This behavior was reported from some of our corporate customers and also
sent to Ritlab's bug tracking system. Actually nobody at Ritlabs seems
to care about this severe misbehavior, leading to removing TB! from some
of the customer's desktops and servers. Version 1.53t seems to be the
last version which was able to smooothly run 'networked' in c/s mode.
Obviously none of the customers want to downgrade - they simply quit

As Marck already pointed out: it's the latter, of course. I got a lot of

If people want to share experience or simply ask for help online, there
should be a way to do that. (Verbal) Contributions from members are of

from 1st hand...
To service corporate users/customers also (which generally don't use

A message board puts two interesting parties together: on one side

This enhances s/w support extensively and also gives some marketing

   1. I don't think message boards are the place an absolute beginner
   will go to.

That's wrong as evidence shows (may be true on boards just starting,
with low number of members)

   2. Information about *where* to find help is much more important
   than another forum.

Help.hlp won't be used as a source for help, internet search or
phonecalls are used to save time and effort...

   3. It is best to try out what you try to learn, hence mailing list
   for e-mail.

that's true for all kind of support you get, wether it comes from a list
or a board - best of all is sending a complete solution because this
frees user from experiments...

   4. To answer questions one has to know the answer. If seasoned TB
users aren't on the message board, beginners won't get answers.

see my other message. Not true on high frequented boards. There are
skilled users most of the time.

   5. From the above follows that a message boards can become quickly
an unpaid support department of RITLabs since only a few people
answer the same questions over and over again.

Yes.

When beginners aren't beginners anymore they will leave.

Not unconditionally true. See my other message.

On these MLs nearly all of us started out as beginners and are now
seasoned; we stay here to help *mutually*.

Admitted. But still true for boards. Coexistance of MLs and boards gives
best choice on how to get most out of others.

 6. Message boards are only useful if they either aren't frequented
very often or you be there always. For a pay-per-minute user the last
 option is not viable.

Actually most boards offer email-notifications when s.o. anwers your
question, or offer comprehensive search functions - hence online time is
not a big problem. In the case of little budgets, mailing lists are the
best solution.

   7. Instead of just having TB open and working with it you need to
   have open your browser, too.

Well, this is no argument at all... Guess your browser is an important
tool to surf the internet anyway - whenever you need additional
informations.

   8. If one wants a message board, just start it and see what happens.

Unrestrainedly correct.

Actually our official German forum is frequented by more than 1300

additional 'channel' for users who want fast response/solutions on

Additionally an FAQ server was set up which is maintained by several

I see what you mean and I see no way of changing this behaviour since
the address book invoked from the message editor doesn't have a
 sorting option.

You can sort alphabetical even in the addressbook invoked by the editor
by clicking the header bar 'Name' or 'Email' or whatever - but the way
name(s) is(are) displayed depends on the setting in the addressbook-tab
'General | Display name as'.

So if you want to display 'lastname, firstname' please feel free to
adjust it as you like.

Ok, seems you didn't notice that it /did/ a sorting anyway. Select an

no match you'll get the /current selcted message/ in return (which

When the proxy is properly configured there's no problem (port mapping:

server port 25). You should _not_ connect to the remote server directly,
use the proxy's address for that purpose. Configuration of account
depends on proxy. Read manual.

not sure if this can be configured to use these ports. For example,
can TB be configured to use an HTTP proxy? Or 110/25? I've tried pine,
Pegasus, etc and none seem to be able to do this...

Are you behind a _firewall_ or a _proxy_? If you're behind a firewall
with ports 110 + 25 open for _out_going connex you should be able to
connect to your remote mailserver. Anyway it depends on the kind of
firewall or proxy how to handle these requests. Try to contact your
sysadmin or try to get hold on the manuals. There's no general rule how
to manage access. The mentioned ports represent POP3, SMTP, HTTP and
Telnet - guess configured for _out_going packets.

If there's a firewall, is it hardware (blackbox), sw based on filtering
at application or packet level - there are several choices :-)

BTW: I'm using a private LAN with an internal mailserver, a personal
firewall (@Guard) _and_ a proxy (WinGate) - all on one machine and never
had any problems after configuration was done.

Hello Listmembers,

On Wed, 22 Dec 1999 at 16:22:46 [GMT -0500] Ali Martin wrote:

 Wasn't? Really?

 Yeah who speaks in riddles.

Would you be so kind as to expand on your knowledge on this?

It's quite easy and you may say 'this could have been my idea' :-). But
I only can tell about my environment (I'm using an internal mailserver
which contacts the addressee's mailserver directly. Which means: I do
_not_ send my mail with The Bat! to the mailserver of my ISP). Outgoing
messages are temporarily stored in the queue directory of my mailserver
until they're sent out - which occurs every 5 minutes after the receipt
of outgoing messages.

Anyway, here's the concept:

Prologue:
I happily own a cute little program called sr32 (SearchReplace)
 |- you should have something similar to do the job -|

Main subject:
Create an outgoing filter containing any characters you want to catch.
Go to 'Actions' check 'Run external program', enter the appropriate
commandline (E:\WebTools\sr\Sr32.exe %1 e.g.), check 'Wait for
completion' - and that's all you have to do with filtering.

Epilogue:
you have to preconfigure sr (or any other prog) to:
a) look in the directory where outgoing mails are stored and
b) look for the string 'S/N my serial'. (I use the complete line to
avoid mismatches)

When I hit 'Send' sr pops up and I have to hit 'Replace All' within sr
to get rid of all occurrences of serial numbers...

You must admit that if s.o. wants get rid of his serial, it's not that
difficult to do the trick this way. There are probably other programs
which will do the job also sufficiently.

Dieter
