[Talk-us] Strange edits in area I'm working on
In the last couple of days some very strange new edits have been occurringright in the area I have been working on. https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit?editor=potlatch2#map=19/39.69619/-104.90209 39.69619, -104.90209 Greentree Village Apartments, Denver, CO 1. A couple of days ago these untagged nodes started showing up, in this part of Denver at least. To see them of course you would have to start editing as they don't get rendered. Checking the Historyof a few, I found that they were created on the 8th of April by user Victoria1901, a new mapper sinceMarch 13, 2018. I sent the user a message asking about this and saying that this is not a proper way ofmapping; apparently they were "adding parking". But many of these nodes' locations don't even makesense, some being on primary arterials such as South Parker Road, which have NO parking. I have deletedmany of these nodes, but most are still there. 2. Today I discovered that another user, nakamuraa, also a new mapper since April 03, 2018, added serviceroads in Greentree Village apartment complex while I slept, nearly on top of service roads that I added lastnight. Of course I sent nakamuraa a message and hope to get a reply soon. Surely even if the new roads Iadded last night were not yet rendered, at least the mapper would have seen them when they were editing,so why would they map practically on top of what was already there? *** I have thought for a few years that it needs to be maybe not quite so easy to become an OSM mapper. An onlinecourse, requiring a passing grade, should be a minimum. Also, they should probably be assigned an experiencedmapper as a temporary mentor who would help them get going and check their work for a while. *** 3. I have also noticed in some locations that duplicate buildings exist. For example, today I saw perhaps 2 dozenor so buildings (mapped as building=yes with no other tags but should have been building=terrace) in a townhouse development in Alexandria, Virginia, near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Bernard Street, just south of Slaters Lane. I have seen this kind of thing before in other places. I am assuming that these buildings are from an import that was mistakenly done twice. In Potlatch white circles appear over the nodes in the ways that have the same exact coordinates, so they're easy to spot and delete. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
[Talk-us] Recent Aerial Photo Imagery Changes
Fellow mappers, So what's up with the recent changes in our aerial photo imagery? It used to be so simple and I followed the rule(?) of making sure featuresline up with Bing imagery. I'm wondering about that now - big time.I have been mapping in a variety of locations lately and the situation isdifferent in each location. In Minnesota, for instance, I really don't wantto use Bing imagery unless at some zoom level it shows me the mostcurrent images (especially in high growth areas like northwest Rochester). And when recently updating an intersection in southwest Minnesota to anew roundabout, I was aghast at what Bing was giving me and so only usedit where the quality/resolution "wasn't TOO bad". Sad. Mapbox, ESRI andother imagery were all much better choices, especially between Blomkestand Hutchinson, MN. So the main question now is: Does the "line up with Bing" rule still stand? In recent work around the city of Virginia, Minnesota (re-routing of US 53)I felt I had to use Mapbox imagery and so lined up what I could with it ratherthan Bing. In most cases, they matched or were off by only 2 meters or so. I would provide a link to show you the worst area I found (along MN 7 severalmiles east of Blomkest) but Openstreetmap.org seems to be down right now. Re: [Talk-us] Am I mapping this wrong, or should the router be fixed for this?
This issue reminds me of something I saw a lot of recently on OSMin Fort Collins, Colorado. I get the impression that the mapper whodid this editing did it as a way to avoid the problem(s) mentionedregarding routing. When I first saw this peculiar way of mappingtraffic signals, I didn't speak up. I'm glad this finally got me to do so. Instead of placing the traffic_signals key at the intersection nodes ofa dual carriageway (divided highway) intersection with signals, thismapper created redundant nodes on the ways (one-ways) prior tothe intersections (and prior to pedestrian crossings, of course) atthe point where vehicles (by law) must stop for a red signal. Here is just one example of many in Fort Collins: http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/40.55255/-105.07708 David From: talk-us-requ...@openstreetmap.org talk-us-requ...@openstreetmap.org To: talk-us@openstreetmap.org Sent: Monday, July 27, 2015 11:10 AM Subject: Talk-us Digest, Vol 92, Issue 19 Send Talk-us mailing list submissions to talk-us@openstreetmap.org To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to talk-us-requ...@openstreetmap.org You can reach the person managing the list at talk-us-ow...@openstreetmap.org When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than Re: Contents of Talk-us digest... Message-ID: snt146-w850f25cc66803198f1a1a6bf...@phx.gbl Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 I've been normally mapping slip lanes as '_link' highways at intersections since the beginning. However, as most fellow US mappers know, they almost never have 'speed limits' posted for them, and that seems to help cause problems in some routing programs when they give those slip lanes a speed limit higher than the main highway. Anyways, I've been using OSMAnd recently for occasional offline routing on my tablet and have come across weird routing (I'd like to call them 'bugs') at some intersections that have 3+ traffic lights nodes at them because of the roads being divided. Here, OSMAnd routes me onto a slip lane, makes a U-Turn on the side road, and then continues the across the main road to accomplish what a simple 'left turn' could have done [1], all to avoid '1' traffic light node. So, I go report the 'bug' on the OSMAnd Google group [2], and then somebody forwards it to the GitHub site [3]. In the response I get back on GitHub, one of the maintainers of OSMAnd says it's a 'map data' issue and closes it. Claims that in the 'maneuver', since it avoids an extra traffic light node, it's the shortest route, even though it does that funky U-Turn. Say what?! I mean, honestly, if both MapQuest Open OSMR can do that left turn 'normally' without needing to make a funky U-Turn, something has to be wrong in OSMAnd, right?? Sure, there isn't a 'NO U-Turn' sign posted for this maneuver, but still, the routing engine shouldn't be suggesting it since there isn't a 'NO Left Turn' relation there preventing the left turn from McKnight SB to Siebert EB. So, that leads me to my question. Does anybody think I've tagged the intersection incorrectly? This is how I've been tagging intersections like this from since the start, and I know most other US mappers have been doing the same. Or should I start adding 'false' U-Turn restrictions to prevent the routing bugs and then be called out as 'tagging for the router', or even maybe start putting traffic light nodes at the stop lines for intersections that have both roads divided (and just leave simple one-node intersections as-is)? I'm very curious to see what others have to say about this to see how I'll move forward when I map in the future. Also, don't hesitate to respond at the Google Group post or the GitHub one too as I get the e-mail notifications from them as well. -James [1] - (MapQuest routing, OSMAnd suggestion in [2] link) - https://www.openstreetmap.org/directions?engine=mapquest_carroute=40.53204%2C-80.01073%3B40.53002%2C-80.00614 [2] - https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/osmand/XJ-HVOHhKEM [3] - https://github.com/osmandapp/Osmand/issues/1501 -- next part -- An HTML attachment
[Talk-us] No Parallel/Resize or Copy/Paste in iD editor?
I'm a long-time user of Potlatch. Every time since the newiD editor was introduced that I have tried to use it, I have hadto give up and go back to Potlatch. At first it was simply way tooslow. It seems to perform better, speed-wise anyway, now. I usedto use JOSM to work on the buildings of apartment complexes, untilJava stopped working on my computer (still a big mystery with no fix).I heard recently that a new Rotate feature was added in iD, so I decidedto give iD yet another try. I see the Rotate tool - nice. However, I don'tsee any way to create parallel features (or Copy and Paste as in JOSM).This would be necessary for my purposes, where most buildings in anapartment complex are identical but oriented differently. I would like tobe able to not only rotate a polygon, but copy and paste and then rotatethe pasted polygon and move it to its correct location. I don't see any wayto do that. Is there a hidden way of doing this, such as hot keys? Be seeing you, David J.
