Do you mean your TB is installed and runs on the D: drive, not the

Well, that's good to know. But doesn't REGEDIT's export/import
function overwrite the registry when you import from a previously
exported registry file?

Too late. Since I have Carbonite configured to backup on-the-fly
(recommended by Carbonite) it seems it's already been overwritten. I
have posted an email query to Carbonite tech support for their opinion
on all this.

It save the reg file in the directory the batch file was launched
from.

The backup save the Bat directory and its sub folders.
After a Windows re-install the original directory is still there (it's
on the D drive) so I just double click the previous night's reg file
and I'm back in business. If for any reason the original is lost or
corrupt I can just copy it back from the backup.

That's not an easy thing to do. The registry is being read/written to
several times a second so it's been updated many times by the time you
log on. You can't over-write it with a backup (except in safe mode you
can boot from a previous good copy) and regedit only reads the live
registry.

You need to do that before your backup is over-written by the missing

Facinating! Whoda thunk it!

But let me make sure I understand what you're doing here. Your command
line seems to indicate that the /e switch causes REGEDIT to launch and
automatically create a file called "thebat.reg" which will contain the
key called HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT, correct? If so, where is
this file stored since no drive or directory(folder) is specified?

On the other hand, if you have TB perform an automatic backup every
night doesn't that make your efforts unnecessary? I am assuming that
restoring TB from a TB backup, from within TB automatically takes care
of the registry info.

On the third hand, if I were to import the entire "The Bat!" folder
from the off-site Carbonite backup couldn't I also import the
registry? I assume the registry is a file contained somewhere within
the bowels of Vista and if so, may be contained in the Carbonite
backup.

JG> If your backup seems to contain these missing messages can you import

Well, I'm not sure. I have not tried using the import function in the

I'll try it.

That would have been handy to know, and I appreciate the info, but as
you can see from my other posts, knowing where those files are doesn't
help. If you restore them from an off-site backup, TB thinks it's a
new installation.

Re: Help-Partial message loss!

2008-11-15 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Fellow list members,

With everyone's help here's what I've found so far:

On her computer running Vista I found a folder called "The Bat!" which
is located in C:\USERS\JUNE\APPDATA\ROAMING (her name is June). This
folder contains all the folders in her account with all the .TBB and
.TBI folders in each sub-folder.

If I move the entire The Bat! folder to the desktop (to protect it)
and then import the same folder from the Carbonite backup into the
C:\USERS\JUNE\APPDATA\ROAMING folder and then launch TB, TB looks just
like a new installation but with her account present. However, there's
nothing IN her account. None of her user-created sub-folders are
there. It makes it look as if TB! had never been used. I even tried
the same procedure with the individual .TBB folders with the same
result ie, new account with nothing in it.

Apparently TB stores other needed parameters elsewhere other than in
the The Bat! folder. Perhaps the registry?

Before anyone thinks of me as a dunderhead, yes, I did set up TB when
I installed it to do automatic backups. However, dunderhead that I am,
I set it up to perform the automatic backups only every seven days.
Doh! I now have set it to perform the autobackup every day. The horse
is gone but the barn door is now locked.

I do not currently see any way out of this dilemma and must consider
her wrath when she I tell her I goofed.

Look in %APPDATA%\The Bat (or %APPDATA%\RIT\The Bat) instead, as newer
versions store mail in per-user locations.

check Documents and Settings in C drive, if data are there, in this case,
name of folder can be The Bat! and not MAIL.

Hello MFPA,

Something very strange here. If I look in *my* computer under PROGRAM
FILES-THE BAT! there is a folder called MAIL which when opened shows
folders for all accounts. If an account folder is opened it shows
everything pertaining to that account including .TBB and .TBI folders.

However, on my wife's computer the MAIL folder is completely missing
even though TB seems to function normally. Now I don't understand how
TB would continue to work without her MAIL folder. I'll check the
Carbonite backup for her missing MAIL folder.

I'll write back with an update.

The folder %appdata% contains nothing relating to TB! and the folder

I think in very early versions of TB! the mail was there. Since I
discovered TB! at version 2.x the default has been %appdata%\The Bat!,
which might even equate to %email%. For each mail folder you should
find a messages.tbb and messages.tbi file (different extensions if you
use OTFE). The TBB file is the message base and the TBI is the index

I know nothing about carbonite but I would expect so if a backup was
made when the messages were present, unless the backup was overwritten
since they disappeared.

I would suggest renaming the message.tbb and .tbi files currently in
the folder (in case you need to revert to them) and copying the ones
from your backup into the folder, then firing up TB! and seeing what
messages you have.

Help-Partial message loss!

2008-11-15 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Fellow list members,

My wife had messages dated from 10-31 to 11-13 disappear from her
inbox. All other messages seem to be there. There are only 5 messages
currently residing in the inbox with a received date of Nov. and all
were from yesterday the 14th.

I did a search of *all* TB! folders for the string "Bob" in the header
because she remembers a message having come from "Bob" yesterday the
14th but it couldn't be found.

I looked on her C: drive in the folder called "The Bat!" contained in
the "program files" folder but I don't see anything in the "The Bat!"
folder which would seem to contain all messages.

I use Carbonite as a backup for this computer so presumably Carbonite
has a copy of the missing messages but again, I can't see where
they're stored. The Carbonite "The Bat!" folder contains exactly the
same things as the "The Bat!" folder on her C: drive. Where does TB!
keep all it's messages?

Assuming the location of the messages is known, can I simply copy the
messages from the Carbonite backup to the same location on her C:
drive?

Her computer is running the Vista OS with version 3.99.3 of TB!
installed.
