From https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2016/05/12/accessible-ux-with-html5-and-uia/ Building a more accessible user experience with HTML5 and UIA By Microsoft Edge Team Recently, we introduced Microsoft Edge’s new accessibility architecture, which inherently supports modern web standards, and provides a foundation to make the web platform more accessible than ever. To build a comprehensive ecosystem across all products and users of every ability, assistive technologies build end user experiences on top of accessibility frameworks. In Edge, accessibility information is exposed through the UI Automation (UIA) framework. HTML, CSS, and ARIA markup is translated to UIA objects that assistive technologies use to provide a tailored experience. In this post, we’ll walk through some concrete examples of how our new architecture improves the end user’s experience, and specifically how markup defines the experience of navigating with assistive technologies like screen readers. Our examples focus on Narrator, but any screen reader using UIA will be able to take advantage of these improvements. Measuring success with HTML5Accessibility As part of our ongoing work to advance Edge’s accessibility, we want to make sure developers and users can easily get accurate information on platform accessibility across browsers, making it easier to build more accessible sites and make informed decisions when using accessibility features. For example, we are working closely with HTML5Accessibility’s maintainer, Steve Faulkner of the Paciello Group, to update the site and refresh its design. HTML5Accessibility is a popular resource for this information that summarizes and rates major browsers’ HTML5 platform accessibility. Some of the success criteria include mappings to the accessibility API, keyboard accessibility, and the accessibility of error states. The upcoming refresh (which you can preview today on GitHub) includes changes to clarify pass criteria, add additional tests, and even give the site a fresh and modern makeover. Comparing the old and new HTML5Accessibility.com designs. Note that the updated site does not yet reflect the accessibility improvements in EdgeHTML 14. Many of the accessibility APIs discussed in this post are tracked on HTML5Accessibility, or were leveraged to build the site’s upcoming redesign. Each element or attribute has its own test page, so you can use Narrator to try out the user experience and open Inspect or F12 to see how they are mapped to UIA. Note that HTML5Accessibility currently tracks the status of shipping versions of the listed browsers, and has not yet been updated with the new test criteria. With the work landing in EdgeHTML 14, we look forward to a much-improved score for Edge soon! We’ll share more when those updates are available. Hi Charlie, Are you saying it used to say this and no longer does? Assuming your sound device software is still installed, the only thing that occurs to me is that the sound device doesn't see a difference between the state before and after plugging them in. Hi, I've noticed this too, there was an update to the Facebook plugin after a night where everyone was signed in, but no one could see each other. Everyone appeared to be offline. Re: like jaws insert-f10?
Rebecca, I think what Curtis Delzer was referring too were hidden windows that don't ordinarily show up in the normal display. In other words applications that run in the background. I for one am not all that familiar with these types of programs, except from what I see as background tasks within the task manager, and there are many listed there at any given time, and these can't be viewed in the task view either. However, now that they have been brought to my attention, I think I might like to be privy to these apps myself. If you want an alternative to Alt-Tab, you can use the Task View. Press the Windows Key-Tab. Window-Eyes should say, "Running applications. Task view." You can press the left and right arrow keys to arrow through the list of running programs. Press enter to select the one you want. Window eyes can move the Mouse cursor around by using the Number Pad keys. Does JAWS have this same feature? Or if it is different, what keys are used to move the Mouse? And then to select something with the mouse? Thanks for the Off Topic question inquiry.I know some here use both screen readers. There is one command in JFW which I find extremely valuable here in windows ten, and that is the "jaws key, f10" command which gives the list of windows showing, but often, in windows ten, there are hidden windows by which cannot be reached easily by hitting alt-tab too and from. :) Is there a script which is available which can be downloaded which simulates or perhaps does better this "listing of the windows" command and then gives the ability to "close" them? I've found things which are behind the "alt-tab" windows which seem to make my computer more "snappy" if I close them using that jaws key f10 window list. -- Curtis Delzer ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. Re: Microsoft Speech Annoyance
Hi Dan: I think that these things are hard coded into the synthesizer. That is why I am sticking to Espeak. It sounded annoying at first, but I have gotten used to it. It sure beats having to listen to those annoyances that you mentioned. Microsoft Speech Annoyance
Hello, I'm using the Microsoft Speech Platform with the U.S. English voice, WE 9.4 and Windows 7 HP. The problem is that it expands abreviations to whole words even when it's not appropriate. For example, instead of saying "Wizard of OZ" it says "Wizard of Ounce" or the word "miss" is pronounced "Mississippi" regrardless of the context. I've played with the settings in the Screen tab in the WE control panel but nothing helps. Is there a fix or is it a limitation of the synthesizer? For those in the U.S., have a good Memorial Day weekend. RE: excell 2016
Hi Juan, These options can be found by selecting the Format button in the Home tab of the ribbon. When the Format button's pull down opens, you can Arrow Down and select Rename Sheet or Move or Copy Sheets. These items are the same as the ones presented in the context menu you had used in the past. Somehow, I got a slight case of fumble fingers on the keyboard while sending out an email, because shortly after doing that, I keep getting a message from Thunderbird that this may be a junk mail message. RE: verbage
Hi, Check the setting Screen/other/split mixed case. If it is set to on with acronyms, set it to just on. With this setting set to on with Acronyms it'll spell out words that are all uppercase like I B M. Due to humidity and windiness, it can feel warmer or colder than the thermometer reading. This second number gives that subjective experience.
