Re: [OSM-talk] Abandoned Rails
Wrong data is worse than absent data. Osm has so far only contained current data, so that's what 99.99% of consumers expect to find in it, so historical data is wrong data. That'll remain true as long as osm lacks a good way to store historical data that doesn't confuse the vast majority of users who are looking for current data. I don't think so. Wrong data happens to Bing Maps, to Google Maps and probably to any other map we can obtain, electronically or in a paper. Maps have dates attached to them - or should have, most of the time. The fact is that: if I browse around my city, looking for streets and brindges created in the last fews years, I will see mistakes (as I did before). But it's better to have there what existed, as it was before, than have just an emptyness in the area. Until someone fix it (hopefully) or at least mark it as old, potentially wrong (without deleting until an update is made!). In the context being discussed here, recent changes should also cause data deletion, but that's wrong, in my opinion. Data may be *replaced* with newer data, with everything that's needed. If people are doing something that is fiercely against the community idea of OpenStreetMap, that it could be deleted. But that really seem far from the truth. So that should be preserved, and its deletion, if decided to be made, should give a reasonable opportunity for the data contributors to backup that data - so their work is not lost, but may be used somewhere else. Further, I'm not one of the users that would be confused with that. I would find it unsual to see in a map. But being tagged and noted somehow, should not be a problem at all. And to say the users who would be confused with it are the majority of them, is an vague argument you do just to give some apparent strength to your idea. And I repeat: I would not be confused with it, I don't think the majority of users would be. -- Balaco P. S.: this mailing list does not add a Reply-to header to mail messages, as I'm used to. So I initially sent the answer to just one person. This should be changed - may it not confuse the majority of users!? [OSM-talk-fr] BANO VS OSM
A bientôt ___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr

We might be able to switch to vector tiles somewhere down the line, allowing us to serve more styles easily, but that requires a lot of people willing to do a lot of work ;) I can't believe that I am the only person who is stuck in a sort of no-mans land in relation to OSM. Time is a commodity that is in short supply for many of us, so ideally we want to make the best use of it. What I would prefer to be spending time on IS adding data and while I've a growing backlog of material which I should like to add, much of that relates to historic development of the current data, so CURRENTLY I do not have a crib sheet to follow to add material which substantially relates to current object, but includes elements which may come under the classification 'abandoned railways'. The sections of railway information are only a part of the historic element and includes other objects which are currently being adapted or replaced, and I currently don't see ANY point in migrating random pieces of history to OHM, when the bulk of the context is still on OSM. I can be confident that the material is buried in the change log, but that does not make it usable for rendering, and THAT is the problem here. Just as people can omit 'abandoned railway' tag from their own rendering, 'old road or old building' should also be selectable ... and in my book, all that is missing currently is correct rending of 'start_date' and 'end_date' in conjunction with the historic material such as 'abandoned railway'. Yes I know that end_date is a crude structure as is start_date, but currently they are all that exists to provide a chronology of when objects appeared on the map and in what form. That a base map would only contain object with a current valid start_date and end_date allows new development to be mapped but not yet displayed, and the evolution to that new development still to be maintained in the database. This is more about CURRENT history than adding past events but a solution should cover both. Up until now while the differences between the rendering in various tools was irritating, it was reasonably manageable. I don't see that the current planned change will be reflected in all the tools quickly? And more of a problem, if some tools follow 'old' practices then things will be even more confusing for newcomers? Now I am TRYING to get my head around all of the extra stuff I need to provide a private rendering system and I've just had to do a hard reboot of the server as it froze trying to render a sample picture of where I've got to, so I need something a bit more stable before I can use it in the open. Even with an 8 core processor and 32Gb ram it's struggling with a small extract, but then the UK slice does have a larger volume of data for the area? http://lsces.co.uk/storage/attachments/71/2071/osm-lsces-z11.png