How to filter messages without subject

2004-05-25 Thread Thorvald Neumann
Hæ!

I want to set up a filter to filter messages without a subject line
into a specific folder.

Setting up a filter is easy, but how do I get the kludges filter to
work on empty subject lines?

When in Sent Mail folder, watching an email which is actualy a reply,
is it possible to backtrack to original email? Is there a function

Well, I finally figured it out thanks to the help of this list. I have to say,
however, that it is "bassackward". Here is what I learned, and I'm posting this
for the next poor fool that is trying to accomplish what I wanted. And I would
remind all of those reading that what I originally wanted was a template for
mass mailing that would be viewed in HTML.

1. It cannot be done if you set your editor preferences to use the html editor.

2. You must use the MicroEd editor.

3. You have to hard code the html code in the message or template. When you save
or send the message it is apparently automatically converted to the format I
wanted. In other words, it looks pretty. If you have set your editor preferences
for viewing to see both html and text, you will actually see the message in both
formats and it looks clean.

4. The process is not intuitive, because after you have created the message, you
see the html codes and only through the intervention of this list would I have
seen this through. It didn't make sense to me that you could have an html (and
template) editor that you couldn't use for creating html.

5. Once you have saved the email as a draft or put the email into the outbox,
YOU CANNOT REOPEN OR YOU LOSE FORMATTING. As best I can tell, once you reopen
it, some sort of automatic conversion takes place and the html code is changed
to a more extensive set of options. The source that originally had only the
simple HTML and BODY tags looks (at the beginning) like the following:

2004-05-25 Thread ETM
I do not understand IMAP and so am at a decided disadvantage
right now. I like TB! and want to use it while considering
a trial AOL subscription. I would not, under any
circumstances, consider AOL if I had to use its mail
program.

I have been successful in setting up IMAP in Outlook
Express. I have been successful in setting up TB! for
downloading AOL, but I am unable to send from TB!. However,
I have absolutely no problem sending AOL from Outlook
Express. What is it in the settings that I am doing wrong
when attempting to set up TB! for AOL IMAP?

And, do I lose the ability to use TB! filtering and folders
in the IMAP account?

They're using a greylisting "technology"... It forces the sending SMTP
server to be delayed (read the message) as it sends a 450 which is a
temporary error message. Your sending mail server SHOULD attempt to
resent at a later time (though you don't have control over it). The
sending server suggests 600 seconds, while the sending SMTP server
won't likely read past the 450 part. People are trying this as an
anti-spam thing, as most spamming software connects directly to the
recipient mail server, and has little respect for RFCs, and as such
would ignore that message, so the mail would be dropped. If your SMTP
server follows RFCs, then it would have been retried at a later time,
and delivered.

Is this while viewing a received message?

If so, then this isn't TB!'s fault but the sending client's fault.
Most clients will wrap upon sending and many do not care if a long URL
is one of the things it's wrapping.

You receive the message with the URL already wrapped and TB! simply
displays the wrapped URL, already broken.

I'll give you a long URL:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1880418592/ref=pd_ts_coop/104-7943297-2153543?v=glance&s=books&n=549066

I really don't expect TB! to wrap this.

RG> I do not mind the URL wrapping on-screen BUT it should still be
RG> recognized as a single link, no?

Well, for the above URL, you can make the viewer smaller and TB! will
still not wrap an unwrapped URL as with the one above.

If you do a set and forget like I do, then you'll not have to check.

Place the signature delimiter in your templates for the list. The
template will nicely preserve them.

When you generate a new message or reply, just stay away from editing
the signature with its delimiter. :)

I'm not getting those here. Are you working with a server side Outbox
or a local Outbox. I'm working with a local Outbox since a server
side Outbox seems to be problematic.

The only real reason for a server side Outbox is if you're in the
habit of partially composing a message at one location and wish to
complete the message you were composing on another machine at another
location. I tend not to do this, so it doesn't really benefit me
having a server side Outbox. Maybe you're in the same situation and
can therefore do away with the buggy misery of using a server side
Outbox.

If the addressbook entries do not already have information in the memo
field, you can select multiple entries, and then Edit->Properties and
select the memo tab to enter the same information in all of them at once.
This will overwrite any existing information in that field though.

I would suggest something based on the following.

Assume for you want to have specific Hungarian, Russian and Czech
language options, and will use English if none of the above apply.

