Title: Re: [T/N: 7232C0F3]: Upgrading The Bat! G'day Richard, Apologies for the way this comes through, but while the upgrade has gone through without a hitch as far as my message base and filters are concerned, my message templates have become horribly screwed up, hence the poor format of this message. To give you an idea of what is going on, here is what my reply template ends up being when I somply press the reply button. G'day +ACU-CapitalFirst+AD0AJQ-OFromFName, +ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-Reply+AF8-Ref+ACI +ACU-NOReadConfirm+ACU-Cursor+ACU-Quotes +ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-Signature+AF8-TB+ACI +ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-The+AF8-Bat+AF8-Beta+AF8-Discussion+AF8-Signature+ACI +ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-TB+AF8-Headers+ACI +ACU-SetEditor+AD0-1 +ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-Default+AF8-Delay+ACI- Now, those up with everything will know whats going however I have not the foggiest idea as to what the +ACU- and +ACI means and why it is there. You can see what it was supposed to show from my previous message in this thread. Basically I have used separate quick templates that can be used across multiple folders and groups and then they get called up as %QT in a particular group etc. This way, if I need to change something, I only have to do it once and it ends up automatically across all the groups that use it. Anyone have any idea as to why this change has happened? Thanks. I am going to enter a sigdash even though I have no signature as I am mot a big fish eater. Well, you know what I mean :D Hopefully it comes down this time as the other thing is that it lost the from setting and used my default. One other thing is I have lost the message list tabs and am having to ferret around to find out how to get them back. I was trying to get rid of all the unnecessary windows like the quick reply window and the one at the root of an account. Much better to access them from menus and toolbars. That will learn me. How do I merge two message bases?
Hi, I finally received the recovered hard drive data from my failed hard drive from the data recovery service. The drive with the recovered data is mounted in an external hard drive case and the data is there, but now do I merge it with the data that I have on the new drive on my notebook? The import function only has options where the other data has already been exported, and the synchronise function needs to have the data on a functioning system. I would prefer to be able to just copy or bring in the data from the recovered data files, but if this is not going to be possible, I do have The Bat! installed on a spare Win98 system. Do get this message base onto that computer, would it simply be a matter of copying the relevant recovered data files over to it and then doing a synchronise? Are there any other utilities that can help out here? Thanks. -- Regards, Ian A. New Install Crashes
Hi I've just copied my old TheBat! v1.?? files to a new PC (the old one's toast!). I get as far as specifying the network config and the program crashes - no error messages, it just isn't there anymore. When I try and run it again, it crashes immediately. Since the files could have been corrupt, I downloaded v1.62 off the web site and installed it in a new folder - same result. I did the same with V2 and got almost identical results, the only difference was that this time it offered to tell Microsoft about it! Everything else is working OK - any ideas? Bayesit configuration - help needed
Hello TBUDL, Since I'm getting inundated with spam I decided to try the recommended plug-in. I have met a configuration problem. I'm using The Bat! 2.11.2 with BayesIt 0.5.5. I am on dial-up so I do not download larger messages , preferring to leave on the server for later action using Mail Despatcher. Hence, I have a filter which , on the next logon, matches all messages in the Inbox and deletes from server. Now, to the problem if I configure BayesIt to automatically move spam messages to the Junk folder, these messages are not in the Inbox at the time of the next logon, hence do not match, and do not get deleted off the server! So. I am trying to configure BayesIt to leave the messages it regards as spam in the inbox but merely mark them read. There is a check box to do this (on The Bat! preferences anti-spam leaf) but , although it is checked it is also greyed out and does not appear to function (NB I have both the 'delete' and 'move' checkboxes unchecked). Is this normal and does anyone know what is going on? Perhaps unrelated, if I go to The Bat! preferences plug-ins leaf, highlight BayesIt and click configure the Rules button for setting black/white lists is similarly greyed out. Again, is this normal? I guess the main problem is the seemingly poor help available for BayesIt. Is there a help file somewhere I haven't located? I'd like to know what all the options mean! missing common folders
Hello TBUDL, I am using The Bat! v1.61. A funny thing happened the other day; all of my common folders disappeared. The data is all still there, but the folders have completely disappeared within The Bat!. The funny thing is, the next day one of my folders and the Trash bin reappeared. I went to re-add the other folder that is missing but when I went to do so The Bat! said that the folder was already being used for another folder (..which makes me think The Bat still has track of it somewhere?) Does anyone have any idea? Can I just recreate the folder and expect everything to reappear if I specify the same directory for it, or will all my messages go poof? Re: square brackets and rfc822
