Window-Eyes Update 9.5.4 not an update
As somebody else pointed out already. This is a patch only. No bugs are fixed and no new enhancements are included. Registry Cleaner
A little off topic, but what is the best accessible registry cleaner and will it also repair the registry? I attempted installing the new WE 9.5.4 update and the install failed with a 0x80040707 unhandled exception error. I talked with the WinEyes Support and they had no idea what it could be. A google search had a little info on it and suggested a register clean and repair might fix it. --___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. RE: Going Backward in Accessibility?
Steve, It would be interesting to sit down with you and understand better what your approach is, I would guess that there is a good deal I could learn from you. However, I still feel you are missing the point of what I wrote. To clarify, I would maintain that if Microsoft changed to some new menu structure tomorrow and you and a sighted co-worker sat down tomorrow to do some task and the items needed for that task was on the screen that it is likely they would do it faster until you became more familiar with the new structure and developed an approach. I have not ever argued that you might not develop methods of doing it more quickly, but you have to go through the development process. Many of us do this and we compete well. When I originally wrote on this, I was responding some to posts that indicated that we tend to not like change and that we have to realize the world is changing. I'm paraphrasing. My contention was that when things change, we tend to have to take the time to develop and/or learn alternative means to work efficiently. In some cases, the methods we choose will be more efficient than the visual interface that is generally used. I also recognize that some sighted people develop their own more efficient approaches as well. Therefore, change poses more of a problem for those of us who need to develop a more efficient way of operating because we are at somewhat of a disadvantage until we have alternative procedures in place. Our alternative approaches, once in place, may very well be more efficient, but in some cases, our alternative approaches need better support. . You may have a way around this, but I have found that using keystrokes in Excel, for example, has gotten more frustrating. I find that if I type a three key sequence quickly to get to a known item on the ribbon, sometimes keystrokes are lost. Therefore, I have to throttle back sometimes. I probably still get there faster, though, than by moving a mouse. Let me be clear, I am not saying it can't be done and that we can't get good at it, only that I think we have more of a challengs at the outset which makes us not embrace change when it happens. You may still disagree with me, but I have never argued that we could never be more efficient than someone using a mouse, as long as some of the methods we use are implemented well. Steve, This is a useful tip, and I was not trying to assume anything. My point, though, was that we adopt strategies to be efficient that may depend upon a number of less obvious features of programs. Even your solution is not as quick as visually finding something on the ribbon, moving the mouse pointer to it and clicking. However, adding a feature that is used often to the custom toolbar is probably quicker than using a mouse, but this still involves some setup. We work to find ways of being efficient and by networking and such we succeed pretty well. I was not saying it couldn't be done. However, when software is updated, our methods of being efficient are often broken and need to be recreated, even if the software is technically accessible. I think this makes some of our resistance to change understandable, and I also think we have to think some about interface issues in the long run because change will become more and more a part of the evolution of technology. Hi Steve, You're assuming though that everyone has to go the long way round to access ribbons and options within them. In Office for example, you don't need to access the ribbon when you can't find something. Just bring it up, then tab to the Tell Me What To Do edit box, and type in what you want. It is usually found, however deeply it is buried. The problem is training. Trainers don't teach these additional methods of getting there quickly. RE: Chris Grabowski
I agree with you Don, but perhaps Doug does look in from time to time. According to the notification of the need to update Window-Eyes, he does have a management role, not a customer support function. So: managers couldn't be expected to wade through the noise on this list as it was in the good old days, but probably do see stuff brought to their attention. So: who does now wade through this stuff? The old GW approach of active monitoring of the list was something many appreciated, but it wasn't always easy - of that I am sure. RE: Chris Grabowski
Hi Don. I've seen Chris's reply, so you have probably also seen it. However: I did get two responses to an email sent to his old AI Squared address, and one of these was from Doug. Looks as if Window-Eyes support services are now down to Doug and maybe others who are not contributing to the list. So: questions regarding monitoring of the list, list moderation, and as Curtis commented - profiling new releases are still causes for concern and conjecture. Re: screen reader mode Jarte
Brice, I've heard of that copying a line of text to the clipboard method many times. but I've never had to use it. consequently I don't know what it is. I would uninstall Jarte and then be sure to uninstall the Office compatibility pack as well. Then download and install this different version of the compatibility pack. It fixed Jarte for me. https://www.dropbox.com/s/k0knh4oged1j45y/OfficeConverterPack.zip?dl=1 Then reinstall Jarte and it should be ready to roll. You may have to close and reopen it to get it to sink up with the compatibility pack. I can't remember. But again, I've never had to do anything else to get Jarte to work. Re: Selecting text with thunderbird
The F8 method only works when in browse mode. So when viewing a message in browse mode you need to use it. When writing a message you have to use the standard shifted keys method. When in browse mode and on a link just press home to go to the beginning and then F8 twice. this will select the entire link. When you have the text of a link but it doesn't register as a link, or whenever you want to select a line, home to the beginning, F8, end to the end, F8, and you've selected and copied that line. Re: Going Backward in Accessibility?
