Ok, now for some good news:

 - mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
   TB sys-tray icon functionality:
TB main window is open (leave it open).
Select another program from taskbar (like windows explorer):
After doing so you need to click (LMB) the sys-tray icon twice to get
the TB main window on top again (i.e. TB is first minimised, then
   restored on top)

Not fixed here!

GPGrelay

2005-04-14 Thread Henk de Bruijn
Hi all,

Next to the Bat! I use GnuPG 1.4.1, GPGshell 3.41 and GPGrelay v0.959
When I start the Bat! I regularly get an AV from GPGrelay.
After restarting GPGrelay there are no problems anymore
I also use maildispatcher at startup and during the further session.
The problems happen since the last 2 betaversions.

I have no idea what causes the conflict.

Can anyone confirm?

Well, as a sample of one, I've given up on TB. IMAP operation is a
disaster - and the prog seems to be going backwards in this area. It's so
slow and unreliable here as to be just unusable - I really don't understand
why Mulberry, OE, Thunderbird and Outlook all perform to a good to
excellent standard and TheBat acts like the earliest possible concept alpha
(even on released versions).

Now and again I install the latest beta and then lose patience and shut the
prog down for a few more weeks. With v4 of Mulberry nearly ready and
Thunderbird getting better it's unlikely that TheBat! will stay on my
system for much longer.

PS for all POP users out there, I think TheBat! is unsurpassed for this
protocol!

IMAP operation is a
disaster - and the prog seems to be going backwards in this area. It's
so slow and unreliable here as to be just unusable - I really don't
understand why Mulberry, OE, Thunderbird and Outlook all perform to a
good to excellent standard and TheBat acts like the earliest possible
concept alpha (even on released versions).
This has been my impression, too. It seems as though every new
version fixes a few things and breaks more.

Now and again I install the latest beta and then lose patience and shut
the prog down for a few more weeks.
Exactly my experience, as well, but it's stretched into months at
this point. Every time I install a new version, I experience some
initial excitement and then suddenly it becomes unusable again.

With v4 of Mulberry nearly ready and
Thunderbird getting better it's unlikely that TheBat! will stay on my
system for much longer.
I've reached just about the same point. I'm ready to start
testing the Mulberry beta. I'm not ready to uninstall TB! (I have
too much of an investment in time and money in it to completely
give up), but I think I'll restrict myself to testing major
releases only--unless and until IMAP begins working properly
(although there hasn't been a big difference between betas and
released versions lately).

PS for all POP users out there, I think TheBat! is unsurpassed for this
protocol!
Agreed. I've almost found myself wishing lately that I hadn't
switched to IMAP, but I can never go back to POP3.

It's looking more and more like it's going to be impossible for
RIT to continue to patch a POP3 client and eventually create a
successful IMAP client. Not only is it unreliable, but there are
still important IMAP features missing (such as labels), and there
appears to be no interest in adding them.

Good luck to you.

Re: An error occurred while reading the message base (IMAP)

Hi Peter,
  On 14/04/2005 07:32 PM +0200, you wrote:

I will start beta testing again.
This is my current position, though this position may be worsening as I
get more acquainted, through Mulberry, with what a fully functional and
implemented IMAP protocol can offer. TB! has some way to go.

When (if?) TB! grows better with IMAP, I want to move all my accounts
to IMAP but I dare not at the moment. But for me TB! is more
important than IMAP - for me Mulberry and Thunderbird are not an
option due to missing functionalities: macros, RegExp, etc.
For me, my fundamental wish is that the protocol works reliably and
robustly, in that it works well across different environments. It's
more than a little frustrating using TB! at home while using another
client elsewhere. You wish your clients to be equally capable in terms
of protocol handling so that you can really spread your wings with it
and not be in limbo doing the basics and hoping on and on and on and on
that things will get better. What doesn't help that hope is that when
comments are made about quirky or flaky implementation of a feature,
we're told that there are limitations based on the POP3 base TB! is
built on.

To work with a beta and tolerate the shortcomings, I have to see a
bright future. I used to have faith that there was one, but now I
don't. Though changes have been made, the overall progress has been
very slow for the last several months since attempts to fix one problem
brings on other problems/issues. There's this constant grappling with
basic efficiency with mail retrieval/reading etc.

