Re: [talk-ph] video mapping
I personally use a GPS - enabled camera in video mode to which it syncs via GPS time. While the GPX trace generated by the GPS device is on of course on GPS time as well making them synchronized. Question: how do you get the timing of the video and GPX to sychronise? For a start you'd have to make sure the video recording device and the gpx recording device had their time set the same. Do you sync them up just by switching them on at the same time, or is there a way to embed the time in the video? GPX has time information included of course. 2013/9/27 Marc Gemis marc.ge...@gmail.com I'll be there. Great But I'm still confused about the goals of the meeting. good questions Marc. Here are my goals, which I hope will meet the ones of many of you : 1/ meet in person many Belgian mappers and active members of the Belgian OSM mailing list. I know many of you by names and actions, but I have not had the opportunity for such an important direct relation, that I find very usesul for developping further mutual respect, trust why not friendship, or professional relations. Thanks to RMLL2013 in Brussels, I have met Jo and Ben. This eases, at least for me, the exchange we have now still by email mostly. 2/ discuss in person, which is sometimes more efficient, some of the projects we have discussed on this list and if possible, move some a little further, and take some decisions. 3/ allow new members of the OSM community at large to meet some of us, and get quickly and easily on board. For example, a leading person for ULB, using more and more free software (in the communication, TV and radio world, with students), Philippe Delchambre in cc. wrote many times to this list, asking for help to start mapping. I haven't been able to work a useful cartoparty with Philippe so far, as I had hoped, nor simply to get enough time to show him how to begin mapping. I would like to give an oppotunity for Philippe to 3.1/ come and meet us, 3.2/ have a good reason to come and meet us, for himself, 3.3/ quickly get the basis on how to map for pleasure and interest, 4/ provide an opportunity for members of the official government data providers to easily meet the active OSM community. Eg: I have invited people working at Cirb who have developped and provided Urbis to come and attend the meeting. The location, ESI, is really effective for that. It is located less than 500 m from Cirb main offices. 5/ involve the school where I teach, ESI, a school where we educate computer scientists, more and more with free software tools and methods, and allow the colleagues and students to meet the community easily. Is this a presentation of OSM to a wider audience ? yes If so, why will we discuss the internal organisation to run an OSM website. This is something that has to take place behind closed doors. indeed I would group all presentations about OSM together time-wise and after that's done, the insiders can stay and discuss stuff this is what I tried to propose as a schedule. Please do not hesitate to swap elements to better reach that goal. such as * Do we need a VZW/ASBL to support this? , * Discussion around the Open data Wallonia hackathon * contacts with administrations or press We do not need an audience for that, do we ? no. My proposal is that such topics be discussed, as you propose, in a seconde phase at ESI and later at the restaurant, which ever is the most convenient. Is many wants, we could ask for sandwiches / pizzas to be delivered at the school where we can access the cafetaria. As for the presentations, if no one else (of the more experienced presenters/mappers) volunteers, I can give a presentation/demo on JOSM. please do. I'll let you add your name and your proposal for the details of the presentation to the pad page. Assuming the audience is not familiar with mapping I thought of the following outline - what is mapping (showing a sketch of a map as we used to do a long time ago) - add a restaurant node in ID - switch to JOSM (I'm much more familiar with it) - Use GPX track + waypoints - Use some presets to show JOSM can be easy as well - some the usage of other data sources, e.g. data of De Lijn (from DB), VMM (from Excel), Monuments from Wikipedia (via small Python script) - simple turn restriction relation (to show it's not all nodes and lines) I like very much this list of topics. or do you want to focus more on 1 topic e.g. adding house numbers ? that woulf be for another time ... or could be the answer to some questions, depending on the time it takes. as for the nice maps, besides good examples, I also think of different renderings to show the richness of the data - main OSM site with the different styles to get started (of Brussels to show work on Urbis ?) +1 especially with Urbis as members of the Cirb urbis team will be present. I would love that they develop closer relations with the OSM community, and that the relation and exchange of data become bidirectionnal ( OSM = Urbis, and not only Urbis = OSM) - OpenLinkMap to show the hyperlinks and opening hours +1 - hike bike map to show the work on walking network - OpenSnowMap - Gesichtskarte (Lier, Mechelen or Antwerpen) - Perhaps some maps from ITO ? - Some examples from Best of the Map (http://bestofosm.org/) all are very interesting.
