Back when it was new (1991?) it was pretty cool...especially when I live in
Washington, D.C.--the claymation animation was a novel idea, and added to the visuals.
The interface *was* clunky, I agree, but it wasn't the worst game I've played (by
FAR!)

Sorry -- I didn't, so I am overtly harsh on it sometimes. I think it had a lot
of good things going for it, but it had severe programming issues and an
 overall clunky presentation.

Maybe it got better as you progressed? I got stuck after an hour and quit in
 frustration.

YES! Those are the guys!

After working with them on this, we got the files extracted, and then one of them made
the little extractor file for me. I was unaware that they then posted it on their
site--cool! I didn't want to post the extractor on the Museum site, because I felt as
tho I didn't deserve the credit (after all, it WAS their file). Nice to see that they
understand the historical value enough to share it with the world. :)

I think as long as you kept the sound samples to 30 seconds or less,
plus just did a representative group of them (not all), then you should
 be ok.

**

Understand that 'Roland Files' are actually plain, old MIDI files, played on a special
sound card called the Roland Sound Canvas, or SCC1 or Roland RAP 10. In most cases,
the music was composed on this type of card, because it had the best samples of it's
day.

Today's sound cards all have a 'sampled sound' feature, rather than using FM synths to
play music, so the music is *pretty* close to what you would hear if played thru an
old Roland card. Just find (extract) the MIDI from the game, and play it using your
sound card, but running in MPU-401 mode.

A good example of what I'm trying to say is this:

You can play the opening to the Ray Charles song 'What I Say' on any organ, and it'll
sound good. But it'll only sound EXACTLY like the record if you use a classic 60's
Hammond organ.

a lower price.

I do not have these but I can get them. Of course I have to arrange a price

turn them around for. I can always sell the UVI and the Wing Commander on
eBay. Make me an offer for the Strike Commander (or all three) so I know

I'm not banished? --Thanks Jim! :)

I understand now where your thought process was going. I too have wondered about the
'validity' of an item or two, and I can say that at least OUR Akalabeths are safe from
being judged 'forgery'--
* one has a Certificate of Authenticity, signed by RG himself.
* The other one was handed to us by RG--he actually restored his Apple II just to
make it for us--(a good [true, and confirmable] story is the best COA).

**
-- The con I just came back from had some people paying
for tables out of their own pocket *just to show off their collection*, they weren't
even selling anything. And one guy, who owned every single Lynx game (in multiples
necessary to play multiplayer, even), had them all out for public playing, including 8
Lynx units! It was very refreshing to see that kind of mentality for a change.
**

Hehe--we've done the exact same thing, at Dragon*Con--it cost us a pretty penny ($900
for 2 tables!), and we took the opportunity to also hand out fliers, showing
Ultima/Wing Commander re-makes in the works. Although much less expensive, we did the
same thing at Philly Classic, using our hotel room instead--and a good time was had by
all. It was incredible to see the enthusiasm of our little group, and Paula and I
were paid back in full by getting to see other people's prized games. I got to touch
a TRS-80 Zork, an IBM Adventures in Serenia, and a Leisure Suit Larry
Beachtowel!(--although I think that the game plot-vs-promotional item conjure up
tie-ins too disgusting to be even mentioned!!)

Being coy about this is against my better judgement, and if this offends anyone,
please state factually that I didn't get the joke.

*Putting an original akalabeth sticker on a 'non-original' disk is a forgery.

*Putting an original sticker on a disk that has the data copied from an original
Akalabeth is a forgery.

Tom is correct. The sticker on it's original backing, in the way that it was
presented (sold) to him is much more valuable than creating a 'new' copy of a game.
The value of an Akalabeth made your way is exactly ZERO. Anyone who bought it would
get a certificate of 'UNAUTHENTICITY' on the Museum website. Thoughts like this not
only decrease the value of your reputation, but the reputation of the game collecting
community as a whole.

Like I said, I don't want to offend, but I will stand by my principles. It's forgery,
a felony--punishable by up to 10 years in a Federal prison.

that a rare items sells will bring out the others who want to sell.

