Where would you archive them to? If you are reaching your Gmail size
limit, you'll need another account to move them to. This could be
done with filters.

If you're not near the limit, you could create another folder called
Archive and move the old emails there again using filters or even
manually.

TB! does use offline storage for POP3 accounts so you might be able to
do something creative there.

Which New Message Template?

2018-03-05 Thread Tony Hoare
Hi All,

Does anyone know how to find which templates exist and are active?

You can have a template at the account level, the folder level within an

I need to update the new mail template but I have used it (with minor
variations) in many folders. Is there a way to find them all?

I suspected this as most Councils are probably Outlook/Exchange users and no

They would have saved it as a straight export/save from Outlook.

The only way to read would be to use Outlook.

However, I have just sent myself an email with a reading request on it. I read

This is a major surprise for me as I thought I never sent Read Receipts. I am

This is true for outlook.office365.com using IMAP but does not happen on my

I have subscribed to all folders except All Mail. I'm not a massive
Gmail user and this was done many moons ago so I can't remember how
this came about.

I believe that Gmail's IMAP implementation is not like everyone else's
in that Gmail stores all mail in a single folder and use Labels to
separate it out. It then presents these separate labels as separate
IMAP folders. Multiple messages can have multiple Labels and then
appear in multiple IMAP folders.

[Later] I have just discovered for myself that in Gmail web browser
you can click on Setting/Labels and manage which labels Gmail will
present to IMAP clients using the 'Show In IMAP' checkbox.

TB! as a mail client simply shows what it sees.

I hope that helps.

If you're referring to the drop-down list which appears when you click on the

arrow down (not cursor down) to the offending address and press delete.

If you're not referring to the above drop-down list and I've totally missed

You're spot on. Some addresses can't be deleted that way which is the

Thanks for that. Some can be deleted from the history but other addresses

Do the settings available at Options | Preferences | Address History not help?

about 40, the optimal situation of having none has always eluded me.)

Thanks for the suggestion but no it didn't help.

I have addresses being suggested that are not in the address book, nor
in the list in the Addresses tab. This address is single quoted and
also double quoted and I want to remove it as I also have it correctly
in the Address Book.

Any ideas?

Ever since then, there is one of the accounts where, no matter that I

empty/purge/compact the local TB! Inbox, 92 messages keep re-appearing.

If this is an IMAP account, you can try emptying the cache. It will

If you go to Folder | Maintenance Centre, you can click select all

to select or de-select), tick boxes for which of the four maintenance
actions () you wish to perform on all the selected folders, then click
start. As I said, I don't know if this works for IMAP or just POP

RE: Secure E-mail again!

2014-02-06 Thread Tony Brookes
They may have specified port 587 for SSL, but for TLS the port should
be 465 as The Bat! automatically selects. This works fine with German
1und1, and it has done so for years, so I suggest you try that port
 too.

Port 587 is submission, and it uses either no encryption, or STARTTLS (SSL/TLS
might work, but usually doesn't). Port 465 is smtps, and it always uses SSL or
TLS.

Note that some Microsoft's programs incorrectly call STARTTLS just TLS.

Thanks Peter, thanks Jernej,

Unfortunately the plot thickens - none of the combinations of port settings,
TLS/STARTTLS/REGULAR dropdowns with or without 'Must use Secure Communications'
set behind this works with this provider in The Bat! For me.

I tried in Outlook and it works using the settings attached (also uploaded to
http://www.tonybro.com/Outlook.JPG as attachment was stripped last time).

I am at a loss on this one.

The closest I get is an error from The Bat! Saying 'Message not sent. Server

Thanks MAU,

Authentication settings are as follows: -

'Perform SMTP Authentication (RFC 2554)' is ticked

Use Specific Settings is active with username and password

'Require secure authentication' is ticked

The Biometric elements are greyed out

'Use POP before SMTP authentication' is NOT ticked now, following Feli's

In my case I needed Job title field from the address book and using

To avoid the guessing, is there an up to date reference?

BTW, if you need the job title in your template during a mass mailing

You can add it to the template. Change the mail template to HTML
and use the image icon to add the image. If you want, you can make a
template with the logo(s) and assign it a key combination to insert it where
 you want
Only do one template at once. There is a bug in there and you must
close the templates and reopen to do a second one or you will have a
mess (try it and just be prepared to fix it) :))

That seems to do it. When I send the mail to myself, TB shows an
attachment (download headers only) but when I read it, the attachment
paper clip is removed.

Adding the logs as an included template is a great idea so that I don't
have to send the logo for internal company messages but I can simply
add them for external messages. Thanks!

Since it doesn't appear with all messages, but only for those
earler than August 3, I'd suspect that the problem is a corrupted
message received on August 3. Open the Connection Center for her
account and dispatch all messages on server with it, then delete
the last August 3 message and see if that stops the message. If it
does not, repeat until the message goes away.

