Re: Keyboard Shortcuts Not Working
Hello TBBETA Members! It seems TB - or my system - has lost it's capability to handle keyboard shortcuts containing more than 3 keys. I assigned 3-key-shortcuts, which work. Alas, as a side effect now my keyboartd layout gets switched every time I use TB's system-wide shortcuts since the only way to get any at all is to assign Shift+Alt to any other key. Hello Goncalo, I follow TBBeta threads on a folder where I receive everything received from the list and when that thread gets dead I move it to a folder related to the year the message arrived. I also have a folder for TBBeta (I'd assume most people do) and for every mailing list I'm subscribed to. But specially for mailing lists I do use threading by Reference because I find it much easier to follow the conversation the way it has been actually produced (i.e. with the different branches and sub-threads). Also because, when threading by Reference (that I call 'proper threading'), if someone modifies the Subject the thread is not broken. Re: TB 4.0.0.6 Alpha - Keyboard Shortcuts
Hello Goncalo, Maybe I wasn't clear enough. Another image to clarify. Even when I select a closed thread the shortcut is and always was CTRL+V and MOVES the ENTIRE thread to another folder. I think I know where our mutual misunderstanding comes from. You are 'threading by Subject', aren't you? If so, I have always maintained that it should be called 'grouping by Subject' to avoid misunderstanding and because only threading by Reference display _proper_threads_. Actually, when threading by subject, as I assume you are doing, if you select the first message of the thread (which is actually only the name (subject) of the group) and you hit the Delete key you get the following warning: --- Delete messages --- The selection contains groups. Do you really want to delete them? --- Sí No --- which, as you can see, refers to *groups*. Now, if you are threading by Subject (like I am assuming you do), then you are darn right and Ctrl+V does move the entire group in 3.99.29 and it doesn't in 4.0.0.7. But that is only if you are threading by subject and you select the 'name of the group'. If you select any actual message in the group, only that message is moved. When threading by Reference, like I do in 99.99% of my folders, then Ctrl+V does only move the first message of the thread (if that's the one selected), and this is so in 3.99.29 and 4.0.0.x. Now, no matter if threading by Subject or by Reference, if you select ANY message in a thread (or group) and you use Shift+Ctrl+V, the entire thread (or group) will be moved. And this was so in 3.99.29 and still is so in 4.0.0.7. With all of this, my opinion is that the behaviour in 3.99.29 (and previous?) when using Ctrl+V on the name of a group was the buggy one, and that it is working correctly now. It's just my opinion. -- Best regards, Miguel A. Re: Keyboard Shortcuts
Thanks a lot for clearing this up, Marck. They have been usurped by the new king ... Customise All menus and toolbars can now be customised and shortcuts are assigned that way. Sadly, old redefinitions have been completely discarded in the changed method. That isn't a big problem for me, because I hadn't redefined much in the past, anyway. Once you'd reminded me, I did remember the discussions of Customize in the distance past--all of which I'd ignored because I wasn't ready at the time. Before I posted my earlier message, I had searched Help, which pointed me to View | Edit Shortcuts, which of course isn't there. Menu Navigator didn't turn up anything for Shortcuts, either. After receiving your message, I searched Menu Navigator for Customise, and still didn't find it. Searching through the menus manually, I did finally find it (not where I expected). Now, after spending most of the morning reading through all the old threads relating to Customise (many of which, of course, are no longer relevant), I'm almost starting to understand how to view and change keyboard shortcuts, although sometimes it works for me and other times it doesn't. Now, I do have a couple more questions: 1. How does one find existing keyboard assignments? I can think of three ways: wading through the Customize dialog, digging into tbuser.def, and just entering a keyboard combination in various contexts to see what happens. None of these seems like a very satisfactory way to accomplish this. 2. Where do I find the shortcuts for expanding and collapsing threads? I don't see them anywhere! -- Keith Russell . But shift+tab quickly reverses it, when I assume that there is nothing left that I want to read. :-) I don't want to spend my life quickly reversing something that should have been automatic. It bugs me no end you need to switch the focus to the folder pane when marking all messages in a folder as read. It bugs me even more that there's an inane confirmation dialog every single time you do that, and equally enervating is the fact that if you also want to mark all messages in all the current folder's subfolders as read, you need to do that via a checkbox that does not remember its last-used state (checked / unchecked). Thus, I spend many minutes every day performing operations in The Bat! that should be intuitive and automatic. Keyboard shortcuts mayhem
