Dear Roelof, --- Roelof Otten / Dienstag, 30.07.2002, 18:10:24 Working with a Collect Account Actually my current ISP allows for it, but that's a Dutch cable provider, so it's not really a solution for you. ;-) Why? Firewalls compatible with The Bat. Was: Question
Hi, Sudip. On 7/22/02 at 8:18 p.m. you wrote: I used ZA but after it started screwing things in TB!, I removed it. After much searching and many trials, I've come to settle on Agnitum Outpost Pro Firewall. Have no problem with it so far. There's also a freeware version available. Hi Sudip, Avram, I use Zone Alarm Pro (as fas as I know the latest version) and do _not_ have any problems that I am aware of. My OS is Windows XP Professional and I am using McAfee Total Virus Defence with it (also without _any_ problems). What I do remember (you are also referring to that) is some renaming of attachments (the file extentions). When I disabled the Mail-Safe settings everything worked fine at my system. Might have a look at home this evening to check my settings and what changes if a play something with Mail-Safe. The only thing I know (which is confirmed in a Dutch PC magazine) is that ZA loads very slow and is more then a minute slower than another FW (forgot the name). Corrupted MESSAGES file
Hello fellow Batters, I am experiencing a problem with a message folder file which contains over 2GB of mails (with attachments) which has become corrupted somehow. I did the 'normal' thing when this happens which may have been a serious mistake. I was able to see the messages, but the filter for the folder could not place any new messages in it. I deleted the IDX file for the folder and tried to re-index the file. No dice! I also can not see any of the messages previously listed in this folder anymore. :-( I then tried to create another folder and COPY the file to that folder. NO DICE!! It gives me a file error (file fails CRC). Any suggestions on how I can possibly recover the over 1.5GB of graphics attachments that I have not had time to extract and save? This is over FOUR MONTHS (2023 messages) of posts to a mailing list. I am running WIN2K SP2, and FAT32 file system, not NTFS, as I upgraded from WIN98SE. I have had absolutely no errors like this since the upgrade. Running TB 1.60h personal. Is there anything like a utility to repair a corrupted MESSAGES file? I have seen such utilities for other similar apps. Folder Refresh and Account Refresh Folders functions have no effect. -- Warmest tropical wishes, Spike - Hanging out in Hell, Grand Cayman Current Ver: 1.61 FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

MailSafe is a 'feature' that allows you to alter the extension of file names so that a simple double click from the attachment cannot launch it. This means you have to think before you open the file, as you had to save it to disk, then rename the attachment's extension, and then execute it, by which time, I guess the developers have assumed, if you are willing to go to those lengths, then you must trust the file, if not, then you were given ample messing about to realize that it may not be a good idea. Is it the job of this firewall to make attachments useless? Not useless as such, just unclickable from the attachments menu in most email clients. Save to disk, then rename, and the attachment is fine again, and can behave exactly as originally designed. - -- Jonathan Angliss ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: 6.5.8ckt iQA/AwUBPUgx0SuD6BT4/R9zEQL8LACfftyyPvoURaG3LyZZjInicQKV4+AAoI/p ZMkqZJoDZl6tEBxsWbFOjtvH =MJtS -END PGP SIGNATURE- Current Ver: 1.61 FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

