Might be useful as a tow vehicle for carting WVO. Strong frame. Am planning on hauling a 2000 liter tank. Problem is, it's a gasoline V8, auto transmission. Gasoline in Chile is about 85 cents a liter, or 3.25 a gallon. Propane is an option at 55 cents a liter or 2.10 a gallon. Makes much more sense to use our own biodiesel. To do this, an engine conversion is in order. The Rover/BMW turbo diesels aren't available here, but Ford Ranger pickups made in Argentina come with a 2.8 liter PowerStroke Tdi built by International (used to be Maxion, Brazil) which i am told is a further development of the 300tdi Rover engine. I'm working on finding a ZF bell-housing to see if this conversion is possible. [biofuel] Newbie questions regarding Biodiesel.
Hi, As a newbie I became aware of the possibilities of Biodiesel 2 weeks ago. Im interested in making my own biodiesel for my LandRover Td5. Furthermore at my work I'm responsible for the purchase of diesel for 230 trucks. I would like to make it my goal to switch all of the above to Biodiesel. Now last week i spoke to a managing director from 2 German firms one of whitch switched to biodiesel which he says he regrets for the following reasons: - fuel consumption went up - power went down - for refueling truchs need to find a BD station petro diesel isn't an option anymore - service intervalls got in half The last piont has been varrified by truck manufactorers we use. Hi Todd, Thx for the reply, the manufacturers specs are known this is not the problem. My concerns are mainly: If loss of power and a higher consumption occurs will these two even out the economical advantage of BD? And very importantly for us can we still fuel up with petro diesel? I'll explain, idea is to manufactor our own BD. Our trucks can carry between 600 and 1000 liter of fuel. As we're a carrier with a Eastern Europe/Asia focus many of our trucks have to fill up several times before arriving back at their homebase. This means they will have to be able to take petro diesel as well as BD. Date: Mon, 7 Jun 2004 22:29:24 -0500 Why not address all four points? 1) The energy content of B-100 is only ~3% less than petroleum distillate fuel oil. 2) Energy loss can only be as much as the reduction in energy content. 3) Create your own filling station. 4) Service should be no more frequent than OEM recommendations at ~3,000 mile intervals. What most would take interest in is hearing/seeing the manufacturer's specs/recommendations. Sure. If switching from petrol to B-100, even I would recommend more frequent maintenance of the fuel and lubrication systems. But after the entire system has been cleaned out? Maybe inspect the oil every 2,000 miles until all cautions are met, but no more than that. Might also depend upon the feedstock of the biodiesel. Certainly it would be wiser to check the pan with some frequency, perhaps twice often, when running fuel derived from drying oils or fish oils or those stocks heavily contaminated with either. Pieter I recently became interested in Biodiesel and want to start producing it or at least give it my best shot. However, it seems I cannot get hold of decent lye (or NaOH) would you mind telling me where your supplier has hidden himself? Or where else I might be able to find good Lye? Hi Frag, Got my Lye at Boerenbond/Welkoop and my methanol at a farmacist the methanol I'm not sure about the purity it says nothing on the bottle. The lye is 99%. Hi Frag, The company who delivers to BB is Breustedt, if I remember correctly they are based in Apeldoorn. Found them via another Dutchie on the forum. Their number is listed they were very helpfull in finding a BB near my house that sells lye! Found mine in one of the smallest BB's in the neighborhood. Hi Pieter, Seems I'm pretty good at making mayonaise but BD is another story. As I've done a step by step analysis of all concerned parts of the proces the only unknown is the quality of my methanol. The bottle doesn't say what the percentage of Methanol is May I ask where you get your methanol or who is the producing company?
