[OSM-legal-talk] MoU between OSM and NLSF
Dear Friends, I have prepared with National Land Survey of Finland Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) about usage of their datasets by OpenStreetMap activists. Hare is current draft text for everybody to comment: Memorandum of Understanding This Memorandum of Understanding (hereinafter MoU) is between the National Land Survey of Finland (hereinafter NLSF) and OpenStreetMap contributors (hereinafter OSM). Background NLSF started to use a new Open Data License for their topographic information datasets (hereinafter Data) on 1st of May 2012. NLSFs Open Data License grants a worldwide, free of charge and irrevocable parallel right of use to open data. This MoU clarifies how Data can be used when OSM are collecting data to be part of OpenStreetMap database. Usage of NLSFs data NLSF data can be used at least two (2) ways by OSM: - As reference data: NLSF Data can be used as reference data. For example NLSFs raster maps or aerial photographs can used as source data when OSM databases are digitized, corrected, validated or in any other way. - As import source: NLSF Data can be imported to be an integral part of OpenStreetMap database. Attribution OSM will add NLSFs contribution to OpenStreetMap wiki pages as follows: Finland National Land Survey of Finland Contains data from National Land Survey of Finland Topographic Database and other sources, data extractions started on 05/2012. More specific data sources and data extraction dates are documented as part of data and in OSM wiki pages OSM are preparing guidelines for all OpenStreetMap data collectors on how to include necessary tag-information for the OpenStreetMap data features. Reasons to make this kind of MoU: - Common understanding among OSMers what can and what cannot do with NLSF datasets - Clarify OSMers goals for NLSF when using their datasets Some people may say that we don't even need this kind of MoU. IMHO: maybe it's better to have something than nothing. However, all comments are welcome! Re: [OSM-legal-talk] MoU between OSM and NLSF
The way I see this is: Don't allow the term MOU make you not see The Point of this text and that is a clarification to the license terms. In plain(?) English the Finnish authority says that the OSM community is allowed to use the data _in OSM_ with the articulated clarifications because some in the community have felt that the license is problematic for using this Open Data in OSM. Unless I misunderstand something here it seems to me that regardless of the MOU (that is most usually drafted in collaboration _and_ signed by two parties) the idea here is that the Finnish authority declares one-sidedly (because OSM community is practically impossible to do 2-sided agreements with) that: If you abide to these (super-simple) rules/requirements then you are free as in free speech allowed to use the data. So, find+replace MOU with License clarification and perhaps -- just perhaps-- this seems better? Or am I missing something (again)? Last time I looked at this the 62-series did NOT store the tracks on the micro-SD-card like the 60csx does. It stores the tracks on the 1.7GB internal memory (so yes, this is also quite infinite, but it is not the same, e.g. you can't use an external card-reader to get these tracks). The newer models like the 62series also seem to have an automatic track-compression you cannot turn off (so no raw tracklogs) if I recall right. But after reading a few Garmin manuals and googling around for a while I still haven't found a solid answer to this question: How many trackpoints will the unit store before it begins overwriting old ones or stops collecting new tracklog altogether? Some sources seem to hint that the maximum amount of trackpoints a single GPX file on new Garmins can contain is 10k, good for a bit under 3 hours of tracklog taken with 1 second interval. The maximum number of distinct GPX files archived in the device could be 20, 200 or maybe even unlimited (=limited by free memory on the device) depending on the source. 10k trackpoints times 200 files is 2 million trackpoints or about 23 days of continuous tracklog, which would probably be enough for me. But does the auto-archiving/rotating feature produce tracklog files that are of the assumed 10k maximum size? Can someone confirm that tracklogs automatically archived by newer generation Garmins can contain more than 10k points and/or have had more than 20 or 200 automatically archived GPX files in the device at one time? AFAIK at least the 62series does not store every second a point but instead does some smoothing on the track (i.e. it will contain less points than one per second, but it will probably not be what you want). I don't own a 62series device but a friend of mine does and when I borrowed it I couldn't manage to get raw tracklogs logged, neither to the sd-card nor to the internal memory. Please note that with raw tracklogs I intend positions and timestamps as with the older 60csx, actually these logs are never raw, neither on the older 60csx:, they are always position data calculated from the raw signal by some secret algorithm (you can notice this for instance when entering into a tunnel and the track continues in the former direction for a short time even when there is no reception at all). cheers, Martin ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

For more complex direction dependent restrictions, the postfixes :backward and :forward can be used on the keys, for example: bicycle:backward=no (when a road has a oneway cycleway next to it that must be used, and a cyclelane in the other direction) bicycle:backward=yes (when cyclists are allowed to travel in both directions on a oneway street (but no lane is present)) Gruß Martin ___ Talk-de mailing list Talk-de@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-de

Also: könnt ihr euch beiderseitig hilfreiche Modelle vorstellen?

Bra att du lägger in lite feltolerans.
Potlatch's approach is very much here is some data that you can use to help your mapping, rather than here is some data you can upload in bulk, and the idea is that you load the data as a vector background then pull through the bits you want. So, do dig up an old thread again... is there a way to merge adjoining areas in Potlatch yet? I got a great answer from Adam Dunn on using the JOSM join ways feature. I'd like to be able to do this in Potlatch as it is annoying to have to switch to another editor just to be able to merge these adjoining nodes, and then join the two adjoining areas into a single common area. With the ability to import CanVec directly in Potlatch, having the ability to stitch areas back together right in Potlatch would be nice. I've been searching OSM help, but haven't found the answer yet. One would think that you should be able to simply join the untagged way to the way defining the outer relation, completing the circular way. This should be the simple part, I would assume. The situation where each half of the lake is an outer relation with inner relations would make the process more complex as you would somehow have to make the inner relations on one of the outer relations move over to become inner relations to the other outer relation, while making only one of the outer relations define the whole lake. No. There is no automated process in Potlatch2 that can do a so-called logical union of areas at the moment. The best way to do this right now is manually. The situation where each half of the lake is an outer relation with inner relations would make the process more complex as you would somehow have to make the inner relations on one of the outer relations move over to become inner relations to the other outer relation, while making only one of the outer relations define the whole lake. Having the CanVec data available is excellent, but stitching areas back together where they have been artificially split at a tile boundary is a bit of a bear for me.

Merci. ___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr
