PC Cillin simply uses an e-mail proxy for scanning, so you just need to set

Problem selecting with Ctrl+Shift in the headers

2005-11-07 Thread Jernej Simoncic
For some weird reason, TB will often change the input order to right-to-left
when pressing Ctrl+Shift+Right Arrow key (to select one or more words right
of the cursor) in any of the header fields. This should not happen, input
order should only change when pressing and releasing Ctrl+Shift alone.

I've got another problem though - some messages don't appear - actually, the

OK, this version is pretty much unusable for me, I keep getting the following
AVs:

,-

I still monitor my TB -20.004- at the moment. Minimizing to systray
frees lots of RAM, usage then is around 1400.

Minimizing a program will always force it into swap in Windows, it's memory
usage doesn't actually lower. To see the program's real memory usage, you
need to activate the VM Size column in task manager and look at that.

BTW, free memory = useless memory. Modern operating systems work most
optimally when only a few (less than 10) MB of physical memory are free
(assuming of course that the running programs and file cache filled the rest

Usability of this is questionable - when you save something, Windows will

applications. If you'd rather have stuff written to disk immediately, you
can turn off caching entirely in the System properties.

 | It repairs the memory leaks and avoids crashes, Blue Screens and

Bull###t. The only thing that can cause BSOD on NT kernel are bad drivers -
and when that's the case, the only way to avoid it is to replace the driver.
Memleaks cannot be repaired except by fixing them in the program that's
leaking. Windows memory manager will automatically swap out the leaked
memory anyway, and unless the program is leaking a lot (or running for a
very long time), this won't affect the system (even then, there's nothing a
3rd party program could do).

 | It comes with CPU Cooler to save power. Thus it will cool the cpu in the

All NT-based Windows execute the HLT instruction in the idle loop, so the
only way to cool down the CPU further is to call HLT from a higher-priority
thread - slowing down the whole system.

 | It increases the uptime of windows systems from few hours to weeks. Thus
 you

I've seen NT4, 2000 and 2003 servers with months of uptime, and the only
thing that prevented them going for years are Microsoft's constant updates
that require restart. I've also had Win98SE running for 27 days, though at
the end, GDI resources were totally consumed, and Windows stopped updating
the display.

 | This program has very small footprint in the memory and does not consume
 any
 | precious resources. It walks away from the fancy interface to give you core
 | performance without using much resources. Its Kernel is written in
 assembly
 | language for speed and size. It does not have any VXD's or system services
 to
 | slow down your system. It runs in low priority and does it's work in
 | background.

Translation: this program works completely in user-space, which means that
it can't actually do anything it's claiming to do.

 | It comes with a task manager to remove unused tasks and also lets you to

There's a ton of task managers out there, even a fairly good one in Windows

This doesn't depend on the software, it depends on:

- the IP you're assigned (if it's dynamic, you can be pretty sure it's

  ranges).

- the DNS PTR you have (PTR is the reverse DNS record - from your message,
it appears to be ADijon-256-1-10-30.w81-51.abo.wanadoo.fr - this one
luckily doesn't have dial-up, dsl or cable in the name, so the

Also, as others have mentioned, your ISP might either block or redirect
through server all outbound traffic to port 25.

DNS PTR records are not needed to match your host name, as long as one has a

though, as a spam check technique. e.g. AOL, and will reject if none are
 found.

I usually set my mail servers to reject connection if the PTR contains
dial-up, dsl or cable, as it's enormous help when dealing with viruses.

Hence the birth of SPF for spam checking. I still contend
that most of the ISPs do block SMTP outbound now.. including the largest in
the world AOL, along with Comcast, Earthlink, just to name a few. There are
also several in Europe, the largest being GMX, Tuscali, etc. A few now have
gone to SMTP auth even on their own servers.

Heh, if the largest ISP in Slovenia (SiOL - Slovenia Online) would do that,
there'd be a lot of complaining - they're known for messing up their own
SMTP server settings regularly (read: at least once in two months), so many
subscribers set up their own, more reliable SMTPs.

  this problem (see attached image).

- Sorting order seems to be reversed

- Ctrl+ (Ctrl+] on US keyboard AFAIK) doesn't work anymore

- Ctrl+Right arrow and Spacebar don't go beyond last message in branch

- Insert in message editor opens Attach file dialog

Do you know of a site (or any other source) where one could find what exactly
is needed to run ones own mail server in a safe way?

First, use common sense. On the server, stop all unneeded services, and set
the firewall to only allow connections from the inernet to the needed ports
(for e-mail these are 25 for SMTP, 110 for POP3, 143 for IMAP, 995 for
secure POP3 and 993 for secure IMAP); this is easier if you have a router,
in this case just forward the ports you need. Next, make sure you follow the
development of the services you're using, and always install security
upgrades. And this is basically it.

LF line endings get converted to CRLF. I'm pretty sure that this happens
because the files were sent as text (maybe encoded with quoted-printable),
so it's up to the receiving client what kind of line ending will it use -
and since we're on Windows, it uses CRLF.

I'm pretty sure that Avi's problem is that the Unix mailer sends the text
file unencoded, with just line breaks converted from LF to CRLF, and if he'd
receive the file on a Unix machine, the mailer there would convert them back
to LF, while a Windows mailer wouldn't. This probably wouldn't happen if the
file was sent Base64 encoded, but then the message would be bigger.

Even better would be, when the screenshot is only used to show a messagebox,
to just retype the message - no need for 100x bigger picture that doesn't
tell anything more.

Also, when you really want to make a screenshot of a dialog box, use