My basic problems:
A properly functioning outbox that will work as a draft folder. You can
keep unfinished mail there without problems. A couple claiming they
have no problems with the current situation doesn't help.

Labelling needs to be implemented. I can easily label messages as
important etc. and expect to retain these labels across locations.

Performance despite having multiple connections support is still
disappointingly poor. It's faster, but still not good enough. I found
myself pruning folders down just to accommodate this. I shouldn't have
to be doing this. The way to solve this is having the ability to
retrieve only a set quantity of the most recent messages from each
folder. With this ability, Mulberry is the fastest solution I've used
with my connection at work. It works better even though it doesn't keep
a cache between restarts. Another method of efficient bandwidth use is
the downloading of only that much information as is needed per message.
You select a message, and only the message body is downloaded. You
select an attachment for viewing and only that attachment and no other
attachments in the message is downloaded. I'm enjoying being able to
selectively download one among several attachments within a single
message without having to retrieve the rest of the attachments and with
a high degree of reliability.

Filtering needs to be better so that I can easily filter from low
bandwidth locations.

The sound support is flaky. After a long break from TB!, I'll open it
to a cocophony of new message sounds and there are no new messages.
I've already read the new messages from another client!

All I ask for is a debugged protocol with attention to efficiently,
*reliably* and properly operating basic functions. I'm not prepared to
work with quirky implementations that work to some extent or in some
sort of a way thanks to the great efforts behind shoe-horning around
the POP3 code base. I'm not being sarcastic about 'great efforts'
either. I know that there are efforts being made. No doubt about that.

I'm just wondering if TB!'s IMAP will reach a level that would make
want to stick with it for the long haul. I'm seeing a situation of one
having to tolerate mediocre IMAP in exchange for the appeal/lure of the
non-protocol specific features like templates etc.

I've been totally detoxed from the addiction of templates and MicroEd.
That took a long time, but in the end, those are tools to augment the
basic requirement which is the working protocol behind them. For me,
they fade into insignificance without the working protocol. Though they
make some things easier for me, I manage better with better IMAP than
flaky IMAP and the TB! additions. I wasn't managing that well with
ThunderBird, since it lacks too many things. However, Mulberry isn't
bad at all with the other features and since getting accustomed to it,
I'm more settled with e-mail than I've ever been in MANY months since I
have Mulberry working really well at both locations.

I'm still reading the lists and see that there are many issues still
amiss with the new beta that's not protocol specific. I need to see
that pass before rejoining the fray. I also need to have a rekindle of
faith in what TB! IMAP is planned to be like. Otherwise, I will
continue to feel like

Ditto to everything Allie said. Since the advent of v3, I have quit
using TB! altogether as I'm not going to pay another license fee for a
product which has not improved one bit since my previous license fee. I
have followed TBBETA in hopes of someday returning to TB! when IMAP
problems are repaired. However as I've grown more accustomed to TBird
(while it may be lacking in many respects, it does IMAP smoothly and
reliably -- like Allie, that is my priority), I'm beginning to think I
have probably left TB! behind permanently.

Interesting comments about Mulberry, Allie. I tried it once for a while
but didn't feel as comfortable with it as with TBird. Maybe I'll have to
give it another try.

Re: An error occurred while reading the message base (IMAP)

2005-04-14 Thread Peter Fjelsten
Allie,

On 14-04-2005 22:07, you [AM] wrote in
mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:
AM For me, my fundamental wish is that the protocol works reliably and
AM robustly, in that it works well across different environments. It's
AM more than a little frustrating using TB! at home while using another
AM client elsewhere.

As it is now I use 3.0.1.33 at work. I probably get 10-20 mails a day.
For this, that version's IMAP is adequate. It's not good (I have to use
a local outbox, re-select messages with attachments, problems with
bolding of folders and so on), but OK. I am on a very fast connection.
Also to my those of my personal mailboxes I test with IMAP. I believe
you are on a slow connection so your experiences are different.

AM You wish your clients to be equally capable in terms of protocol
AM handling so that you can really spread your wings with it and not be
AM in limbo doing the basics and hoping on and on and on and on that
AM things will get better.

I agree. This is my hope, too.

