What's SAN? (was: Let's Talk about the Next version)

2002-06-27 Thread Peter Palmreuther

Hello Thomas,

On Thursday, June 27, 2002 at 6:17:00 AM you [TF] wrote (at least in
part):

TF What is SAN Storage Disk?

'Storage Area Network' in opposition to 'NAS' = 'Network attached
Storage'.

The former is a (part of a) network that provides a lot of storage
space.
It'S not connected as 'hard disk' or something similar, but really as
'Network intended to move data to'.
It's usually connected via really high speed, like fibre optics
or other giga bit connections.

The latter is a storage solution, connected to hosts _via network_ but
using ISCSI (IIRC) and similar methods for the hosts storing
'remotely'. Imagine it as a 'hard disk accessible through network'.

Both methods are used to provide external storage space, often shared
by several hosts.
But while the former usually is a complex of several machines and
RAIDs, connected, maintained with internal mechanisms the latter
usually is one or more RAIDs, accessed by the hosts as 'RAID storage'.
Means: with NAS the host has (a bit) to care, where and how to store
data, while with 'SAN' you just put it 'there' (strongly simplified).

Hello Tony,

I personally think all the bugs should be ironed out and existing
features such as MAPI should be got working properly before adding
 anything new.

I agree with you here.

As someone else mentioned on the list, I have a use for MAPI but I
can only use OE or Eudora for it, it just will not work with TB.

Guess who! ;-)

I tried Becky and find it to be an interesting, functional client.

My main problem with it is that I can't browse multiple folders
concurrently. This limitation affects me like a brick wall. It just
gets in my way and was the reason why I stopped testing it.

The filtering is limited though most would be satisfied with it's
current capabilities. I've been spoilt though and enjoy TB!'s superior
filtering.

Becky's editor is more contemporary and more functional than most
Windows based e-mail client editors. I, however, *much* prefer TB!'s.
I think TB!'s current editor is more suited to e-mail composing than
most contemporary editors.

Becky just strikes me as a shadow of TB! (though not a fleeting one).
Each major feature or design that is meaningful to me is similar but
not as advanced as TB!'s. So Becky is certainly not rubbish. It's just
not as powerful as TB!.

Hello Miguel

Hopefully Definative answer..
TB! uses simple MAPI.. used where the entire command can be specified
on a single command line/URL. With office 97 products Send To mail
recipient works just fine. Send to routing recipient FAILS.

This is because routing uses the address book / name resolution
facility with is only part of full MAPI. When using Outlook etc which
do support full MAPI, then they can invoke the address book an
initiate name resolution. All this requires user interaction.. which
isn't specified in simple mapi

A simple mapi client is fully function if it understands something
like: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Subject=TestBody=Hello%20World
(as TB! can)

Winfax expects full MAPI, as it tries to invoke the full MAPI spec
address book functionality to resolve names to fax numbers etc

I hope this helps.