My personal belief is that this works thru patience, and advertising. It happens
eventually anyway (look at DRASH!), and will happen for ALL of the things we are
hunting for.

By advertising, I mean that if you were to put an article or two on the web about the
items that you desire, someone will eventually see it, and put it up for sale.

Don't worry, Marco--we won't. :)
The Museum specializes in 'preserving' Origin games. We already are very proud of our
'MINT-SEALED' collection, and these titles just add to them. Trust me, we always keep
1 copy of an 'opened' game, and 1 copy that is sealed, whenever we can.

There was an interesting discussion some years ago in the newsgroups with another
great collector, who shared a different viewpoint--They thought that collecting sealed
games was ludicrous--that the games were meant to be PLAYED, and the extras were
meant to be touched, read, and played with. I respect that opinion, but I disagreed.
My thought is that some games go far beyond the concept of playing--they're ART.
Keeping them in their original form is just as important as the game itself. The
thoughts and concepts behind the original presentation of classic games is just as
important as the game itself! I've said it before, and I'll say it again: It's more
than cardboard and floppy disks.

I have complete confidence that the data will survive--I'll leave that aspect to the
collector-types that dig THAT aspect of collecting (Jim, Dan, etc.--VERY capable
hands!) I prefer to distinguish what WE do as 'preservation'. It shows respect for
the MEDIUM, as well as the MEDIA--and with that, a fuller respect for the hobby as a

Also, this box looks...familiar. Could it be one of the ones that has already been

Re: [SWCollect] And then one day, the Holy Grail is found

2004-03-30 Thread ommail

HOLY GUACAMOLE! ...and congratulations, Pedro!

For those who don't know what it is, this is the infamous 'Origin Audio CD-Volume 1'.
It is one of the rarest Origin items to acquire, due to it's strange beginnings...A
little history is in order here:

Back in 1990, Origin was in it's glory days, and on the cutting edge of technology,
including the realm of computer music. Roland, Adlib, and Creative Labs were making
games sound better than ever before, and with musicians like The Fatman, Dave Govet,
and Martin Galway, music on a computer was taken to a new level--it was worth
listening to when you WEREN'T PLAYING GAMES! Origin decided to put out a CD of
original game music called 'Origin Audio CD Volume 1', containing tracks from:

Wing Commander 1
Wing Commander 2
Ultima 6
Bad Blood
Times of Lore
Savage Empire
Martian Dreams
(Pedro, please correct this if I'm incorrect--I'm not at home as I write this)

..and here's where the story gets sketchy...

* Most Origin people don't even know about the CD, or don't remember it.

* Lots of research and emails have given mixed answers.

* All agree that it was not for sale in the US.

* Some say that it was for Origin employees only-this is probably not true. I was
told that there were a few copies in a closet in Origin, but have not been able to
confirm it positively. (...as a sidebar, There was NO OTHER original Akalabeth in the
Origin vault--CONFIRMED!)

*I KNOW of at least one Austin-based Origin employee to have one.

* I've also been told that it was only released in Engalnd--this may be true, but it
gets even weirder.

* Another story tells that it was only released in 'British-held territories'--My
first copy's history says that it was sold retail in Hong Kong, but why on earth would
Origin have done this?!

* More info reveals Underworld Dragon's research, taken from his webpage:

This was probably what prompted Origin to put a gag in the end of the Black Gate
credits, saying Soundtrack available from Origin!. Unfortunately for them, the gag
backfired, and they had so many requests from people thinking it was a real product
that in the next game, Serpent Isle, they had to put in a retraction: Soundtrack NOT
available - so DON'T ASK! Guess it just goes to show, be careful what you ask for!
___

Underworld's page is unfortunately outdated, so it still indicates that it probably
doesn't exist. (he now DOES know about it's existence tho--and it was a magic moment
to see his smile when I put it in his hands!)

We now know of it's existence, and that it was sold in Hong Kong.

BUT...