Hello TBBETA Members! Some time back I sat two keyboard shortcuts for Mark as Junk and Mark NOT as Junk, the only once I ever set. I had to set them differently for the Message window and the Main window, which I found rather ... wrong. Today I tried to print a message from the Message view by invoking the universal Windows shortcut (Ctrl+p if anybody forgot). It parked the message. So I opened the Shortcut Editor and found that parking a message was assigned to Ctrl+j, which I had used for Mark as Junk. I changed my shortcuts to something other (no warning colour shown), and tried to print again. And again the message was parked. I closed and restarted TB, same all over again. BTW, Ctrl+p is actually shown as the correct shortcut for printing in TB. The main problem actually lies within two different Shortcut Editors sometimes allowing, sometimes not to assign the same (or different) shortcuts to the exact same function. I was unable to assign Ctrl+j to Park Message in the Shortcut Editor invoked from the Message window after I did assign it to the same function, even the same place, in the Shortcut Editor invoked from the Main window. 1. We do need one Shortcut Editor. 2. By default every function that is the same but accessible from two or more places (menu items) should have the exact same keyboard shortcut. 3. As long as warnings are shown and a conflict pane is there we need to be able to change a shortcut whenever we want. 4. We need to delete shortcuts (why should I have KS for features I rarely or never use?). 5. The Shortcut Editor needs to be accessible under Preferences! -- Dierk Haasis :Dierk: Copy 'n' Concept The Bat 3.0.2.10 on Windows XP 5.1 2600 Service Pack 2 Chat info for ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber upon request If a creature, computational or biological, makes eye contact with a person, tracks her gaze, and gestures with interest toward her, that person will experience the creature as sentient, even capable of understanding her inner state. Hello Dierk, On Sun, 9 Jan 2005 you wrote in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] DH 1. We do need one Shortcut Editor. DH 2. By default every function that is the same but accessible from DH two or more places (menu items) should have the exact same DH keyboard shortcut. DH 3. As long as warnings are shown and a conflict pane is there we DH need to be able to change a shortcut whenever we want. DH 4. We need to delete shortcuts (why should I have KS for features I DH rarely or never use?). DH 5. The Shortcut Editor needs to be accessible under Preferences! I heartily agree with every point you've made. I gave up assigning my own shortcuts a while ago because the whole set up is so confusing that I really had no idea where I was with what setting in whatever situation. -- Regards, Richard | The Bat! 3.0.2.10 SpamPal | Windows XP (build 2600), version 5. 1 Service Pack 2 | Opera 8.00 build 7401 PGP public key: http://pgpkeys.mit.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=getsearch=0xCA93B5BE pgpmH8gbJcS8j.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is 3.0.2.10 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

A Bat-fellow, Dierk Haasis, wrote on Sunday, 9 January 2005 at 12:32:36 (GMT +0100), which was ditto in Bratislava -- 4. We need to delete shortcuts (why should I have KS for features I rarely or never use?). You can delete keyboard shortcuts using the present editors, just press the Delete key when an action is highlighted in the editor. It's just that, there are so many simultaneous keyboard shortcuts editors absurdly hidden within TB!'s several View menus that you sometimes have to delete a shortcut in four various places in three various editors before the shortcut really becomes available for a different action that you prefer. ;-))) All of this mayhem is, nevertheless, very much preferable to TB! 1.x versions that offered no option to modify default keyboard shortcuts. 1. We do need one Shortcut Editor. Yes. There are superb keyboard shortcut editors in, for instance, EditPlus and even Microsoft Word. There is a *bad* keyboard shortcut editor in, for example, Opera, in that it (just like TB!) prevents you (unless you manually edit the *.ini file) from setting several keyboard shortcuts for the same action -- and that is a must! For instance, I've been moving messages around in TB! via the F8 key for ages -- however, why am I not allowed to keep the default shortcut CTRL+V for that action at the same time? The Opera keyboard shortcut editor, though bad, has one excellent feature: the ability to switch on-the-fly between various sets of customized keyboard shortcuts, including the default set. So, give us MS Word's keyboard shortcut editor in TB! with Opera editor's ability to switch on-the-fly between various sets of shortcuts, and everything will be fine. (And enable the ESC key, along with all other special keys, for keyboard shortcuts in TB!, as right now the ESC key closes the editor instead of being assigned to an action.) -- Yours, Alex. of Slovakia www.avenarius.sk [flying with The Bat! 3.0.1.33 under Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 amd athlon 2400 mhz 704 mb ram] Current beta is 3.0.2.10 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/
