Hi Steve,

On 20 Oct 2003 11:39:56 (my local time 17:39:56), you typed:
SMS My question is, does anyone know
SMS what might have caused this to happen? Better yet, does anyone know
SMS how to fix this behavior from the keyboard?

This is one of the wonderful things with TB; in order to get things
right with the columns, do the following: go to view|message list
columns and hit enter. Now you're in a dialog where you from a list
can pick the column you want to modify, add or even get rid of. After
choosing the column you want to modify, you can tab to an edit field
where you type in a value in pixels for the width of the column. (If
only other windblows programs could do this...) Ok out of the dialog
and you're done. If you set the folder for which you manipulate the
columns to use the default column settings in the properties of the
folder and then change the column width or what columns to be shown,
the settings also apply to the folders that are set to use default
column settings. I just wish this could be true for other accounts as
well so that we didn't have to set column settings for each and every
account in TB! but that's another subject alltogether.

AB x AB y: entry john Doe belongs to both AB's with different
templates and different mail address: will the account level pick up?

And what if you you have john Doe in 1 AB and also somebody else

different template and if so, how to invoke that? Manual?

Simpler said: a template on account level gives you one template but
what if you need different templates in the same AB?

You might want to try this:

   Look at your Account's Properties.

   Look at Network.

If Use Account Specific Network Settings

Yes, I meant that, but since I don't use GnuPG, I couldn't tell what
that meant. It seemed to address your remarks.

I stopped using PGP a long time ago because it was such a hassle to
use. When I looked at it again about a year ago, I looked at GnuPG (I
think) and OpenPGP, etc. They seemed to be just as much of a hassle as
before. But the latest version of PGP from www.pgp.com seems to be
much less so.

I am a big proponent of no hassle since I look at so much email
every day. This seems to be pretty well done. It stays out of my way,
except for the first time I enter my password; I have it cached for
about hours, so I really only enter it once an email session. And when
I want to check a signature or whatever, it contacts the PGP Key
server for me and gets the public key. I like that. Automated is good
for me. I never liked having to manually distribute my key. I don't
like having to ask for one before using it. I know some people will
think that caching a password for 2 hours is unsecure, but I don't use
this at my office, so it works just fine for me. :)

Do not send attachments not working

2003-10-21 Thread ken green
I have a sorting filter set up for an account that sends a message to my
cell phone if I'm away from my desk (screen saver is active). This is a
great filter that has allowed me to cancel one of my mobile services for
notifications.

But there seems to be a quirk with the filter. I use ATT Wireless, and
this makes my filter somewhat easy to set up. With ATT, you can send a
message as long as you want, but only the first 155 characters or so
will show up. This is usually sufficient if I'm waiting on an important
message and am away from my desk. Besides, I can then connect (GSM) and
receive the entire e-mail if necessary. Note that this initial
notification is treated as a text message (and receiving text msgs are
free).

So all I have to do is redirect the message to get this to work. The
message is truncated automatically (though I hope to get around to
making the filter process the message better and not send extraneous
data). Here is the problem:

In the Actions tab of the filter, I have checked Redirect the message
to: and filled in my mobile phone number. Underneath that is a
checkbox stating Do not send attachments I have this checked, but
according to my Outbox, attachments are getting redirected anyway.

I just verified this by copying the filter and modifying some things. I
sent a message with an attached JPEG, and the filter redirected the
message as instructed - but IGNORED the Do not send attachments
setting and the attachment arrived in my Inbox from the redirect.

Is this a known bug?

If there isn't a specific reason you are using GPGshell, perhaps you

with the automated interface to the public key servers so it can

   That's just SLICK!

the only reason was that I got the idea (which might have been wrong) that the GNUpg

some special builds that were not official or whatever? Well anyway. GNUpg seemed to
be as capable as any other, only the installation I was warned would be more
complicated. Somehow I got through that.
The PGP 8.0.2 is freeware? I can only find it for 50 dollars?

I haven't used PGP since v4, and this is very similar and very easy

TF As for the width of the columns in the message list, go to the header

Yep, this works perfectly. I have to guess at what I think the width

IMAP and filters

I've been playing around with TB's IMAP a little bit, and find the
most annoying thing about it to be the lack of ability to filter

Scanning the various archives I can see that others have the same

John Morse wrote:
Are you serious... you can really create a filter to call a phone

 Tell me more!

:) Yeah, it's pretty cool. And simple too! Note that I am utilizing
text messaging service provided by my wireless carrier (mine is ATT
Wireless). I can send an e-mail to: my wireless number@mobile.att.net
and the message will go to my phone as a text message.

This varies from provider to provider - ATT charges for *sending* text
messages, but doesn't charge for *receiving* them, so this suits me
especially well.

Also, the way that ATT handles text messages is well-suited to my
ham-fisted approach. I think other providers may balk at large messages
or messages with attachments. But this could be addressed in the filter
within TB.

So for me, it's a simple filter that redirects all mail sent to my
business account to my wireless number@mobile.att.net - a redirect
send a copy, by the way, so the message still goes to my Inbox.