Because I am using the free current version of ZA, it only offers mail protection against VBS attachments and it has never interfered with TheBat. When I was using Outlook Express, I used the paid version of ZA-Pro and it offered protection against 45 additional mail attachments (.exe, .com, .scr, etc.). I thought it was a mighty nice safeguard with OE smile. When using TheBat I have not felt the need to purchase the additional protection, although I do allow it to protect against the VBS. I am not sure I necessarily see it as an impediment to using this particular firewall, not even sure the VBS protection is necessary with TB, but since it doesn't interfere, I let it run. OCCLIST when using AB nickname
I just sent out an email with one person in the To: field and a list of people in the cc: field. The list comprised all the people in one AB group. In the contact field, I entered the nickname of the group, which then appeared, in addition to the term list, as in nicknamelist. One of the cc: recipients changed addresses, so I forwarded the message to her. My forwarding template did not include the cc: recipients, so I added a line reading %OCCLIST. What appeared in that field on the forwarded email was nicknamelist, not the list of cc: recipients. It's clear why that is happening, but it shouldn't work like that. On the original message, the actual cc: recipients would appear in the headers for each recipient. I wanted this recipient to also see that list. However, the only way to make that happen seems to be to avoid using nicknames all the time as a precaution, instead going into the AB and clicking to include all of the group members in the appropriate field. Re: Corrupted MESSAGES file
Try compressing the offending folder (after making a backup copy, of course) to see if that helps. If you *do* manage to recover the emails, you might consider reconfiguring your mail accounts to save attachments in a separate folder, so at least they're not trashed if the mail archive goes grobbling off. The only times I've had a corrupted mail folder are when I had attachments stored inline, or had changed storage midstream and older messages were still stored inline. The thought of a 2GB mail archive scares the living daylights out of me. Assuming that most of the message base is still intact and as (the other) Jonathan pointed out, that he wasn't using SecureBat the OP should be able to get at least some of his files out. Took me 3 reads of this to realise that you meant me, and that your name was also Jonathan, spelled the same way too ;) SecureBat encrypts the message base, so using the above method would simply just not work. But I may give the .uue method a play tomorrow. Re[2]: Mail Server
Hello Allie, ACM Why not create an shortcut in the programs/startup menu? Is there no ACM CLI parameter to 'start' it up? If not, you could install PowerPro on ACM your friends server and then use a macro that is executed on the ACM machines startup. It would fire up the batpost and then 'start' it. :) I must admit my ignorance for Windows NT. I'm learning as I go, but so far there appears to be no way to add the program as a service so it starts with the system. The server is set up so there are 'desktops' for various users, with each of us remoting in via a Terminal Services Client. Some programs install themselves as services, such as Argo's mail server, but neither I nor my friend can find a way to do it manually. Even if we could find an area to autorun the program (each desktop has it's own Startup folder that executes with the individual's log-in) when the system starts, the program also needs to be started after it's already been activated. In other words, when you run it, it's sits idle until told to begin monitoring for mail. I do find it ironic, in an almost humorous way, that the traditional hard part was overcome easily (setup config), and the program functions well, but the normally easy thing (getting the darned thing to start by itself) is the problem area. I'll laugh later... :) One other interesting point. I installed another mail server (Argo, as mentioned) as the primary, and am using BatPost as my private smtp engine to get around a port 25 block, so having BP start with my desktop (so no one else could see it) would be fine with me. However, we also haven't found a way to get a desktop to autostart with the system. They only seem to be able to start when someone logs in. And even *then* I'm still facing the program's secondary activation, which it apparently needs to have done manually. I could, of course, locate another server program, but I really do like several factors of BP. First, it's by Ritlabs, secondly it's really small, but fully-functional, and finally, I can turn off pop scanning and use it strictly as an smtp engine. Ideal for my purposes. I'm gonna tough this one out if it kills me! :) Best regards, KurganMailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Current Ver: 1.61 FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/
Re: Corrupted MESSAGES file

Never heard of doing that before, I'm assuming changing the extension means that Winzip opens it, and each message acts as a separate file in the 'acrhive'? Yes, changing the extension to uue makes Winzip think it is one big archive. Winzip lists each e-mail as a text file (0001.txt, 0002.txt, etc.) and each attachment is also listed as a separate file. Just select the file you want and extract it. This can be done using INSTSRV.EXE and SRVANY.EXE, which if I remember correctly were part of the NT resource kit. (Which you have to pay Microsoft to get. However, if you do a web search on those file names they pop up all over the place.) -- Best regards, Jonathan Chattin mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Current Ver: 1.61 FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/