1. Set up a new message template like this:

 [ New Message Template ]
%QInclude(SetLanguage)

Cyrille
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[ End New Message Template ]

2. Create SetLanguage QT to select an appropriate language like this

 [ SetLanguage QT ]
%REM=^%-

Set language based on recipient's addressbook memo entry containing a
line starting "Language:" followed by the language code

If this doesn't exist, use the TLD in the recipient's address

^%-
%-
%_SetLang='%SetPattRegExp="(?im)^Language:\s*[a-z]{2}$"%RegExpMatch=%ABToMemo'
%If:^%_SetLang^<>^^:^%Language=%_SetLang^:^%-
%-
%Rem="No language entry in the addressbook"%-
%-
%_SLDomain='%SetPattRegExp="\.([^\.]*?)$"%RegExpMatch("%ToAddr")%-'
%_SetLang="AM"%-
%-
%If:'%_SLDomain'='cz':'%_SetLang="CZ"'%-
%If:'%_SLDomain'='ru':'%_SetLang="RU"'%-
%If:'%_SLDomain'='hu':'%_SetLang="HU"'%-^
%-
%If:"%_SetLang"="AM":"%QInclude(EN_Template)":%-
%If:"%_SetLang"="CZ":"%QInclude(CZ_Template)":%-
%If:"%_SetLang"="RU":"%QInclude(RU_Template)":%-
%If:"%_SetLang"="HU":"%QInclude(HU_Template)":%-

 [ End SetLanguage QT ]

3. Set up language templates called EN_Template, HU_Template, RU_Template
and CZ_Template that set up the appropriate attributes. I don't speak
Hungarian, Russian or Czech, so I don't know what greetings or other text
you might want in it, but the English one might simply look like this

- [ EN_Template QT ]
%Language=AM%-
%CharSet="ISO-8859-1"
%Qinclude(Greet_All_Recipients)

%Cursor

--
Best regards,
- [ End EN_Template QT ]

Where Greet_All_Recipients is a QT in the library at
http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/Library.html that puts in the first
name of all recipients on the TO list.

So the new message template puts in your name and email address at the
end, and calls the SetLanguage QT to get the right language template.
Then the language template sets the language and charset and language
specific parts of the message.

Now, I haven't checked that it all works precisely as I have set out. I
haven't debugged it, and you would need to create Reply and Forward
message templates in a similar way. However, it shouldn't be too
difficult to do.

Note also that I don't use the %CharSet macro, so I have only guessed
at how it is set.

2004-05-25 Thread Roelof Otten
Hallo TBUDL,

Recently I downloaded TB 2.10.03
Tried to install it, but the install exe would run, that is to say the
task manager claimed it was somewhere in memory, but no installing.
Upon running a second, third or umptieth time would give me as many
ghosts in memory as installing efforts.
Rebooting didn't do any good (except for killing ghosts of course)

Just now I found a way to install it, I extracted the installsation
file with WinRar and copied everything to my TB directory.

I've never encountered this before. I'm running W98 on a PII. The only
change in config after installing 2.04.07 that I recall, is installing
WinRar. And I can't imagine that being the problem. (Well, I might've
updated some programs.)

Anybody encountering the same problem?

H. I was just thinking (and I'm sure I broke something)

Make sure when you're composing the message, you are doing it as
plaintext. Do not create it using the HTML editor. I could see where
maybe that's causing the problem.

I think you have mis-matched quotes, which, when I tried it,
caused the link not to appear - tweaked below (and the
quote characters removed. You still need a < before the HTML>

Very unlikely. Switching between one of your messages and another
message that does have the correct sig delimiter, it's very apparent
using the Rich Text Viewer as to which message has a proper sig
delimiter. Everything below a proper sig delimiter is light grey in
color.

Turn on the rich text viewer in:

Options, Preferences, Viewer/Editor, and set the "View plaintext
messages" to Rich Text/HTML viewer.

Send yourself an e-mail and look at your message that's returned. Now
compare it with the on in the sent folder. If your sent message shows
everything below the sig delimiter as light grey but your received
test message does not, then we can probably say it's your SMTP server
that's doing it, and if so, they are munging your message body which
is wrong.

If neither your sent nor received message show light grey below the
sig delimiter, then let me know and we'll troubleshoot further from
there.

C> Couldn't it be the auto-wrap or auto-format features which strip
C> end of line spaces away

It's possible. Try turning them off.

C> -3) Couldn't it be possible that some ISP strip off end of line spaces???

Possible again, the above test will tell.

C> -4) How do you, moderators, filter the bad delimiters out?

Using Rich Text/HTML viewer. It's *immediately* apparent when someone
does not have a proper sig delimiter as it's *not* grey below the sig
delimiter.

I've been trying for the last ten minutes to duplicate your results with no success,
so I must be doing something stupid.

I did exactly what you suggested, using a reply. I didn't want to inundate the list,
so I sent email to myself.

I even copied your source to an entirely new message with no luck.

I created a new message and typed the information.

So, given that I need to put this in a template. Can you duplicate your success using
a template? I certainly cannot. I'm a bit frustrated. Any other ideas on what I'm
doing wrong?

signature delimiter

2004-05-25 Thread Cyrille
Hello Mr Moderator,

During the last three days about 10% of the list traffic has been
about wrong signature delimiters. (!!)
The problem was most of the time the missing space after the two dashes.

In theory the mistake might be at 4 different places:
1) the end-user,
2) TB,
3) the Internet service provider or
4) the moderator.