I set this filter to be active only when the screen saver is on (great
flexibility of the bat!) and this has worked beautifully for some time
now. The only problem is as I described - that is the Don't send
attachments option does not appear to work. If this is truly a bug,
then it may prevent some people from using a filter like this - I seem
to recall some of the other wireless providers do balk at attachments
being sent as a text message.

Anyway, this filter alone has created a number of oohs and ahhs from
business associates (which helps combat the effect of my boorish
personality).

I do also subscribe to a data plan with ATT GPRS/GSM service so that I
can log on with my phone and get the entire e-mail if necessary (or with
my Palm Tungsten) --- geek alert!

To be honest, I would say that upwards of 75-80% of the time, just
getting the text message is enough, which gives me the first 155
characters of a message.

Of course, this does bring up the whole top posting/bottom posting
issue If someone bottom posts (who in the world would do *that*?!)
then you will still get notified they sent you a response, but you won't
be able read the message.

(exclude Users Depot as it contains information about account names
and what not, which isn't really vital to the display of TB, but
should be included in a normal backup), you can export the whole
branch to a .reg file, and any time something goes amiss, just close
The Bat, run the reg file, and it should fix all the details for you.
This will probably be a little safer than doing a restore of the whole
The Bat! tree when all you need are some basic settings ;)

Unfortunately I doubt it, if anything was attempted, they would
probably be able to get away on a technicality on what the software is

software writers cannot always be held accountable for the software
they write if done in good intentions. For example, they could claim
that the software was originally designed to be used to send mail to
willing participants. Unless you can prove otherwise, the software is
just being miss-used (just like TB could be with the mass-mailer

I beg to differ. What you are effectively doing is popping your IMAP

Can you describe the specific filters that aren't working? AFAIK, the

Upgraded to v2 and property pages vanished

2003-10-21 Thread Simon B
Hello TBUDL,

I just had a bit of a surprise after upgrading TB! from 1.62r to Ver.2.01.3.
If you happen to have more than one folder named 'Inbox' in your account
tree you'll probably know what I mean already.

My account tree is structured so that all incoming messages are filtered
into various folders under a single account. This saves actually having
multiple accounts in TB! of course. I can do this (like others do) as I run
a mail server (Mercury) on another PC so collect all my mail from Mercury/32
into one TB! account.

So, my account tree would be somthing like this, as an example:

My Account
 --Inbox (folder)
 --Sent (folder)
 --Trash (folder)
 [EMAIL PROTECTED] (folder)
 --Inbox (child folder)
 --Read (child folder)
 [EMAIL PROTECTED] (folder)
 --Inbox (child folder)
 --Read (child folder)
 [EMAIL PROTECTED] (folder)
 --Inbox (child folder)
 --Read (child folder)
etc.
and then a shed load of other folders underneath that messages are also
filtered into.

I have filters set up that move mail into the correct folders, so anything
at domain.com gets moved to the related @domain folder's Inbox.

Well the Inbox was a normal folder with the usual property pages before
upgrading to V2. But after the upgrade the properties pages vanished, with
all the templates. However, the templates that I set up for the folder
before the upgrade are still active but there is no way to get rid of them
as there aren't any property pages :-/. So any folder named Inbox before the
upgrade becomes a TB! folder without properties pages afterwards.

How the heck do I sort this out? If I right-click on the folder 'Inbox' and
create new message I get a email using the template from the original folder
before the upgrade and I can't get rid of it.

Any ideas? Please?

Ahh.. yes, you are correct. When I think of *filters* I think of what TB
does to a particular message (in the context of my installation -
locally). What you are describing I would call folder management and/or
server-side filters. My misunderstanding.

I got excited about IMAP in v2.0, I stopped using IMAP, because it
still has problems with managing folders and filtering email. But it's
much better than in 1.62, so I am hopeful that by 2.5 or 3.0, we'll

Without starting a huge debate, can some people weigh in on what the
pros and cons are for IMAP? I understand the protocol a bit, and can
see the benefit of the travelling person (managing messages on the
server). But what does IMAP offer that cannot be done in The Bat with
Dispatcher - even with POP accounts?

Maybe a better question is what is on the horizon for TB - that is, what
is The Bat *close to* being able to do that cannot be done w/
Dispatcher?

I've gone back and forth - it ultimately doesn't matter much to me. When
I access my mailboxes remotely, I use a web interface or some other
mobile means (geek) and I have those methods set to use IMAP.

I understand POP can get messy if accessed from multiple machines,
leaving copies on the server (ex: duplicate messages). But if only one
access point in POP and the rest are IMAP, then things should be OK. At
least this is what I've been told... :)

The problem I have with TB's 1.62 IMAP is that it will only download
untouched (unread) messages. I actually lost some important e-mail this
way. I had accessed my mail with my phone and when I returned, it
appeared that all my messages had been downloaded, so I deleted
everything off the server. When I went to look for a specific message I
read on my phone it was nowhere to be found!

I don't think POP accounts behave this way, but I could be wrong.

CTRL Z is a standard UNDO function, but if you have told it not to save
the message, or you saved it, then deleted it, you may be able to look in
the outbox folder, select Folders, and Browser Deleted Messages. You
may be able to undelete the message from there (that is if you haven't run