I too have found another 'sealed' copy of 'Origin Audio CD-Volume 1' (I bought it off
of Ebay in Q4 of 2003). I now have two. I also know someone else (Ben Lesnick) who
got a 'sealed' copy as well (he got it from Ebay in Q4 of 2003). I also saw someone
else who has one from a few years ago (Lancelot Du Lake). They seem to now be popping
up everywhere...perhaps I'm paranoid, but C.E. has taught us all to be 'ever
vigilant'.

Could these be forgeries, or was there a box of them uncovered recently? We need to
find out. I know that my original copy is probably real, but I never checked it
closely against the shrinkwrapped one. I will compare them this week, and give you
all a report. I'll also try to review my emails from that period, and find out who I
bought it from. This could be the first 'Origin Forgery', or the luckiest day in
Pedro's LIFE! Like I said, I'm probably wrong, but I think we have enough knowledge
and resources to find out.

Hello list,

I have this theory: I know I will find, cheap (I have the principle of not paying more than $50 per computer game), all the items I'd really like to have in my Ultima collection.

Time has proven that I'm right. It has happened so far with the Ultima items I'm most proud of, like the autographed Ultima 6, autographed Savage Empire, big box Ultima 2, Ultima California Pacific, etc.

Still, some months ago, my personal Holy Grail kept eluding me...

The chase started, a few years back, as all the quests for Holy Grails: I thought the item to be a myth, until I actually found someone who had it! And then I found someone else (who actually happens to be on this list ;) ) who also had it! Perhaps there are others? It's likely. Must I become one of them? Obviously!

Suddenly, the myth becomes reality and the search at last has a purpose. As with all the other items, I have faith it will eventually fall onto my lap. There is no rush, nothing to hurry or worry about.

And one day, it does. Shrinkwrapped. Brand new. I open it up (what an heresy!) and discover it to be as good as I imagined it.

Is the search over? No. One isn't enough. In the following period of time (weeks? months?) I got my hands on three more from the same source. Not one, not two, but three more. All brand

Hi all.

just thought I'd open an invitation to a historic event, that officially justifies our
hobby. The Smithsonian Institution is now having a seminar on 'An exploration on the
art and science of electronic game design', appropriately called Games People Play.
It's scheduled for Sunday, May 16th. Here's a link to the details:

http://residentassociates.org/com/games.asp

The Origin Museum will be there (after all, Doug Church, lead programmer of Ultima
Underworld 1 and 2 will be featured!), and it would be a fun reason to come and see
our great Capitol city. Paula and I would certainly show you all the town on
Saturday, and perhaps even have a 'round table' at The Museum on Saturday night for
anything related to collecting! The first round of drinks would be on us! :)

Please reply and let us know if there'd be any interest in a get-together in May.

I find it fascinating that our hobby takes us down many different paths, far and away
from software collecting. Sometimes they’ve taken us deep into unknown territory,
hunting for that possible elusive copy, and we get a bit of culture with our favorite
dish. Sometimes they’re good, and sometimes they’re bad (See C.E. Forman’s ‘Detroit
Suck City’ review on his website), but they take us to places and ideas that we never
would’ve ventured otherwise. I’m currently involved in a few Museum projects that are
showing me new people, places, things, and ideas that I NEVER would’ve seen before.
My latest project is showing me Hollywood special effects, taxidermy, and window
display personnel—all on behalf of my gaming obsession! I’ll surprise you all with
pictures this week as the project ‘gels’, but I just wanted to ask if everyone else on
the boards has as much fun with these diversions as I do?

OPEN FORUM TIME:
What unusual paths has your gaming obsession taken you to?

[SWCollect] Test

2004-03-10 Thread ommail
Hi Guys!

Been trying to get back on the list with my new email address--Jim's been helping me
(Thanks Jim!)

If this works, you'll be hearing more from The Origin Museum.

..MUCH more!

Joe G.

[SWCollect] The Origin Museum--We're BACK!!

2004-03-10 Thread ommail
ARE WE LIVE --YEAH!