-1) I have been trying both: Manually typing my "line break - dash -
dash - space - line break, and inserting the %UMPCUTHERE macro of U.M.P.
(TextUtils ver. 1.0 by Stanislav V. Mikov).
Each time I got your exhortation.

-2) To be honest, I do not know how to check whether I have the space
after the two dashes. The praised "free caret" or "virtual space"
method of MicroEd makes it impossible to know whether you have a space
at the end of a line or not.

Couldn't it be the auto-wrap or auto-format features which strip end
of line spaces away

-3) Couldn't it be possible that some ISP strip off end of line spaces???

-4) How do you, moderators, filter the bad delimiters out?

This message comes without signature or delimiter...

Is there a (semi-)automated way to insert such a line in hundreds of AB
entries?

I find your proposition very helpful, and I would like to use it.
But I am afraid of manually adding a line to all my AB entries.

And since reality is more complicated than any theory I guess that I
will forget sometimes to add this line to each new contact. That is
why I dream about the following solution:

When composing a message (new or reply),
1) your QT could get the language information from the AB memo field,
2) if there is no such info, the recipient's address domain extension
is used to determine the language,
3) if this is not possible (".com" or Slovak using a Czech domain,
etc.), in this case there should be a possibility to call manually a
QT (as Miguel Urech described on Saturday in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED])
And depending on this language information
1) %CharSet is defined,
2) %Language is defined and
3) different text templates are used

Sounds good, doesn't it? - Who writes the code? (-:

If I get this working I will uninstall MS Outlook from my machine. (-:

Reply Address - How To Insert From Template Using HTML

2004-05-25 Thread Russell L. Farabee
Hello To All,

I have tried every way possible, but I cannot seem to have a working reply email
address link except in the MicroEd Editor. I am trying to send out a group of mass
mail emails to individuals (each addressed to an individual) and for reasons not worth
getting into, I need to use HTML. I've searched through all of the archives and found
no answer and haven't heard back from support.

So far, it seems the only way to do that is to open each email individually and insert
the URL for the email address using the toolbar.

Is there some work around? Perhaps make one master email and in some way to use
regular expressions to then send from the address book? I'm pretty much lost here.
The templates work great with the MicroEd editor, but when you start trying to use
them with html, you lose all of the benefits of html. I can't figure out how to
format different parts of the text or otherwise do anything other than type in the
message. While I hate to resort to Outlook, I'm beginning to think that may be my
only solution, although I (strange as it may seem) have NEVER used it. Another
learning curve.

I am sending this request to both the TBUDL and TBTECH lists.

Applying A Filter To 'Sent' Folder

is it possible to apply a filter to the 'Sent' folder?

What I'd like is the 'Sent' folder to have a number of sub-folders

Is it possible to do this automatically with a filter? I tried
applying a filter to the 'Outbox' in the hope that once a message left

folder. Needless to say it was not successful.

I have one called "unwanted". When friends send me emails that are old
jokes forwarded forever, or other junk which isn't really spam because
people I regularly email thought I would be interested in it, POPFile
accurately classifies it for filtering to a separate folder.

This is what really impresses me about POPFile. In many cases there is
little obvious difference between the emails I want my friends to send

If you want to adjust the "To Address" and have the macro
"%to=""%to="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"%-" in your template, the To address
will only change if you first adjust the message body and then
change the "To address" OR ... ad this line before the "To macro"

%ModifyOnce("To")

Where does Bat 2.0+ save attachments? Older versions had a separate
folder but I can't seem to find one with this.

I used POPFile for a while but I don't like that I have to look for
the saved message every now and then to train it. That much nicer with
BayesIt! But with POPFile I had one advantage: I can filter the spam
mails and delete it from the server as soon the filter is trigger.
With the spam filter system of TB this isn't possible.

The nice think with POPFile is also that you can have categories: I
made one for virus files :-)

Something other that annoys me with the spam plugins of TB is that you
can automatically move mail marked as Junk to the Junk folder. But if
you mark it as not junk it is not transferred to the inbox or even
better send through the filter engine.

I think I will return to POPFile after my holyday...

Anti-Virus for me is senseless with a proxy. There is no additional
benefit. So I bought AVG which comes along with a TB plugin.

I couldn't agree with you more; especially about the 'external' bit.
Half the messages on the list seem to about getting plug-ins to work.

Marc,
That is either automatic are you have he press the update button on the
AVG console. You need to have the AVG anti virus system installed, not just
the plugin. I am using Version7 which is the paid for version, but you can
download version6 which is free and I am assuming will use the same plugin.

I was telling you the version number of the plugin so you could check if
it was updated with the virus definition file.

I do not know if there is a separate plugin download.

I used to use PopFile, but found its memory overhead a little
overbearing. I switched to K9 for a while which works in much the same
way but has a Windows native interface and much lower overhead.

Now I use the BayesIT plugin and all seems well.

For AV, I use the built-in hooks to the Kaspersky AV product. The new
Personal 5.0 has an entirely rebuilt interface and shows many speed
improvements, especially in relation to checking email and
attachements.
