3.5.24 MSI installer bug no #2

2005-06-01 Thread Prezes
Hello,

 1. Create virtual drive by subst in Windows XP:

 subst z: n:\

I created virtual z drive from all n drive - this is very
reliable when I use TB in my 2 computers - TB is in other physical
locations, but virtual paths in registry, configuration paths, etc is
 always Z:\.

 2. Try to install TB in such drive (z) - this is impossible!
 3. Try to install TB in n - physical location - this is impossible
 due to security violation.
 4. Try to disconnect z drive (subst /d z:) - this is impossible due
to bug described oin my previeus post 3.5.24 MSI installer bug no
 #1.

The only solution to install TB is now disconnecting TB from subst
and then mapping n as network drive and then install on z.

I'd think it'll not *move* the message base, not. But it should
recognize the values in your registry and configure itself
accordingly. Moving the message base would be something you'd have to
do manually. But I don't consider this a problem; for several versions
now TB! puts message base in %APPDATA% by default and from there it
does not need to be moved anywhere, just because the executable is put
into a different directory.

Thanks for your response, Allie. It's helped me to understand what's
going on. Sometimes I think my biggest problem is not knowing what
all the options actually do. :)

That's a bummer. I compress on exiting folders and this seems to work
 most of the time.

I'm loathe to check that option as I don't want to expunge the
messages until I've exited the program. I sometimes need to retrieve
the deleted messages.

good explanation snipped for brevity

No. It would be better to just compress all folders intermittently or
just after a startup or just before a shutdown of TB!. This is because
compressing on exit isn't working for you.

Seems like that's the route I'll have to take.

more good explanation snipped for brevity

I don't even know what to say here. AFAIK, the IMAP protocol makes the
concept of a trash folder unnecessary. For example, Mulberry accounts
don't carry trash folders. If you delete a message in IMAP, it's simply
flagged as deleted. This is different from POP3 deletions. I know that
for TB! POP3 deleted messages remain in the message base until you run a
compress operation, but this isn't so for most other POP3 clients. As a
 result, trash folders are necessary.

After your explanation of how it works, I can see that it's
unnecessary for me to use a local trash folder. If I want to keep the
messages since I can be a little delete happy at times, I uncheck
the compress when moving between folders option and they'll be there
until I manually compress or exit the program (assuming that gets
fixed). If I want to keep them indefinitely, then I would also uncheck
the option to compress folders on exiting at which time the messages
would only be deleted when I manually compressed.

Again, thanks so much for your explanation.

snipped for brevity

Oh yes. Do you, Terry, really need full synchronisation?
For me, TB! is useless with synchronisation. I get duplicate messages,
reloading is poor slow, opening messages can take forever, if TB! is
updating its list in the background.
Since I turned synchronisation off, TB! works as good as TB! works with
IMAP and I can work with it quite okay.

I reported this problem and got some confirmations. Unfortunately I can't
 find it this time.

Well, I don't know if I need full synchronisation now. IIRC, there was
a problem with one of the very early betas of the 2.x, or 3 versions
that I was able to overcome by using full synchronisation. Those
settings have stayed with me. Perhaps it's time that I reviewed all my
different account settings. I think this is another case of not
knowing how all the settings really work. If I did, then I could
determine what would be best.

I would swear this is related to synchronisation. ;)
Terry, what connection are you using? Fast or slow one?

A fast one, I've got a 2MB ADSL connection.

You're right, Allie. Since Stefan wrote they will focus on IMAP in the next
beta cycle and said something about showing deleted messages in the
normal message list, this would be a thing, we can point them to.
When one is able to see deleted messages with a different colour or strike
out or something in the message list, copying to trash folder is really
 useless.

That would be incredibly helpful.

Thanks for your response.

Huh, I thought it may be the same problem that Allie has at work. With a

I've often thought about that and asked for it quite a while ago. Every
time you check it you end up with extra dates added on the end.

What it needs is a button that adds the date stamp if and when you want to
add a new entry, not automatically every time you open it just to read
 previous entries.

Hello TBBETA,

I keep getting blank pages when trying to view messages. I can view
previous ones but sometimes not new ones in the list.

No Message Loaded errors I can live with as I know it's because TB is
trying to retrieve them from the server. Knowing the message is there but
not displaying is another thing. TB! just sits there doing nothing and no
message is displayed however long I wait.

The messages in question get marked as read and I can even delete them
  but they don't display.

Expunging messages in TB when you switch folders is a very erratic
experience for me, sometimes it works, most times it doesn't.