Hi there GUYS! When the ribbin was first introduced I wanted nothing to do with it. Now it is just a part of my everyday computing and I never give it a second thought unless there is something there which I cannot find. My first PC was an old xp then a 286 then a 486 all runnig various versions of DOS. I really didn't wish to switch to windows, but my buddy that was helping me with computers simply brought over a win 98 system and I started using it. My first Windows screen reader was VinVision and I really liked the ease of use with that software. Of course when I went to XP I had to switch to Window Eyes which I have kep since then. I went from 98 to XP to Win 7 then Win 10 and I found it to be a rather easy trip. Maybe the facth that I have a lot of technical friends that I can call on when I have a question most certainly helps! Anyhow, just a bit of personal computing history. Catch Ya All Later! de . RE: Alternative Interface?
Hi Dave, Some interesting points. NoteTab Pro, http://www.notetab.com has accessibility settings, so some programs do this. All the best Steve -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+steve=comproom.co...@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Dave via Talk Sent: 15 January 2017 22:36 To: A I Squared SupportSubject: Alternative Interface? When it comes to making items accessible. When it comes to software, for years, I have wondered why a Software Company could not have two interfaces, one for the Sighted world, and one for the blind, that use screen readers. And the choosing of which interface to use can be done the first time the software runs, or at any time after. I am a Musician that plays guitar and some Keyboard. As Sonar became more and more complex, it seemed as if the accessibility shrank and shrank until the last three or four editions are almost useless to someone using a screen reader. JAWS seems to be a bit further ahead, when it comes to Scripts but even then, I don't know if they have done anything for reading any edition of Sonar past 8.X. There are software based Synthesizers, that are quite powerful that are for the most part off limits to someone using a screen reader. Addictive Drums is a software package that simulates Drums, all kinds of drums. Everything from the old time drum kits from the 1920's to the ultra modern Hip-Hop electronic drums sounds. Loads of drum styles, and I start Drooling when I think of what I could do to improve the sound of my recordings, if only I had access to this Addictive Drum software package. But, last I checked, it isn't a package that is all that accessible. Same goes for some software based Guitar Pedal packages. Loads of guitar effects, all customizable to my own tastes and it is all off limits. Screen reader can't read the screens. The one I wanted is absolutely silent. And for those you who think I am whining, think again. Please don't insult me because I point out an area that I wish was available to me and others. I wondered if it would be possible to have a second main screen, this one friendly to screen readers etc. How much would it cost the Company to add such a screen? Don't know. Don't know how much effort it would take to make such a screen. I dream of such screens for all of the software that I find less than friendly to screen reader usage. What if it took another week or two of development, or even another month of development time. Would you pay another $100 extra to have such a accessible screen? I know I would. Companies that make an attempt to make their software Screen Reader Friendly, seem to make the attempt to making their main screens accessible. have no idea if they have ever considered making an alternative screen for their programs use by the Blind. Today when pricing is so competitive, and Companies are striving to be the cheapest, even if it is by a Dollar or two under their competitors product, I don't know how willing some company would be to add a Screen Reader friendly interface, if doing that will cause their products price to rise by $100. I don't read a lot of complaints about the ribbon any more in the general press although I suppose there are complaints out there yet. So why was the change to the ribbon difficult for us? The ribbon has pretty much always been accessible in a technical sense. In my opinion, it is because our greatest