Re: [talk-au] Unauthorised bike trails in national parks
Thanks Steve91 and all who have contributed to this thread. In the end I changed the access tag to horses no bicycles no but left the name unchanged. I referenced these discussions in the change comment. Tony Hi. I'm user Steve91. I did not put the original track in OSM, the changeset that is referenced is to me improving the accuracy of the upper (eastern) section of the track. The upper section of the track has been in existence for over a year or two. And appears to be well used/good condition. I do not know where the name came from. I only map what is on the ground and the way this track is follows what I know as single track mtb. There is no signs stating no access, this is a formed path. As are many others in the area. Even the official ones aren't signed. I strongly discourage the removal of the track as OSM is a map of the world and not the map of parks vic. If it exists then it can be mapped. I don't mind removal of the name, however the original author might. These are just my views, always happy to consider other views.
Hi, I like to create bridges between projects, so now I was looking into the name:etymology:wikidata tag. And I have a question about it. Say, you have a Rue de la Chapelle Rue de la Station I'd be inclined to make it point to the specific instance of chapel or station. The other possibility would be to point to the word/concept of chapel/railway station. As far as I'm concerned, both have merit. There could be somebody who wants to get all the roads named after station/chapel across languages. Or there could be somebody who wants to be more specific and who wants to know which streets are named after a specific 'object'. There are also streets named Parkstraat (5km) apart. Named after Park Abbey. So I think it makes sense to refer to Park Abbey and not the concept (city) park in general. ;-) I'm making a proof-of-concept of a platform to help us welcome new mappers. Joost Schouppe has made this Google Sheet[1] which is awesome but we both agree something better can be built. What the platform currently can do: * import a CSV with the mappers from the Google Sheet (so work we've done there isn't lost!) * request and parse http://resultmaps.neis-one.org/newestosmcountryfeed.php?c=Belgium to detect new mappers * fetch the changesets of new users and determine their primary editor, and if they use iD also their language * show a profile for each new contributor with their number of changesets, picture e.a. (one-page static preview at [2]) * show a list of new contributors (with a summary of their profile) * generate custom welcome messages based on their language and editor What I would like it to do: * store notes for each contributor (and the author of the note) and a description of what they've done (partially present: can only be imported, not yet edited) * maybe store a more elaborate history of the correspondence with a contributor * show some stats * be able to generate potential vandalism messages * be hosted on osm.be I'm not that good at programming and the PHP code's currently a mess :p I would like to start over with some help. Re: [Talk-it] Corretta gestione dei multipoligoni
- Ciao, Aury -- View this message in context: http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/Corretta-gestione-dei-multipoligoni-tp5851271p5851396.html Sent from the Italy General mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Re: [OSM-talk] name:etymology:wikidata
Since all the streets of The Netherlands already made their way into wikidata, I think it's reasonable to add other streets as well and indeed it's possible/desirable to say in wikidata what was named after something else. Wikidata is not Wikipedia, which indeed suffers from the problem that what I'm inclined to add there gets deleted for all sorts of reasons. It can go into wikidata though. What I'm wondering about though, is how to retrieve the data once again. At the moment I added name:etymology:wikidata tags to all the streets referring back to Leuven (a town in Belgium), making sure to add the proper tags for people with Leuven/Louvain in their name. At this point it's easy to create an Overpass API query to find all these streets once again in a convenient way, which I then added to the wikipedia pages about Leuven: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leuven#External_links I have no idea how to go about this when the querying needs to be performed in wikidata itself, then transfered to an Overpass query to fetch the actual streets. That said, I see your point about adding source references for the original research. [Talk-us] Whole-US Garmin Map update - 2015-07-29
These are based off of Lambertus's work here: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl If you have questions or comments about these maps, please feel free to ask. However, please do not send me private mail. The odds are, someone else will have the same questions, and by asking on the talk-us@ list, others can benefit. I wrote scripts to joined them myself to lessen the impact of doing a large join on Lambertus's server. I've also cut them in large longitude swaths that should fit conveniently on removable media. http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/2015-07-29 Can or should I seed the torrents? Yes!! If you use the .torrent files, please seed. That web server is in the UK, and it helps to have some peers on this side of the Atlantic. Why is my map missing small rectangular areas? There have been some missing tiles from Lambertus's map (the red rectangles), I don't see any at the moment, so you may want to update if you had issues with the last set. Why can I not copy the large files to my new SD card? If you buy a new card (especially SDHC), some are FAT16 from the factory. I had to reformat it to let me create a 2GB file. Does your map cover Mexico/Canada? Yes!! I have, for the purposes of this map, annexed Ontario in to the USA. Some areas of North America that are close to the US also just happen to get pulled in to these maps. This might not happen forever, and if you would like your non-US area to get included, let me know. -- Dave ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

Most major routing systems use indeed real time traffic information today, collected by other users of their system and by cellphone networks But for that you need some kind of online connection. And my tablet has only wifi. So that may be practical to use in some cases (phones with a dataplan), you still need a general calculation which is not based on real time traffic info. And for that you can only use general terms with respect to speed and have to accept that the calculation will not be correct all the time. On top of this: I am not aware that OSMAND has this functionality ATM. So talking about this is only hypothetical at the moment. It will not result in better calculation times.