Whew! Gotta lot of catching up to do...SO, here's an old email I tried to send that
never got thru--please disregard the dated material:

**
Hugh Falk Writes
I can sense Joe taking out a second mortgage on the house as I write this. And who
really needs a car anyway.. when there are this many Origin games and artifacts left
to buy :-)
**
Heehee--I always find it hysterical to see that people remember the Ol' Museum here,
even when I don't post regularly--please take no offense--I love all you guys (in a
manly sorta way)--Trust that you are ALL mentioned fondly and frequently in our
household.
Just an example of a typical Sunday afternoon in our home:

Paula: (looking over my shoulder): WHOA!--Fortran has stuff up on Ebay?!
Me: Yeah, but it's all common--I assume it's just his doubles.
Paula: Did you check his 'other auctions'?
Me: Of course I did.
Paula: Well, he may put something rare up later--keep an eye on it.

the problem is my old email provider that is linked to the forum--it's laggy, and
lousy (I sometimes don't get mail until two entire days after delivery!). I want to
reconnect to swcollect with my new address, but the old address seems to not want to
send any messages to disconnect it! (Thanks to Jim for fixing this--it's great to be
back!) :)

Funnily enough, it's my WIFE who is pressuring me to bid on all of this stuff! After
exhausting all of our extra cash on the Drash, I think we need to back off on the
purchases a bit, but who am I to disobey a request from the love of my life? :)

***
HUGH:
The guy even mentions the Origin Museum in a couple of his ads. It's like he's
taunting you, Joe :-))

TOM:
Not taunting I think, showing respect, I have a feeling they know each other

***

Tom was right, Hugh--I do know the guy (NOW)--When I saw his first auctions, I
immediately emailed him, and asked about other stuff. He asked me to call him on the
phone to talk about selling me some of his rarer stuff, and to ask what it was worth.
Being that he's selling his entire collection to put a downpayment on his first home,
I felt that it would have been callous of me to try and get 'The Great Deal'. I
pushed him to Post the rarer stuff on Ebay--I'll bid on it anyway, and also give my
collector friends and opportunity to bid as well--you'll make more money this way!
Please send your thank you cards and letters to The Origin Museum. :P

He also gave me some GREAT Origin stories that I'll be posting on my site soon! (we
talked on the phone for HOURS--thank the higher power for 10-10-987!) If anyone's
interested, I did a few minor updates to the site recently, (in the STORIES section).
One aricle about the FM-TOWNS, another about the U7 'Kill Lord British' thing, and
some old pics of R.G. when we visited in 2001.

Rhea (pronounced 'RAY') Shelly is a great guy, fellas. He's one of us--just a working
class hero, with a passion for game collecting. When you bid, be kind, but know that
there was more than ONE sniper in Washington, D.C.! B-)

Props to Pedro for doing the same thing as me--writing to him, and asking about other
stuff! (yes, Pedro...he told me you were interested as well...now you need to share
with all of us any deals you got!) :) I just always assumed that this tactic was
'old hat' for you guys--I may be shooting myself in the foot here, but some of the
best deals that I ever got were from making friends with ebay sellers, who ended up to
be gaming company employees!--In fact, most of my introductions to all of YOU
initiated from this same practice!

Now that my email problems to the forum are rectified, I may as well take this
opportunity to do a 'Shout Out' list to everyone:

Josh--Nice to meet you--I am chartreuse with envy!

Tom--Latest acquisitions? I have new pics to show you!

Edward--I have something of interest for you--the quest is solved!--email me, and say
'hello'

Hugh--I miss our talks. Your Apple still works! :)

Stuart, Dan--Sorry that this year's Philly Classic wasn't organized like last
year--(best Philly accent)We'll miss yuz both.

C.E.--Thanks for the plugs on your site--I get tickled when I read about myself! :)

Romero--Any new pics of stuff in your basement to drive me crazy with envy? Mail 'em!

Steve--I talk to you too much ALREADY! ;)

Pedro--How goeth the Akalabeth research? Excellent work, last we wrote. Can we
combine our new info?

Alexander--We need to catch up! I've got new stories! The battle for the 'Bad Blood
Art' will be bloody indeed! :)

Jim--Any new projects? I'd love to hear about them.

All involved in the organization of a Computer Game Expo--Thanks for all of your hard
work!

As a fitting end to this email, I now present to you all a photo showing proof that
