Re: [Swlfest] THE WINTER SWL FEST IS MOVING DATES !!!!!
I think it would be easier to have it in a hotel somewhere. As someone previously said, schools could be a problem due to them not accepting alcohol and the need for a minder. Also one thing I thought of is that the Saturday night activities (especially if one were to know such things :) would be easier to conduct in a hotel setting. If you are at a school or other non-hotel facility, the mobility issue could be a concern. Many times people like to go up to their rooms and take a rest. SOme folks don't attend all forum sessions. [Swlfest] A painful decision I need to make
I am trying to decide if I want to return to the SWL Fest. Ever since I got that vicious email from Sheldon Harvey two years ago (I still have a copy), I have been a bit spooked about returning. I keep in touch with David Goren and he tells me that people have contacted/said to him (knowing that we stay in touch) that they wish I would return. I just don't knowI have blocked Sheldon on all social media. No one knows (well now they do) how much this hurt me. The email he sent was totally unsolicited to my Gmail account criticizing for my pageant involvement as a judge and staff member of our Mrs. Georgia America pageant. I am human. I do hurt. And this has hurt me in ways I didn't would still be with me. Someone convince me-either on the list or direct to my Gmail. 73 Maryanne ___ Swlfest mailing list Swlfest@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/swlfest To unsubscribe: Send an E-mail to swlfest-requ...@hard-core-dx.com?subject=unsubscribe, or visit the URL shown above. [Swlfest] This is an email I thought I would never have to write-sad news. Manolo de la Rosa of Radio Havana Cuba and Radio Rebelde died July 6th
This is a tough one for me to write folks.I was browsing thru Google and something told me to look up Manolo. To say I was shocked was an understatement. I do know there was an effort some years back to get Manolo to the Fest but it never worked out. I made the initial inquiry to him and he was very open to coming to see us. I think right after those efforts he was at the Mexican DX meeting in 2003 that Jeff White (?) organised. I always thought and this is something I told Marie Lamb that the week of the DX meeting was the week I was getting married in Blackpool right after Ken and I came back from the IOC meeting in Prague. (I always told Marie this can be filed under "hm.") I met Manolo in 1991 at the EDXC meeting in Sitges (on the coast right outside of Barcelona.) Same meeting that Tom Meyer also attended! The following year at the EDXC meeting a got a frantic message from Dario Monferini (sp?) saying that when I was in Moscow right after EDXC I had to go see Manolo. I don;'t know how Manolo knew I was in Sitges-but the SWL community is quite small and news travels fast. He got word that he was leaving Moscow (sadly on a direct flight.) I will let you figure the rest out-as I went to Michigan right after I came back from Moscow and made a few phone calls as soon as I got back to Atlanta. To say I am heartsick is putting it mildly. I don]t understand a lot of Spanish but an English report said he died "of respatory complications." (Heart attack?) The story also said he was cremated. If you remmeber Glenn Houser reporting that Manolo was taken off the air for 6 months (due to an auto accident where someone was saldy killed( we all thought the worst. Thank goodness people kept the pressure on so that nothing really bad happened to him. We have lost a star. Re: [Swlfest] Again absent
Blaine, to get this discussion back on track to it's original purpose, I too have had problems with the person from Academia-I reported it to Rich and John (the Fest organisers) and they handled it to my satisfaction. This involved a very ugly comment that was made to me a week after my husband passed away-I had made the decision to come to the Fest, although I had discussion with Rich and John as I recall that I may cancel. My MIL was here and we decided the best thing for us was to get out of this house for a week and that is what we decided to do. One has to remember the Fest is an all volunteer situation. Right at the first day, it is emphasised that if an attendee has *any* problem (i.e. with the hotel, registration, or any other Fest-related concern) that it is to be brought to their attention. Any issues with raffle tickets :) are something I can handle. It's been a family reunion atmosphere-over the years some people have stopped coming for various reasons (mostly health or they have passed away.) But we have welcomed new folks too-and the issues that have cropped up have been few and far between. I would have suggested to the gentleman that had issues for him to bring it up to a Fest organiser-I guarantee it would have been handled promptly instead of letting it fester to the point we are having this discussion now. Albeit I did wait a number of years (out of embarrassment) before I brought up the comments that were made to me, I am satisfied about how things were handled. Everyone is welcome at the Fest-and I encourage everyone to come, it's a good time and a break from the dreary winter! And on-site, raflle tickets are the ol' mantra: $1 each, 6 for $5, 13 for $10! I am placing everyone in the capable hands this year of Gary Neal, because due to work and other commitments, I will have to miss my first Fest since I started attending in 1993. See you in 2012! Re: [Swlfest] Need help with Grundig G3
Greg, thanks, I am getting the Sleep icon popping up every so often. I spent some time late last night trying to clear it. I will take the batteries out and power it from the mains as someone else suggested. It's a great radio and I am pleased with the performance. Re: [Swlfest] Best Western Reservations
AJ, call the hotel and ask for Francis. He is the front desk manager and will right any mistakes that have been made. When I called for my reservation, I waited until the day shift came in to take care of this. I have found if you call the night clerk (the older lady, she's nice but if you have special requests, it's better to have a manager take care of it that knows our group.) I have every year two specific requests: 2 large double beds, non-smoking. The non-smoking room is a must, I can be flexible on the double beds-can live without it-I just ask for it because I prefer the extra space. My suggestion: call Francis during day shift hours and give him a chance to make things right. Re: [Swlfest] It may be a bit too late to think about, but...
I hope we even HAVE some people to deputize---the Weather Channel just said tractor-trailers are all parked along the Northeast Extension in Philly.
