This does not achieve the same effect, AFAIK. Autosize democratly
added additional width to *any* column when the client window was
resized. This was very handy on a big monitor when changing TB's size.

Limit expansion however only affects the first column, not all
columns. They always keep their designated width. So even when I
expand TB! over my 1900px wide display the columns are still as small
as before.

Me I am also missing the autosize feature, that disappeared a while ago when
major rewrites of the interface took place. A little at least. But I
know that finding the right behavior will be difficult, as some might
prefer having the preview window changing its size automatically
instead of the message list.

TBBETA Mission Statement

2005-11-01 Thread Marck D Pearlstone

Greetings Beta Listers,

This is your monthly message from the moderation team to remind you
of the primary purpose of this discussion list.

To review the list rules, follow the link at the end of this message.

Before posting a question to the list, please check The Bat! User's
FAQ at: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/FAQ.html and the list
archive at http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED] To
join the list, send a message to
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

TBBETA Mission statement

The TBBETA list has been set up for the purpose of discussing The
Bat! officially released Beta test versions and related issues. For
general topics of a more simple nature regarding full release
versions, refer to TBUDL. For more complex topics refer to TBTECH.

An 'officially released' beta version is one which has been
announced *by RITlabs* on the TBBETA list, usually with a list of
changes.

Simply send messages to tbbeta@thebat.dutaint.com to send it to
the whole list.

See the notes at the end of this message for details about how to
manage your list membership or to leave the list.

It would probably be a good idea for you to set up a folder to keep
TBBETA messages in. If you do this, the next most useful thing to
have in place is an automatic filter to move mail from your inbox
into your TBBETA folder.

Set up a filter for incoming mail which looks for:

Header Field [Reply-To] Contains [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The Roguemoticon Project

It's nice to see your contact's face in the header ... and for them
to see yours. That's what roguemoticons are all about. If you wish
to add yourself, then you'll need to visit this site
http://www.pcwize.com/thebat

What this place will do for you is to allow you to create an
account, add your image and then let you download a .ZIP file
containing all the files you'll need to be able so see people's
faces without having to send or receive any real images in any
messages.

To trigger the roguemoticon display in the message header for anyone
reading your message using TB, you have the choice of using the
X-Rogue: header or a signature trigger.

How to use a signature trigger
The image is triggered by a 'Handle' you've defined in your
account, and when that Handle appears in a message it gets
replaced on the client side by the corresponding image. A handle
could look like anything you want it to look like pretty much.
For example:
:Leif_Gregory:
Just add this text to your standard message signature block.

How to create the X-Rogue: header
You can do that with this macro:
%SetHeader('X-Rogue',':your_handle:')%- in your templates for
this and other tb-lists.
However, the macro alone won't do the trick.
TB'll say: 'Hey, that's not any RFC822 header I know about', so
you'll have to define it as such:
Options .. Preferences .. Messages .. Message headers .. 'Add'

Now you'll get a pop-up to define the header

Display as: X-Rogue (or whatever, it isn't very important)
  RFC header: X-Rogue
Uncheck: 'This field is an address list' (because it isn't)
Check: 'Allow this field to be edited in the message editor'
Uncheck: 'Display this field in the scrollable part of the
  header pane'

Now you're done and every TB-user can see your lovable face when
they've installed the roguemoticons.

For you to see peoples faces:

To get this going, you should be running TB! v2.12 or later. Fetch
  the following file:
  http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/smileys/rogues.zip

Unzip it to the 'Images' directory that's in your TB! installation
  directory: C:\Program Files\The Bat!\Images
You should now have a directory called 'rogues' containing many
images as well as the file 'rogues.msl' in your Images directory.
Go into the preferences, and bring up the View/Editor options. Now
hit Shift-CTRL-Alt-T while TB! is in focus. This will re-fetch
TB!'s smiley set from disk and load the new images.

ZW Instead of removed Autosize option you should use Limit

ZW ago.

Aha. But sorry, I still don't get it: How is this option supposed to
work?

I'm using the same TheBat on a 19 LCD and a 17 CRT. In v3.0.1.33 I

always spanned the whole window width.

In v3.5+ this doesn't work: If I have the columns comfortably in view
on the 19 display, on the 17 CRT I have to scroll right to see the
last two columns.

Can you tell me how I have to use Limit Ex to solve that?

Re[2]: About release

2005-11-01 Thread Alto Speckhardt

Hi,

ASK So far, it is you alone who wants MicroEd to behave differently.

Don't give me that.

How many people on this list wanted the UI updates when the
developement started for v3.5.x? Almost noone, all complained about
unfixed bugs that should have been adressed before.

Still, RIT had the opinion that a new UI would be more valuable to the
average user than working on silent code. I, too, don't agree with
them, but they ought to know why they were doing it in this order.

