I could post my photo somewhere in the mailing list members home, if I

I sent my photo to MAU by private post (to keep off the mailing list

Believe me, I am appreciative of all the comments that my saying I was
discontinuing TB use for my primary mail account (Gmail's IMAP) triggered.

What I have learned from all of those well-intentioned and, I might add,
well-informed, comments are:

1. There are some very tech-savvy people on the TB Beta list.

2. TB's IMAP issues don't seem to affect all the group members, but
certainly affect a significant number. They affect some Gmail users and
some Fastmail users, but not all of either group.

3. Gmail's IMAP implementation seems a bit different than, say, that of
the Worldwide IMAP-capable email system, FastMail. It also seems true
that Gmail's may be off the IMAP standard in some way that I wouldn't
understand.

I really haven't the time or inclination to try to go back to an earlier
version of TB, so for now I will continue to use Thunderbird (with Opera
as a backup) for my Gmail IMAP account. I will still leave TB installed
because I have so many good group addresses set up there and need them
for some mailings, even if Thunderbird is now primary for me with Gmail.

I will never say anything negative about TB, and I will continue in this
beta group just in the hopes that the IMAP functionality improves for me
sometime in the future (understanding that some of you are fully
satisfied in your experience with TB's IMAP, and some of you are not - I
don't know how many fall into each camp).

I continue to admire RitLab's hard work.

And I have great respect for the people on this list, even if there is
an occasional descent into madness which appears here. If Barack Obama
can deal patiently with his political opposition, I am sure that we can
all learn to be patient with one another and with ourselves, which is
where both sanity and madness, peace and violence, Love and fear, are found.

Today I will rest (Sunday). Tomorrow, I will continue struggling with
building a fire-prevention website using DotNetNuke. One tech struggle
at a time is enough for me at my advanced age (even a little older than
MAU!).

I enjoy this group immensely. Thank you all.

Hi Bob,

it is a completely different story if we at least partially accept that
TB's IMAP implementation is not perfect. And I can say that I'm using
TB! for years anyway.

Nevertheless the stability of TB! IMAP connection and some other
issues are being discussed for years now. In some versions it seems
that Ritlabs made some progress and with the next version it is even
worse.

All I'm saying is that we're waiting for years now and it's really
time to improve ( not to say goodbye).

I'm using Fastmail as well but I can confirm all the problems
described by Bob. I think Ritlabs should now stick to their statements
in which they've announced multiple times to fix the IMAP engine.

Hi Michael,

I am taking this off-group just to avoid becoming a distraction.

I understand that. I have been using TB for 3 1/2 years (having tried
it some years earlier, before I had either Gmail or IMAP of any kind).

Nevertheless the stability of TB! IMAP connection and some other
issues are being discussed for years now. In some versions it seems

That is what I understand, from being on the TB Beta list. Of all the
Windows IMAP-capable clients, it seems as though the two best are (in
this order): 1) Mulberry (which has an ugly and overly complex interface
IMHO); and 2) Thunderbird (whose interface is better, but not as good as
TB's). As I have mentioned, Opera Mail does very well with Gmail's
IMAP, also, but its interface IMHO is not as good as even Thunderbird's.

All I'm saying is that we're waiting for years now and it's really
time to improve ( not to say goodbye).

Greetings

I understand that, so I am keeping TB on my system but seldom using it
for my primary mail account (Gmail's IMAP option).

Thank you for writing,

Bob Riley

Actually it was version 2.0 when IMAP was promised. As far as I remember it
 was a year 2002.

I am also quite sure it was for version 2.

Hello Bob,

all of these issues are long-standing and haven't been fixed in years.
In fact, you might want to try the final v3-version of TheBat (v3.98.2
I believe), this one is a little (and I do mean a little) better
when it comes to IMAP, at least the connection-lost problems don't
happen as often as they do with the v4.0.38. I personally even
continue using v3.0.1.33 to this day.

Funny, isn't it? All of those years of enduring and reporting IMAP
issues, and all that has changed is that the issues have grown
_worse_ over the versions?

Now that my message base is in the new (version 4.0 on) format, I don't
think I can go back to an older version of TB.

I don't understand it, not being a computer tech person (although I was
a mechanical engineer until age 40, in 1982). However, I also think
RitLabs is doing their best to really redesign their IMAP module for TB,
and I admire their perseverance. I have Googled to look for the best
IMAP functionality for Windows mail clients. There aren't many that get
a top grade. Mulberry does, but I think its interface is ugly and the
program setup options get to be too complicated. Thunderbird seems to
be the runner up as best IMAP, and the interface is decent (if not as
good as TB's). As I have mentioned, Opera's Mail component is the
easiest to set up for IMAP, but its interface is not quite as good as
Thunderbird's IMHO. Outlook 2007 automatically detected the server
setup for Gmail's IMAP services (a cool feature!), but I don't think it
is quite as handy as Thunderbird. So I will go back to using TB as my
primary mail client once the persistent IMAP nuisances are cleared up,
whenever that might be.

I appreciate your replying to my posting. Thanks.

Which suggests not negligence but inability to reproduce what you see,
either by Rit or by many users, which would include myself.

Are you saying that you, too, use IMAP with your ISP and/or Mail
Provider, and you don't see the unable to send mail body due to
processing error message and/or the queuing problem?

If that is true, this suggests that the problem may lay with Gmail's
implementation of IMAP (or, possibly, with my IMAP settings in TB,
although I have tried to follow Stefan Tanurkov's guidance on those).

What do you think, here?
