As I said yesterday: It's a perfectly reasonable request for someone to ask can I have a map that shows place names displayed in my language / alphabet. It wouldn't be the first time that we argued about what the map should have on it. IMHO, we shouldn't have a map. We should have a list of map peers, each of which is rendered topically, including an English Language map, or a Kannada map. They should be hosted by whomever wants to host them. The only difference is which tile set gets selected. You can edit off all of them, using potlatch or id or remote control. There is a data flag for all of them so you can see data items rendered over the map tiles. And (this is key) there is no default. There is no OSM map. And there is nothing to argue about how the map should be rendered. We'll still argue, of course. But it will be arguments about what goes into the database. Re: [OSM-talk] Attributing others' errors to OSM data and what to do about it. Was: Craigslist OpenStreetMap Rendering Issue
100% true. Consumers don't respect (Polish word szanować beside to respect means something like taking care of a thing, especially if you got it from someone) our data. Most implementations are mediocre to horrible. Main offenses are displaying irrelevant things, very scarce tags support, partial and outright wrong translation of object types, needless exposure of users to OSM data model (eg. directly slapping raw opening_hours on the screen), and no understanding of regional differences in address formats. This sparked an idea in my mind some time ago. If anyone has resources, they could make some sort of library/program (and maybe distribute compiled data products) that does all these software has to... cases, doing eg. access values inference and whatever the user specifies, maybe normalization (conflating tags that mean the same, or abstracting from tags whatsoever - example would be that shops come with shop=* mostly, but some do with amenity=* - or that there are services that are tagged as shop=*) or address/admin preprocessing which apparently is SO tricky (people still often don't understand that addr:place is there...) Doing things once is beneficial, saving work and keeping bugs out. Re: [OSM-talk-nl] BAG vs On-The-Ground
//colin On 2015-05-31 14:11, Johan C wrote: 1. For example, the state legislature or highway department may have assigned a road or bridge a number for accounting purposes. In many cases, the numbers are signposted, but only in fine print on signage or on small signs out of view to most motorists. This tag was most recently discussed on talk-us back in January regarding Pennsylvania's quadrant route system. [2] Here's a real world example of `unsigned_ref`: https://www.flickr.com/photos/dougtone/4176740362/ What you see in this photo is typical signage for Pennsylvania State Route 443 (ref=PA 443); below it is mile marker 210. At the top of that mile marker, in infinitesimal print, is the quadrant route designation SR 3009 (thus unsigned_ref=SR 3009). Most likely, the bridge itself has a reference number carved into either end (unsigned_ref again, I guess). Some other states and counties handle things very differently, avoiding signposting legislative route or bridge numbers at all. But I'd be surprised if someone has actually bothered to import such numbers in large quantity. It was important to avoid putting these numbers in `ref` because renderers and routers alike would immediately present them as ordinary route numbers and probably give laypeople a lot of confusion. (It'd be as if someone had set `name=Londres` for London.) Other than that, the choice of unsigned was just a matter of convenience and plainly a misnomer. Something like `ref:penndot` may've been more appropriate in examples like the one above. Re: [OSM-talk-nl] BAG vs On-The-Ground
//colin On 2015-05-31 14:11, Johan C wrote: 1. Re: [OSM-talk-nl] BAG vs On-The-Ground (Was: Groenlandsekade/Groenlandse Kade, Vinkeveen)
Hi, As mentioned in this thread, the mapping party was last Saturday in Iloilo co-organized by The Asia Foundation and several bike groups (IPAD Xtr, ICYC, iFOLD, Augustinian Cyclists) in the city. Originally, we designed to have an editing session using iD. But since most of them did not bring laptops, mostly on bikes (of course), we focused mapping using SmartPhones installed with OSMAnd. Thanks to Erwin for updating the adding a new section on the new version of OSMAnd in learnosm which I had to review early morning before the event. ;) The good thing with OSMAnd is that you have a lot of options for mapping, the bad thing with OSmAnd is that you have a lot of options for mapping. ;). Anyway, we focused on using OSM plugin to map bike related POIs. There were some crashes on one device and we were not successful getting the plugin to work on iPhones/iOS. All in all, I think OSMAnd is perfect for groups like this. Even if they don't use any of the editor, they can continue contributing by just uploading POIs. There were some issues along the way lsuch as some POIs in the middle of the sea and other with only name tags. We are fixing it now. Re: [Talk-ca] Mapping Toronto's PATH entrances and ways to them
Hey George, I'll work towards improving the way the connections are, but because of the large size of the network, the fact that it's invisible in imagery GPS is useless, and I can only remember so much, it might take some time to make it perfect. It's a bit of a wild west of connections down there and there can be many connections to the surface contained within one city block (8+ in some cases) with a mix of stairs, escalators, and elevators with varying levels of access based around the time of day. 1. Entrances are only mapped sometimes. Currently on OSM it seems that the underground PATH connects directly with the above ground network rather than having an elevator or stairway between the level change. In the latest updates I've made I've added in escalators, elevators, and stairs and connected them to the PATH (level=-1) or the ground level network with an entrance node included on its intersection with the building. One thing I've also noticed is that the PATH footways are marked using layer=-1, not level=-1 - I don't know if this makes a difference to OSRM. 2. I've been linking the entrances with indoor footways that connect to the PATH via elevators and escalators/stairs and then linking the other side of the entrance node to the sidewalks or roads so that it should be able to route between the two networks. If you have any suggestions or comments please tell us. I'm working on a project that uses OpenStreetMap to do some routing. I'm using the OSRM router as a service. We identified a problem with the routing, and the problem does not lie in the router itself. Some routes we try to execute in our software, go underground, into the PATH tunnels. When I try to route between two points inside the PATH, all goes well and the router does it's job just fine. When I'm above ground and try a route that goes underground a few things can happen: 1. OSRM gives me the car route and then traces a direct line to the point; 2. OSRM routes using the PATH; The second only happens when the PATH is connected to the street graph. So, we will be applying a two step routing, to the entrances of the PATH, and from there, to the underground locations, when necessary. When it's above ground above ground, we'll just use a simple routing scheme. My questions are: 1. How are the entrances mapped? Is there any specific tag on OSM that marks them as entrances or that the level is changing (from 0 to -1, for example)? 2. All of these entrances should be connected to the main graph, otherwise they are unreachable from a street or a sidewalk. How can those be mapped? I'm sorry about the lengthy email, but I want to contribute and I do not want to step on any toes. Thanks -- George R. C. [Talk-at] Schulzentrum Graz-Andritz

Totally agree - the oneway(=no) is being misinterpreted. OSM's BIG ISSUE is what to do about others misinterpreting OSM data and attributing the error to OSM. -- Mike. @millomweb https://sites.google.com/site/millomweb/index/introduction - For all your info on Millom and South Copeland via *the area's premier website - * *currently unavailable due to ongoing harassment of me, my family, property pets* TCs https://sites.google.com/site/pmailkeey/e-mail ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Could a plugin be easily developped? Or could a specific presets be used? The ten-map-downloads limitation could get annoying. :/ I agree with you about OsmAnd's having *too many* features - but I'm not complaining. The good news is that the new UI is way better than the old one, and more intuitive.
