trying to determine your browser. Obviously, it will vary
depending on versions and operating system, but will be very similar.

Thanks - that worked!

Your next mission, should you choose to accept it, is to contact
Microsoft and convince them to update the Hotmail website with proper
coding practices! [This post will self-destruct in five seconds.] :-)

the current version of Hotmail refuses Firefox older than 3.0. and

It's Microsoft's new browser sniffer. SeaMonkey is not one of their

 1. Use the PrefBar extension to change your UA string.
 2. Change your UA string to include the words NOT Firefox

I don't have the latest version around, so don't know exactly where that
 is ...

I posted it in three different places including hotmail itself and got
no sensible answers, this NG is the only one that seem to even
 acknowledge that the problem exists.

It is a problem, but not just a Microsoft problem. Way too many sites
with clueless authors test only with major browsers, and include code
(usually JavaScript) to see which one you are using. Typically, they
test for Internet Explorer (possibly by version), Firefox, Safari, maybe
Opera. SeaMonkey is not a common browser and is overlooked, so you don't
get some or all of the page.

With well-written pages, it is only necessary to test for Internet
Explorer, and add code to fix up certain problems only that browser has.

The PrefBar I mentioned is available here:

When I try to open hotmail in sea monkey it puts my email list down
the left of the page in big letters. The page looks nothing like my
old hotmail page that I am used to. The only way to get this old
page I am used to is to type www.hotmail.com again in the url space
and it sometimes opens up like it used to. (mostly not)

It's Microsoft's new browser sniffer. SeaMonkey is not one of their
choices, so various parts of the page do not get loaded, including
the CSS that lays out the pages.

In case posters can not understand my wafflings, I post two pictures
of my screen, the first is the unwanted new one that keeps coming
up, the second is the page that I am used to.How can I stop the new
one coming up all the time? IE usually opens hotmail as sea monkey
used to Sea monkey opens up like the first screen photo and I don't
want this. Do I have to use IE for hotmail to get around this?

No, but you can do one of two things.
1. Use the PrefBar extension to change your UA string.
2. Change your UA string to include the words NOT Firefox

I've seen the same problem and Prefbar works great. Sometimes Hotmail
doesn't need a spoofed UA but when it happens, I change to a IE8 UA and
get the page loaded. then do a reload page with real UA and it's there.