And now you want to tell me that because most of the experts
participating in this list have adjusted to the TB-way it was ok to
the standard user?

I heavily disagree. Do you have any idea how many individuals whose
computer system I service have enquired about this issue, to me alone?
And can you imagine how satisfied they are when I have to tell them
that no, it isn't a bug, they are just to stupid to use a feature
correctly?

The user decides what's a bug and what's a feature. What exactly the
TB-way is might be a matter of debate, but a feature it for sure is
not.

An afterthought: vi is a great editor. I'm sure we can agree on that,
can't we? But tell me: How many guys are using this great editor, even
compared to notepad?

Does RIT want all the vi-users to root for TheBat, or do they want to
target all those using notepad? How often have we heard that while we
on this list may not approve some developement decision, it is
expected that the broad mass of average users will?

And now, suddenly, this is not valid any more and the marketing target
is the small expert group that applauds this TB-specialty? Come on.

ASK You consider it a bug [...]

Not any more. You explained to me that it rather is a design flaw.
Which of course is worse, because a bug tends to be fixable.

ASK Now, I for one refuse to have something fixed [...]

Sometimes I wonder. Did you even read that what I was suggesting a
user config option to switch to normal behaviour, not necessarily a
removal of the TB-way?

The user decides what's a bug and what's a feature. What exactly the
TB-way is might be a matter of debate, but a feature it for sure is
 not.

It is. The fact that it's based on an unusual approach/design, doesn't
take away the fact that it's a feature. The editor is special. Simple.
It's clear that what makes it special, you don't like. I may ask you
how many that ask about the strange behaviour grow to like it when they
see what it offers them. However, if you're the one offering the
support, and with your attitude about the editor, I doubt you'd have
anyone 'converted'. :)

TB!'s editor was the first of its kind I had ever encountered when I
first used it. I found it quite 'funky' in how it worked. However, it
did things I didn't see other editors do. In fact, it still does things
that I can replicate only in GVim.

An afterthought: vi is a great editor. I'm sure we can agree on that,
can't we? But tell me: How many guys are using this great editor, even
 compared to notepad?

Notepad users will find one of the other editors to be just fine. :)

The top post anyway, don't they???

Does RIT want all the vi-users to root for TheBat, or do they want to
target all those using notepad? How often have we heard that while we
on this list may not approve some developement decision, it is
expected that the broad mass of average users will?

With this editor it's a little different in that it's not the only
packaged editor. Your personal requirement is that of an expert in that
you've discovered special formatting abilities of MicroEd and wish to
have them while at the same time, have the editor works its other magic.

I doubt you'll find an average user engaging in this sort of exchange.

And now, suddenly, this is not valid any more and the marketing target
is the small expert group that applauds this TB-specialty? Come on.

I agree with this concern, but with 2 other editors to choose from, I
doubt that it's as urgent as it was before. In fact, the MicroEd
complaints have all but vanished since the introduction of those two
alternative editors. Before their introduction, TBUDL was constantly
bombarded and this is why they were introduced in the first place.

Speaking of Editors

2005-11-01 Thread Stuart Cuddy
Hello tbbeta,

Since we are having a discussion on editors could someone explain
how the HTML editor is supposed to handle wrapping. When I reply to
a message I get the blue box that is sent to a specific width, not
sure what that is. When I start typing my reply it goes on until it
reaches the end of the screen.

Does the limit Wrap text after x characters, that says it works
for all editors, not apply at all. Does it apply for the original
box that is around quoted text.

Just a question, do not want to start any wars.

Re: Scheduler stupidity

2005-11-01 Thread Vili
Hello Mike,

I have determined the scheduler function is stupid. I have it set to
make an incremental back-up every night at 2 AM and send me an e-mail
when it is done. Last night, I intentionally deleted the back-up
file/location. When I woke up, I had an error message (file not found)
and cancelled the back-up, so it was never done. Guess what? Got an
e-mail that said the back-up was complete. Now what happens when I
automatically compress folders, do folder maintenance etc. and there
is an error that I don't see or the process doesn't really complete? I
will still get an e-mail that says it's complete? This is false and
and can lead to problems down the line. Comments? Thoughts?

Write a BT. Bug must be in a code, the boolean (that triggers the
email sent to you) is set true too early to signal the success of the
backup. I think, it is easy to fix.

ZW Condition for this filter may be very simple, for example, you can check if

Funny thing is, my AB is completely empty at the office. There is so
much fluctuation in email addresses that the updating would be a
headache. If I am looking for a certain address, I use the search
function on the message base.

ZW or, if number of domains is small, you can check null condition.
ZW Additionally, you can create such folders automatically, so sender

No, I don't want to create folders automatically. The folders are
about the country the agent is in, and several agents in the same
country share one folder. Some agents have offices (and the same
domain) in several countries, and those few have agent folders rather
than country folders.