[Talk-GB] Fwd: National speed limit changes
I have just noticed that this response went only to Andy. Forwarding to to the list now. Peter On 24 September 2013 14:26, SomeoneElse li...@mail.atownsend.org.uk wrote: Hi Peter, Thanks for replying here. Peter Miller wrote: So...on the basis that we should tag what is there, we see a white sign with a black diagonal line on it then that is what we should indicate. We do of course interpret that by putting what we believe if the correct legal speed limit in maxspeed. As such a single carriageway national limit is coded as maxspeed:type=gb:national,maxspeed=60 mph. As dual carriageway is tagged as maxspeed:type=gb:national,maxspeed=70 mph. The motorway version is highway=motorway,maxspeed:type=gb:national,maxspeed=70 mph. I understand the potential problem (does a national speed limit dual carriageway slip road count as a dual carriageway or not?) but am concerned that changing e.g. GB:nsl_single to gb:national will: o potentially obscure any underlying data errors (imagine something tagged maxspeed=70 mph, maxspeed:type=GB:nsl_single) o make things more difficult for data consumers (if only by changing the data from something that they might be expecting) o confuse new mappers who see data that they've entered being changed because it's wrong, when in reality there really isn't a concensus on this. I fully accept that national speed limit tagging in the UK is a mess (at the time of writing 4 of the top 6 values for http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org.uk/keys/maxspeed:type#values could mean the same thing) but any consolidation must proceed following discussion. Sure, and I am politely inviting people to discuss the subject now and am suggesting that it makes a lot of sense to consolidate around a tag value which describes what one sees in front of one on the ground, ie a black and white sign. To be clear I in the habit of using the nsl_single and nsl_dual format until PinkDuck politely pointed out that I was tagging some slip-road etc incorrectly and we agreed that is made more sense to avoid the confusion in the first place and use the simpler gb:national. With regard to the other point: For avoidance of doubt, all my edits have been fully manual. I don't believe that anyone has suggested otherwise I was responding to Roberts comment above that I certainly don't think there has been any discussion of or agreement for a mass mechanical edit to change existing values. although I have certainly suggested that you may not have visited all of the places that you have been changing the speed limit for. There is clearly a sliding scale between I've surveyed an area, and everything that I've edited is based on the results of that survey, aided by e.g. Bing, OSSV, and other named sources and I've changed a bunch of tags worldwide based on who knows what information without even looking where I've changed them. The wiki's mechanical edit policyhttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mechanical_Edit_Policy (as currently written) suggests that changes of this type may be covered (search-and-replace operations using an editor... unless your changes are backed up by knowledge or survey) - I guess that it depends on what you mean by knowledge **. Clearly no-one's going to object to some tag-changing edits (designation=public_fooptath to designation=public_footpath for example) but in this case there's enough doubt - other mappers have said I think the changes should reverted and This tag is vital in the replies to my original mail. Based on that, where you've changed e.g. GB:nsl_single to gb:national would it be possible for you to revert your changes? There's clearly a discussion to be had going forward about which one of GB:blah, UK:blah, gb:blah and uk:blah we need to keep, but based on the replies so far there doesn't appear to be a concensus to support merging of everything into gb:national. I don't hear a clamoring for such a reversion, and indeed I don't think anyone in OSM is sufficiently knowledgeable able the law to say for sure which tag should be used in all cases as I have indicated above. We maintain a vast array of GIS data used for land management, emergency management, and public works programs. Baltimore County covers nearly 700 square miles and has about 800,000 denizens. Today that data is available to download (and perhaps integrate into OSM). http://www.baltimorecountymd.gov/Agencies/infotech/GIS/index.html I have also put some of our data into some repositories on GitHub, which you can also see right now (https://github.com/baltimorecounty). In particular to OSM interests, I want to point out the AddressPoints repo (https://github.com/baltimorecounty/address-points), just a snippet of the dataset, which is very accurate as it used by our 911 center. We have several full time staff that maintain that data daily. That data is also available in full from the FTP source above. I would like to get the conversation started about how some of this data might be worth importing to OSM. There is very little mapping activity in the rural areas of the county, and while many buildings have been added, address coverage is low. There are many other possibilities here, like converting centerlines to an imagery layer for improving existing roads, and plat boundaries for tagging landuse areas in OSM. We also have hard drives and intranet folders full of orthoimagery that is available upon request. Some dates back to the 1930s. Regarding licenses and the legal aspects of the data. Baltimore County asserts that the data is to be released into the public domain. They make no claims for any kind of license or attribution, but there is a standard accuracy disclaimer. I have been pushing for a specific license declaration like ODbL but so far there hasn't been any movement there. If anyone wants to help with that effort, let me know. Finally, I want to thank Josh Doe and Ian Dees for getting the Maryland State Orthoimagery map service proxied by osm.us (http://osm.us) so that folks may use it in their JOSM sessions! http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Foundation/Local_Chapters/United_States/Servers/Imagery This is excellent data from 2011, leaf-off, 6 inch orthophotography. Alex, We definitely have buildings, updated as of 2011. We use them for the stormwater remediation fee AKA Rain Tax. I'd like to figure out how to combine them with buildings (or not) and convert the abbreviated addresses to full. We can talk about that more on imports. As for the public domain thing, I don't think we have it on the website, but it is (or should) be in the metadata. I will work on getting it written onto the website. To view the disclaimer go to this linkhttp://www.baltimorecountymd.gov/Agencies/infotech/GIS/datadownload.htmland click FTP Site, which opens up the disclaimer in a javascript window (I think).