should explain partially where I've got to. Shields on the road numbers seem to be inconsistent. Need a few less on some roads, and actually include some on others. The other problem is as you should be able to see the main traffic routs are on secondary roads (yellow here), but a number of key roads are actually tertiary or unclassified and I think I need to actually re-tag them so that the gaps in the routing grid are properly represented. Of cause the hill structure would go to explain a few gaps in that grid ... I'm trying to get self sufficient, but that is simply not an easy job with so many different tools used in the background! -- Lester Caine - G8HFL - Contact - http://lsces.co.uk/wiki/?page=contact L.S.Caine Electronic Services - http://lsces.co.uk EnquirySolve - http://enquirysolve.com/ Model Engineers Digital Workshop - http://medw.co.uk Rainbow Digital Media - http://rainbowdigitalmedia.co.uk ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

On 23/08/2015, Balaco Baco balacob...@imap.cc wrote: I don't think so. Yes, all maps have errors, wether it is outdated data, data that was never right, or missing data. But it's better to have there what existed, as it was before, than have just an emptyness in the area. How so ? Say I'm walking along an old railroad which OSM led me to believe continued for 10km, but is impassable at various points including a wheat field and a housing estate. Or I'm heading to the convenience store only to find it has closed years ago. Outdated data is wrong data, it is misleading and lowers the overall quality of the map. Until someone fix it (hopefully) or at least mark it as old, potentially wrong (without deleting until an update is made!). That's just the normal mapping workflow, nobody is arguing against this. Nobody is proposing to delete first, improve later. We make the best map we can, within the bounds of our knowledge and time constraints. In the context being discussed here, recent changes should also cause data deletion, but that's wrong, in my opinion. Data may be *replaced* with newer data, with everything that's needed. Same thing here, we improve the map as much as we can. But maybe you don't have enough time right now to map everything, or meadows are so far off in your todo list that you never bother with them. But leaving known-outdated data in place just because you can't yet make a fully detailed mapping of the area doen't make sense either. If people are doing something that is fiercely against the community idea of OpenStreetMap, that it could be deleted. But that really seem far from the truth. There are very few rules in OSM, but one of them is that we map on the ground and that we don't map historical features/events http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Good_practice#Map_what.27s_on_the_ground http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Good_practice#Don.27t_map_historic_events_and_historic_features Ways like https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/366610457 (and presumably many other railway=dismantled) fail these checks. So that should be preserved, and its deletion, if decided to be made, should give a reasonable opportunity for the data contributors to backup that data - so their work is not lost, but may be used somewhere else. Yes, giving a heads-up to a mapper when you edit a lot of his work is good etiquette. As for backup, the data is versioned in the db, you can always get the old data back. Since OSM has always had a policy of containing only current data, it stands to reason that the majority of users only expect to find current data in OSM (or rather that anything that isn't current anymore needs to be fixed, and that it was current when it was added to osm). Wether you get confused when stumbling uppon data which violates that rule depends on what you're doing with the data. Remember that interpreting osm data is actually a lot of work. Very few people have the manpower to verify what railroad=dismantled actually mean to decide wheter they want to use or filter out that data. Most of them will just match railway=*, plus perhaps some special cases for railway=rail and railway=subway. Now they're looking at historical data without even knowing it. They are confused. P. S.: this mailing list does not add a Reply-to header to mail messages, as I'm used to. So I initially sent the answer to just one person. Re: [talk-au] Unauthorised bike trails in national parks