I don't even know how many hundreds of domains I filter on across
several accounts, but I'd be completely helpless without TB's
filtering system. With a reference to EM Level 5, I should ask NASA
to have a look at it.

Almost there. In fact in this release you have to double-click twice
to get the effect. As far as I understand, it happens because first
double-click places the cursor to the header and only the second one

When clicking open link (e.g. from-value selected) a new mail opens,
with the popup over the editor-window.

I cannot confirm this as well. It works as expected, without remaining menu
image.

The main problem seems to be that the event clicked reopens the
 popup after the first click.

I use Windows as shown below, so may be it is Windows 98 problem?

Hello Mike,

V Write a BT. Bug must be in a code, the boolean (that triggers the
V email sent to you) is set true too early to signal the success of the
V backup. I think, it is easy to fix.
 Here's the BT link...
 https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=5277

I read the BT, and I started to think about it, just before I wrote
that Confirmed.

There is an event scheduled. At the start, you make a backup, at the
finish, you generate the email. But that email will ALWAYS say that it
was successful, as you made the template saying that it was a
successful backup, right?

So, I think the real solution somewhere would be the possibility to
evaluate the result of the start action. Because now you set a mail to
be set when the EVENT FINISHED, not when the START ACTION WAS
SUCCESSFUL.

Do you see the difference?

So, for a 2nd thought, it is not really a bug, as the faulty email is
not because of bad evaluation (my mistake), but the lack of
evaluation...

Maybe, there should be some:

'Run this action if the Start action was successful...' between the
start and the finish actions...

They should have learned that before releasing it on their main

Imagine thinking all of your e-mails have been backed up for the last

really done until one day your mail file becomes inaccessible.

I totally understand you. Ok, lets be constructive: go to the BT,
close the issue, and send a new WISH. I will support that, as e.g. it
is possible to return a result value (0 or 1) from the start action
for the next one, so that can be evaluated...

Hmm... Thinking further: there should be a %STARTACTIONRESULT or
something macro, so:

Dear Mike,

IF %STARTACTIONRESULT=0 Then Sorry, backup failed
IF %STARTACTIONRESULT=0 Then Sorry, backup failed

Cheers, Mike's TB!

(Ok, I did not use the %IF macro the right way, but something
similar). All we need is a %STARTACTIONRESULT macro, and its result
should be updated by TB! depending on the success of the start action,
if possible...

This way we dont need a 'Run this action if the Start action was
successful...' type action between the start and the finish actions...

Any thought?

The only thing that I don't like is that you are changing the message
source when you receive it. I know that you are doing it for performance
reasons.

But, as the above bug has shown, there is always the risk of a bug in the
conversion code. And when that happens the change is irreversible and the
attachment is permanently corrupted, unless you happen to have another copy
of the email.
If you would convert the message at display time you would not have this
problem.

I also noticed that you are creating a temp file in the Root of C:\ That
should have been in the temp folder. Right ?

Finally this version still produces a GPF on my machine when opening the

something environmental. Do you have a suggestion what it could be ?

RD Recently, Mike Rourke squawked:

Guess it wasn't fully fixed... You want to do the BT or shall I?

https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/main_page.php and file a report there.

went there. opened new account. got confirmation email. clicked link.
got confirmation with new page to set passwords and so forth. did that
and got error message on that page that account locked. tried to log
in again from a clean start and still get this:

Your account may be disabled or blocked or the
username/password you entered is incorrect.

gave up after several tries of the spelling and caps and so on. But I
know that's not the issue

And it works! Thank you.

The mail despatcher opens in the background though. Like with other
situations when I open the despatcher manually, I would need it to
open in the foreground. Can you make it open in the foreground?

Hello Stefan,

Tuesday, November 1, 2005, you wrote to me:

ST [*] Double clicks on the message header control now open links and add
ST addresses to the Address Book, as in versions prior to 3.5

Apparently links don't work at all. POPFile creates headers like:
http://127.0.0.1:8080/jump_to_message?view=popfile214451=326.msg.
Double-click on such headers/links worded just fine in 3.0.x. Now it
does nothing.

Henk, what you are trying to beta-test are the latest
incarnations of the public 3.62 release version.

I know, I should have written versions.

I read in TBUDL that there are more users experiencing these AV's.
I use Bayes Filter plugin but removing that one did not help.
That also goes for closing all other minimized programs :-(

I found that too but, if you hold the RMB down and then do the double
click it works.

 RN Installs and overwrites userdic.tlx.

Well until _this_ is fixed there is no chance I will install it!
Just extract the Data1.cab file from the msi file and extract
thebat.exe.B87e4FD865-whatever from that and save it as thebat.exe

Jepp. That is what an end-user wants from a final release.

a) debug-code which doesn't work without administrator rights
b) the need to extract files from the msi-file to protect his settings
from being overwritten by the installation.