In my opinion messages marked for deletion should at the very least be
expunged totally when you exit the program. However when I suggested this
the reply I got from 9val was:

9val It is not supposed to work on close program.

So if switching folders don't work and you close TB down, all those
messages you Thought were deleted are all still there on the server. For
me that's unacceptable and the main reason I have very little if no faith
at all in TB! at present.

I occasionally get important confidential mail. When I do I make a local
copy and delete it from the server... Well, I used to assume it was being
deleted from the server, I have no faith in TB's ability to do that on it's
own now though.

They don't, other than to allow you to browse for the file elsewhere.

wrote:

Yes. Looks like though the message list may be synchronized on startup,
with that of the server, the cached message base itself isn't. As a

Hmm, not for me. I don't use synchronisation.

I don't either.

Open TB!, getting new messages, close TB! without reading them.
Open Mulberry, reading new messages, deleting and expunging them, closing
 Mulberry.
On reopening TB! still has the bold folder for some time. But after a while
 - say: after TB! has updated his whole message list for all folders - the
 message is away.

However, are the messages still in the message base file, i.e., the .tbb
file. I'd bet they are, and that they remain there until you run a
compress operation on it.

Remember that TB! uses two files for each mailbox, the .tbi file that is
for the message list and the .tbb file that is for the actual message
bodies.

Oh yes. Do you, Terry, really need full synchronisation? For me, TB!
is useless with synchronisation. I get duplicate messages, reloading
is poor slow, opening messages can take forever, if TB! is updating
its list in the background. Since I turned synchronisation off, TB!
works as good as TB! works with IMAP and I can work with it quite
 okay.

I agree here that TB! works best with no synchronisation. If you have a
fast connection, you certainly don't need it, since you're likely on a
broadband connection. If you have a slow connection and think you need
full synchronisation, then it's still a problem unless you're willing to
leave TB! synchronising for an hour or so before going back to read some
mail.

I agree that it's not really right, but that's how it works now.
Expunging on the server using another client or tool, doesn't mean that
TB! will update its cache on a restart. TB! depends on you to use its
own compress operations. If you did so, the cache would be up to date
and commensurate with what's happening on the server.

I would swear this is related to synchronisation. ;)
Terry, what connection are you using? Fast or slow one?

Synching the message list doesn't mean that the message base is sync'd.

No Message Loaded errors I can live with as I know it's because TB is
trying to retrieve them from the server. Knowing the message is there
but not displaying is another thing. TB! just sits there doing nothing
and no message is displayed however long I wait.

The messages in question get marked as read and I can even delete them
 but they don't display.

You could try one of two things when this pesky problem arises.

You could try using the message reload option. It's in the popup menu
for the message list.

You could also empty the folder cache and allow it to be rebuilt. Is the
problem occurring with a particular folder.

For me, messages not loading occurs only in one circumstance and that is
when I attempt loading a message when the mailbox is busily being
updated. A message reload helps here.

If you still have problems then this makes me wonder if you're
experiencing that old bug where TB! fails to retrieve the message
properly and what you have cached is the message without a message body.
I think a TB! restart usually treated this, or a cache emptying and
rebuild.

Of course, none of these solutions are necessarily acceptable. However,
how you manage to fix the loading could help lead to exactly what's
happening.

Reloading as a fix implies a simple retrieval problem.

Cache rebuild implies a corrupted cache or corrupted message body
retrieve.

Will there be offers during installation whether or not the user wishes

RO So here's the procedure I followed:
RO Clicked on the link
RO Downloaded the pro msi
RO Closed all programs
RO Closed this xp user account
RO switched to an xp account with admin rights
RO Ran the downloaded msi

same here, except for the switching of accounts.

RO Switched accounts again
RO Started TB

RO The switching of accounts shouldn't matter, but I prefer to have XP

Nope... of course I closed tb :rofl2:

Re: Little bug quoting when using RTV and Smileys

2005-06-01 Thread MAU
Hello Natasha,

You also using regular expressions in your reply template? Could be this is
 causing your problem.

No, no RegExp in my templates.

Its is not _my_ problem because I normally don't use RTV. What I did
yesterday was to verify that there is a problem and that this problem
explains why some other people do not include smileys when quoting. As
an example, take mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] from
Tony Boom yesterday. He was replying to me and I noticed that, when
quoting me, the ;-) I had included in my message was not quoted.

Tony, if you read this, do you normally use RTV?

TBBETA Mission Statement

2005-06-01 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Greetings Beta Listers,

This is your monthly message from the moderation team to remind you
of the primary purpose of this discussion list.

To review the list rules, follow the link at the end of this message.