Hi all Thanks for the delay while I contacted Parks Vic. Parks Vic have confirmed that Ant Trail is closed to the public for all uses as is the trail at https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/-37.93253/145.30901 stev391 proposed that my edit should be reverted as he says: (1) The track is there and more well defined than other features in the area. (2) OSM is a map of what is in the world, not what copyrighted maps have stated. (3) This is a commonly used mountain bike track, with a recognised name. (4) bicycle=no requires this to be indicated in the real world. Here are my answers to these and other issues raised: (1) The track is there and more well defined than other features in the area. Ant trail is 20cm wide and consists of bare earth where bicycle traffic has killed the vegetation. It is not signposted. Conversely all the designated trails are signposted. The photo that stev391 posted in support is of the intersection of Ant Trail and Abrahams Track. Abrahams track is vehicle width and is formed, that is it was created by earthmoving equipment. Ant Trail is neither signed nor formed (no earthworks). See later in this post for more photos of this intersection. There are no designated trails that are less well defined than Ant Trail. (2) OSM is a map of what is in the world, not what copyrighted maps have stated. There is a lot of information that Ant Trail is closed to cyclists without needing to refer to copyright maps. There are signs at all the main entry points stating that only formed and designated trails can be used and that the use of informal trails is not permitted. All the designated trails are signposted. Ant Trail is not formed, signed or designated. (3) This is a commonly used mountain bike track Is it suggested that common use rather than legal status should determine the access tag? There is no credible dispute to the fact that Parks Vic has the authority to close tracks and impose penalties. This is not like Cyprus, Kosovo or Crimea where the legal authority is disputed. We have unambiguous on ground evidence that all informal trails have no legal access. (4) bicycle=no requires this to be indicated in the real world. Signs at all main entry points to the park specify that trails should be designated and formed and that informal trails should not be used. All the designated tracks are signed. Ant Trail is not formed, designated or signed, it is informal. This is real world indication. (5) If you are not allowed to ride there is a 'no bikes' symbol Yes it does say this. It is obvious that this is badly worded. It is obviously impractical to signpost every informal trail, shortcut and animal track. The no bikes signs are only used on signed and designated walking tracks. Is it suggested that its OK to use informal bush trails up to the point that Parks notices them and puts up a sign? (6) When in doubt, also consider the on the ground rule There is no doubt in this case. Parks Vic is the undisputed responsible authority, this is not disputed territory like Cyprus, Kosovo or Crimea. Parks Vic has declared Ant Trail and other informal trails closed. There is ample evidence on the ground of this. (7) The only 'formed management trail' is the Dargon Track ... Formed means earthworks, eg by a grader, spade or bulldozer but not necessarily graveled. Dargon, Abrahams, Sunset, Lanes tracks all fit this definition. Ant Trail is a worn trail not a formed trail. (8) Both maps on the parks site are out of date and do not show all the signed tracks, let alone the unsigned tracks... Yes the website pdf is dated 2007 and does not show The Aneurism which is a signed and designated bike track. Any unsigned tracks should not be used. The Aneurism is shown on the maps at the Horswood Rd and Hallam North Rd carparks, these signs are a few weeks old. (9) what regulation governs the restriction to ride a bike on an existing trails It is the National Parks Act. It is an offence to use a vehicle in an area not set aside for vehicles. A Bike is included in the definition of vehicle in the National Park Regulations 2013 (10) there is no sign at this intersection of the fire trails I can't view the photo at this link. Where is it? All the intersections I checked were signposted. I propose that Stev391's proposed reversion be disallowed. Re: [OSM-talk] Abandoned Rails
Are you saying if a building gets demolished replaced with a new one, you wouldn't remove the original outline from OSM? I'm saying that simply deleting the original outline, leaving nothing in its place is different than putting the *same quality outline* for the newer building that should be there. And while this new data does not exist, the old one should stay there as it is. It should, at most, be marked with a tag such as end date or demolished or anything similar. Simply deleting it is bad. And to justify the deletion for a currently demolished building is silly and naive: buildings are usually replaced much faster than maps are expected to last, and the work of updating it twice, once for the empty space, dem. building and the future new building outline is better done only one time. Further, in places like OSM, where contributors for the second part cannot even be guaranteed, it should be mandatory to follow guidelines and ideas similar to this one. -- Balaco On Sun, Aug 23, 2015, at 15:03, Dave F. wrote: On 23/08/2015 01:27, Balaco Baco wrote: What we need is a database that already has all the data and simply identify when some small elements of it cease to be current. In OSM we do that by deleting the small elements ;) I'm sorry. But this is just a stupid thing to do.