A questão é entender qual o propósito do OSM. É a ideia do crowd-mapping.
Re: [Talk-us] Am I mapping this wrong, or should the router be fixed for this?
On Thu, Jul 30, 2015 at 7:52 AM, Greg Troxel g...@ir.bbn.com wrote: I've been on the osmand list for over a year, and the issue of routing choices similar to yours have come up multiple times. It seems that the views of the osmand developers (who are not very active on the list) are different from the consensus on the list. The issue of on-ramps/off-ramps tagged as *_link has been a particular discussion focus. The notion you expressed that these don't have actual posted limits, just sometimes yellow signs is indeed shared by most in the discussions. And we generally agree that the right speed to use for them is more or less half the speed of the larger road from which the links go to/from. Perhaps half the speed of the actual road, perhaps half the speed of a nominal road of that class, and perhaps slower. But these are fine details, and the consensus is pretty strong. Half the speed of associated major way in _link situations would at least be a rational default averaging out from what I've seen here in Oklahoma (though might be too generous for urban areas, anything that's posted 'LAST EXIT BEFORE TOLL' at rush hour as everyone cheaps out simultaneously). http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:maxspeed:advisory is also a tag we should be using and that osmand should be looking for (but in practice, neither happens). I do not understand why the osmand devleopers don't just implement this notion; it seems relatively obviously correct, and people who have modified their routing.xml files report reasonable results. A few further thoughts: While it's important to tag actual speed limits (posted, or unambiguously determined from local law, such as 30 mph in thickly settled areas in Massachusetts), routers should actually function on typical speeds, not limits. I think osm should have this data, but it gets a bit complicated. planet.gpx, but should go by typical speeds, advised speed, or the legal maxspeed, whichever of those three are lowest (no reason a safe and professional driver in a tall vehicle should get told that they can get there faster than is realistically probable; always better to say it's going to take longer than it will in reality). Still, a simple take on it would help a lot. One could just put in the yellow-sign value as typical. Or perhaps there should be a warning-sign tag, and a typical determined from a number of tracks. (Around me, there's a highway with limit 65 mph, and I'd say typical is 75 mph. Ramps are often yellow-signed at 30 mph and typical is 40mph on some of them.) Sounds very similar to the situation here, even on new sections recently modernized. 3) choosing a function to minimize. Shortest distance and shortest time are both not right, as dangerous maneuvers are avoided by many people even if they save a few seconds. Unless you're basically every cabbie ever. ;o) And then there's avoiding highly bumpy roads. Avoid US, but that may complicate routing for this audience. In 2, there should be a time penalty for u-turns. Really it's not a penalty: it's an estimate of how much time it actually takes, and ideally these times would be extracted from actual tracks so the actual time and the predicted time match in some zero-mean sense. The faster the road, the higher the penalty should be for that, too. Doesn't have to be a U-turn, either, just any hard turn (particularly across traffic (usually left in this country but just about every city's got some funky one-offs where the opposite is true). ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