Before posting a question to the list, please check The Bat! User's
FAQ at: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/FAQ.html and the list
archive at http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED] To
join the list, send a message to
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

TBBETA Mission statement

The TBBETA list has been set up for the purpose of discussing The
Bat! officially released Beta test versions and related issues. For
general topics of a more simple nature regarding full release
versions, refer to TBUDL. For more complex topics refer to TBTECH.

An 'officially released' beta version is one which has been
announced *by RITlabs* on the TBBETA list, usually with a list of
changes.

Simply send messages to tbbeta@thebat.dutaint.com to send it to
the whole list.

See the notes at the end of this message for details about how to
manage your list membership or to leave the list.

It would probably be a good idea for you to set up a folder to keep
TBBETA messages in. If you do this, the next most useful thing to
have in place is an automatic filter to move mail from your inbox
into your TBBETA folder.

Set up a filter for incoming mail which looks for:

Header Field [Reply-To] Contains [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The Roguemoticon Project

It's nice to see your contact's face in the header ... and for them
to see yours. That's what roguemoticons are all about. If you wish
to add yourself, then you'll need to visit this site
http://www.pcwize.com/thebat

What this place will do for you is to allow you to create an
account, add your image and then let you download a .ZIP file
containing all the files you'll need to be able so see people's
faces without having to send or receive any real images in any
messages.

To trigger the roguemoticon display in the message header for anyone
reading your message using TB, you have the choice of using the
X-Rogue: header or a signature trigger.

How to use a signature trigger
The image is triggered by a 'Handle' you've defined in your
account, and when that Handle appears in a message it gets
replaced on the client side by the corresponding image. A handle
could look like anything you want it to look like pretty much.
For example:
:Leif_Gregory:
Just add this text to your standard message signature block.

How to create the X-Rogue: header
You can do that with this macro:
%SetHeader('X-Rogue',':your_handle:')%- in your templates for
this and other tb-lists.
However, the macro alone won't do the trick.
TB'll say: 'Hey, that's not any RFC822 header I know about', so
you'll have to define it as such:
Options .. Preferences .. Messages .. Message headers .. 'Add'

Now you'll get a pop-up to define the header

Display as: X-Rogue (or whatever, it isn't very important)
  RFC header: X-Rogue
Uncheck: 'This field is an address list' (because it isn't)
Check: 'Allow this field to be edited in the message editor'
Uncheck: 'Display this field in the scrollable part of the
  header pane'

Now you're done and every TB-user can see your lovable face when
they've installed the roguemoticons.

For you to see peoples faces:

To get this going, you should be running TB! v2.12 or later. Fetch
  the following file:
  http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/smileys/rogues.zip

Unzip it to the 'Images' directory that's in your TB! installation
  directory: C:\Program Files\The Bat!\Images
You should now have a directory called 'rogues' containing many
images as well as the file 'rogues.msl' in your Images directory.
Go into the preferences, and bring up the View/Editor options. Now
hit Shift-CTRL-Alt-T while TB! is in focus. This will re-fetch
TB!'s smiley set from disk and load the new images.

Yes. It has been this way since 3.0.1.33. I got into a

in the pre-3.0 series, was somehow fixed in 3.0, and then returned in
the 3.0.1.33 fix version.

The smiley will be quoted in the middle of a line, but not at the end,
or standing alone on a separate line.

In a discussion here, one of the developers told me that it couldn't
be fixed.

So I've been using the work-around of switching briefly to PTV before
quoting a message with smileys in it. (Thankful for the context menu
for message bodies allowing an easy switch between PTV and RTV!)

No one seemed to be bothered by this little bug except me, so I shut
up about it. But it does have the potential to do some harm in
inter-personal relationships, besides simply being confusing.

Try it by replaying and quoting this line ;-)

Didn't even need to try! Knew all along--but didn't think about it in
connection with Liz's missing your smiley.

You don't even need to send the reply, you will see it in the editor
 window.

True!! But even if one has noticed the smiley, one may not notice the
failure to quote it, unless sensitized to it, as I am.

Now I understand why Liz misunderstood Tony's reply to my joking about
 his digital signature.

Using RTV but _not_ the Use smiley icons in HTML viewer option, the
ASCII smiley is quoted just fine.

Yes, but then the smiley images--which I do still enjoy seeing in
messages--are not displayed in the original message; only the ASCII
text which calls the images.

 Confirmations?

Fully confirmed. I do indeed wish there were a way this could be
fixed.

above is quoted fine, smiley included. However, see the quote below from
 a message from Mary Bull:

The line above wouldn't quote for me when I replied to your original

But--same line of text--it did quote (from RTV, with Use Smiley ...

