OSMF Japan (the local Japanese chapter) has already contacted the writer as
well as the interviewed person and I think there will be an appropriate
update/correction of the statement.

Anyway, it's just a matter of time until OSM will be the reference map in
Japan. We're working on it ;-)

Hi Japanese mappers,

Anyone knows Mr. Yamagishi, so we can ask him?
Would be interesting to ask him how he knows that OSM data is used by Apple.
I mean, he's claiming this in an international newspaper, so he should be
able to proof what he says.
Otherwise he will probably tell this wrong information also to customers
and wherever else.

Well, the list of map data sources is very long. And it's not correct to
guess the data that is wrong is the data from OSM without being able to
proof this statement.
Furthermore I don't believe, that the old OSM data of Japan was really
wrong. It was just not so complete a few years ago: incomplete != wrong.
Right?

Just what I don't understand is, how Apple can use OSM data together with
so many other data sources without having license problems.

Thank you for your comment!
I have to say sorry to write in English, but of course everyone can answer
in Japanese ;-)

The design document is rather technical, and it mostly about rendering
labels separate from the features in different layers as you say.
I think multilingual maps is one of the interesting things OSM can
provide. But it's important that mappers know about this and tag correctly.

It's a discussion in many countries how to do name: tags correctly.
In Japan many people use name: Kanji ( Romaji ), which is not 100%
correct in my opinion.
But we do this to get a nice map output on openstreetmap.org ;-)

With support for multilingual maps it's important that mappers know about
this feature and use name:lang tags correctly, I think.
Then we can create much better maps.

Maybe one more comment, because my own text sounds like it's the mappers
fault to use the name tag wrong.
But that's not true!

I think that currently tagging names for Japanese is 面倒くさい ;-)
So we probably need better software to make it easier for Japanese mappers
to do it correctly.

Maybe that's something OSMF Japan can support, for example with a contest
and scholarship for students to develop a better name tagging tool for
Japan.

I think Japanese names are a good example how complex name tags can be, see:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Japan_tagging#Names

There are altogether listed 5 tags for a name: name:ja_rm or name:en are
what you can read without knowing Japanese characters.
name:ja_rm is probably what will not be rendered usually, but this would be
the name written for example on street signs as name in latin characters.
name:ja_kana is what was mentioned in a previous email, because it helps
Japanese people to know the reading of a name. It's also useful for
geocoding.

I don't think it's a simple task to decide from the unicode representation
of osm tags about the character set of the country, as it's not encoded

name:en might additionally not be what we want internationally.
Let's take Beijing as an example:
- it's something in chinese glyphs as a local name (and I'm not sure, if

- in Germany it's called Peking, which originates in south china

- Gaeilge language uses Béising
- Italians use Pechino

In this case English seems to use the right transcription Beijing, but
I'm sure there are other cases, where English (or at least British English)
uses a more customized version, e.g. from colonialism.

I don't know if the renderingrules allow such a decision to make. After
all, the renderingrules decide how the map looks like, and I can understand
if countries that do not use latin script want to render a latin-clean
map.
And: do not tag for the renderer. Entering names twice is tagging for the
renderer.

Your GSoC idea might eventually fit to the pgRouting project (
http://www.pgrouting.org/), which also participates in GSoC as part of
OSGeo as a mentoring organization:

pgRouting had one GSoC project last year implementing time-dependent
shortest path algorithm. An algorithm that takes into account the network
condition at the time it reaches a link in the network. The library is not
only about routing but open to any kind of network analysis, like  flow
algorithms would be something I'd like to see.

As Graham said, your proposal has only a small OSM part. But of course you
can make use of OSM data for a reference implementation.

I had to force a shutdown of the virtual machine. Normal reboot didn't
work. But after starting it again it works now.
Maybe someone has an idea where to find the right lines in the log
describing the problem?

[OSM-ja] Tile Renderer with 5 commands

Hi everyone,

Just reading s post on the German mailing list, that I think is worth to
spread:

So for everyone interested in running an own tile renderer and couldn't so
far manage to set it up, Kai is trying to make this as easy as setting up an
OpenLayers map.
The announcement on the German list was supposed to be a call for testing of
a initial version. All you need currently is Ubuntu 11.04 and then run these
commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kakrueger/openstreetmap
sudo apt-get update  sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-tile
wget http://download.geofabrik.de/osm/europe/germany/rheinland-pfalz.osm.pbf
osm2pgsql -C 1500 rheinland-pfalz.osm.pbf
sudo /etc/init.d/renderd restart

Then you should be able to access tiles at http://localhost/osm/0/0/0.png
Pretty cool, I think. It's still installing while writing this post, so
let's see how it works.

How did you count them? Which tags?
In Japan so called convenience stores are almost everywhere.
Though I think not a lot of shops and other buildings have been mapped in
Japan before.

can't read what's written on Japanese websites.
Some convenient tool, that is easy to install as extension for Chrome is
called rikaikun:

It helps a lot to translate city names for example or small paragraphs,
probably not complete websites (and no flash and images).

Otherwise don't hesitate to ask in English on the OSM talk-ja mailing list
or in IRC (irc.oftc.net #sinsai-info).
Even if the people there mainly use Japanese, there will be someone
to answer your questions or help with translations.

I think it's a bit difficult for Peter and other foreigners to navigate
there, because it's all in Japanese.
But it might be a good idea to create a called Book (Drupal terms) or
Category to publish such a newsletter there.

It's important IMO to compress the amount of new information to have quick
access to the latest news from several sources.
because I'm more an IT person than a writer, there are probably people who
have some experience or advice.

I would like to organize my thoughts and prioritize tasks I can help
on recent OSM-J work with people around Seattle. I know many people in
Japan working hard to update OSM but can some of OSM-J leaders can
sort out what kind of task they want to get done and let us know in
English? I know Furuhashi-san and Seino-san but they must have too
much work. Is there any other person I can talk to about current OSM
priorities?

I am little bit confused about which remote sensing data I can use for
OSM mapping. Can we use air photo's Chiriin took after the disaster?

I think it's impossible to avoid duplicate work. Mostly due to the
language
barrier.
Since Sunday I'm logging the IRC channel(s) of the OSM community. It was
increased to three channels, because the traffic was too high. And still
the
logs are long. Always there are about 50 people on each

I think one important point for OSM and OSGeo communities is, that data
is
really freely available to be possible to be published and processed by
the

Today I received two or three notifications about problems in the Hetzner
network. Maybe this was the reason.
If necessary I can increase the memory of the Virtual Machine.