AM To work with a beta and tolerate the shortcomings, I have to see a
AM bright future. I used to have faith that there was one, but now I
AM don't. Though changes have been made, the overall progress has been
AM very slow for the last several months since attempts to fix one
AM problem brings on other problems/issues. There's this constant
AM grappling with basic efficiency with mail retrieval/reading etc.

I agree. IMO, the focus for me seems wrong. I could care less for skins
and all the other bells and whistles. What Ritlabs need to do is to pour
a large number of development hours into getting IMAP to work - since
the current state will just create more and more disgruntled users.

Look how many - myself included - complained about the version 3 scheme:
IMAP was promised in the series 2 - but now, 20+ builds after series 3,
it still does not work. That is just going to tick even more people off.

And all the people trying TB! because it claims IMAP will quickly feel
TB! is flaky - and due to this they might not even want to use TB! for
POP.

AM A properly functioning outbox that will work as a draft folder. You
AM can keep unfinished mail there without problems. A couple claiming
AM they have no problems with the current situation doesn't help.

Actually, for my Mailmax server, this seems to work fairly OK. Does not
work with my Exchange (IMAP) account at work.

AM Labelling needs to be implemented. I can easily label messages as
AM important etc. and expect to retain these labels across locations.

Good idea. Not vital to me, but if it's part of IMAP, I'm all for it.

AM Performance despite having multiple connections support is still
AM disappointingly poor.

After 3.0.1.33, IMAP has become completely unusable for me: hanging
connections and so on. I hope the new beta series will improve this
significantly. 9Val has contacted me in order to get my input.

AM It's faster, but still not good enough. I found myself pruning
AM folders down just to accommodate this. I shouldn't have to be doing
AM this.

As written above, my connection is so fast that this is no problem for
me. Connection lock-ups is a much larger issue.

AM Filtering needs to be better so that I can easily filter from low
AM bandwidth locations.

I agree that filtering needs to improve.

AM The sound support is flaky. After a long break from TB!, I'll open
AM it to a cocophony of new message sounds and there are no new
AM messages. I've already read the new messages from another client!

OK, I have never had this.

AM All I ask for is a debugged protocol with attention to efficiently,
AM *reliably* and properly operating basic functions. I'm not prepared
AM to work with quirky implementations that work to some extent or in
AM some sort of a way thanks to the great efforts behind shoe-horning
AM around the POP3 code base.

I agree. Ritlabs should never have embarked on IMAP if they do not want
to Do It Right and Do It Completely.

AM I've been totally detoxed from the addiction of templates and
AM MicroEd. That took a long time, but in the end, those are tools to
AM augment the basic requirement which is the working protocol behind
AM them. For me, they fade into insignificance without the working
AM protocol. Though they make some things easier for me, I manage
AM better with better IMAP than flaky IMAP and the TB! additions.

Yes. I think the fundamental difference between you and me is that IMAP
is vital to you and it is important to me (OK it's vital at work but
here I don't get that may messages and the connection is 100 MBit).

Here at home (mainly POP - but I'd like to move to IMAP) I have so many
things that depend on macros and RegExp, that switching to another
client hardly is an option at the moment.

AM Otherwise, I will continue to feel like I'm testing for just
AM testing, rather than testing towards a final product that I'll end
AM up really continuing to use in the end.

I understand you completely. I hope what I have written above will show
why I

Hi Peter,

show why I will continue to help with testing IMAP.
Yes, I understand and can see 'eye to eye' with all your comments. As
with all imperfect choices, we choose the one that will work best for
us at a given time. I can actually get by with TB! at home since my
IMAP server runs on my working system. The connection is therefore as
fast as it can be. The connection speed just overcomes any
inefficiencies with sheer speed. ;) However, I've had enough for the
time being with just 'getting by'.

However, I appreciate that your situation allows you to make the
decision you made, i.e., to carry on, and I'm happy for that because
I'm sitting here thinking that TB! IMAP needs testing in different
environments to improve. :) There lies the dilemma.

However, I need good evidence of commitment to really get the thing
working soon without explanations that we have to make do because of
POP3 architecture getting in the way as well as priority issues putting
IMAP on the backseat even for a while. I know that this may be the
reality and I understand it from a development POV. I'm not being
suggesting anything to RITLabs. If I can't get this, I've given a lot
of time and am not yet prepared to give more with the uncertainty. I
may get a second wind yet, and start actively testing again.