I've had similar problems with corrupt messages at the server end,
and once the bad message is located and deleted, all works well again.

If she downloads the messages to local storage and deletes them
from the server, then of course this won't work and the message
would indicate corruption in the local folder. In that case,
restoring from a backup would be the only feasible solution.

If it's an IMAP folder, you can try to clear the cache.

I have also report a bug if the subject on a message has an opening
parenthesis without a matching closing parenthesis which can stall
message downloading.

Good luck.

Hello Robert,
In all cases, backup fails with
 Error Reading File

I had this persistently for a very long time and reported it in the
Beta forum. I believe I raised a support ticket that got lost.

My recollection is that it is something to do with account
properties. Try deselecting that to see if the restore completes.

I never solved the problem until I reinstalled TB! This also fixed a
number of other persistent problems with filters. I had upgraded over
the years from 1.62 to the current 5.x version so I guess an
incompatibility crept in over that time.

But as far as I know, the imap folders can be remote (on imap

I seem to recall that older version of TB would create local folders
by default but the latest versions create all folder on the server
now.

Right click the account/Manage IMAP folders. You'll see all the IMAP
folders. You can create server folder there and then move local folder

move messages from one folder to another and gave the message Sizes

Re: Deleting address history - SOURCE OF ADDRESSES

2013-03-29 Thread Tony Hoare
Hello MAU,

The drop-down list (menu, as you call it) that appears when you start
typing is a list that is built on the fly with addresses from Address
Book, or To history or both, that match the characters that you have
typed so far. You can see that it is built on the fly if, once it
appears, you type one or more characters. So, as the shown list as such
does not exist in any file (like the To history does) you cannot delete
from it. If you want to delete one or more addresses, you will have to
do so from the AB or the To history.

You can set which addresses appear in the address dropdowns for To:,
CC:, BCC:

Go to Preferences -- Viewer/Editor -- Message Headers

Edit the header you want e.g. To:

Go to the editing tab and you'll see a variety of sources in
'While-you-type Actions' for suggestions and auto-complete.

TB! really does have it all.

titles (Dr. Professor, etc.). Frequently their titles are part of
their names that preced the email address. In the case of those
people whom I know personally, I like to address them by their first
names, and have a reply template to do exactly that. TheBat ignores
the template and starts the replay e-mail with Dr., Proffessor, etc.)

It was suggested in an earlier instance of this thread that possibly I
have the addressee in more than one place, thus conhfusing TheBat.
Although I do have a few of these cases like this, the improper
 salutation appears in all cases.

It seems that, come what may, TheBat looks to the account templates and
not the templates in the address book.

 Thanks.
As I understand it, TheBat can use templates from the account, folder,
address book group and address book contact. Have you tried a template
at the individual contact level? I have at least one (for my wife!)

AB Contact: Select a specific AB Contact then right-click and select

figured out which entry of the auto-complete list is selected and
copied to the To: address?

For me it is always the same one but not the first one in the list,
not by name, not by address. No pattern I can see.

Try backspacing over your typing and type the same again - I get a
different item selected each time and sometimes no item.

Talking to myself ...

After much messing around, it seems that you *can* delete history this
way BUT the addresses that appear in the drop down are in fact from
the address book - which can't be deleted. You need to hit the double
down arrow to get the history.

TB does not honour the Add Items to the Instant Address Popup
setting in the Group Properties. Therefore, all address book addresses
appear in the drop down.

What's more, if the address is a member of multiple address book groups, then it
will appear multiple times - each time rendered slightly differently.
E.g.
David
'David'
'David...'

A single address appearing multiple times makes sense because each
group can have its own templets, character set, etc. but there is no
indication which address come from which group.

Finally, the address that TB decides to put into the To: seems to be
a total mystery.

In the MailTicker configuration screen I selected several folders that

My Trash folder isn't one of them.
Say there are 2 unread messages in the Trash folder. The ticker doesn't show.

When I receive 1 message in a monitored folder the ticker informs me of 3 new

If open the new message the ticker disappears.
So basically the ticker shows up at the right time but it counts wrong.

Ed,

Here's what I do as I have so many PDAs (Reviewer Tester!)...

I have my own domain which may mean things are slightly easier but I
forward all my incoming mail from my domain to a free service such as
Mail2Web. That gives me two instances of my mail - one at my domain
and one at the free POP or Exchange Push service. I then set the PC to
download from the domain and will always have a copy there but when on
the road or using/testing the PDAs I use the free POP service to
collect the mail and it then has no impact on my main domain base of
messages (including The Bat!).

If I send anything from the PDA, I just CC/BCC my normal address in so
it appears in the Inbox on the PC.

Naturally this works for me and depends on whether you can forward
e-mails to another source but it works for me.