A different style of smiley, though: ;) instead of ;-)

This I can affirm is not significant. Quoting or failing to quote
happens randomly, no matter the style. If it is set to call an image
from the Default smiley folder in The Bat!, it will randomly fail to
quote at the end or in a line to itself.

This happens both in a full quote of the message body text or in a
selected quote, no matter how carefully the highlighting positioning
is done.

You also using regular expressions in your reply template? Could be this is
 causing your problem.

Could you explain how this might play into the mix? I do have regular
expressions in my reply template.

It's only on mailing lists that I don't care whether a sig verifies or

I know, your right, I couldn't give it up. But that's more to do with the

to be on here... The Email client.

For me, after approx four to five years of using TB I now find that it's
crap with no sign of improvement. Also I hate the fact I'm forced into
using a client I'd never heard of 2 weeks ago just to be able to get some
degree of reliability into my email experience.

If I thought something was being done to improve things I'd be a bit more
amicable of the situation. Trouble is I'm being totally ignored in favour
of missing icons, AV's that don't appear to exist and MSI's.

Just as I think I've found a temporary solution and decide to persevere a
bit longer, something else equally annoying happens and my confidence in
the product takes another dive.

They seem more worried about getting a Microsoft product to work rather
than their own.

Thing is Allie, I'm not asking for new features or enhancements. These just
add dozens of new bugs. All I'd like is for existing features to be fixed
and working before adding new ones.

Take the MSI installer issue. What happened to the old installer? It worked
perfect! I don't remember there ever being installation problems with it.
What happened to the old adage If it ain't broke don't fix it? That seems
to have been translated by RIT into If it ain't broke dump it in favour of
something that is then spend months sodding about with it at the expense of
everything else

We had a *perfectly good* installer and it's been removed in favour of
something that is far from working at all let alone being anywhere near
good!

Par for the course though isn't it?

Yes. I think so, too. Although, I had understood from previous
conversations with Tony that he keeps the Smiley function disabled.

However, if he was using selected quoting, just a misfire of the
highlighting (omitting the end of the line) would result in the same
unfortunate truncation.

I guess I'll have to find an alternative to the use of smileys to
indicate that I am not being serious some times.

Ah, I hadn't until this minute focused on the double and triple
quoting which goes on in our mailing list threads. Once a person
posts, whether the smiley stays with his quote is out of that person's
hands.

Well, it's not nearly so convenient, but stage directions in
brackets are a style that I borrow occasionally from Leif. grin

The optimum solution would be for the developers to spot where things
are breaking down and fix it. But I guess they don't have time, and, as
you say, this is a little bug, compared to all the feature-enabling
and Big Bug fixing that is on their plates. smiling sadly

At any rate, I'm glad to have a little bit of TBBETA list attention to
it, presently. :)

It didn't work perfect, in fact it stopped working for me on my
previous system, somewhere around v2.10
In order to install TB I had to extract the files manually wit WinRar.

Suggestion: HTML templates

2005-06-01 Thread Vili
I suggest to Ritlabs to implement HTML templates.

Customization of interface is just scratching a surface, the real
improvements effects the main majority of the users. 10% or so will
customize the surface, only the hardcore TB! users... Like users
on this list. But we have to keep in mind, we are not the majority.
Competition (PocoMail etc.) are watching and is very strong, TB!
can be on top if it always include something really new, really user
friendly stuff. Like macros were...

And RELIABILITY. Building new stuff is good. But reliability should
be ALWAYS in focus...

Sorry, I did not want to preach... :))

TBS to v3.5.25. Opening View, Toolbars, Customise, it is not possible
TBS to set shortcut for a specific colour group.

That was impossible as soon as the new customization model was
introduced.
However, you can work around this problem by creating a filter with
your color group as action. You can still assign shortcuts to filters.

3.5.25: SMTP server settings

2005-06-01 Thread Vili
I guess, this issue was around a long-long time ago...

When someone use TB!, the SMTP server is always the same (some exception
possible). When I am on the road, I would like to use a different
provider, so I have to go to each account's setting and set the SMTP
server. Or, what I can do is, use a SMTP server software. But some
email client think then that I am a spammer...

So: why is not a Global SMTP server setting somewhere in the program?

I guess, this would be USEFUL, a REAL improvement... Many of use
use laptops, some of us on the road, connecting motels' wireless
network... Why do we have to use webmail?

Thank you, Roelof!

I dont understand, why we have to LEARN new techniques to get old
things working ALL THE TIME a new major version is out :( I guess,
it is a lack of vision and plans...
