I use Thunderbird at work where I have modest email needs. I use The Bat at home
because I have become dependent upon:

1) Per folder templates (and quick templates)
2) Macros

If Thunderbird had these features, I'd drop The Bat immediately because of it's
poor html implementation and lack of image links.

Other features in which The Bat is superior but which I don't absolutely need:
message flags, memos, and parking. Threaded views. Don't have Thunderbird
in front of me now, but I think that message searching is more flexible in The
Bat.

Hello Duncan,

D what features did you miss from The Bat?

I'd have to say that for me it's the ability to manage my POP folders
*after* the initial retrieval, and the reason I use K9 instead of
BayesIt.

Once I've checked an account with TB! (as opposed to TB) any
subsequent check from dial-up or mobile devices is free of list mail,
large attachments and SPAM.

Otherwise, I could probably live with the other (probably temporary)
shortfalls for the sake of a true multi-platform solution.

On the subject of message indexing/searching, I'm still aching from
the demise of Bloomba, which really seemed to be going somewhere new.

I missed:
- address book templates
- virtual folders

but also:
- less-than-perfect HTML rendering and
- still-not-quite-satisfactory IMAP support

In other words, the last two features (plus better interoperability
with other software) would make me want to switch to Thunderbird.

As long as there are no address book templates (or another feature to
get the same functionality) I won't switch.

What I miss most is the templates. Be it New or Reply or Address Book,
I can't think of an easier way to customize than with The Bat!'s Quick
Templates, which even can include Regular Expressions.

The selection of different SMTP servers for different accounts is
quite cumbersome in T'bird, but easy with The Bat!.

Filter options are more plentiful in The Bat!.

I might find more items if I worked with T'bird more than I do.

T'bird has its pros, particularly the handling of GnuPG, but it isn't
a viable replacement of The Bat! for me. A meager substitute at
best... ;-)

What little annoyances I see with IMAP are nowhere near serious enough
to give up the good points of TB! I really don't care for Thunderbird
at all. I will occasionally go there if I want to manage folders or
straighten something out that I have messed up, but wouldn't want to
be there all the time at all.

YMMV. What I've seen in newsletters and commercial email (e.g. from
my bank, from Amazon etc) has been ugly at times and very decent when
loaded in Opera.

Also, an option to load the images for safe senders or even by manual
request would be nice.

I think it is a very nice alternative for people who do not use all the
extra's within the Bat!

Thunderbird with Enigmail is/are working like a charm with GPG!

Can't say that the Bat! is working like that with GPG :-(

Had absolutely no problems with this so far. With TheBat any html mail

I don't use IMAP regularly, only to connect to the Exchange server at

Hiding addresses in a group

2005-09-28 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
I created a new group, Meeting, under Personal address book for
mailings to about a dozen people who are on a committee. I selected
the group for e-mail, and the To: came up with Meeting list.
However, the recipients did not see Meeting list but the e-mail
addresses for all of the committee members.

I tried selecting the list from the BCC: pane, but only the first name
in the list appeared. Yes, I could select each name individually from
the BCC: pane, but then why do I need a group except to remind me who
is in the group.

So, how do I send e-mail to a predefined group without the recipients
seeing the others addresses?

Thank you.

2005-09-28 Thread Granville Cousins
Hello TBUDL,

I have a data base with approximately 2,000 members. On the occasions
that I need to mass mail my group I do so using The Bat!. What happens
if I have entered an email address into my data base which is
incorrectly addressed then The Bat! refuses to send any of the other
emails and I have to go through my entire data base to find the one
email that is causing the problem. Why can't The Bat! send all the
valid emails and leave the incorrect ones in the outbox. This is what
I would expect to happen from this email client. Or do I need to
configure The Bat! to do this?