Allie, It's just that no is saying you shouldn't either. Obviously not! g The problem is that such a large proportion of the messages on TB lists suffer from an overabundance of autogenerated fluff. Marck gave what I consider a valid reason for signing PGP (or similar) sigs are unneccessary on public mailing lists because everyone is equally unknown to everyone else. Whether we are who we say we are is simply irrelevant. Even for moderators! The only thing that really matters is the content of our messages. If the persons who use the names Allie Martin or Marck Pearlstone appear to write useful messages and moderate with moderation, then it's all the same to me who or what is behind those names. You may be raving lunatics or aliens from another dimension for all I care as long as your activity on this list is relevant and useful. In the context of the list, a PGP sig only proves someone is capable of installing and using PGP, and little else. How's my intro line for instance? Do you like it? :-) Apart from the PGP bit it's beautifully restrained. g I can't shorten my signature any more though and it's well within the 6 line netiquette limit. I always thought it was four lines, but never mind. Obviously, things like sigs and cookies that come after the main message content are less disrupting than stuff that comes before it. -- Ian Petersen Current Ver: 1.60c FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

David, When I start reading a mailinglist message I start with the quoted material or when I know the contents of the quotes I even start with the text below the quotes. Well, obviously that is what I try to do too. The problem is that it is not always clear where the actual message content starts. And when I use my 800x600 laptop the intros, dates and stuff can fill so much that the message itself is off the screen. In such cases I simply skip to the next message ... -- Ian Petersen Current Ver: 1.60c FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: PGP again (was: square brackets and rfc822)
Dierk, a) a message and a mail address belong together, and b) a message has not been tinkered with. They are both important things in many, if not most, email situations. But I still maintain they are irrelevent on an informal public discussion list. There are good reasons to use PGP ... always. some people don't like it for perhaps equally good reasons I'm not in any way against PGP or other forms of digital security. They are undoubtedly very important tools in modern digital communication. However, I reserve the right to find it just a little comical that people feel the need to digitally sign their messages in places such as this. But as Greg so wisely said, I think we will have to agree to differ. g -- Ian Petersen Current Ver: 1.60c FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: square brackets and rfc822
Marck, I'm the moderator here. When I make a statement it needs to be verifiably from me. Don't you think you are taking your role here a little too seriously? After all, we are not talking trade secrets here or national security. I have been a member of scores of mailing-lists in the ten years I've had access to e-mail and I've never seen a list-mom have need of proving his identity. Nor have I ever experienced anyone posing as a false list-mom. Is that a common problem on the TB lists? PGP signing is welcomed and not discouraged on this list since it is a function of TB Of course, there's nothing wrong with the odd PGP signature now and then in the course of explaining or discussing TB's features. But just because TB has many features does not mean we all have to use every feature on every message to the list. The flow of a mailing list is very important - being able to easily and quickly follow a conversation thread. Interruptions in the form of unneccessary felicitations, dates, quotes, cookies and signatures just make the conversations less easy to follow and thus less useful for everyone involved. The TB lists are some of the noisiest I've experienced in this respect, which is rather ironic, since we are here to discuss an email client that basically is a tool to make communication easier, quicker and more pleasurable! -- Ian Petersen Current Ver: 1.60c FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Marck, You have to adopt one of the macro-ised quote formatters that abound on the FAQ to get round that. Alternatively, you could stop inflicting the list with unnecessary PGP signatures. Re: Importing from Outlook
Victor, I've been reading through the list and there's this mysterious email client called VA that's being talked about. There's nothing mysterious about Virtual Access (VA)! It's probably more well known amongst CIX (a british conferencing service) or Compuserve users. It has existed in various guises (Wigwam, Teepee, PowWow and VA) for over ten years. Aside from being an excellent OLR for CIX and CIS it is also a very capable mail and news client. It can handle an essentially unlimited number of mail accounts and newsservers. It's main strengths are excellent threading and very robust handling of a large messagebase. My VA messagebase is, for example, about 2 GB and the programme is as fast and stable as it was the day I installed it about seven years ago. I have heard of others with messagebases of over 8 GB. Sadly, VA has not been actively developed for over two years now and does not support stuff like outgoing HTML mail, Unicode, yEnc encoding etc. but otherwise it is fully functional for good old-fashioned mail and news. Hence the influx of bemused VA users recently infesting this forum. There are rumours that at least parts of VA may be made open sorce at some point but, as yet, it is not certain if or when that will happen. You can take a look here at http://www.atlantic-coast.com/va/ if you're interested. -- Ian Petersen Current Ver: 1.60c FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Importing from Outlook
Miguel, Last VA release, version 5.51, was exactly released on Fe. 26th, 2001. Yes, but the operative word in my statement is actively. The beta team had had build 315 a good many months before it was officially released (Sept. 2000) and Pete had only made very minor tweaks for a year or so before that. Greg, I don't believe *bemused* is applicable. Speak for yourself. I'm definitely bemused - but that may have nothing to do with TB or VA! g Your reply reminded me of a little wishlist item I have for TB: It would be good if TB recognised the common forms of emphasis like _underscores_, *asterisks* and /slashes/ and subtituted these for underlined, bold and italic respectively.