efficiency is achieved by our memory and our ability to repeat a sequence of actions reliably. When confronted with the ribbon rather than a typical menu system, our method of finding an item is to use the navigation that is built into Office to examine the ribbon sequentially. If that navigation is sluggish, it will slow our ability even beyond what we are already experiencing because of needing to look sequentially. Therefore, even when accessibility is implemented, we depend upon more levels of the software, operating system and specific software, to get the information we need. In addition, we are needing to access information sequentially rather than being able to take the shortest path to the desired item as can be done visually with the mouse. We do get around all this in time by learning keyboard shortcuts and accellerator keys. As a rule, though, keyboard shortcuts and accellerators are assigned to some degree by their locations in menus and ribbons. In menus, there were generally two keystrokes involved, the first to get to the pulldown and the

There is a minor problem. After the download completes, you are asked to allow Windows to install this program. Re: first time, ever!
We apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you, but assure you we are doing everything possible to rectify this matter as soon as possible. To minimize downtime, we encourage you to update your software as soon as possible. If you have questions or require assistance resolving this problem, contact the Ai Squared support team at (727) 803-8600 option 2 or mailto:supp...@aisquared.com. As some of you may have already noticed, we just released English Window-Eyes 9.5.4 this morning (January 18th). Other languages will soon follow. It is very important if you are using Window-Eyes 9.5.1 or 9.5.2 or 9.5.3 that you upgrade to 9.5.4 before the digital certificate described above is revoked. There are 3 changes from version 9.5.3 to 9.5.4: 1) Support has been added for the HumanWare BrailleNote Touch braille display. 2) An issue where multiple hooking errors would occur in the latest testing builds (insider build) of Windows 10 has been fixed. 3) An updated digital certificate has been used to sign all executables. (as per the description above) Again, it is critical you upgrade your copy of Window-Eyes 9.5.1 or 9.5.2 or 9.5.3 to 9.5.4 immediately. Once the certificate is revoke these copies of Window-Eyes will no longer launch leaving you without speech and/or braille. Re: Going Backward in Accessibility?
One thing, in Becky if you wish read-to-end to work again, you can change, under general settings, the third page of options, (message view), the HTML option that "convert to plain text, to use, instead, the IE5 view which is the second from the top of 3 radio buttons. Then your read-to-end keys are the same as those you'd use in Internet explorer of which it is using one of the components of. Other advantages are easier clicking on links in HTML email messages, but, there are disadvantages as well, though you can as easily turn it off and go back to "convert to plain text" as well to get what you have now, back again. Of course, in the normal view of Becky, hitting the space bar to scroll the message 24 or so lines and then hitting control=-shift-d to read the field which I use works too, but auto-read works well when using the html view. That option is about 21 tabs from the start of the "message view" page, or about 10 or so shift-tabs from the other way. :) - Curtis Delzer, HS. Re: Email programs, Your Choice?
I use Becky! because I can go through a lot of mail in a hurry if needed, or even display mail with html formatting using it's ability through IE to properly display it, and the filters work for handling mail into separate mailboxes automatically. - Curtis Delzer, HS. Re: to Curtis from michael about voices.
sorry for not replying Michael, didn't see your message. the voice has some idiosyncrasies, but it works well, and the discount when I bought it was significant. - Curtis Delzer, HS. Re: Selecting text with thunderbird
Yeah if it's only a link, that's the easiest. I occasionally have an issue when there is only one line of text such as a URL without a link. I'd like to avoid having to right arrow through the entire URL. Is there a way to copy the URL without right arrowing?