The only other option is to move The Bat! to IMAP and use the Mail
client on the PDA in IMAP mode too. Can be a bit trickier though

Hope that helps

Corrupt message base

Hello Tbudl,

All was fine until a reboot.
After the reboot all extra message folders are gone. Leaving me with the

When I look inside the Bats directory in Program Files I see the missing
directories.
I tried the repair option but that didn't help.
I restored from a rather old backup and all the folders are back.
Except for one folder that I created yesterday and put some recent stuff in I
want back.
All is lost when restoring a backup you might say.
But somehow the folder is still there somewhere hidden
Let me explain.
I created a folder MyFolder as an normal folder under Inbox.
Then I used Ctrl+Shift+Left to move the folder 'to the left'
Not sure how that's called. i hope you understand.
After the restore I successfully created MyFolder again.
But when I try to move it out using Ctrl+Shift+Left the Bat give an error that
it can't rename the file.
Any other folder name works fine.
So to me it appears it can't rename because the old folder with the same name
still is there. (with message)

Any idea how to recover the messages?

Perhaps I should have said taht I don't prefer Baysian filters.
I've used K9 and Spampal for a long time. Both use Baysian filers.
Both gave good results. SpamPal a bit better because of the RNBL (?) database.
Both let me down with 'picture spam'
I searched for hours on the SpamPal forum for regex rules.
The picture spam with just a picture was fairly successful filtered.
But the new generation picture spam with book quotes was/is a absolute disaster.
And yes the RNBL access was slow. I don't know why.
I'm using an about to expire demo of AVG internet suite.
It's spamfilter is perfect!
Unfortunately it costs $60/year and I only require the spamfilter part.
I already have an other anti-virus tool for example.
Perhaps SpamPal has just a bad choice of RNBL lists?

Re: Vista RTM

2006-12-26 Thread Tony
Hello Jernej,

JS Some time ago (very soon after Vista RTM was released to MSDN subscribers),
JS a few people I know compared Vista with XP on a 1GHz Via C3 system. With all
JS effects disabled, Vista still needed 30% CPU when *idle*, compared to XP,
JS which needed 2-5%..

Don't get me wrong.
I'm not saying Vista uses little resources.
I just say MS has quality marketing that makes people believe otherwise.

About the 5%... Vista isn't really launched for the main public right now.
Like always MS will start heavy advertising and they start to sell. It
worked that way with all Windows versions.

JS It might sell with new systems (because XP won't be available anymore to
JS OEMs), but I doubt many existing customers will switch from XP to Vista.
I don't know the ratio OEM to normal licences.
Almost all OEMs + some normal licences + warez = a lot I think.
You

JS Intel? Intel was hiding that it's CPUs supported long mode for a long long
JS time.
The 64-bit CPUs where way to expensive for home use. Until now
ATM Intels 64-bit CPUs are about the same price as their 32-bit ones.
So I see no reason to buy 32-bit. My guess is that the 32-bit CPUs get fased
 out soon.

JS You're confusing IA64 and x64 CPUs. IA64 was Intel and HP's joint CPU
JS design, incompatible with existing x86 CPUs, primarily meant for server
JS market (where it never really took off). x84 (or, to be precise, AMD64) is
JS AMD's 64bit upgrade to the existing x86 (IA32) CPU architecture. Intel at
JS first didn't want to support it at all, since it didn't see any reason for
JS desktop computing to move to 64 bits, while it wanted it's own IA64
JS technology for the server market. However, it turned out that AMD's vision
JS was right, and Intel very quietly licensed their technology and added it to
JS the Pentium4 CPUs - but kept it disabled for a long time (and when they
JS finally enabled the long mode on P4's, it was still hard to know in advance
JS if you'll get a 64bit capable CPU, unless you looked really hard on Intel's
JS website for CPU model numbers).

Itanium was not a desktop chip (besides being incompatible)
The 64-bit functionality on other CPUs was either not there , switched of or
kept silent.
AMD did beat Intel to it but XP got all kind of delays in the 64-bit release.
I remember the gossip that Intel made/asked MS to delay XP 64-bit to catch up.
So I think we agree here. 64-bit CPUs didn't exist or where a well kept secret
for the consumer market.
(and not much choice in motherboard either besides brands like SuperMicro)

For now I stick with Win XP Pro with classical view because I hate that
 gamecomputer interface.

JS You can easily disable useless eye-candy in Vista, too - it's just that
JS there's still so much happening in background, that your CPU is never really
JS idle.

Disabling the eye-candy is the 1st thing I do for sure.
But first I need to convince myself the benefits of Vista.
Eye-candy, resource hog and DRM crap aren't exactly benefits.
(possibly) wider know 64-bit versions are good but not without 64-bit programs.
Stability XP is very stable here.
Security... well MS you know. Already a (backward compatible) exploit

Personally every step I make hard and software wise will be toward 64-bit.
But I have no hurry because although I see the 64-bit platform have potential
it still has to mature (software wise)

A happy New Year to all.
